Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 13

This week, our Official Podcast brings you another round of live music recaps. First, co-host Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) revisits the burgeoning local metal scene of Lynchburg, Virginia – previously covered here – with a rundown of its newly minted “Thursday Throwdown” series of concerts.

The second show, held at Phase 2 on Thursday, April 17th, presented a compact and delightfully complete ceremony of rock and metal tribute, starting with three-piece cover act Mourn The Illusion, continuing with progressive melodic metallers Unspoken, and culminating with headliners and local hard rock darlings Singleside ("Moving Forward" album review here).

Next up, co-host Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) discusses a recent headlining performance in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, by Canadian bizarro-metal wackos Protest The Hero. Check out his thoughts about the bill, which included openers Intervals, eclectic tech-proggers The Safety Fire, and strangely, Detroit thrashers Battlecross.

Finally, your co-hosts react to the recently released single “All Rise” from Wovenwar, the new formation of As I Lay Dying members minus prison-bound frontman Tim Lambesis. Wovenwar features Jordan Mancino (drums), Nick Hipa (guitar), Phil Sgrosso (guitar), Josh Gilbert (bass/vocals), and Oh, Sleeper frontman Shane Blay (vocals).

Check out the podcast here, enjoy, and offer us your feedback.

Father Murphy Announces New Tour Dates

Father Murphy is the sound of the Catholic sense of guilt; a downward spiral aiming at the bottom of the hollow, and then digging even deeper.

Spawned near Venice and boasting three albums and a plethora of EPs and limited releases, the grim duo -- Rev. Freddie Murphy (vocals, guitar) and Chiara Lee (vocals, keyboards, percussions) -- has over the years shapeshifted into one of Italy's most mysterious and enigmatic musical exports, part of the community that esteemed music critic, Simon Reynolds, dubbed the new "Italian occult psychedelia."

Evolving from twisted psychedelic pop into a far darker sonic exploration, Father Murphy manifests foreboding songs that crawl and twist and hiss like that old biblical serpent.

Next month, Father Murphy will take these abrasive hymns to North America on an epic voyage that will commence in Brooklyn, New York on May 7th and draw to a ceremonial close on June 19th in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The band will be touring in support of latest EP, "Pain Is On Our Side Now," released via Aagoo Records earlier this year. The follow-up to 2012's "Anyway, Your Children Will Deny It" was recorded by the band and mixed and produced by Greg Saunier from Deerhoof. More...

Aposento Streaming Full New Album

Just days before the release of Spanish outfit Aposento's self-titled album (due out May 1st), today you can hear the entire "Aposento" album below. Xtreem Music also comments:

"Formed back in 1990, they gained a good reputation with their demos '91 & '93, followed in '97 by their first mini CD after which they entered in a 15-year hiatus until 2012 when they reformed and released another mini CD which was well received within the Spanish extreme Metal underground and quickly making of Aposento a force to reckon.

"2013 was a busy year for the band, in which they concentrated on writing new songs for their long awaited debut full length album. And here it is!! 24 years after their inception, Aposento has just finished the recordings for their self-titled album that shows a truly classic style of Death Metal clearly rooted in sounds of 90's U.S. death metal like good old Cannibal Corpse, Death, Decidie, Massacre... With a heavy production and awesome cover artwork by Igor Mugerza, 'Aposento' is destined to become one of the most outstanding works in the Spanish extreme metal scene for 2014!" More...

Hush. Announces New Album

Albany, New York's Hush. has announced the June 24th release of a first full-length album, entitled "Unexist."

"Unexis"t was engineered by Ryan Slowey, mixed by Kowloon Walled City frontman Scott Evans (Old Man Gloom, Ladder Devils), and mastered by From Ashes Rise frontman Brad Boatright (Nails, Tragedy).

Today you can also stream Hush.'s "Eater Of All Things" off the "Unexist" album below, courtesy of American Aftermath.

Frontman Charles Cure refers to the band more as a collective force than a group of individuals, stating "The live performance is a delivery of massive, shuddering heaviness, provided by a literal wall of amplifiers. We regard the actual members of the band as a secondary aspect to the primacy of the sound and ideas being conveyed."

The lyrics on "Unexist" explore the concept of death as it has been represented in society via works of art and media coverage. Each song is based on one specific representation of death, with source materials ranging from an Emily Dickinson poem, to a Wladyslaw Podkowinski painting, to a newspaper article about an actual classmate of Cure's who committed suicide by jumping from a plane without a parachute. The track listing is as follows:

1. Solus
2. Eater of All Things
3. We Left Like Birds
4. Infinite Recursion
5. Waves of Exultation
6. Rest/Nonexistence

Excel Re-Issuing "Split Image"

Following the band's 2013 reunion, California hardcore/thrash metal crossover act Excel has since teamed up with Southern Lord, who will now be reissuing debut album "Split Image" this Summer. The label comments:

"Having their 1984 formation, Excel eleased three studio albums as well as a number of demos and singles. Equally influenced by punk rock and heavy metal in both attitude and delivery, the band's rabid musical approach and intelligent lyrics set them apart as a genre-defining act of the era. Produced by Randy Burns (Death, Possessed, Megadeth, Kreator, Suicidal Tendencies), Split Image was originally released through Suicidal and Caroline Records in 1987, and has since remained widely regarded as an elemental release as part of the '80s crossover explosion.

"The upcoming reissue of Split Image will contain bonus material, including the Sonic Decapitation, Personal Onslaught and Refuse To Quit demos, their Welcome To Venice and Thrasher Magazine compilation tracks, plus alternative album cover art and a photo booklet which has never been previously released. It marks the first time the record shall be available on vinyl since it was originally released in 1987. Excel will also be releasing a replica of their second demo, Personal Onslaught, as a limited edition preorder item, also including their third demo Refuse To Quit on the b-side. More...

Sonic Syndicate Reveals New Album Details

Anglo-Swedish modern metal powerhouse Sonic Syndicate has announced the band's upcoming fifth studio album will be self-titled, and is set to be released July 4th, 2014 via Nuclear Blast. Commented guitarist, main songwriter and founding member, Robin Sjunnesson:

"We decided to go with this one as a 'Self-Titled' release. Mainly because as an album we have put everything we’ve got into it. All of our experience as musicians, the evolution of the music, the sound from all eras of the band, and also the road we have taken as people. This is us, this is Sonic Syndicate in all its beauty and destruction. It shows our strength, our love for melody, our scars, our energy.

"The cover art is a definite representation of that. In the background, a battle-torn city laid to waste, four figures emerging together with only each other to depend on in an environment so harsh, only those with a tough heart, body and soul can survive. The tone throughout this album is definitely darker, and as my Swedish family would say 'With a red-line running in the middle' so we put this into the colour-scheme. We could not be more proud of this album, and we thank our fans for the support, it's because of them that we’re here. This album is for you.”

The "Sonic Syndicate" album will also feature a guest appearance by Soilwork's gifted vocalist Björn "Speed" Strid on the track "Before You Finally Break." Commented singer Nathan James Biggs: More...

Madball Releases New Lyric Video

NYHC outfit Madball has released a brand new song off the band's upcoming album, "Hardcore Lives." Check out the official lyric video for "DNA" below.

"Hardcore Lives" is set to be released on June 27th, 2014 via Nuclear Blast and was tracked & engineered by Unearth guitarist Ken Susi and mixed & mastered by long time collaborator Zeuss.

Iconic frontman, Freddy Cricien, explains the album title as follows: "I shouted 'Hardcore Lives' on Madball's first release, 'Ball Of Destruction' - I was twelve then. It wasn't pre planned or written down... it was an ad-lib that I just threw out there and we kept it! Back then there was no choice really, not the way we were recording - two track live at Don Fury's... NYHC style! I feel the sentiment behind the expression still holds true today, maybe even more so. Hence the reason we finally chose to use it as a title.

"Sure, it's about waving the flag for our genre/culture, etc. - I've always felt that 'we as a scene' had to scream just a lil louder... to be heard! That said, »Hardcore Lives« at least to us, is not just about a cool 'catchphrase' - it's about that rebellious spirit that doesn't give in... In life, music, whatever. It's about growing, evolving, and maintaining your integrity in the process. It's about family, overcoming adversity, and respect. All the things that matter inside and outside of the music realm. It's for everyone and anyone with an open mind and heart." More...

Voice Of Ruin Unzips Some "Morning Wood"

The horny farmers in Swiss outfit Voice Of Ruin are gearing up to show off their "Morning Wood," and today you can bear witness to the towering monolith in all its erect glory below!

You too can get "Morning Wood" today in Switzerland and on May 5th elsewhere via Tenacity Music. Digital copies and physical pre-orders are available at the Voice of Ruin Bandcamp page here.

Voice of Ruin was born in 2008, driven by the common desire of five Swiss farmers who dreamt of leaving the family farm and becoming rock stars. Hungry for success and recognition, the five strapping young lads abandoned their shovels and harvesters to take on different type of instruments, with the goal of becoming icons of sex, alcohol, and rock’n’roll (or horny farmer metal).

Between two harvests and after a first EP, the band released its first album in 2011 through Heimathome Records. Voice of Ruin quickly sell 666,666 copies of this release, which allows the quintet to make a lot of cash and spend it on alcohol and women, like bankers, whilst playing a series of shows in Switzerland and France.

However, times are tough and cows and hop don’t make enough money to sustain their extreme and rock’n’roll lifestyle. The band is hence obliged to record second album "Morning Wood" in order to fill the coffers. Distributed by Irascible in Switzerland and Plastic Head in Europe, this new opus will be released on Tenacity Music and will allow the band to tour Japan in spring 2014 with The Black Dahlia Murder and Fleshgod Apocalypse.
