Every few years you can expect the ever-reliable Finnish outfit Insomnium to let loose another darkly atmospheric bout of melodic death metal.
The band's latest offering "Shadows of the Dying Sun" lands at the end of the month, following 2011's "One For Sorrow" (reviewed here). After keeping a very recognizable base sound across each album through the years, there will be a few surprises in store for fans this time around.
"I would say the core sound of our band is there," said Insomnium member Ville Friman when I spoke with him last week, adding "I think we have used our influences differently on this album, though... It's more diverse."
During our discussion, Ville took me through the writing and recording of "Shadows of the Dying Sun," touching on everything from how lyric videos come together to bonus material on the album's special edition. More...

Montreal, QC's Mire performed on Global TV Montreal's Morning Show earlier today (April 7th). Watch the video below of the band's interview and acoustic performance of "Limitless Pt. 2," or over at GlobalNews.ca here.
Mire officially released new album "Inward/Outward" on March 18th, which follows the band's 2010 self-titled EP. Vocalist JP LaChapelle comments on the release:
"Interpreted through our fingers, tongued and toe tips, this album which we've been working on for 2 years at totally different points in our lives, demonstrates the fan of emotions of 5 individuals' experience. The craft is the loom into which our soil-tending, sun-vising and pest-warding efforts bear fruit. Love for the fate of man and the anger to defend it. Overwhelmed with a sense of innate creativity, we all curb our nature to the structures put in place for our short lives; whether building an enterprise, community or institution of any kind. Mire's decided to make music. Filtered as pure as possible, our passion rendered this product.
"Our maiden album expresses the plight of an impeached animal nature, faced with the philosophy of man's fate run through questionable funnels. Throughout our creative process, we've experienced different stages and shed skins. The 5 colors we shine combine through the prism of 'Inward Outward' to produce the first of Mire's own hues. Being able to walk one's own path is its own reward and we five musicians feel incredibly fortunate to have seized the chance to create this album. That's what we celebrate every time we hear it." The organizers of the Roadburn Festival have issued the following announcement about honoring Selim Lemouchi (The Devil's Blood, Selim Lemouchi & His Enemies), who passed away earlier this year:
"The Devil's Blood's first-ever show at Roadburn 2008 was undeniably one of the great moments in the festival's history. After the group disbanded in early 2013, guitarist Selim Lemouchi sought to channel his considerable creative energies into a new project: Selim Lemouchi & His Enemies.
"During 2013, the debut EP Mens Animus Corpus was followed by the release of the full-length Earth Air Spirit Water Fire. The album presentation in December 2013 offered a tantalizing hint of transcendent performances to come, and consequently we at Roadburn HQ were thrilled to add Selim and his new band to this year's Afterburner bill.
"However, thrill turned to sorrow with the news of Selim's passing last month. At first, it was impossible to grasp. How could he be gone? The idea of removing his name from the various Roadburn 2014 posters, press releases and website items was too much to bear. Even after being able to talk with his family, even after having had a little time to grieve, it was still incomprehensible that he would not be joining us. More...
“FREE SANDWICH,” the black-on-white marquee lettering announces outside the unassuming roadside deli. “JESUS LOVES YOU.”
For many Americans today, such a sight is instant “meme bait” – earnest religiosity begging for a sneering, sarcastic caption. For this returning Virginia native, who spent eight years in secular New England associating with metalheads and entertainment business types, it’s a fidgety sensation of dislocation, of being marooned between two worlds at odds with one another. Two worlds – let’s face it – at war.
Which is why I still have no idea what to expect – I am indeed attending a metal show, I have to keep reminding myself – as I turn off Route 29 South and weave my way uphill to narrow Old Colony Road in Madison Heights, minutes from Lynchburg. More...

Machine Head is proud to announce the first round of tour dates in 2014 for North America. The 11 date "Killers & Kings Tour" will serve as an album primer for more dates in the U.S. Says vocalist / guitarist Robb Flynn:
"When we played the Mayhem festival last year, we decided to do some warm up dates beforehand to shake off the rust. We decided to book them into extremely small, intimate venues where we could put on a really intense show without our usual bells and whistles.
"These venues were in (what is known in the touring industry as) 'B and C markets,' (basically, not NY, LA, Chicago, Detroit, etc...). We played in Spokane, Portland, and Fresno, and the shows were so fucking amazing, so fucking hot and sweaty, so fucking life affirming, and just so much god damn FUN, as soon as we were done, we vowed that we had to do it again and go on tour in America hitting all the places that we rarely ever get to.
"Part of the reason we don't hit these places, is that sometimes their local economy just can't afford to pay as well as a major city. As a band, Machine Head has always made the effort to re-invest in our band rather than pocket the money. We've done a lot of tours where we lost buttloads of cash, all in the name of giving our fans the best show of their lives. That is what is most important to us.
"And with that said, we're probably gonna lose some moolah doing this club run. But you know what? The way we look at it, this is also re-investing in our band, by investing in the most important thing we have, YOU! It's giving die-hard Machine Head fans, the Head Cases in the nooks and crannies of America, the places that are often starving for live music, something special and unforgettable.
"And local bands you are welcome to jump on in every city. Because this will be the first time that we've ever played a lot of these cities, we're not even sure if we HAVE fans there, but we believe we can break even!! More...
Portuguese doom metal band Ava Inferi has premiered "Ao Teu Lado," a new track taken from the "One And All, Together, For Home" compilation. The track is streaming below, courtesy of Brave Words and Bloody Knuckles.
"Ao Teu Lado" marks the final chapter in Ava Inferi's storied career, as the band has announced this will be the last recording it ever releases.
Due out May 23rd (5/27 in North America) via Season of Mist, "One And All, Together, For Home" is a compilation of bands recording folk and acoustic tracks. Regarding the new Ava Inferi song, guitarist Rune Ericksen comments:
"Ao Teu Lado is inspired by traditional Portuguese music known as Fado, which means fate. Both the melody and lyrics of Ao Teu Lado are rooted within the Fado style. The title translates as By Your Side and true to this intimate genre it is a kind of love song with a dramatic ending." More...
Having recently released all three previous albums digitally, dark metal outfit Foscor now releases some rare tracks - including previously unreleased songs - and material that has long since sold out, as well as the entire soundtrack of the 10th Anniversary live DVD “Deu Anys Vers la Foscor.”
Included in the new releases are the Xerion cover “Na Noite Dos Tempos” (originally included in a 2002 split), the 2008 track “The Ghost Sonata” (exclusively composed for the never-released “Toteninsel: A Tribute to Arnold Böcklin” album), and the song “The Other’s Voice” (originally included in the sold out 2010 split 7” EP with Necrosadist “Onslaught of Black Putrefaction”).
The new material, together with the three full-length albums, “Entrance to the Shadows’ Village,” “The Smile of the Sad Ones,” and “Groans to the Guilty,” can be found at Bandcamp here.
Commenting on the decision to release previous material digitally, front man Fiar said: “Foscor is entering a whole new phase of its existence, and many new fans have started following the band, fans that perhaps don’t really know our history, and it seemed like the ideal way to let them find out about us. When we released the three albums we offered them for free download for a month as a thank you to old and new fans, and we received an extraordinary response, with many people actually paying for the albums, rather than downloading them free, and that certainly gives us a lot of confidence for the future.” More...

North Carolina based avant/doom-gaze band Mountains Among Us has inked a deal with Argonauta Records. “Commission the Twelve” will be out in June 2014 in noble DigiSleeve CD limited edition.
Formed in 2007 by Brandon Helms, the band released first full-length "True North" in 2008 followed by the second album "Believer" in 2010.
After working on some experimental EPs from 2011-2012, the band began writing for a first full-length in over four years, described by the band as its "heaviest, most ambitious work to date."
Argonauta Records comments: "Their blackened avant-garde style is constantly morphing into new territory while experimenting in different sounds, which will appeal to fans of Earth, This Will Destroy You, Nadja, and Deafheaven."

The British madcap thrashers in Lawnmower Deth have launched a Kickstarter campaign to re-press their 1990 debut album, "Ooh Crikey It's… Lawnmower Deth," after recently being confirmed to play at this year's Download Festival on Saturday, June 14th.
Having been unavailable for nearly twenty years, repeated demands from hardcore fans has led Lawnmower Deth and Earache to launch a campaign to get the album remastered and reissued, with a range of suitably-mad items concocted for fans to pledge for and all profits going to the Sophie Lancaster Foundation.
You can contribute to the Kickstarter campaign and see the perks available for contributing over at this location.
Frontman Pete "Qualcast Mutilator" Lee comments: "You know that giddy feeling you get. The one when you're 9 and 3/4 old, that one where it makes you kick your legs, the one that makes you run down hills going 'urgh-urgh-urgh-urgh-urgh'.
"You mean you've forgotten? Fear not. Here's how to get it back. Them lovely people at Earache, and now honorary buffoons have decided, after many years of pestering, to reissue the now legendary opus that is 'Dark Side of the Moon'. Ok, they couldn't get that, but they have got 'Ooh Crikey It's…'. Horns. Heard ya! And not only that, all profits will go to our most favourite and deserving charity, The Sophie Lancaster Foundation. We need your pledges, now! Show us the money. Show SOPHIE the money. You can always chuck the vinyl away afterwards."
If the campaign is successful, the album will be reissued on CD and vinyl in a limited print run, remastered from the original tapes in Full Dynamic Range (FDR) audio, which allows the music's nuances to shine through, giving the album a more ferocious, immersive and dynamic sound than ever before.
InsideOutMusic is very pleased to announce the signing of Knifeworld for the release of forthcoming new album "The Unravelling" later this summer.
The eight-piece band led by Kavus Torabi (Cardiacs, Gong) has been working on the follow-up to 2009's "Buried Alone: Tales of Crushing Defeat."
The band had this to say about the signing: "Knifeworld are very happy to be signing to InsideOut. Our forthcoming album, The Unravelling, is so close to completion we are terrified to mention it. Nonetheless it will be the first Knifeworld album to feature the full psychedelic majesty of our eight piece line-up.
"It must go off like an atom bomb in your broken hearts. An atom bomb that will make a mockery of all you hold dear. An atom bomb of love. InsideOut hold the trigger and we've dared them to press it. Press it real good now."
Label-head Thomas Waber added: "It's great to welcome Knifeworld to the InsideOutMusic family, and there is no doubt that 'The Unravelling' will prove to be something very special indeed." More...

Regarding the new incarnation of the band, band leader Heimoth issued the following statement: “This is some exceptional moment for us as we are now officially back on the very same label that released our first album in 98’ and I guess this truly makes our recent comeback even more worthwhile. Both parts have taken different directions for more than 10 years but we are thrilled to unveil ‘The Howling Spirit’ together. "This song is about the pointless war of words between those who are judgmental about others' career choices, and those who are judged. There's a lot of unnecessary rage and finger pointing between these people and 'Skin Deep' portrays how ridiculous these arguments get from the point of view of a young musician."

Basist Owen Crawford from Triaxis has issued the following announcement about departing the band:
"This is never an easy thing to do, but today I have to let everyone know that I'm leaving Triaxis. A lot has happened since joining the band 6 years ago, I've played at some fantastic shows, some terrible ones and I've met some great people along the way, but there are things both outside and inside the band that have caused me to make this decision.
"I'd like to thank everyone that has made the effort to come to a show (or for some of you a lot of shows) and all the people that I've spoken with, drank too much beer with and insulted people's mothers with. Best of luck to the rest of the band in the future."
The band also comments: "We are really sad and shocked that Owen is leaving Triaxis, and we completely understand his reasons and respect his decision. We want to take this opportunity to thank him for all the work he has put in to making Triaxis what it is and his writing skills have given us some amazing songs to share. We've had lots of fun, plenty of highs and lows, but so many happy memories and we wish him all the best with his future projects."

Finnish melodic death metal outfit Insomnium has completed the video clip for the track "While We Sleep," taken from upcoming album "Shadows Of The Dying Sun," which is due out April 28th in Europe and April 29th in North America via Century Media Records.
The video was directed by Dariusz Szermanowicz and can be viewed below, courtesy of No Clean Singing.
Insomnium's Ville Friman (guitars/vocals) comments: "Couple of weeks ago we travelled to Wroclaw, Poland, to shoot the first music video from 'Shadows Of The Dying Sun'. This time we decided to work with a Polish production company, Grupa 13, whose work includes the new Behemoth video, amongst others. The song we chose for the video is called 'While We Sleep'. It's a wistful song with all typical Insomnium elements included - riffs, melodies, aggression, sorrow, grandeur and hope. We shot everything within one day and it was really a pleasure to work with such a professional film group. Everything went smoothly, and we are amazed and very happy with the end result. You really can't complain when the film group provides you vodka schnapps between the takes. We sincerely hope that you'll like the end result as much as we do."
