A behemoth is something gigantic. The word also pertains to a hippo (a gigantic creature) being described in the bible. Both of these usages can be applied to Poland's black/death creation of the same name. Their music is large and lyrically looks to the Bible's antagonist, Lucifer, for inspiration. In terms of touring and selling albums, Behemoth has become a giant in the extreme metal market. Part of this can be attributed to touring. Part of their success can be attributed to their merchandise and on-stage visuals. Another facet of their success, obviously, is putting out good records.
In their early days, Behemoth played a major role in defining Eastern Europe's black metal scene. Midway through the band's career, they started moving into death metal territory in the vein of U.S. bands such as Morbid Angel and Deicide. The last couple of albums including recent hell blazer "The Satanist" showcase a black/death approach with a greater philosophical bent in the lyrics and epic transitions. I was fortunate to catch their act on the Metal Alliance tour. Their set was mired in theatrics--horned masks, face paint, fire and elaborate back drops. While the band has always wore costumes while performing, they bring so much more than the armor and corpse paint of the last show I caught in 2009.
Before playing in front of a 1,000 or so people at Emo's in Austin, Texas, I stepped onto Behemoth's bus to chat with bassist, Orion. In the following interview, he breaks down how the band worked on aspects of "The Satanist" such as working with artists and video production companies to get the proper visuals for the album art and forthcoming videos. He talks about the band's set list, touring cycle and making it in the United States. More...
Last year Red Bull Music Academy made history with Drone Activity In Progress, a once-in-a-lifetime experience that took the best and loudest avant-garde artists, mixed them together in a giant door-factory-turned concert venue in Queens, threw in three larger-than-life sound systems, passed out earplugs, and watched what ensued. Drone Activity In Progress was hailed by critics from The New York Times to The Fader, who called the show a “near-perfect noise show.”
This year, Red Bull Music Academy Festival New York has done one better with Hardcore Activity In Progress, taking place on Friday, May 16, 2014. Like last year, the spectacle will go down at the Knockdown Center in Queens, Nuit Blanche will again deliver an unparalleled multi-sensory experience, and Roberta’s Pizza will provide refuge outside for those trying to escape the overpowering intentional noise bleed. But this year, the event will blow open the doors genre-wise, showcasing a sampling of the most extreme recording artists in metal, techno, jazz, classical, noise, hip hop and beyond. It’s a showcase of music that exists at the extremes of their genres, and as such, here’s a guide to the diverse artists playing the event.
The lineup is as follows:
Tim Hecker (Experimental Music)
Skullflower (Drone Rock)
Napalm Death (Grindcore)
Lubomyr Melnyk (Classical)
The Thing (Jazz)
Bastard Noise (Powerviolence)
Wolf Eyes (Noise)
Okkyung Lee (Classical)
Yoshiko Ohara (former front woman of Bloody Panda; Vocal Music)
Joe McPhee/Chris Corsano (Jazz)
Reg Bloor (Noise)

New York hardcore icon Harley Flanagan is currently in the process of recording his newest LP to be released on Southern Lord later this year.
With his musical roots tracing back to the beginning of the 1980s, Flanagan was involved in NYC punk act The Stimulators before even hitting his teens. In the mid-'80s he founded the legendary hardcore/crossover act, The Cro-Mags, directly after which the band releasing the seminal "Age Of Quarrel" LP.
At the beginning of the millennium, the artist formed his own Harley's War and released debut album, "Cro-Mag," in 2002. Flanagan and several other players recently started laying down the basic tracks for the impending yet-to-be-named album, which will close the extensive twelve-year gap since the band's initial works were released.
Flanagan commented on signing with Southern Lord and the ongoing recording process of the new material: "I think that this is some of the hardest stuff I have written in a long time. God knows there has been a lot of inspiration over the last few years."
Southern Lord owner Greg Anderson this week stated on the upcoming release: "The demos we have heard thus far are incredible! We're really looking forward to hearing this when it's completed."
Minnesota power metal outfit Noble Beast is pleased to announce the addition of Andrew Rasmussen as the band's new drummer. While he is primarily known for his work in black metal band Astral Blood, Andrew is excited to be working with Noble Beast. He had the following to say about his new role:
"I’m very excited to be joining Noble Beast as their full time drummer. I have spent many years of my life always playing in more Black Metal type bands so needless to say I was pretty skeptical at first when Rob had originally told me they were searching for a full time drummer. But then after listening to the four tracks Rob sent me I was blown away! This is new and exciting for me, and I've had a fucking blast playing the music."
Noble Beast also states: "A lot of things drew us to Andrew—his chops, his easygoing personality, our shared love of Disillusion—but more than anything else, it was his enthusiasm for Noble Beast that made him The Guy. Andrew is just as committed as we are to building Noble Beast's future. Together, we're going to make Noble Beast the best band it can be." More...
Pittsburgh, PA tech death metal machine Kamikabe has released a playthrough video for the song "Nefarious," which comes from debut full-length "Aberration of Man," released in August 2012 via Unique Leader Records. Check it out below.
The band offered this brief update to go along with the playthrough clip: "Something to gnaw on while you wait for new material. Jake Smatana left us in 2013. We have since recruited Dave Kirsch on bass, and have begun writing for our next album."
Following the release of "Aberration of Man," Kamikabe hit the road in the Fall of 2012 for an East Coast Headline run with fellow heavy hitters Rivers of Nihil supporting. In Spring 2013, Kamikabe took part in the Bloodletting North America tour, which featured Gorod, Inanimate Existence and Vale of Pnath. Immediately following the Bloodletting tour, Kamikabe had to deal with some shifts in line up which sidelined the band for the remainder of 2013. More...
Gloom: a new, heretofore unknown band from Washington DC, will be releasing a self-titled EP this year. The track "Unrequited" can now be heard below, courtesy of MetalSucks.net. The following press release was also issued about the band:
"Not to be confused with the Japanese crust punks of the same name, Gloom is that rare metal band that uses its technical prowess to create supremely memorable songs. Precise and concise, gloriously efficient, the tracks that comprise Gloom's debut wow with their musicality and their simplicity, making their deadly points in an average time of 3 minutes each. Gloom frontman Bill Calomiris names Suffocation and Gorgoroth as his biggest inspirations. Add to that mix some Down or Crowbar, and the skeleton of the Gloom sound takes shape."
In the words of MetalSucks: "The band's genre-bending brand of towering, savage blackened death groove is so overwhelming, so powerful, it's guaranteed to do things to your head: get stuck in it, and completely fucking obliterate it."
The "Gloom" EP, set for a June 24th release, was produced by Marshall Wieczorek, drummer of Victory Records outfit Wretched. The cover art was created by Steven Mercado (Dillinger Escape Plan) and the track listing is as follows:

Guitarist Marty Friedman has unveiled the music video for “Inferno,” the title track from his new album due out in North America on May 27th.
The concept for the clip — directed by Friedman and David Brodsky (Devin Townsend, The Black Dahlia Murder) — was inspired by a television show in Japan, where Friedman currently lives and is a popular TV personality himself.
Says Friedman “The music video for ‘Inferno’ is an homage/parody of one of my fave Japanese TV shows, ‘Zenryokusaka‘ (‘Full Power Hill’). It’s a weekly five-minute show where the entire premise is absolutely nothing but a girl running up a hill. Each week a different girl, and a different hill. I am hooked on this show, and think it is genius in its simplicity and ever-so-slight sexual nature. It took me a while to explain the charm of the show to the video director, but I think towards the end of making our video together, he got it. It’s like many things that happen outside the culture you were born in; you either get it and it’s fresh or you don’t and it’s just weird.”
The “Inferno” album was recorded mostly in Los Angeles with engineer Chris Rakestraw (Danzig, Children of Bodom) and mixed by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Amon Amarth). Featuring notable guest appearances and collaborations with acts including Rodrigo y Gabriela, Jason Becker, Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom), Dave Davidson (Revocation) and Danko Jones, the album features what Friedman describes as the heaviest and most intense playing and writing of his career. "You Can't Stop Me" was produced and mixed by Steve Evetts, who worked with the band not only on "The Black Crown," but also on some instrumental demos just prior to Mitch's passing in 2012.
“The long and short of it is this,” explains guitarist Mark Heylmun. “Mitch left behind a set of lyrics with the title You Can't Stop Me. This gave us chills to say the least and we knew we had the title and title track. This filled us with inspiration for writing sessions to empower us and empower you, the supporters of Suicide Silence. More...
Today, the entirety of Velnias' celebrated "Sovereign Nocturnal" is being streamed below, courtesy of Zero Tolerance magazine.
Released last week in Europe by Eisenwald (and May 6th in North America), this deluxe reissue of "Sovereign Nocturnal" is available on both gatefold LP and CD formats. The following press release was issued about the band:
"Hailing from Colorado, Velnias came into being in late 2006 and established themselves by force of steady and captivating live performances throughout the years, be it single concerts and rituals or tours with the likes of Agalloch, Mournful Congregation, or the recent EU appearances with Kampfar.
"Originally issued in 2008 and published under several different pressings since then, this reworked reissue of the band's Sovereign Nocturnal debut comes with deluxe packaging and new stunning artwork. With three songs and a total running time of over 40 minutes, Sovereign Nocturnal is widely described as a harmonic combination of sorrowful black metal with a sprawling doom atmosphere, combined with elements of folk & moody acoustic passages.
"Their musical foundation, with intertwined tracks of long, brooding atmospheric monuments and feral-yet-fragile riffs with healthy traces of folk, manages to invoke the sense of a moonlit forest and the spirits within, nature's majesty and humanities irrevocable demise." More...

Founded in Barcelona in 2005, the band self-released the concept album "Mantiis – An Agony in Fourteen Bites" in 2012 (which is still available for streaming over here). Obsidian Kingdom comments:
"Obsidian Kingdom is no longer an independent band. We have come to this hard resolution having one and only one thing in mind: to keep making music for you. Because we want you to know about us if you don't already. We want to be able to play in your town or very near. We want you to spin our records without having to pay inflated shipping prices. And we would rather invest our limited and valuable human resources in making music, not in bureaucracy.
“...From now on, we will be working side by side to bring our music to your ears in the best and most efficient way possible, starting with the long-time demanded re-issue of our debut album, ‘Mantiis’, which will happen in the autumn. In the meantime, we are already writing more music for you to bask in... Wish us luck on this brave step, and we will repay you a thousand-fold!”

Los Angeles power rockers revealed details on the upcoming new release "Legions of the Brave." The album is set for release on May 30th via Pure Rock Records (a division of Pure Steel Records). The third album "Legions Of The Brave" combines symphonic Heavy/Power Metal and melodic Hard Rock with a great technical guitar work. A spherical keyboard meets pushing double basses, while some guitar solos (“All or Nothing” for example) reveals a closeness to the sensitive feelings of a Ritchie Blackmore (represented with a strong cover of "Stormbringer” ...). Catchy riffs are also present on the album, as well as AOR influenced parts.
The track list for the album is:
1. Arcturus Rising Part 1

Additionally, the six songs from those EPs have been re-mixed/re-mastered for inclusion on the full album.
The new album, will feature 12 songs varying in dynamic intensity, shows the band re-tooled, re-focused and re-energized – in a way that it captures the essence of their song-oriented and technically-skilled metal very well. In 2011, Former Nightwish vocalist Tarja Turunen teamed up with former Rage drummer Mike Terrana for the "Beauty & The Beat" live performance - which consisted of interpretations of classic music pieces ranging from Bach to Mozart to Rossini as well as rock classics from Queen, Led Zeppelin and Tarja. In spring of 2013, the team toured throughout the world, from Poland to Russia to Mexico.
As a celebration of the tour, the new live release "Tarja Turunen & Mike Terrana - Beauty & The Beat" will be made available on 2CD/DVD/Blu-ray and digital download. Pre-orders can be made for: 2CD, DVD and Blu-ray.
"Beauty & The Beat" is something very different than your ordinary rock show, let alone your ordinary classic concert. It's music played in an unorthodox manner, it's the performance of a wide range of classical pieces and rock songs together with an orchestra and choir. It strikes you with awe. The music ranges from immortal classic pieces by Bach, Strauss and Mozart to Rossini, but doesn't neglect pure rock music like songs from Led Zeppelin, Queen as well as Tarja's own pieces. All combined with orchestra and choir with more than 100 musicians on stage, an enormous sound, energetic drums and Tarja's angelic voice.
Tarja and Mike complement each other musically. Whereas Mike bangs his drums with rock attitude, Tarja shines with her crystal clear voice and incredible stage presence; all lulled with the warm, full sound of an orchestra.
Tarja Turunen explains: "The idea of having a symphonic orchestra, choir and Mr. Terrana on drums was originally mine. Mike has done a recording with drums over classical pieces that I think it is great. I immediately imagined it performed live on a stage with a real orchestra as a part of a bigger concept. I believe this kind of combination of instruments, particularly playing mainly classical music, is very unique. I have been making collaborations with orchestras before and I could foresee a great outcome. More...
