Unearthing An Eclectic Slice Of The Underground

Although we'll cover the big names like Metallica and Motorhead, our goal at Metalunderground.com is to always to bring the lesser known local bands that deserve your attention out of obscurity and into the collective metal consciousness.

To that end we periodically unearth bands you may not have had the chance to hear before that all offer up quality material. Today we'll cover a huge range of sound and even a massive number of miles between countries with three bands from different corners of Europe who all lean towards drastically different corners of the genre spectrum.

Postvorta

Experimental, ambient, introspective... Postvorta soothingly beckons you through smooth and seemingly stable sonic corridors, then unexpectedly blows up the ceiling and drops tons of bludgeoning metal on your head.

The Italian sound smiths have dubbed their music “post metal.” I call it “something you need to listen to immediately if you dig Neurosis or Isis.”

The full “Beckoning Light We Will Set Ourselves On Fire” album was self-released earlier this year and just last month saw a physical edition through Bleeding Light Records. The whole album can be heard through the player below, and you can pick up a digital or physical copy at this location.

Gale Releases Debut Album

Another new name surges forth from Arizona's flourishing sludge/doom scene in the form of Gale as the outfit self-releases debut recording, "Vol. 1."

The band's moniker references the massive desert winds, a trait which the group attempts to exemplify with similarly devastating results through exceptionally loud craft. As per the band: "We play loud as fuck. This is rock n roll; it should be loud and dangerous."

Burning with twenty-six minutes of material, Gale's debut was recorded in nearly one take by Jalipaz Nelson at Audioconfusion in Mesa, Arizona. While not a concept record, the album and its lyrical basis primarily deals with existentialism and the darkness that can be revealed upon self-analysis.

Gale will forge a physical version of "Vol. 1" in the pending months, and the band has already begun the planning stages on additional new material which will see release through several new works throughout 2015. Catch the band live:

Black Fast Signs Record Deal

The Midwestern progressive thrashers from Black Fast have announced a worldwide deal with eOne Music. The band is planning for an all new full-length LP next year and could not be more excited.

"What an amazing day for not only Black Fast, but for every local heavy metal band out there," says guitarist/vocalist Aaron Akin. "Our signing to eOne Music is a reminder to keep grinding, writing, rehearsing, opening up for nationals, developing relationships and doing whatever it takes."

The yet-to-be titled LP will be the band's follow-up to "Starving Out The Light." Akin continues: "We want to thank everyone who helped make this day happen, including our favorite national bands like Havok and Battlecross for spreading the word, the metal blogs for the great reviews, our management for guiding us, promoters for booking us, and to eOne, for thinking we are worthy of joining a roster of artists that include legends like Overkill, Unearth and High on Fire."

Stay tuned for more info on studio developments and tour announcements, and in the meantime catch the band live at The Firebird in St. Louis with Battlecross on November 30th. Finally, Akin concludes: "We promise not to disappoint any of you. Expect to hear the torture and fun that we have making music together, our honest desire for creating heavy metal and our appreciation for this opportunity to translate into a high-energy live show and the best records that we can make." As a result, we will continue as a 4-piece with Pontus resuming his place in Dead by April as vocalist/guitarist. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Zandro for all his years in the band and the great shows we’ve performed together."

It has not been an easy decision but after much thought and consideration I have decided to leave Dead by April. I am truly grateful for everything I've experienced during my time within the band, and for all the amazing fans I've met along the way. You guys are THE best!

"A new path lies ahead of me. Music is my life, my passion and I'm going to continue doing what I love to do the most. There will be Zandro Santiago music released in a not too distant future. Interview

Rigor Mortis/Warbeast's Bruce Corbitt Interview

26 years have passed since Bruce Corbitt recorded vocals for Rigor Mortis. The band recorded the “Freaks” EP (1989) and “Rigor Mortis Vs. The Earth” in 1991, but both recordings featured Doyle Bright on vocals. Rigor Mortis was put on a shelf after the latter album release, but returned in 2005. During this time of inactivity guitarist Mike Scaccia metalized industrial icons Ministry on the “Psalm 69” album and bassist Casey Orr assumed the role of Beefcake The Mighty in Gwar and Sheriff “Tubb” Tucker in X-Cops.

Just a year after Rigor Mortis’ reformation, Corbitt and members of fellow Dallas/Fort Worth ‘80s thrashers Gammacide formed Texas Metal Alliance. The group changed its name to Warbeast and recorded its first album “Krush the Enemy” in 2010. This album and their second full-length were both released on Phil Anselmo’s Housecore Records.

A year prior to the release of Warbeast’s “Destroy,” Corbitt joined original members of Rigor Mortis—Casey Orr-bass, Mike Scaccia-guitar and Harden Harrison-drums and recorded the 10 tracks that would become “Slaves to the Grave” at Al Jourgensen’s 13th Planet Studios in El Paso. The speed picking of their eponymous debut was maintained while Scaccia showed a knack for shredding that wasn’t as obvious on the first record. “Slaves to the Grave” was without a doubt Mike Scaccia’s best playing. Unfortunately, it was his last. Near the end of 2012, Scaccia died of a heart attack doing what he did best, playing a concert in front of his fans. Since Scaccia’s death, Rigor Mortis has played under pseudonyms such as The Scaccianators and most recently, Wizards of Gore. The former name performed to benefit the Mike Scaccia Heart Rock Foundation.

Bruce Corbitt was in Austin to play with both bands on the Housecore Horror Film Festival. When not enjoying the plethora of great bands, Corbitt was involved in other aspects of the fest. He sat next to metal dignitaries such as Phil Anselmo and film icons such as Bill Moseley on the Masters of Metal and Horror Panel. He also saw his documentary “Welcome to your Funeral (The Story of Rigor Mortis) debut. Corbitt’s directing earned him the award for Best Documentary by Housecore judges.

I caught up with Corbitt early on Friday to find out more about what he had in store for HHFF. He recalls recording “Slaves to the Grave” and talks about the future as Wizards of Gore and Warbeast. More...

Abstracter Announces New Album

California's Abstracter has announced the band's upcoming second full-length album will be a cooperative release between Germany-based Vendetta Records and 7Degrees Records, Italy's Shove Records, UK-based Church of Fuck, and U.S. labels Fragile Branch Recordings, Sentient Ruin Laboratories, and An Out Recordings.

Drawing musical influence Godflesh, Amebix, Neurosis, His Hero is Gone, Blut Aus Nord, and Dystopia and conceptually influenced by the work of South African anti-natalist philosopher David Banatar, "Wound Empire" is a concept work that once again sees the band dwell in its obsession for massive and crushing riffing.

Crafted in near-seclusion over the past two years, "Wound Empire" is a forty-five minute hallucinating voyage into a frightening wasteland of complete darkness-ridden heaviness spread across four, ten minute-long, slabs of blackened doom.

This new album follows debut release, "Tomb of Feathers," which dropped in 2012 on The Path Less Traveled Records. "Wound Empire" was recorded this Spring at Earhammer Studios in Oakland by Greg Wilkinson and mastered at Audiosiege Mastering studios in Portland by Brad Boatright. More...

Maybe you can, or maybe you may not hear it- But we really looked back to the great metal days - at bands like, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, where we drew inspiration. Job For A Cowboy Streams "The Celestial Antidote"

Job for a Cowboy today sets loose a third cut from the upcoming "Sun Eater" album.

"The Celestial Antidote" is #6 in the sequence of nine songs on the album. Check out "The Celestial Antidote" below, thanks to MetalInjection.net.

Guitarist Al Glassman discusses the song's significance:

"Bobby Thompson, who left us as a full time member in 2010, continues to remain a part of Job for a Cowboy always, and once again contributed an incredible track to the new record. For those who have heard 'Tarnished Gluttony' (his contribution to the last record), you will not be disappointed with his latest song. It's moody and heavy as hell, and features some of my favorite guitar work on the record on Tony's end. After years of writing with Bobby, I can honestly say that this is his best work yet with JFAC and I hope you guys dig it too!"

Posthum Releases New Album

The Norwegian black metal missionaries from Posthum are pleased to unleash the unholy fruits of their third full-length, "The Black Northern Ritual."

Recorded by Morten Opsahl Thomassen, who worked on the band's 2012 "Lights Out" opus alongside the band, mixed by George Tanderø, and mastered by Peter In De Betou, "The Black Northern Ritual" is a seven track, forty-minute offering of audio hate, acrimony and disease bedecked in a cold, callous atmosphere that's difficult to dismiss.

"To have George Tanderø mixing the album was an easy choice," said Posthum drummer Morten Edseth. "We needed a person with not only skills, but also talent and an open mind. George has the worked with a variety of artists spanning from A-ha and Satyricon to Travis and Cat Stevens. We knew he was the person who was up to the task and to get the best out of the songs we had written and recorded. What we got back was nothing else but perfection, groove and just the right sound for the songs."

Lyrically, "The Black Northern Ritual" centers itself on rebellion against the false and corrupted values of the modern western world. "The lyrics are to me a purifying ritual, an inner journey to keep myself in balance, kind of a safe-place where I never have to escape from," notes Kristian Skare. "I also seek inspiration from the forever-pure nature, and the frustration on how we blindly let it suffer. Sometimes it`s like the universe speaks to me, then I just write down the lyrics as I listen to the arrangements which flows around inside my head."

1. Demon Black Skies
2. Condemned
3. To The Pits
4. The Black Northern Ritual
5. Vinter
6. A Disappearing Sun

Skelethal Streaming "Subterranean Sigh"

Hot on the heels of the "Deathmanicvs Revelation" debut, released earlier this year by Iron Bonehead Productions, French death metal cult Skelethal now returns with another new MLP, "Interstellar Knowledge of the Purple Entity," set for international release on November 28th via Iron Bonehead.

Today the band premieres new track "Subterranean Sigh," which can be heard below courtesy of CVLTNation.com. The following press release was also issued:

"Once again, the duo's aim is plainly stated - absolute death worship - and once again, they wield the Metal of Death like a scythe, an axe, and blunt hammer simultaneously, all in obeisance to occult forces beyond the mien of man. Here on Interstellar Knowledge of the Purple Entity, however, Skelethal's rumbling, roiling tank-tread of a sound drives deeper into the catacombs, deeper into death metal's past.

"In many ways, one could hear this MLP and be forgiven for thinking it was originally released in 1991, so studied and authentic is its ancient crunch. Then again, Skelethal exude their own personality, and continue to expand it here with a respect toward traditions - including a gutsfucking cover of Carnage's 'Torn Apart.' And so continues the story of modern death metal's brightest new hopes, who you can hear for yourself below."

The full track listing is:

1. Subterranean Sigh
2. Sabbatical Demonic Invocation
3. Interstellar Knowledge Of The Purple Entity
4. Slaughtered From Beyond

Mutank Releases "Corporate Child" Video

Coming off this past weekend's Halloween shows in Montreal and Quebec City, Wacken Metal Canada champions Mutank premiered a new music video for "Corporate Child" to fans live at the veneues.

Now the thrashers are proud to unleash it online via their MUtube channel. Check it out below. "Corporate Child" was released in support of the "M.E.C.H. Metal" album released in early 2014, which is available as a pay what you want download via Bandcamp.

Vocalist / bassist Stephen Reynolds comments: "Leave your brain in the trash, you won't need it today. Mutank is back with our first official video for the song 'Corporate Child' from our debut album 'M.E.C.H. Metal.' This two minute fifty second speedbomb is completely self-shot, self-directed and raw as a skinned knee with editing by myself, Adam Reynolds and Justin Oakey. Join us as we thrash-mob a local shopping center, attempt to solve the unsolvable black MUbix cube and flush our brains down the toilet all in the name of good zombie-consumerist fun! Expect more visuals out of the Mutank camp soon, but for now share this with anyone you know who has poor taste, bad hearing and a penchant for snort-wrecking thrash!" More...

Our Last Enemy Posts "Wolves Of Perigord" Video

Our Last Enemy just premiered a new occult-themed lyric video for "Wolves of Perigord" today. Give it a view below, thanks to the Bloody-Disgusting.com crew.

The video contains imagery and hidden messages designed by the band, which allude to the 1766 event in France, where eighteen residents of the French town Perigord were attacked and killed by a pack of wild wolves. Vocalist Oliver Fogwell comments:

“We originally found the idea for ‘Wolves of Perigord’ by looking up animal attacks online that we would then send to each other. One day we stumbled across this story of these wolves which plagued a region called Perigord in France back in 1766. They killed 18 people and even King Louis put out a reward for their death. We found a lot of similarities between the band and a pack of wolves – constantly travelling, terrorizing and moving on from town to town, only being able to rely on each other and in the case of the wolves of perigord, persecuted for doing what comes naturally to them, which it can feel like in a band at times. What’s funny, is that the region of Perigord is no more, but the wolves are still remembered and some of them are stuffed in a museum, yet all the people who hunted and killed them are dead and forgotten. Who really won?”

Our Last Enemy released latest full-length album "Pariah" earlier this year through Eclipse Records (Mushroomhead, Bobaflex, A Breach of Silence). The album was produced by Christian Olde Wolbers (ex-Fear Factory) and recorded at Temple Studios, Los Angeles. More...
