Cancerous Womb has issued the following announcement about parting ways with the band's vocalist:
"It's with a heavy heart that we must announce the departure of our vocalist and friend Chris Lewis from Cancerous Womb.
"Chris has decided with difficulty to leave the band to concentrate on his education and personal endeavors and we all wish him the very best. Chris and I first worked on material for Womb back in 2006, and have been in bands together since I first met him well over a decade ago. It's been a fantastic journey with him on board and personally I wouldn't be who I am or where I am today without his musical influence, collaboration and friendship.
"Cancerous Womb will continue forward writing towards our 2nd album and growing, gigging, touring and adventuring! - All the best to you, Christopher!" More...

Black Tusk bassist Jonathon Athon died earlier this month after being in a motorcylce crash, and the members of the band have now issued the following statement about setting up a memorial fund:
"We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the overwhelming amount of support received in the past week.
"Many of you have been inquiring about Athon's medical bills and how you can help. As of now, they are covered. However, we would still like you to contribute if you can. Athon was a very giving person, and he thoroughly enjoyed helping others with his endless skill sets.
"Athon played a very large role in the renovation of fellow bassist and friend Jason Statts' home after he was paralyzed from a gunshot wound, and he regularly checked in on Jason to listen to music, grill out, or just provide company. Athon and his friend Keith Kozel worked together over the last decade every October to prepare the Jinx bar for their annual Halloween extravaganza.
"Keith was recently diagnosed with a degenerative kidney disease, and he is in dire need of a transplant. While Athon's medical expenses have been covered, his girlfriend Emily's have not. She has undergone surgery and faces a long road to recovery both physically and emotionally.
"So in the spirit of Jonathan Athon, we ask that you contribute to this fund that will split the proceeds among Emily, Keith, and Jason. Help Athon keep helping people. We have set up a PayPal at AthonFund@gmail.com if you care to donate. Thank you. TCBT forever."

As a geek growing up in the late 1970s and early 1980s, there was little greater joy than in paging through comics in a spinner-stand at my local grocery store. Sure, there were the usual Supermans, Batmans, Spider-Mans, Archies and Hulks, but every now and then, if I was really lucky, a copy of Marvel's "What If?" would be waiting for me. More...

California's crushing sludge/doom outfit Black Sheep Wall has released the first track off forthcoming album, "I'm Going to Kill Myself."
The track, titled "White Pig" is streaming below, courtesy of Gunshy Assassin. The new album is due out in North America on January 27th (January 26th worldwide) and the track listing is as follows:
1. The Wailing and The Gnashing...
2. Tetsuo the Dead Man
3. White Pig
Regarding the album, guitarist Scott Turner comments:
"It's crazy how much can change in a year or two, but when you think about our history those who have been following us shouldn't be surprised. We're very excited about the release of "I am Going to Kill Myself," and the debut of Brandon as our full time vocalist after doing close to 7 years of duty on bass. His voice is the voice I've been waiting to have in the band for years.
"The album was just as much a labor of love as it was an arduous and brain wracking process. Once you hear the songs you'll know what I mean. They are a test of endurance as Jackson and I purposely tried to push the limits of taste for the album which I sometimes like to think of more as a special project than a true follow up album.
"'I am Going to Kill Myself' is unique to us in that rather than sitting down for formal song writing sessions we kind of just wrote songs through conversations, and with odd symbols and notes on paper that translated to guitar, bass, and drums in the studio. As for the album art, the always amazing Jeff Rogers really came through with beyond amazing artwork that really captures not only the album, but who we are as a band. I don't think we'll ever do anything like this again so hopefully you all enjoy it, and not really want to kill yourselves after, like I wanted to while making this album." More...
Anticipating an upcoming 15th studio album release entitled "Apex Predator - Easy Meat" via Century Media Records on January 27th, Napalm Death is now launching a first online song sample as an appetizer.
Check out the track "Cesspits" below, courtesy of Decibel Magazine. While currently still on tour in Europe, Napalm Death's vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway checked in to comment on the track as follows:
"Cesspits is both literally and figuratively about people living in holes. It is perhaps one of the ultimate indignities and one of those things that a blind eye is often turned to. The subject matter called for a very savage delivery, and although there are quite a few musical facets to this song, it doesn't stop letting rip." More...

At the beginning of the year, symphonic pagan black metal project Welicoruss became international with a new lineup due to the relocation of band’s leader Alexey Boganov from snowy Siberia to Prague.
The newly joined musicians are Dmitriy Zhikharevich (Russia, bass), Gojko Maric (Serbia, guitar) and David Urban (Czech Republic, drums). The band has also now announced that the "Az Esm" album is finally ready for consumption.
The 12 songs will features a variety of guest musicians, while mixing and mastering were handled by Alexey Stecuk at Dryvga studio and booklet was created by Alex Mayhem.
Alexey Boganov comments: ”We are very happy and we would like to thank everybody, who participated in recording process and those, who shown us their patience and understanding! We are very pleased with final result, because it has exceeded all our expectations, but all additional information will be later, because now we are pretty busy celebrating it).”
Further details on the release and a Spring 2015 European tour will be announced in the future.
Polish death metal band Deivos is currently putting the final touches on a fourth full-length album, which will see release in early 2015 via Selfmadegod Records.
The new Deivos album, entitled "Theodicy," was recorded between July and November 2014 in Zed Studio (Black River, Rootwater, Frontside) with producer Tomek Zalewski, with the mastering and mixing duties scheduled to go down in December. The follow-up to 2011's "Demiurge Of The Void" features the same recording lineup, with vocalist Hubert, guitarists Tomek and Mscislaw, bassist Kamil, and drummer Krzysiek.
Guitarist Tomek comments, "The songs on the material are definitely longer and more complex compared to its predecessor. The six-song album lasts for about thirty-five minutes. It's gonna be fast, heavy, and technical. We have lower down guitar tones a bit and it gave our music much more power."
The band's first album for Selfmadegod Records, "Theodicy" is set for a February 15th, 2015 release date. The album's six songs include "Theodicy," "El Shaddai," "Ochlocracy," "Mandatory Mayhem," "Amor Sui" and "Parasite." More...
Century Media Records has issued the following announcement about inking a deal with the Karyn Crisis project Gospel Of The Witches:
"Karyn Crisis is a name worthy of more praise and attention. While select circles of people know and appreciate her prior vocals with the critically-acclaimed Crisis from 1993-2006, many are still naive to her influence and impact.
"This demure girl raged harder than many men, slugging it out with impactful live performances at hardcore and metal shows, screaming often times like a demon, other times singing like an angel. She led the way and has become an influence for female-fronted extreme bands. And then she disappeared. In the interim she made a name for herself as an artisan via her paintings and leatherwork, and now she's returned with a stellar new project, Karyn Crisis' Gospel Of The Witches, and a fabulous new album to be released next year through Century Media Records."
Karyn comments: "This band began 5 years ago in Tuscany, Italy, as an alchemical journey between Davide Tiso (Ephel Duath) and myself as we searched for a way to musically honor the Witches who came before me and who have been guiding me in Spirit, teaching me their Ancient Ways."
The album was financed by fans via websites like Kickstarter and Etsy; then Karyn together with Davide Tiso, Ross Dolan (Immolation), Mike Hill (Tombs) and Charlie Schmid (Vaura) recorded the 13 songs at The Basement Recordings in North Carolina with producer Jamie King.
Upon completion of the album, Karyn began shopping the album and reconnected with Century Media President Marco Barbieri, who had signed Crisis back in 1993 when he worked at Metal Blade Records. More...
After four years of silence, Solefald (covered in our look at underground avant-garde bands) returns with "Norrønasongen. Kosmopolis Nord," an experimental soundtrack to the fjords and mountains of Norway, and a hymn to the nature of the North.
A prequel to the eclectic duo's forthcoming "Kosmopolis Sud" full-length set for release next year, "Norrønasongen. Kosmopolis Nord" was created for release on vinyl, boasts a crew totaling ten musicians, and finds Soleflad venturing into new and unfamiliar soundscapes. The digital edition is also available now via iTunes here.
"Norrønasongen picks up the torch from 2010's Norrøn Livskunst illuminating the same barrenness through the prism of prog rock, electro, folk and noise," elaborates vocalist/guitarist/programmer Cornelius Von Jackhelln. "Norrønasongen is our first release with all the lyrics written and sung in our mother tongue. Norse Jugendstil for eyes, minds and ears: Solefald are delighted to be back with their boots on!"
Adds vocalist/synthesizer/programmer, Lars Are Nedland, "As long-time fans of the progressive movement of the late '60s/early '70s, it was in the cards that Solefald would dive into the world of melotrons at some point. Norrønasongen is a progressive folk-pop-noise release, and sets the scene for the forthcoming album Kosmopolis Sud by being nothing like it. We're Solefald after all!"
The track listing is:
II. Det Siste Landskap (An Icelandic Odyssey Part IV)
SOLEFALD Vs. Sturmgeist & The Fall Of Rome
IV. Norrøna: Ljodet Som Ljoma
V. Songen: Vargen
Founded in 2010, Amniac is a young band from Piraeus, Greece that plays an emotionally intense and heavy post-metal. The band is releasing new album "Infinite" today - November 19th - and Distroball Records also comments:
"The four-piece don’t wish to be cornered into that particular genre or any other, but do admit to be influenced by the style’s two biggest exponents, Isis and Neurosis. 2011 saw the release of their debut demo, 'Dias Xela Leurc.' which was met with immense critical acclaim and allowed the band to play numerous shows throughout Greece.
"Now in 2014 and with a solidified line-up, Amniac are ready to present their first full-length album 'Infinite.' Recorded/mixed at Echovrihio Studios in Greece and mastered at Audiosiege Studios in Portland, USA (Sleep, High On Fire), 'Infinite' is comprised of seven mesmerising tracks, layered with intense, monolithic riffs and massive melodies that carry an emotional weight far greater than you ever anticipated from such a young act." After bringing on new bassist Jacob Juelsgaard, Pit Of Carnage's Benjamin "GoreDrummer" Lauritsen has issued the following announcement online about the band parting ways with its vocalist:
"For almost a month now I had no contact to Kasper Hansen (vocalist). I got a message today that he's quitting Pit Of Carnage, Reasons are to fucking stupid to post on Facebook...
"I'm sad to lose my band brother, though I'm sure it will be much better for Pit Of Carnage in the future and with the new upcoming album. I have done 98% of the work in Pit Of Carnage. We will have Peter Juelsgaard on bass, I will take drums/guitars, and I'm fucking gonna do the vocals, guttural style! GET READY TO GET EAR FUCKED!" More...
One-man Norwegian black metal project Blodhemn is pleased to spew forth sophomore full-length, "H7," upon unsuspecting ears. Led by one Invisus, "H7" follows the "Brenn Alle Bruer" EP and "Holmengraa" debut.
Where tracks like "Flammens Virke" and "Slettet av Tid" disgorge blasphemous bile and ravenous anger, "Evig Heder" and "Veiten 3" tell of recent Norwegian history of war and of those who defended their country at all costs.
"The H7 monogram is used by Blodhemn as a symbol of Norwegian patriotism," reveals Invisus, "an homage to late heroes and the hardship they had to endure. This, as well as the traditional tropes of black metal, take a large part in creating that trademark Norwegian grimness, lyrically. But my love for the west coast of my country, with its capricious weather and its grey, barren landscapes are a source of inspiration I always return to, be it words or music."
Such is the case with closing track, "Holmengraa," about the unforgiving treachery of the North Sea and the often brutal consequences for those who dare it; the majesty of its riffs are outdone only by the viciousness of its subject matter. The track listing is:
1. Flammenes Virke
2. Slettet Av Tid
3. Evig Heder
4. Veiten 3
5. Åndenes Ansikt
7. Holmengraa More...

Checking in from Duper Studios in Bergen, members of Norwegian progressive extreme metal outfit Enslaved today offer the fifth installment in the seven-part “Diary of Mad Men” series shedding insight into the band’s upcoming as-yet-untitled thirteenth studio album, set for an early 2015 release.
“Sunday in Bergen means slight hangovers and double-parked Catholics (breaking a few laws to stop by and get forgiveness for last week’s broken laws is okay), but neither of these annoying phenomena can stop this show,” declares Enslaved guitarist & composer Ivar Bjørnson. “I and good old Icy Dale are super-happy with the guitar sound thus far. The Peavey 6505 + classic set-ups are the usual suspects, but it is the first time I am using my new custom built Futhark guitar… and it is making all the difference! It is simply crushing - like the guy with his head in the vice once said.”
Enslaved guitarist Arve “Ice Dale” Isdal adds: “Our new album will continue where 'RIITIIR' left off. It is extreme, progressive, and brutal. To me it sounds darker and heavier than before. I am sure that when we lay down all our crazy shit on the album, it will blow your minds!”
Main recordings for the new album are taking place at Duper and Solslottet Studios in Bergen, Norway with additional recordings done at Conclave & Earshot Studios (presided over by Enslaved members Larsen and Ice Dale) and Ivar Bjørnson’s Peersonal Sound Studios.
Stay tuned for more details, and you can read the fourth entry in the series over at this location.
A band is an idea. It can exist as a vision in the architect's mind, but is never complete. It is only when this vision reaches its audience, that it turns into something more and greater than the sum of its parts. An artist can reach his audience through images, stories and crafts. Einherjer's derives comes from a spoken culture -- a musical culture -- and it is from the stage where it is most accurately conveyed.
Now the horns of war sound again as Einherjer gears up to release sixth full-length, "Av Oss, For Oss." Written and produced by the band and mixed by Matt Hyde (Hatebreed, Slayer, Children Of Bodom, Monster Magnet et al), the record thrusts forth eight elaborately executed war hymns, due out January 13th, 2015.
Elaborates the band: "Our Norse heritage is a phenomenon that reaches far beyond what one can hear alone. It is an amalgamation of the mystique and sagas of old, of songs and poems, of woodcutting and sword grinding and the Vikings merciless way of life.
"It's a cultural patchwork that fills the consciousness with the brutal majesty of the Nordic nature, the elemental strain, of mighty longships plowing the black seas to reach unknown shores. The wisdom of the gods and their Valhalla. Of cultural encounters and trade. Of violence and brutality. Of tough men in a tough time. Our hometown Haugesund also rings with a historic sound, and from our own shores on the west coast of Norway the influence of the Vikings stretched towards the sea and the world beyond. The adventurers, pioneers, poets and craftsmen have inspired Einherjer to go their own way.
"The Vikings courage and boldness have inspired us to never compromise our vision: A vision that is a unique, self-made, original and modern interpretation of our mighty Nordic heritage. Einherjer have never used their banner to spread cowardly and ignorant propaganda. We never seek entry in the un-culture extremists taint our ancestors with. We wish to give people in all countries knowledge to what we feel is a mysterious and fascinating culture that can be shared and enjoyed by many. Our history rings with the same sound and side by side with other cultures worldwide. From the age of the Egyptian pharaohs, the splendor of the Roman Empire, the genius of the Inka, the bastions of Constantinople, the wonders of the east, the honor of the Samurai and the Greek philosophers. Frontiers Music Srl, announced the release of a new album written and performed by two Norwegian rock legends Jorn Lande (ex-MasterPlan) and Trond Holter (Jorn/Wig Wam), under the band moniker Dracula. The debut release “Swing of Death" is set for release on January 23rd in Europe and January 27th in North America. Pre-orders can be made at this location.
The concept release was inspired by the life of Count Vlad the III, Prince of Wallachia, widely known as Vlad, The Impaler or by his patronymic name Vlad Dracul(a). The whole story explores the inner struggle inside the multifaceted and engorging character that this mysterious 15th Century personality was, while also taking into account some of the metaphysical aspects that passed into literature, forming the whole basis of the vampire mythos.
Jorn Lande – who impersonates Dracula, is the main character of the album and the female parts are sung by Norwegian singer Lena Fløitmoen (representing Mina/Lucy from the Bram Stoker book). The drama of the story reveals Dracula’s inner battle, where he still remembers what true love was, and as he wandered the Earth for centuries with a thirst for blood, his loneliness and desire to be able to love again has led him to the brink of insanity. In the original Bram Stoker version, he leaves Transylvania by ship and when he meets Lucy's best friend, she reminds him so much of his first love Mina, that he becomes obsessed. His mission is to take her as his bride, and make her Queen of the dark. More...
