Pit Stories: Protokult Shares A Trio Of Tales

Tuesday has rolled around yet again, and that means its time once more to dive into the pit!

Each week bands from across the metal spectrum (and spanning the entire globe!) check in with us to share their most memorable Pit Stories.

You may recall some weeks back that the beer loving folk metal band Protokult shared a story about an unwanted flautist taking to the stage.

This week the band has returned to share a trio of stories covering all sorts of on and off stage shenanigans, from spilled beer to a desperate attempt to get back on stage during a song and even the disappointment of meeting a band that didn't turn out to be as awesome as you thought.

Lemons Made, Beer-Drenched Gear...

A recent pit experience occurred at our own CD release gig. We were playing to a packed punk club; so although cozy, it was jam-packed, smoldering hot and aesthetically challenged. Throw in some beer wenches who joined us on stage with alcoholic refreshments and it was a party set in full swing! Mid-way through our set (I found this out afterwards), a young woman (or beer wench) got bumped in the pit and her entire pint ended up seeping into our guitarist's pedal board. His signal began cutting in and out until finally, it completely died out. When life gives you lemons folks, make lemonade! Which is what Jeremy "Vodnik" Jackson precisely did. Rather than being a party pooper and sulking off-stage, this 6'4 pot-smoking, son-of-a-bitch began dancing moronically and next thing we know, he dove head-first into the pit! Most of our audience (who conveniently happen to be women most of the time) were certainly intimidated and we lost sight of him for a few minutes, so it's safe to say Jackson landed on his head=).

Roadburn Festival Confirms EyeHateGod, Focus

The organizers of the Roadburn Festival have checked in with the following announcement about new confirmations for the 2015 edition:

"We're beyond excited to welcome seminal New Orleans, Louisana sluge-legends Eyehategod back to the 20th edition of Roadburn Festival at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands, with two sets of their unique, Southern hardcore-blues-sludge-and-doom on Thursday, April 9 at the main stage, and in Het Patronaat, Friday, April 10.

"With its hateful, hopeless, anguished vocals set against extra-slow Iommi-inspired riffing, Eyehategod are credited with founding sludge-core, one of the most vital new genres of metal to emerge from the 1990’s. Countless bands have followed their footsteps, and after more than 20 years of creating some of the most corrosive, vile music known to man, Eyehategod still hasn’t lost the piss and vinegar, propaganda, and despair that fueled them back in 1988.

"Over the years, Eyehategod have had more than their fair share of hardship, and recently suffered the tragic loss of drummer and founding member, Joey LaCaze. The new, self titled release from Eyehategod, the follow up to 2000's Confederacy Of Ruined Lives, sees LaCaze's drum tracks appear posthumously on this classic of the genre.

"The album personifies desperation and addiction in the various backwaters of forgotten America, punctuated by the N’awlins sound of rebellion and pollution resulting in triumph over adversity. Come experience transcendence through malevolence as Eyehategod deface Roadburn 2015.

"We’re equally excited to announce that Dutch prog rock legends Focus have been confirmed for Houses of the Holistic, Ivar Bjørnson‘s (Enslaved) and Wardruna's Einar 'Kvitrafn' Selvik‘s curated Roadburn event on Friday, April 10 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands. More...

Just For Fun

First "Metal Grasshopper" Episode Posted Online

Beginning today and threatening to melt your computer every Tuesday through November 11th comes Metal Grasshopper, a new web series in which comedian Dave Hill travels to the wilds of Louisiana to get schooled in the ways of heavy metal by legendary frontman Philip H. Anselmo (Down, Pantera, Superjoint Ritual, Philip H. Anselmo And The Illegals, et al).

Dave begs Phil to mold him into "the baddest metal motherfucker of all time." Phil begrudgingly relents and the abuse and absurdity reach epic levels.

If you like stuff with corpse paint, burning pentagrams, medieval weaponry, irritable goats rented by the hour, couples counseling, delicious smoothie recipes, and real live chickens, you will love Metal Grasshopper, because it has all that stuff and then a bunch of other awesome stuff on top of that too.

Over the course of the series' five episodes, Anselmo educates Hill on everything from headbanging to crowd work to even the most extreme of all breakfast cereals. The journey begins today: check out part 1 below, thanks to Metal Injection. More...

Disigma Calling It Quits

Cody Golob from Disigma has issued the following announcement online via Facebook about the band deciding to call it quits:

"Good news and bad news.

"We've put a lot of effort into this project and will always love and appreciate everyone who gave us a listen starting all the way back from Colonies to the self-titled EP.

"We will unfortunately not be doing the split with our buddies in Prime Meridian due to some circumstances we cannot fix and will not be continuing as a band. This project has made both of us as happy as we have ever been at times and wouldn't ever take back the time, money, and feelings we put into everything we have released.

"That being said, we will be releasing one last song called 'Ghost Forgive Me' in the next month or so after we finishing up mastering and mixing the track. I personally cannot thank the 1,950 of you for giving us a chance and felt the vibes we created through our music to represent our feelings and beliefs in the most outward fashion.

"After we release our last track, we would appreciate it if you guys could take the time and check out Josh's upcoming band called Ashfield which has a really cool This Will Destroy You sound to it.

"I also have a band in the making called The Drowned God which has a heavy post metal/experimental sound to it which WILL be playing shows locally in the Philly area. This is something I've wanted in a band for a long time and am determined to make happen. We will be posting our pages and music on here as well as our personal pages when we release these. Thank you guys again."
