Thursday, October 2nd saw Avatar, one of the most intriguing and visually arresting metal acts to emerge from Sweden this decade, perform in a support slot for Mushroomhead at Phase 2 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Well prior to showtime, as early arrivals were casually gathering outside the venue doors, I sat down at a table in the adjacent restaurant with Johannes Eckerström, a true frontman if ever there was one. An outgoing giant of a young man, both in physical height and in spirit, Johannes is the latest in a long line of theatrically-inclined metal figureheads such as Marilyn Manson and King Diamond.
With the donning of trademark ghoulish face paint still a couple hours away, the German-Swedish singer and I were able to relate as contemporaries on a multitude of topics, starting with his band itself and running the gamut from musical nostalgia, to “selling out,” to nü-metal woes, to piracy, to cultural differences, to the “Rock God” myth and the “groupie mentality,” and much more.
We discussed artists as diverse as KISS, Foo Fighters, Christina Aguilera, Black Sabbath, Mayhem, Pink Floyd, Opeth, Cannibal Corpse, Slipknot, In Flames, Rammstein, System Of A Down, Limp Bizkit, Soilwork, Blind Guardian, Devin Townsend, The Beatles, Beethoven, Machine Head, Nine Inch Nails, the Jonas Brothers, and Led Zeppelin.
If ever an interview could be described as a portrait of a person, I daresay it would be this one. I give you Johannes Eckerström of Avatar - unabridged, unedited, and uncensored. More...
Orphalis has checked in with the following announcement about recruiting a new drummer:
"We sadly have to announce you that Kai, our drummer, has to completely step back from making music due to his family situation. We wish him all the best for his future and his family!
"But we are also proud to announce you the joining of Simon Heinen who will take place as our new drummer. Some of you may know him from his older bands Jack Slater or Warfield Within.
"We can't give you any exact dates of our second album or anything like that yet, but we don't have to cancel any of our shows in 2015.

Circuitry - formed from the smoldering, rotten corpse of Dark Empire - has confirmed a November 4th release date for the band's debut, self-titled album.

Dark Descent Records will release "Wresting the Revelation of Futility" from Edmonton, Alberta’s Dire Omen on November 12th. The label comments:

After signing with In At The Deep Ends Records, Cavorts will release debut album "Got Your Brass" on October 27th. The label also comments:
"Since emerging out of the northern frontier town of Barnsley in 2012, Cavorts have toured the UK with Dragonforce, played a sold-out Leeds O2 Academy show with Skindred, released a debut EP on distinguished Canadian label Distort Records (Alexisonfire/ Cancer Bats) and received national radio play on Radio 1.
"Now they are back bearing a Jason Sanderson (Lavotchkin, Rolo Tomassi, The Legacy) produced/mixed and mastered album, which is crammed with the concoction of heavy, energetic and southern stained groove and riffage that their debut EP ‘Time Told’ flaunted.
"Cavorts uphold a strong punk rock work ethic and place huge importance on taking their explosive live shows across the country. This will continue as they play a string of dates to support the album release. Dates TBA.
"Creating hi-octane anthems that you can sink your teeth into is what Cavorts strive for and with Got Your Brass they’ve undoubtedly struck gold … Turn it up loud! For fans of Motorhead, Early Baroness, The Bronx, Sick Of It All and Hot Water Music."

Dallas, Texas-based avant/tech death metal trio Baring Teeth is preparing for the follow-up to 2011 debut album, "Atrophy," with the mangling "Ghost Chorus Among Old Ruins" confirmed to drop via Willowtip Records on November 25th. The label comments:
"Previously known as Soviet, Baring Teeth is an act formed by three musicians having collectively spent time playing in a plethora of acts including Cleric, Between The Buried And Me, Broadcast Sea and others.
"Following their initial demo, Willowtip signed the band for the 2011 release of their debut album, 'Atrophy.' 'Ghost Chorus Among Old Ruins' shows Baring Teeth sharpening its attack, the unsettled aggression of previous material heightened to a manic, primal belligerence. Immersive, hypnotic, and haunting, the album melds seemingly opposing characteristics -- streamlined songwriting and dizzying technicality, ambience and brute force, density and angularity, order and chaos -- into a fully realized, cohesive listening experience.
"Without sacrificing originality, the groundwork of Meshuggah and Gorguts gives in to modern and gritty dissonance where one may at times be reminded of everything from the technical intensity of The Dillinger Escape Plan and Flourishing, to the ominous realms of Deathspell Omega and Ulcerate. Comparative compliments aside, the band's music continually applies and releases tension, while continually spiraling into a tension-infused amalgamation of chaotic but ultimately natural and captivating experimental death metal."
The album was recorded by Alex Bhore (This Will Destroy You) at Elmwood Recording, mixed by Keith Souza and Seth Manchester at Machines With Magnets (The Body, Battles, Daughters), and mastered by Alan Douches (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Swans). The track listing is:
1. An Illusion Of Multiple Voices
4. The Great Unwashed
5. Terra Nullius
6. Dripping Sun
7. The Unwilling
8. Ghost Chorus Among Old Ruins More...
