"A Life Less Lived - The Gothic Box" Details

Billboard.com reports that Rhino have rounded up the top names in goth rock (while only semi-relevant to metal, there are a few relevant bands involved) for the four-disc boxed set "A Life Less Lived -- The Gothic Box," due Sept. 19. Despite loathing the titular term that came to describe their music, bands like Joy Division, the Cure, Bauhaus and the Jesus & Mary Chain transcended labeling to revolutionize rock in the late '70s and early '80s.

Key tracks from those bands are featured on "A Life Less Lived," including opener "Dead Souls" by Joy Division and Bauhaus' "She's in Parties." Other acts represented throughout include the Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Love And Rockets, the Mission (U.K.), the Chameleons, the Damned, Skinny Puppy and AFI.

The fourth disc in the box is a DVD with such evergreen videos as Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead," the Cure's "Lullaby," Echo & the Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon," a live version of the Cult's "Spiritwalker" and Love And Rockets' "Ball of Confusion."

Here is the track list for "A Life Less Lived": More...

Falconer Completes Work On New Album

Swedish epic/power metallers FALCONER have finished recording their fifth studio album, entitled "Northwind" — their first since the departure of singer Kristoffer Göbel and return of Mathias Blad.

Commented guitarist Stefan Weinerhall: "'Northwind', the fifth album of FALCONER, is a return to the folkish style after some experiment on the last one. Very melodic and catchy, and with Mathias back on vocals he gives the album that extra epic touch that none other can do. The album is not a concept album although the title sums up the atmosphere of both the music and the lyrics. From catchy metal to sweet ballads to medieval minstrels gone electrified, there´s something for all tastes."

"Northwind" will be released as a limited first edition featuring a bonus CD containing four Swedish folk songs and a video documentary of the album recordings.

"Northwind" track listing:

01. Northwind
02. Waltz with the Dead
03. Spirit of the Hawk
04. Legend and the Lore
05. Catch the Shadows
06. Tower of the Queen
07. Long Gone By
08. Perjury and Sanctity
09. Fairyland Fanfare
10. Himmel Så Trind
11. Blinded
12. Delusion
13. Home of the Knave
14. Black Tarn (instr)
15. Child of the Wild 2006 (Japan bonus)

Bonus CD:

01. Kristallen Den Fina
02. Ridom Ridom
03. Liten Vätte
04. Vårvindar Friska
+ video documentary of the recording

Mnemic New Track To Feature Napalm Death Singer

Danish modern metallers MNEMIC have announced that their upcoming third album will feature guest appearances by Jeff Walker (CARCASS) and Shane Embury (NAPALM DEATH).

Commented guitarist Mircea Gabriel Eftemie: "Last weekend, we hooked up with two fine gentelmen, Jeff and Shane from U.K. grind masters CARCASS and NAPALM DEATH. We grew up on the 'Symphonies', 'Necroticism' and 'Harmony Corruption' records, and it's nothing short of an honour to have such legendary musicians on our new album. Jeff did an amazing job singing along with Guillaume [ex-SCARVE and current MNEMIC singer Guillaume Bideau] and Shane doing back-ups. The song turned out really brutal and we simply can't wait to hear the final mix!"

Terrorizer Removed From Auditory Assault Festival

TERRORIZER will not be playing now, but don't worry, we have a back-up plan which includes 2 headlining quality bands that are nearly confirmed.

Want the explanation? We'll be glad to give you one. This is a very, very messy situation and we still can't believe how out of hand it's gotten. In the 4 years of organizing festivals, we've never had to experience such unprofessionalism as we have with the agency which we dealt with for TERRORIZER. Deadlines and promises were never met, but we were patient the entire time. We were promised clearance to announce TERRORIZER on Monday, then were asked to wait until Tuesday to announce it. Well it was announced and suddenly today we received emails from the agency demanding that we take it off the web site and that the deal was never confirmed, despite the fact that we were given a 100% confirmation from the agency that it would happen. A whole lot of money was on the table from our side for this deal, we were patient the whole time, and now we are being called assholes, meatheads, dickheads and whatever else just for asking why it's our problem that the agency fucked everything up. Each time I called the agency, they hung up on me immediately and clearly could not talk to me like a man. So whatever, we'd like to put this shit behind us and move on. I'm taking down the AA fest site for a very short time, and then we'll re-launch it with 2 headlining quality bands and the rest of the billing. We think you won't be disappointed with what will come instead of this TERRORIZER disaster. The bright side is that tickets have not yet gone on sale and this was only announced a few days ago.

Iron Maiden Announce Headlining US Tour Dates

Iron Maiden has announced that they will be beginning their 2006 World Tour with eight dates across the USA and three dates in Canada starting October 4th in Hartford, CT.

Tickets for the shows will start going on to the general public from the weekend of August 12th, with details of local box office and on-sale times at ironmaiden.com. Iron Maiden has also arranged for a special fan club pre-order for all shows beginning August 1 and continuing through to the public on-sale date.

This follows the recent announcement that their highly anticipated new studio album, "A Matter Of Life And Death," will be released by Sanctuary Records on September 5th.

Says Bruce Dickinson "This is the first time we've started a tour in the States for many, many years. It's going to be great to get out there so the fans can get to hear the new material and see the new show first for a change. We're all incredibly pleased with the album, and the tremendous response of those people who have had the chance to hear it so far. Their reaction has been phenomenal and we expect to play a lot of it on tour."

"We will be bringing the full show to America, which we are currently putting the final touches to, and we fully intend to make it as spectacular and memorable as we can. And of course, our mate Eddie has already booked a place on the plane with us."

On the topic of A Matter of Life and Death, Bruce comments, "This album has to be our best since working with Kevin Shirley (Producer). There is such a wide scope of musicianship on this album. Every one of us has put everything into this record and it's really paid off."

The upcoming North American dates represent the beginning of the "A Matter of Life and Death World Tour," which will continue into Japan and then travel through to Europe, finishing with two shows at London's Earls Court Arena just before Christmas. All the shows on the European leg have been on sale since March with the majority of shows already sold out months in advance.

Accompanying Iron Maiden on the USA tour (excluding the Hartford and Los Angeles) are new UK metal sensation, Bullet for My Valentine, who have been receiving rave reviews while on tour with Guns N' Roses throughout Europe.

Coldworker Sign to Relapse Records

Relapse Records announces the signing of Sweden’s COLDWORKER.

COLDWORKER features former NASUM drummer Anders Jakobson and includes guitarists Anders Baerilsson and Andre Alvinzi, bassist Oskar Palsson, and vocalist Joel Fornbrant. The band, formed by Jakobson in January, has been hard at work on their debut album The Contaminated Void.

On the development of The Contaminated Void, which contains the band’s first songs, Jakobson says: “This is probably the fastest first album ever made! I mean we've gone from not knowing each other to having a mastered copy of our first full length recording in our hands in approximately five months.” Fornbrant adds: “I hope people will get a good feeling of spontaneity listening to the album.”

“The reason everything came together so quickly,” Jakobson continues, “is because all the members are deeply involved in the songwriting process. It sort of clicked from the first rehearsal in February and we've surfed on that creative wave ever since, sacrificing lots of hours in the rehearsal room. We came out with something that was both fast and furious but also heavy and a little bit technical. Playing these songs has been something of a challenge for me as the style is completely different from what I’ve done before. I can’t wait to share these songs with the world!”

The Contaminated Void was recorded by the band this past June and mixed by Dan Swano. Advance song titles include: “The Interloper”, “An Unforgiving Season”, “The Contaminated Void”, “Return To Ashes”, “Strain At The Leash”, “Flammable”, “Antidote”, “Heart Shaped Violence” and “Generations Decay”. The Contaminated Void is expected to see a European release this Fall, followed by a North American release in early 2007. A three minute audio sampling of The Contaminated Void can be heard here.

More information on COLDWORKER can be found via the band’s official website and MySpage page.

Guns N Roses Decline Encore Due To Cowards?

GUNS N' ROSES's management has issued the following press release regarding the band's abbreviated performance in Newcastle, England last Wednesday (July 19):

GUNS N' ROSES want the people of Newcastle to know that the crowd at their sold-out show Wednesday night was terrific. The band played a sweaty two hour show on the hottest night in a lifetime bolstered by the audience's incredible support. Unfortunately, the band was not able to give the crowd the encore they deserved due to the behaviour of a couple of cowards in the audience.

GUNS N' ROSES keyboard player Dizzy Reed explained: "Newcastle was one of the best gigs of the entire tour. I had puddles of sweat underneath my keyboards and loved every second of it except when some idiots decided to throw things at the stage. When Axl got hit the first time, the audience pointed out who threw the object and security tossed him out, so we came back. Then Axl got hit in the mouth with another object, so thanks to the behavior of two morons who obviously don't know how to behave at a rock concert, the show ended with no encores. I've been in this band for sixteen years and stupid shit like throwing stuff at the stage is something we won't tolerate. We're not targets, we're musicians."

Guitarist Robin Finck stated, "We had a great time Wednesday night and Axl sang his ass off but you do not wait around to get hit in the mouth for a third time."

GUNS N' ROSES vocalist Axl Rose had this to say: "Getting hit wasn't a big deal. We stopped the song and gave a warning. We came back and started the song over and completed it. We then said goodnight. The house lights went down and I got hit a second time, in the mouth, by a solid object thrown by someone in the audience. After having warned the crowd that we would leave, and having played more than two hours, we left the stage and called it a night with the full support of everyone in the band, our guests and management. Izzy was the first to immediately support the decision verbally to me personally before I had physically left the stage area. Tommy and Frank came to my dressing room to say how much they appreciated the decision to not continue under those conditions, and express their support for not tolerating anyone throwing items at the stage with a negative intent. This has been GNR's policy since playing Donington in 1988. We thank everyone for coming, we hope everyone got home safely and we hope to play Newcastle again — hopefully without those looking for enjoyment at others expense. Cheers!"

Cavalera Excited About Possible Sepultura Reunoin

SOULFLY frontman Max Cavalera recently spoke to Holland's Toazted.com about the possibility of a reunion with his former SEPULTURA bandmates at some point in the not-too-distant future. Asked about the rumor that a reunited SEPULTURA was in talks several months ago to play this year's Ozzfest, Max said, "There's been a lot of rumors. SEPULTURA is one of the most rumored things out there. [Laughs] I talked to my brother [ex-SEPULTURA drummer Igor Cavalera] recently. He has a new son named Antonio, which is my middle name. He says he looks a lot like me. I've only seen a picture. I plan to visit him sometime next year. We're in a very good relationship, which is great, after all this bullshit. Ten years… Life is too short to hold [grudges]. So I think in a weird way, God has a way to manage these things and he's putting it all together now. With or without the reunion — I don't really care — it's important that we're brothers… blood, family… it's a great thing. But to tell you the truth, it would be cool to have a reunion. Even my kids wanna see it. My [stepson] Richie is like, 'Oh, my God, I've gotta… I know I saw SEPULTURA, but I was too little, I don't remember.' And SEPULTURA has touched so many people. So it would be really, really cool."

With regards to how a SEPULTURA reunion might affect SOULFLY, Max said, "I think SOULFY [and SEPULTURA] are completely different things. SOULFLY has its own identity and its own vibe. And it will not conflict with SEPULTURA, I don't think — it's two completely different things. And touring with BLACK SABBATH last year — I was really inspired. It was so good to see… Those guys, they hated each other for a long period, and you see that they make up and they go on tour, and they… I don't know. You can really see that Ozzy loves BLACK SABBATH. It's in his blood. He loves [the band]. How can you not? It was inspiring for me. So I think I understand more now why people want to see [a] SEPULTURA [reunion]. It makes more sense now than it did… When we first split up, I was like, 'No, I'm never doing that shit again. Screw this, I hate this shit,' but I think different now. It's working itself [out]. When it happens, it'll happen, and it'll be good."

Ozzy Osbourne Struggles At Ozzfest

Jon M. Gilbertson of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reviewed this year's Ozzfest when it hit the the Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin on Saturday (July 22). An excerpt from his review follows:

The traveling heavy-metal mega-show known as Ozzfest has lasted for 11 years thus far, and a lot of that longevity might have to do with the man for whom the festival is named: John Michael Osbourne, a.k.a. Ozzy.

Nevertheless, when his festival stopped by the Alpine Valley Music Theatre on Saturday, Ozzy was headlining the second stage (normally for lesser-known bands) about 4 p.m. (so as not to interfere with the main stage's entertainment, which began after his set odd scheduling for a man nicknamed "the Prince of Darkness").

If he didn't melt in the light, he didn't shine, either. He displayed his usual demeanors — that of a 12-year-old child when excited about audience response and that of a schoolmarm when gently exasperated about insufficient audience response — but he didn't match his legend.

Normally, the classic songs, from power ballad "Mama, I'm Coming Home" to the ever-barreling "Crazy Train", would have carried Ozzy, as would have the solid three- piece band, including solo-heavy guitarist Zakk Wylde.

Yet Ozzy was not in tune, vocally, with the band or in sync with the crowd, problems all the more sadly evident without the sort of eerie, Halloween-style power he can have under cover of night.
