Korn Guitarist To Start Multi-Genre Label

KORN guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer has announced plans to form his own record company.

"I'm looking to put together a really eclectic record label that's only for the artists," Munky said during a live appearance on the nationally syndicated radio show "Rockline" this past Monday (July 17). "I want to give back what I've been given, which is the opportunity to make music and make a living. I want it to be multi-genre — hip hop, rock, jazz. I want to sign a jazz band later. Right now I have three acts that I'm about to sign so I'm really excited."

KORN played two songs acoustically last night (Tuesday, July 18) on ABC-TV's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" The performance marked only the second national television appearance ever by KORN, following last year's spot as the musical guests on "Saturday Night Live". It's also just the second unplugged performance of the band's career after a four-song stint on AOL's "Acoustic Sessions" this past April. The group performed singles "Twisted Transistor" and "Coming Undone", both from its latest studio album, "See You On The Other Side".

As for whether KORN plans to incorporate acoustic sets into its headlining run on the upcoming Family Values tour, singer Jonathan Davis recently told Launch he hasn't ruled it out. "Everyone's asking that and I don't know," he said. "We'll see once we get into rehearsals. It would be cool 'cause we've been doing it a lot lately and everybody's really been responding to it and liking it a lot, so we'll see. I don't know. It's just, it's weird — I think it would have to be acoustic, all acoustic, or all heavy. I don't know. We'll have to see."

Davis has been home in Los Angeles recovering from a rare and potentially fatal blood disorder that forced KORN to cancel most of a European tour last month.

The band will begin its headlining stint on the Family Values tour on July 27 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with DEFTONES, STONE SOUR, 10 YEARS, FLYLEAF and others.

KORN has added a handful of solo headlining dates around Family Values stops, including August 1 in Orlando, Florida, August 8 in Corpus Christi, Texas, and August 9 in Oklahoma City.

U Weekly Interview With Dragonforce

Brian O'Neill of UWeekly.com recently conducted an interview with DRAGONFORCE guitarist Herman Li. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

U Weekly: Herman, enquiring minds want to know... Dude, how do you shred so hard?

Herman: "(Laughter) I don't know! That's one of those hard to answer questions. We just play what we think sounds cool and if people think that's cool then we have something in common."

U Weekly: It does surprise many that you never took any formal lessons in your life...

Herman: "No, I pretty much learned from watching videos and listening to music, things like that. I never had any guitar lessons or anything like that. I just played and tried different things and work it out and see what works and what doesn't. I can't read music either. I did think about (taking lessons) but I never really had the time. I used to skip my music lessons when I was in school, anyway. All that stuff about timing and reading, I just skipped it and didn't go."

U Weekly: You call yourself "video game metal." Where does that come from?

Herman: "Our musical influences actually come from video game music! Games in the '80s had great melodies because back than, with such shitty sound to work with then, I guess they had to make great melodies."

U Weekly: Is DRAGONFORCE the only "real" metal band on Ozzfest?

Herman: "It's hard to define what metal is. I think there are a lot of metal bands on Ozzfest — you can say they pretty much are all metal bands — but metal has evolved. As times progress, things change and people approach it differently. People think that metal has to have solos — which I actually don't disagree because metal is the only kind of music that you really can kind of let your guitar go sometimes — but I think there are a lot of great metal bands on Ozzfest like STRAPPING YOUNG LAD. There are some cool bands onstage."

U Weekly: Regardless of what it exactly is, bands that sound like you are not getting signed to big labels such as Roadrunner and playing Ozzfest. What do you think accounts for your rapidly growing popularity?

Herman: "I think it's because the way we approach the music us mixing up styles makes us different from those other bands. That and our live performance is what make us DRAGONFORCE. We do have an identity, people hear our songs and they know who we are."

Q & A With Arch Enemy's Angela Gossow

ARCH ENEMY frontwoman Angela Gossow has posted the following message on her official MySpace page:

"I get so many wonderful messages every day it is almost overwhelming. I am sorry, but it is impossible to answer them all.. So I have collected the most frequently asked questions and will answer them here in one go:

Q: What are space cookies?

Angela: "They are my fave bedtime sweets. Their main ingredient is this lovely green plant called cannabis in its dried, processed form. I highly recommend the book 'Cannabis A History' from Martin Booth. It is literally food for thought. Remember though: Everything you consume can turn into a drug if you OVERconsume.. Food, alcohol, cigarettes, whatever — and space cookies too."

Q: Is this the REAL Angela?

Angela: "Yes, it is really ME. It would very scary, if somebody else out there would have my private pictures and could answer all these questions."

Q: What music influences [you], what are [your] fave bands?

Angela: "I am a metalhead. Period. There are no skeletons in the closet, no EMINEM or BRITNEY SPEARS in between my CDs. Its all pure fucking metal: ARCH ENEMY, ASPHYX, AUTOPSY, ACCEPT, ARMAGEDDON, ANNIHILATOR, BOLTHTROWER, BLACK SABBATH, BEHEMOTH, CARNAGE, CANDLEMASS, CARCASS, CELTIC FROST, CORONER, DIMMU BORGIR, DISMEMBER, DEATH, DEICIDE, DARK ANGEL, DEATH ANGEL, DANKO JONES, EXODUS, EUCHARIST, ENTOMBED, EDGE OF SANITY, GRAVE, GOJIRA, HALFORD, IMMORTAL, INCUBUS, ILLDISPOSED, JUDAS PRIEST, KING DIAMOND, MASSACRE, MASSACRA, MEMENTO MORI, MALMSTEEN, METALLICA, MALEVOLENT CREATION, MERCIFUL FATE, MY DYING BRIDE, MORBID ANGEL, NEVERMORE, NUCLEAR ASSAULT, OVERKILL, OBITUARY, OLD MANS CHILD, PUNGENT STENCH, POSSESSED, PESTILENCE, PANTERA, QUEEN, QUEENSRYCHE, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, SEPULTURA, SARCOFAGO, SADUS, SLAYER, SOLITUDE AETURNUS, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS, THE HAUNTED, TESTAMENT, TERRORIZER, UNLEASHED, VITAL REMAINS, VENOM, WARRIOR SOUL, WINTER.. To name just a few."

"Influences: The music I love. The singers I respect: Chuck Schuldiner, John Tardy, David Vincent, Jeff Walker. They are brutal, yet clearly to understand. They never tried to sound like somebody else. These are my main goals too. People always try to draw comparisons. It's boring me."

Q: Do you play any instruments?

Angela: "I played the flute when I was a kid later on I switched to accordion for about four years Then I got into metal and a Strat plus small Marshall amp at the same time. Today I play ESP custom, left-handed. And I just started with piano lessons."

Q: How do [you] write lyrics / where do [you] find inspiration? Do [you] ever have a writer's block?

Angela: "I read a lot. This is my main source for inspiration. When I have a writer block, I dig deep into movies and poetry books. Fantastic stuff to steal from, hehe.. A thesaurus is very helpful for finding different expressions for one and the same word."

Q: How do [you] get [your] voice to sound like it sounds?

Angela: "I use my vocal cords in conjunction with my false cords. They produce this gargly, raspy sound. I do NOT use a pitchshifter or harmonizer to create my vocal sound. I do not think it is possible to create a good scream by using effects. Controlled, abdominal breathing is a necessity. Strong, flexible vocal chords and frequent training is also required, if you want to sustain your voice over long periods of touring, etc. Acid reflux and smoking are your vocal chords worst enemies. When your throat/your larynx starts to hurt, this is a bad sign. If you are on the road it's usually not possible to stop screaming for a week or two. Try not to speak in between shows to give your damaged voice a rest. Make sure you dont eat late, don't drink any alcohol and avoid spicy food. Be nice to your inflamed larynx. Living a boring life for a while is not as bad as canceling a show. I have learned that the hard way. A good introduction into screaming technique, warm-ups etc is Melissa Cross DVD 'The Zen Of Screaming'. You can order it at www. Melissacross.com."

Q: CARCASS and Michael's gear set-up:

Angela: "About CARCASS: I am afraid this is a question for Michael, really, as well as his gear set up. On www.myspace.com/michaelamott there is a detailed illustration of his effects and gear in the picture section."

Q: What is your favorite song you have done thus far with ARCH ENEMY?

Angela: "'Ravenous'."

Q: I was just wondering besides the fact that death metal in general is awesome. What was the reason for you to start listening to it? Was it a band or just the attitude?

Angela: "It was the sheer energy and aggression. I found a radio station from England that played metal. I was about 15 years old and I didnt even know that this is metal. I just knew: this sound is giving me strength. Soon I discovered there were more people out there who liked SLAYER, TESTAMENT, MORBID ANGEL. They hooked me up with lots of LPs and tapes. And with 17 I joined my first metal band."

Q: About being a vegetarian:

Angela: "I don't have a problem with carnivores as long as they are conscious about what they do and do chose the 'right' meat, which is either self-hunted or bought at an organic farm, where the animals can roam free and at least have a cruelty-free life. The problem is, most people have actually forgotten where their meat comes from. In fact, most kids don't even associate their steak or burger with a once-living creature. If everybody would think a little and act responsible, there wouldn't be a meat industry with all its evil and damage to the ecological system. It is the thoughtlessness and indifference of society that creates such terrible abuse and exploitation of animals."

Q: Your intro music for live shows: Who wrote it?

Angela: "It is from DEAD CAN DANCE 'Summoning Of The Muse'. The album is called 'Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun'."

Brand New Sin Announce Name Of New Album

New York quintet BRAND NEW SIN have returned with a voracious hard rock assault laden with soaring, captivating melodies and crushing anthems that are sure to get anyone’s blood flowing and fists pumping. This highly anticipated new offering, "Tequila", will also further establish them as one of rock’s premiere tandems. The album is set for an October 3 release.

Soon after completing a six-week nationwide tour as direct support to Black Label Society last fall, BRAND NEW SIN entered Method of Groove studios in Brooklyn with producer Joey Z (Life of Agony, Stereomud) to begin tracking "Tequila". They’ve emerged with an album sure to stand the test of time. The disc, mastered by the acclaimed George Marino (Metallica, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses) at Sterling Sound, also features a guest vocal appearance by Peter Steele (Type O Negative) on the track “Reaper Man” and is the perfect representation of what this group is ultimately capable of creating.

The group also recently recorded a new version of the entrance theme music for Big Show, the 7-foot, 500-pound ECW wrestler. The theme, "Crank It Up," was first heard on the compilation CD WWE: Wreckless Intent, which debuted at #8 on the Billboard charts.

Joe Altier (vocals) checks in with the following report:

“The album is now complete. We recorded this album live as a band, and we think it perfectly captures our raw energy. Hopefully, everyone finds the new tunes as ‘intoxicating’ as we do. We feel that a lot of bands nowadays make things sound too polished, and we have been told for years that our albums are good but our live shows are much better, so that's what we went for. Stay tuned to our website www.brandnewsin.org and our MySpace page www.myspace.com/brandnewsin for all news and tour dates. See ya soon.”

BRAND NEW SIN’s "Tequila" will prove authentic, meat-and-potatoes classic hard rock is chased with an undeniable raw fury that refuses to be denied.

Woman Sexually Assaulted At Ozzfest Show

Police in Tinley Park, Illinois, are searching for a man who sexually assaulted a 20-year-old Ozzfest attendee in a parking lot outside the festival on Sunday. The attack occurred as the woman was leaving the show at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheater at approximately 8 p.m.

According to a report on the incident from the Tinley Park Police Department, the assault happened as the woman was walking through one of the venue's parking lots. She encountered the shirtless man and they began talking. "After they engaged in conversation, he forced her to a secluded grassy area of the parking lot where the assault took place," according to the report. "The subject then released the victim and left the area in an unknown direction."

Tinley Park Police Commander Phil Valois told the Chicago Tribune that the victim who came to the concert from neighboring Indiana said she initially had no reason to be scared of the attacker.

The woman described her attacker as white, muscular, 5-foot-9, about 30-years-old with short brown hair and possibly pierced nipples. There have been no witness reports of the attack, and Valois said it was unlikely anyone saw or heard it.

The victim reported the incident to the amphitheater's staff 10 minutes after she was assaulted.

Police had no additional information at press time, according to a Tinley Park Police Department spokesperson.

An Ozzfest spokesperson could not be reached for comment.

Deicide Give Accounts From Laredo, TX Show

DEICIDE's Ralph Santolla offers up his personal statement regarding the events of July 14 in Laredo, Texas . DEICIDE are currently preparing for their fall headlining tour with JUNGLE ROT and HURTLOCKER and are set to release "The Stench of Redemption" on August 22, which is being called some of their best work since "Legion".

His account is as follows:

"We pulled up a at the hotel in Laredo around 4 o' clock in the afternoon. One of the local promoters, Liz, tells us to be downstairs at 6:30 to go to the venue. After we sit outside waiting for 45 minutes in the heat, we decided to go on our own. The first thing I see when we get there is this Liz chick sitting on her ass in their venue. I said "Hey thanks for leaving us sitting around waiting for you to pick us up". Not a great start. Things were bad from the beginning - there was no stage and tons of gear everywhere. The promoter said,'We'll set you guys up after all the other bands, right before you play.' We were like, that's not how it works, they can set up in front of us. Thats pretty normal. It took these people an hour to figure out how to move 1/2 a drum set out of our way. A bad start. We asked for 2 hours for our rider, but this Liz girl wasn't capable of giving straight answers to anything and was a lot more concerned with her local band buddies concerns than putting on a show. We should never have been booked there in the first place. Right before we go on stage, they tell us their not paying us what they agreed top in the contract. A lot of promoters who aren't experienced don't seem to understand a guarantee means just that, a guarantee. If they risk their cash to put on a show, and then they don't promote or whatever, no matter who's fault it is, they take the hit - not the bands. They never complain when they make a lot of extra cash, but they squeal like a stuck pig when they don't. This is our career and we were ripped off - you can't go into Wal Mart and just take whatever you want without paying."

"We go on stage and the power starts cutting out instantly. They didn't provide a venue, enough power, a stage, the money, or a working PA. We had to stop every 30 seconds and finally somebody says they're making us stop, so we go off stage. I went upstairs on the balcony top find my cigarettes. I'm standing there talking to the guys from Ringworm, and I turned around and a police officer pepper sprays me and throws me on the ground. They didn't say "Stop, get on the ground," nothing - just ran up to me and sprayed me. They threw me down, and I said "Why am I being arrested" and one of them says, " you threw a beer bottle at me." I replied, "ME??", and one of the other cops starts yelling " SHUT THE FU*K UP, SHUT THE FU*K UP, I SAW YOU I SAW YOU." Then one of them puts his knee into my neck and puts all of his weight on it and starts grinding my face into the ground. Now, the thing is, this whole time, I'm just laying there being still. I can't see, I can't breathe - nothing. So it's not like I was struggling or resisting. If you've never been pepper sprayed, it fu*king hurts. Now my hand is all fu*ked up and i've got a loose tooth. Jack Owen told me the next day that he saw somebody in the crowd throw a beer up in the air. It bounced off off something and hit the ground near the cop and then all the cops went running up the stairs. That's it. I've done a lot of stupid things, but throwing bottles at cops isn't one of them."

Feast Eternal Sign To Open Grave Records

Open Grave Records has announced the latest addition to their roster, Feast Eternal.

Feast Eternal started out in the winter of 1992 with John Greenman (ex-Infested) and T.J. Humlinski (ex-Infested). Late in October of 1993 the lineup was completed by the addition of drummer, Matt Skrzypczak.

"Prisons of Flesh" was met with critical acclaim and produced a loyal fan base, even leading them to receive attention from a major metal record label. Fast forward to June 2006. The remaining members of Feast Eternal (T.J. & Matt) make their presence known again within the scene and begin writing material for a new Feast Eternal album. In a short time Open Grave Records took interest in working with Feast Eternal and in mid-July 2006 the relationship was solitified.

In late 2006 the original, "Prisons of Flesh" album will be reissued in it's original form and will include two new tracks as a bonus to tie fans over for the full length return of Feast Eternal in early 2007.
