The Hurt Process On The Verge of Break-up

The future of The Hurt Process is apparently in doubt, as the band has cancelled all upcoming shows and tours. Vocalist Ivan Ferreira has issued the following statement:

"We have cancelled all shows and tours for now. The future of this band is uncertain. I am probably the last guy in the band who should tell you this but seeing as I've been dealing with most of the things on here why not. We have worked our butts off for the last 8 months, shit man I am still struggling with a back injury gained on the Silent Drive tour in April. It was a great time and as cheesy as it may sound I will most certainly cherish every moment of it. For an South African kid it was a pretty fucking big deal.

I am afraid The Hurt process now reached the creepy old crossroads, I am not sure what's going to happen or if you guys will see this band live ever again...but for now I am afraid it's curtains close.

I just want to thank Jenny and Simon from Victory Records, all the promoters for endless nights of msn, Rob and the boys who worked really hard on the myspace sites (Rob you are killer man), Marco from Avocado, the Silent Drive and Bane boys and you guys for supporting us."

Interview

Interview With Eric Pottle Of Ekotren

Cape Coral, Florida's unsigned dynamo, Ekotren, unleashed a firebrand performance on June 25, 2006 at the latest installment of the venerable Vans Warped Tour in Orlando Florida, clearly provideing the harshest of musical critics with all the proof they need to assess that this is a group of young musicians who are now clearly on their way to making a breakthrough in a metal genre that has seen it all before. Well, almost everything. They haven’t seen Ekotren.

“I dont know if fame and fortune is where we are going. If it comes, it comes. Both of those are not things that drive us. We are shooting for success, and if those come, then they come. But I don’t see them affecting us or our music. We live music and there is truly nothing I see getting in the way of us doing what we do,” offers Ekotren’s lead guitarist, Keith Finnell.

Now, that’s some true Rock N Roll spirit.

Initially founded in the Fall of 2000, Ekotren are passionate young artists that strive to put out a positive life message through their freshly offered hook-laden, melody driven songs. After having the usual band member shuffle occur, the band consists now of its most potent lineup to date with guitarist Keith Finnell, bassist Sean Fiene, Eric Pottle on drums, DJ/keyboardist Steve Chin and vocalist John Sheldon.

And while they certainly shoot more into the realm of Linkin Park's all out pop metal approach at times, this is a heavy music band that certainly offers its fair share of deep, brutal themes and a maturity level well beyond its years.

From the recent metalunderground.com review of their debut EP “The Tables Have Turned”:

"The Tables Have Turned," an independently released debut album from Cape Coral, Florida’s Ekotren is flat out one of metal music’s most original and fresh sounding recording’s for 2006. In a year that has seen the once darker themed Korn lose all its edge and every old thrash or speed metal group from the 80-90’s dusted off and put back on the road and into the studio for more of nothing new, Ekotren has thrown its hat into the ring with a simply smashing collection of seven radio-friendly but extremely, provocative-themed songs.”

No one can deny that the stage is set for Ekotren to take it to the next level.

I got some Q&A in recently with their drummer, Eric Pottle.

Man Gets 25 Years For Stabbing At CoC Show

Colleen Jenkins of the St. Petersburg Times has issued the following report:

If Michael Pyne had fought with his fists instead of a knife the night of June 23, 2005, he likely would have made a friend once the chaotic brawl at Ybor City's Masquerade nightclub ended.

Tommy Laskas had a way of winning people over, said his sister, Jaimie Mourer. "'Hey guy, no hard feelings,'" Mourer imagined Laskas would have said. He "probably would have handed you a beer."

Instead, Mourer spoke in place of her younger brother Monday (July 24). Then she and her family and his friends watched as the man who used a knife was sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing Laskas.

It was not the ending anyone had imagined for 29-year-old Laskas, a Gaither High School graduate who lived in Seminole Heights but knew Ybor City as the place where he spread his artistic wings, met and married his muse.

A familiar face to even the homeless people who roamed the area's streets, Laskas went to Masquerade to hear the band CORROSION OF CONFORMITY.

His wife, Wendy Laskas, and a friend accidentally knocked Pyne, a stranger, into a mosh pit during the concert.

They seem to part cordially — Pyne even handed them a business card — but ended up in a brawl about 20 minutes later.

Wendy Laskas and two others were hurt. Tommy Laskas died. The business card helped police nab Pyne.

To avoid a life sentence, the Pinellas Park man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and several counts of aggravated battery and assault.

He will serve 10 years of probation once his prison term ends.

Chaoswave To Record New Promo Cd

Italian metallers CHAOSWAVE will enter the studio on August 11 to record three new songs for a promotional CD, to be used to procure a record deal for the band's second full-length album. According to a posting on the group's web site, "The new material can best be described as CHAOSWAVE x 10. More melody, more speed, more brutality. A lot of double bass, a few blast beasts here and there, more aggressive vocals, more melodic vocals, more solos. In short terms, a bit more of everything you found on the debut." The songs set to be recorded are "Picture Perfect", "The Evident" and "Two Shadows Cast". The band will be performing one or two of these tracks on their upcoming tour in September. Interested labels wishing to obtain a copy of the new CD can contact the band at henrik@chaoswave.it.

Megadeth Bassist To Tour With Strapping Young Lad

Devin Townsend's (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND) label, Hevy Devy Records, has issued the following update:

"STRAPPING YOUNG LAD's 'The New Black' was released July 11th or 17th, depending on where you live. So you should all have it by now, and if you don't… 'You Suck' …. has been available to hear for a while on the HDR, Century Media websites and SYL's MySpace site. The video for 'Wrong Side' can also be seen on those sites as well as an awesome clip of 'The New Black' from the Download Festival in England. 'The New Black' U.S. standard edition comes with an enhanced CD and Century Media sampler disc. There is also a digipack version that comes with one new bonus track, 'The Long Pig', and the MELVINS' cover 'Zodiac'.

"There has been a lot of discussion in the past while as to the future of STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and Devin's views on the band and his career. There was a particular interview Devin did which was translated and reprinted on the Internet that raised alarm. In it, Devin was admittedly negative and candid with his thoughts on everything from the industry to metal music in general."

Commented Devin: "I was really tired, I warned people that it probably wasn't a good idea… there were too many interviews and I just wasn't in the head space for it." Despite this, he was scheduled for 33 hours of interviews over 3 days.

Continued Devin: "That interview makes it sound a lot more dire than it actually is. I was just exhausted. I just don't want to HAVE to do STRAPPING ALL THE TIME. I want the energy to be pure but it's a small aspect of my personality and it can't be pure if it's forced. I could go on doing heavy music forever, but only if allowed to do it when it comes naturally."

"So SYL will continue only when Devin feels it, not when demanded.

"After Ozzfest, Devin is taking six months off where he will focus on things other than music. His first child is due in October and he wants to spend time with his family and assess what he would like to do in the future. Beginning in March, there will be three more tours in support of 'The New Black', likely in Europe, Australia/Japan and again in the U.S./Canada. He then wants to experiment with varying musical styles and do something away from THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND and STRAPPING YOUNG LAD for his next project. He would also like to get further into production, ultimately setting up a facility in Vancouver where he can house and produce bands on one site. He would like to feel free to do music without feeling forced to live in the 'scene' that he doesn't relate to well.

"There are a few things we must also bear in mind. The first being that we all know that Devin thinks in extremes and in the immediate, otherwise the THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND/STRAPPING YOUNG LAD dichotomy would not be possible. He speaks his mind freely but how he may be feeling at one moment may be entirely different from the next. Also, like his lyrics, a lot of what he says is layered in sarcasm so you cannot always accept it as 'truth.' For now, just give him some time off and he may come back with an entirely new outlook.

"The Ozzfest tour continues with great success. It has been a very surreal experience for the band. While it can be difficult going out and screaming 'You Suck' at 10 in the morning, the response from the crowd as well as the signing sessions and greetings with people afterwards have made it really rewarding.

"As with the Sounds Of The Underground last year, Byron (Stroud) unfortunately ended up double-booked with FEAR FACTORY so after August 1st there will be a substitute bass player for all of the remaining STRAPPING dates. At this time it is confirmed to be James MacDonough, formerly with MEGADETH."

Disturbed Planning Next Music As A Weapon Tour

Launch Radio Networks reports: DISTURBED has no intention of coming off the road once Ozzfest ends next month. Drummer Mike Wengren told Launch that the Chicago-based band is already planning its third Music As A Weapon tour for sometime this fall. "After Ozzfest we're supposed to go over to Europe, and then when we come back, we're hoping to put together Music As A Weapon," he said. "I don't have any confirmed dates, but we're hoping that's gonna come out, you know, November-ish through, say, February of '07, you know. It's gonna be a nice, long run."

Previous Music As A Weapon tours have featured bands like CHEVELLE, TAPROOT and DROWNING POOL in addition to the headliners.

Drowning Pool Set To Head Back Into Studio

Dallas, Texas-based band DROWNING POOL has posted the following message on its official web site:

"Well, our tour is over, and god was it amazing. We got an unreal response from the crowds. Thanks to everyone who came out and partied with us. We will see you again soon.

"So what's next for DROWNING POOL? Well, we have a lot of new material written so it's time to hammer out the kinks and head into the studio to finish this baby and get it on the shelves, so look forward to that as the next step from DROWNING POOL."

DROWNING POOL recently parted ways with Wind-Up Records after releasing two albums through the label, each featuring a different lead singer: 2001's "Sinner" and 2004's "Desensitized".

DROWNING POOL's original vocalist, Dave Williams, was found dead on the band's tour bus in August of 2002 while the group was on the road with that summer's Ozzfest. An autopsy revealed that Williams died from cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle disease for which he was never diagnosed. His successor, Jason "Gong" Jones, lasted less than two years before he left the band and was replaced by former SOIL frontman Ryan McCombs.

Interview

Interview With Mike Sweigart Of Level-Zero

Los Angeles based metal band LEVEL-ZERO have been taking their own form of hardcore and melodic music to the diehard fans of the underground metal scene since making their debut in 2000. They have one main philosophy to the way they approach their audience: "We want to blow you away onstage," says vocalist Mike Sweigart. "Of the people, by the people, and for the people, we are!" Blending the lyrical and sonic genius of the Deftones with Dry Kill Logic's crushing, heavy hammer-driven sound, this critically lauded act is rounded out with bandmates, guitarist Keith Covert, bassist Todd Arostegui and drummer Jesse Billson. I am more impressed by the seemingly endless supply of band unity that is going on with this group, and I consider it an honor to have conducted this interview with their world class singer, Mike Sweigart. Deranged Begin Work On New Album

Swedish gore death masters DERANGED have commenced work on the follow-up to their sixth full-length album, "Obscenities in B Flat", which was released earlier this year on Listenable Records.

Commented drummer Rikard Wermen: "We have a couple of new songs more or less all done and so many ideas so it won't be any problem to throw some more tracks together. It's to early to say when we will eventually record the new disc. However, it will be titled '213' and a couple of titles that will hopefully and most likely end up on the disc are 'Death Walks on High Heels', 'Strip Nude for your Killer', 'Watch Me When I Kill', 'Too Young Too Die', 'The Killer Wore Black Gloves', 'So Sweet So Dead' and 'The Red Light Murderess'.

"And yes, it is the best musical work we have so far accomplished under the name DERANGED. It's brutal and insane, and will hopefully leave you dead with a broken neck in the pit."

Evergrey Part Ways With Bassist

Swedish metallers EVERGREY have parted ways with bassist Michael Håkansson. Replacing him in the group's lineup is former HAMMERFALL bassist Fredrik Larsson. Michael's official statement on the matter reads as follows:

"After a long time of consideration and many, many hours of thinking I now, with sadness, announce my departure from the band.

"I have been a part of the band for seven years and during that time I have experienced so much and I have seen more than I ever thought I would. But now it is time for me to say goodbye.

"My reason for doing this is that I feel a strong urge to do something different in music. This is the one and only reason and it's 100% my own decision.

"I want to thank the boys for all the good times we have had together thoughout the years. I wish them the best of all success, something they truly deserve and without doubt will achieve." More...

Interview With Children of Bodom Bassist

Shehzaad Jiwani of ChartAttack.com recently conducted an interview with CHILDREN OF BODOM bassist Henkka Seppälä. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

On opening for SLAYER on this summer's Unholy Alliance tour:

"When we heard we were able to go open for SLAYER, it was like a dream come true. When we saw the billing, with LAMB OF GOD and MASTODON, we were like, 'What the fuck?' This is the best tour this year, probably. It's been even better than we thought, with a lot of people, and everybody in the crew in the touring party is really cool."

On having to work to win over new fans:

"I think it's very interesting. It helps get things more interesting, and it would be boring if you're always headlining, headlining, headlining. It's fun to go and get back in a good way to play in front of people who have never heard of you. It's a challenge. On this tour, since most of the people haven't really heard about us in most areas, when we get on stage it's kind of like we have to show the people what we are. Instead of just playing the hit songs, it's more showing them what CHILDREN OF BODOM are all about."

On the group's current setlist:

"We basically just tried to make the set that would present CHILDREN OF BODOM as all the different styles and things that we have. We have a fast track, we have a slow track, we have everything. We tried to play songs off each album, but we only have eight songs to play. Most nights, there's so many people that have never heard of us, so we tried to present them something so that they could get an idea of how CHILDREN OF BODOM really is."

On the prospects of his group's genre

"It's great to see how big metal can be nowadays and still be true to itself. Take a look at LAMB OF GOD, who sell 250,000 albums or whatever. That's a lot of records. But when you go to see them live, they're fucking metal and they're fucking brutal. That's one of the things that makes me really happy about modern metal. It makes me happy that you can be really big even though you're still doing real metal, and with no compromises."

Overkill To Headline Second Stage At Gigantour

OVERKILL's official web site has been updated with the following message:

"Well, it's been rumored for a while but now we can confirm that OVERKILL will be headlining the second stage on the upcoming Gigantour starting Sept. 7th. DD [bass] and Blitz [vocals] met with Dave Mustaine [MEGADETH mainman and Gigantour mastermind] last summer while on tour in California and spoke about being part of the tour, and over the last few months were able to put it all together. Says DD, 'It's not many tours that would take out an old-school thrash band, so we are really psyched to get out there!'

"In other news, the new OVERKILL album is just about complete. The band were planning to be in the studio in late August, but will move it to after the Gigantour to start recording, so you may hear some songs on this run. OVERKILL will be doing headlining shows on the off days of this tour as well so keep checking here for updates."

The clip can also be seen a BILLBOARD.com under "New Hard Rock", go to this link and search for Agnostic Front. Too hard, too strong!!
