Is Hardcore Music Associated With Violence?

Jason Abbruzzese of Sentinel & Enterprise reports that the brawl that erupted last week after a hardcore punk-rock show at a church in Leominster, Massachusetts reportedly began as a fight in the mosh pit in front of the stage, where the band CUT THROAT was playing.

One of many?

The fight, which resulted in three arrests, is just another example in a long line of altercations at these types of concerts, according to Justin Prokowiew, 19, of Shirley, who said he and friends attended the show on August 12.

"I hear a lot of that kind of stuff happens at the shows," said Prokowiew, who also works at a local Newbury Comics. "[At] local shows, a lot of fights break out. It's pretty much just local kids getting into fights with other local kids they know. No strangers are doing it."

Other local area youths say that moshing is a big part of the local music scene for teenagers.

Shane Caron, 15, of Fitchburg said he feels that 15- to 20-year-olds tend to do the most moshing.

"That's like the major age range for moshing," said Caron, who said he mostly listens to punk and heavy metal. "It's usually just the atmosphere — mosh pits everywhere."

New genres of rock have emerged with similar qualities to predecessors of metal and punk but with an extreme edge.

One of the most recognized movements, punk-rock music known as "hardcore," is closely associated with violence.

Michelle Shaughnessy, 18, of Fitchburg, said the most intense violence can usually be found at hardcore shows.

"At real hardcore shows there's a lot of fights," said Shaughnessy.

She said she has see her fair share of mosh pit injuries, including being hit in the head with a bottle at last year's Locobazooka concert at the Fitchburg Municipal Airport. "People get messed up."

Mastodon Talks About "Blood Mountain" Leak

Mastodon's drummer, Brann Dailor, has told MTV.com that a certain English journalist is the one behind the online leak of the Atlanta metallers' forthcoming album, "Blood Mountain", last week.

"Hopefully one day, he'll introduce himself," Dailor joked about the journalist, who claimed he was one of the band's biggest fans. "[Our record label] traced it back to the guy who did it, and he got fired from wherever he was working. It's just so stupid. And it's such a sh---y copy. It sounds like sh--. I'm not concerned with record sales, because I think that if anyone's looking for it online to download it and listen to it, when it comes out [on September 12], they'll buy it anyways. They're fans.

"My problem is, I can equate it to when I was 11 years old," he continued, relaying a story about discovering his Christmas presents in his mother's closet a month before the holiday. "I wrapped it all back up, and then Christmas came, and I went downstairs, and I knew everything I was going to get. And that sucked. It totally ruined the whole thing. Up until then, I had never done that before and I was always really excited to wake up and open that first present. But that wasn't awesome, and I never did it again.

"When I was a kid, you had to wait for that Iron Maiden record," he recalled. "The whole thing was, this is the day it comes out, and you cannot have it before that day. But these days, with the Internet, everything just leaks. I urge people not to download it if they see it there, but I understand if they do. I want people to be excited for it and to hear it for the first time and hear it the way it was supposed to be heard."

Mastodon last week shot two videos within five days, with director Jonathan Rej (FURTHER SEEMS FOREVER, STRETCH ARMSTRONG), who worked with the band on the video for "Blood and Thunder" from 2004's "Leviathan".

Vayne Theories Makes 1,000th Post

As of this post, I have posted 1000 news stories to Metalunderground.com. Formerly known as Negatyve One on here, I've been a site member for nearly three years and a contributor for just over a year. In that time I've learned alot about the metal scene myself, and hopefully have helped passer-bys and regular readers to keep up on their favorite bands' news and expand their metal interests.

In my time working on Metalunderground.com, I've strived to get news straight from the sources and break big news stories. I've recently resumed writing the weekly column "This Week In Metal," which helps readers find out which bands are doing well in the scene. A column that comes straight from the sources of metal, hopefully it will allow the readers to learn what bands are breaking the scene and how well their favorite bands are doing.

I hope to continue bringing metal news to the masses. There is alot of work behind the scenes of the site that alot of people don't understand, but it is a job that I take very seriously. I hope to see TWIM continue to grow, finally break the scene and do my own interviews, including a plan I have to video record them and get them posted here on metalunderground.com where the readers will be able to see me sitting with the bands and hopefully learn alot more about the people behind the music this way. Also I've been working on ideas with good friend and site owner Deathbringer to make the site more user friendly, adding alot of personal features for the readers to increase the enjoyment and experience here at the site. Here is a link to my very first post, and with 1,000 down now hopefully there is many more to come.

Headbangers to Protest Mainstream Media Perception

The Hessian Studies Society has issued a press release in protest of the mainstream media's coverage of heavy metal:

Money rules our society, and determines what gets into the news, which is why metalheads across America are objecting to a recent spate of articles attempting to dominate their culture with status quo norms.

"I opened CNN.com and thought, 'Why aren't they letting us speak for ourselves'?" said Houston metalhead Steve Craig of the article 'Metal gets a makeover: Bands focus on politics instead of parties.' Craig, who plays in Houston metal band Bahimiron, said he felt that metal culture existed independently of the mainstream media, and was now being "normed" by the article.

"They're trying to make it like everything else," he said. "Accept the same way of thinking, which is that humanism and materialism are the only way to live. That's not true. If we believed that, we would be in punk or rock bands instead."

The Hessian Studies Society, a not-for-profit cultural education apparat dedicated to preserving and promoting the culture of "underground metal," or heavy metal music produced outside the handful of companies that control major record labels and news media, has intervened and is organizing protests worlwide.

In their article, "Underground Metal Disagrees With Mainstream Political Trend," the Hessian Studies Society points out that metalheads have always had political beliefs, and they have never needed a makeover. Moreover, this "makeover" involves bringing those political beliefs more into line with accepted norms instead of appreciating them for their unique and insightful view of Western culture.

The article, which can be viewed online at Hessian.org, lambasts the media for making news into a product and denying the veracity of the unique and vital subculture of underground heavy metal.

CA Metal Band Wins Bodog Contest, Gets Ripped Off

Laura McCutcheon of California's Ukiah Daily Journal reports that Ukiah, CA-based metal band DEFINITION UNKNOWN (MySpace) won round one in a national contest, but band members lost something near and dear to them in the process: their equipment.

About the same time the announcer of "Boot Camp" — also known as round one of the Bodog Battle of the Bands, held earlier this month at the 12 Galaxies in San Francisco — informed the group they'd won first place, their van, parked around the corner with $10,000 worth of musical equipment inside, was stolen, drummer Tommy Shannon said. Slayer's Tom Araya Expecting 'Jihad Backlash'

One of the big tracks on SLAYER's new album, "Christ Illusion", entitled "Jihad", is written from a perspective of a 9/11 terrorist. Asked in an interview with The Sun if this has caused any problems, vocalist/bassist Tom Araya responded, "The record has just come out in the States so we haven't had to deal with it much. But I know it's coming."

SLAYER's 1986 classic, "Reign in Blood", is seen as the benchmark for new metal and the best pure heavy metal album of all time.

It was the most extreme record of its period, with a three-pronged attack of heaviness, speed and controversial subject matter.

Tom says: "'Christ Illusion' comes close, but, in my opinion, nothing can surpass 'Reign in Blood' for intensity and impact. No one had heard anything like it before. In the 20 years since then, people have got more desensitised. What was over the top then, might not be now."

Tom says the reason the band have remained tight, hungry and aggressive over the years is because they've never followed any trends.

He says: "The fact we started out playing what we liked is behind our success and we have never adjusted to what is popular. It's just been, 'Plug in, turn it up, let's go."

Max And Igor Cavelera On Stage Together Again

SOULFLY's official web site was updated with the following message:

"The 10th annual D-Low Memorial show is over and we thank you all for making it a huge success. The show, which was opened by NORTH SIDE KINGS and INCITE, sold out and it was a very historic night for SOULFLY. The band was joined on stage by many friends from their past including Danny Marianinho of NORTH SIDE KINGS (on 'Defeat U'), Richie Cavalera of INCITE (on 'Bleed' and 'Stay Strong'), [former MEGADETH bassist] Dave Ellefson (on 'Prophecy' and 'Defeat U'), and their former longtime drummer Roy Mayorga (on 'No Hope = No Fear') who currently plays with STONE SOUR. But most importantly, Max was reunited onstage for the first time in 10 years with his brother Igor Cavalera. Max and Igor formed SEPULTURA together in the early 1980s, but have not played together since the band split in 1996. Igor joined the band mid-way through the set for a jam on the drums and stayed onstage to play the SEPULTURA classics 'Roots Bloody Roots' and 'Attitude' with the guys!"

SOULFLY bassist Bobby Burns previously told BLABBERMOUTH.NET: "The show was fuckin' insane! Roy Mayorga came out and did 'No Hope = No Fear' with us. Dave Ellefson did 'Prophecy' and 'Defeat U'. And the one and only Igor Cavalera came out and did 'Attitude' and 'Roots' with us!!! It was far beyond badass, trust me... Best D-Low show yet..."

Also, SOULFLY have been confirmed as the direct support for MEGADETH on the upcoming Australian leg of the Gigantour. ARCH ENEMY and CALIBAN will also be playing before SOULFLY, and tickets go on sale on Tuesday (August 22) at 9:00 a.m." The dates for the shows are:

Oct. 21 - Brisbane, Australia - The Riverstage
Oct. 22 - Sydney, Australia - Hordern Pavilion
Oct. 24 - Melbourne, Australia - Festival Hall

Psychologist Worried About Chain Reaction Suicides

DISSECTION frontman Jon Nödtveidt's suicide could have a profound effect on his fans, says psychologist Lisa Ineland in an interview in the Swedish newspaper Expressen.

"Research shows that these incidents have a copycat effect even if it's not a famous person who commits suicide," she says. "But obviously the impact is greater if the act is committed by a role model. That was apparent when Kurt Cobain killed himself."

The black metal culture often revolves around death and suicide and as a faithful Satanist Jon Nödtveidt often spoke in positive terms about suicide. According to Lisa Ineland, his suicide doesn't have to be related to Satanism or black metal.

"I believe there's a severe, underlying depression behind it. It's not rational behavior to do something like this. Very few people take their own lives because of their conviction. That type of act is not part of our culture. This is about him not getting the help he needed."

Concerned parents should make it a point to talk to their children.

"You could ask them, 'How do you [view Jon's suicide]?' and ask if they're discussing it with their friends," says Ineland. "You should try to be a part of your child's reality. You should always try to be a present role model and talk to your children about important and existential issues, what life is all about and how important children are."

The Swedish writer Mattias Pettersson is working on a book about the influence of Satanism in black metal and was preparing an interview with Jon Nödtveidt.

"I wanted to talk to him because he was unique in the genre," says Pettersson. "He was for real and really lived that way he taught. I think most people in black metal are just regular hard rockers to whom religion is not that important. It's easy to write a cliché lyric about murder and death, but if you read Jon's lyrics you notice that he became more and more serious."

Pettersson thinks it's tragic that Jon took his own life.

"He was a huge talent. For an outsider it might be difficult to come to terms with what has happened, but to me personally it was expected."

The Darkness Refute Rumors About Being Dropped

THE DARKNESS have, in fact, not been dropped by their US label, Atlantic Records, after only two albums. Despite their 2005 effort, "One Way Ticket To Hell...And Back," failing to garner the same success as their debut "Permission To Land," which went gold in the States and double-platinum in the UK, the band are looking to release their third album in early 2007.

A message from the band regarding frontman Justin Hawkins entering rehab reads as follows:

"After Justin saw a doctor last week and was recommended to “cancel all professional commitments or work-related activities”, we had little choice but to cancel the band’s appearance at the Skanderborg Festival in Denmark, something that the band hate to do, but having been out on the road constantly for such a long time and having not had any time off over the past three years, that’s what Justin has decided to do and we are all agreed that his health must come first."

"As everybody found out today, Justin has been admitted to a rehabilitation clinic. We would however like to make it clear that this emphatically does not signal the end for The Darkness, nor are their label Atlantic Records considering ‘dropping’ them. On the contrary they have taken up their option with the band and are looking forward to releasing The Darkness' third album in early 2007."

"We are not here to comment on Justin’s private life – or anyone else’s for that matter – but he is feeling better already and as soon as he is ready we will be going straight into the studio to begin recording album number 3."

"We hope you would join us in wishing Justin well – and it is for you to judge if a platinum album, headlining and co-headlining sold out shows across the UK, Continental Europe and Australia, etc. to an audience of tens of thousands of adoring fans can ever be considered a failure!"

Following Zayra were three consecutive poor performances, delivered, surprisingly, by some of the better vocalists of the remaining contenders. Magni lost the worldwide audience’s admiration with a boring rendition of David Bowie’s “Star Man,” Patrice was criticized across the board for her rather pathetic attempt at the Police’s “Message in a Bottle,” and Storm delivered an absolute abomination with her version of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.” Navarro’s reaction to Storm’s performance: “I hated that.” More...
