Terrorizer Frontman Comments On Napalm Death Split

TERRORIZER guitarist Jesse Pintado recently spoke to Rockdetector.com's Welsh interviewer Anthony Morgan. Topics of discussion included the group's recent reformation, the recording of their upcoming album "Darker Days Ahead", the uncertain future of side-project LOCKUP and the circumstances surrounding Pintado's departure from NAPALM DEATH after 15 years of service. Several excerpts from the interview follow:

Rockdetector: What were your motives in resurrecting TERRORIZER?

Jesse Pintado: "Basically, we've always spoken about it, and jammed even. We went to Florida and rehearsed some music. Enough material had been compiled for a full-length record, and we enjoyed playing the songs. So we decided 'Why not? Let's do a record.'"

Rockdetector: How would you compare the new songs to the old songs from years back?

Jesse Pintado: "I think they're in the same vein. If anything, they're more brutal though — I think it's way faster, the guitars are downtuned, it's heavier and it's got a different feel."

Rockdetector: Why was "Dead Shall Rise" re-recorded?

Jesse Pintado: "When we were rehearsing I brought out my demo tapes just to listen to. The original version had a 32-bar blast in the chorus line, but when we listened to the album version, it had a skank beat. This was slower, like 'da na da na da na,' yet the demo take had blast, like 'daaa naa da naa (aggressive).' We started rehearsing the track, so I thought 'Hey we should do it.' That's really the original way."

Rockdetector: Could you talk me through your final days in NAPALM DEATH?

Jesse Pintado: "The departure was basically due to a variety of reasons. We shared a house together, we toured together, we were always together, but people move on. Along the way there was a little rough bumps, though I don't know. In my situation it got to the point where I needed a little fresh start. I'm still good friends with the guys; there's no animosity there, we're all cool, and they're happy with what I'm doing."

Rockdetector: Did the media twist the situation in some ways? The media reported that the band stated you had personal problems and alcohol issues, so did they manipulate the facts?

Jesse Pintado: "Yeah, of course. The other day I was browsing the Internet, and they stated I was dead! I thought 'Oh shit, I'm dead!' I really don't pay much attention to that."

Rockdetector: Did you do any soul searching after you left NAPALM DEATH, because you'd been in the group for well over a decade?

Jesse Pintado: "Hmm no, basically I lived in England for such a long time. In a crazy way I moved to Holland, and from there I was working on TERRORIZER. I wanted to visit California so I could spend time with my family, because my parents are quite old. Also, I heard some bad news about my grandma, so..."

Rockdetector: In a few years to come and if the timing was right, would you consider rejoining NAPALM DEATH if asked?

Jesse Pintado: "I don't know. If the timing was right, maybe, but I don't think that'll come. I can't foretell the future though, but we'll see."

Rockdetector: Do you regret the way things turned out with your former bandmates?

Jesse Pintado: "No, not at all. Like I said, we're still mates and we keep in touch. I don't regret one bit."

Fans Injured At Tool Show

The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that at least 15 people were injured when thousands of fans surged forward during TOOL's Street Scene 2006 performance in the parking lot of San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium. The report is as follows:

More than a dozen concertgoers were sent to area hospitals last night after a crowd disturbance at Street Scene 2006, a large music festival held in the parking lot of Qualcomm Stadium.

The melee happened during the headlining performance by Los Angeles rock band Tool.

There were few details on the incident, but witnesses reported seeing a stream of fans being carried out on stretchers.

“We've had quite a few injuries,” said San Diego fire Battalion Chief Chris Brainard, shortly before midnight. “We have probably 15 patients transferred to area hospitals and we're still making determinations on (the condition of) others.”

Brainard attributed the injuries to the thousands of fans packed near the front of Street Scene's Zaranda Stage, where Tool began its performance at 10:36 last night.

The crush of fans grew so great that midway through the band's second song, lead singer Maynard James Keenan stopped singing and said: “Step back so you don't get trampled. It's just rock.”

Keenan repeatedly implored the crowd to step back, even before a uniformed city official conferred with him on stage.

“If you all take a few steps back we can keep playing,” Keenan told the audience at 10:52. The crowd moved back.
A few minutes later, Keenan said: “Look out for your brothers and sisters. No one has to die in rock 'n' roll.”

He and his band then played on, concluding their performance at midnight.

Last night was not the first time that excited Street Scene fans have been hurt. In 2004, a Friday night show featuring the band AFI drew such a large crowd that a metal barrier near the front of the stage collapsed.

Throwdown Record A Pair Of Cover Songs

Throwdown recently recorded two cover songs with producer Mudrock (Godsmack, Avenged Sevenfold), one of which will appear on the upcoming Trustkill Records compilation release, due out later this year. On working with Mudrock, Throwdown guitarist Matt Mentley states, "I've known Mudrock for awhile, we met through a mutual friend, and I have always wanted to work with him. The whole experience was amazing, because he had such great ideas, and was able to make the songs sound like Throwdown even though they were covers." The first of the two songs is a cover of the Misfits song "London Dungon," and the second is a cover of Crowbar's "Planets Collide." Commenting on the song choices, Mentley says, "The whole band is a huge fan of Crowbar, and this song especially is a slower with a melody, different from what we normally do, which is what we were aiming for. The Misfits cover was just for fun, an obvious choice and again a band favorite."

Fireball Ministry Frontman To "Marry" Bam Margera

Today's Philadelphia Inquirer reports that when skateboard star and MTV personality Bam Margera marries his fiancee Missy Rothstein this winter, the ceremony will be conducted by FIREBALL MINISTRY front man James A. Rota. An ordained minister, Rota is a longtime friend of Margera; his band was hand-picked by Margera to appear on his "Viva La Bands" compilation last year, as well as a corresponding tour. On Margera's Sirius Satellite Radio program, Radio Bam, last week, Rothstein said that the wedding will take place on a Du Pont estate in Delaware before at least 500 guests.

FIREBALL MINISTRY -- who in recent months have toured alongside such heavyweights of rock and metal as Disturbed, H.I.M., Opeth, Nevermore, Clutch and CKY -- will return to the road this weekend in support of Alice Cooper.

Dillinger Escape Plan Explain Missed Shows

THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN have posted the following update:

"Because there have been numerous people wondering what the fuck is going on, and because we haven't said anything yet, I feel as though we need to address what people who have been to the last two shows already know. Ben Weinman had to fly home the morning of August 4th to deal with some personal issues, and could not play the final four shows of this tour. Ben has played through injuries too numerous to count, and severe enough that most people wouldn't have even gotten out of bed, let alone play intense and physically demanding shows. He has played through sickness and ignored family emergencies to never ever miss a show, so when he tells me that he has to go home I know that he has to go home. So just a heads up, tonight and tomorrow night, he will not be there, but in the word's of Chris Farley in Billy Madison, "you can imagine what it would be like if he were." Except Farley was talking about banging Billy Madison's hot teacher and we're talking about a dude running around onstage like a pissed off rabid chimpanzee."
