Catching Up On Rock Star: Supernova
Following the success of last season’s Rock Star: INXS, CBS has raised the stakes for this summer’s rock band tryout show, giving contestants the opportunity to front the likes of Gilby Clarke, Jason Newsted, and Tommy Lee in the supergroup Supernova. Beginning with what audiences were told were fifteen of the world’s best unsigned vocalists, Supernova, with the help of a worldwide audience, have cut the field of rocker hopefuls down to eight, including the surprising cut of two contestants on the Wednesday show.
While there’s no doubting the success and overwhelming gossip factor that this season’s Rock Star has achieved, metalheads worldwide have been left scratching their heads, wondering how some former heavyweights of the industry—we are talking Guns n’ Roses, Mötley Crüe, and Metallica—have been reduced to complementing a bunch of karaoke-quality singers following mediocre vocal performances. This week was no exception, with some grade-A butcher jobs of songs like Stone Temple Pilot’s “Interstate Love Song” and John Lennon’s “Instant Karma.” It’s of little solace that the song selection for the show has been less metal than an episode of T.R.L. on MTV, but this is a network television show. Still, is it too much to ask for more hard riffs and less phoniness? More...
P.O.D. Part With Atlantic Records
P.O.D. have parted ways with Atlantic Records according to the Rumor Mill at Hits Daily Double. The band has released the following statement regarding the departure:
"We've been proud to be Atlantic recording artists, but it’s not the same place anymore. For most of our stay, we were blessed by a staff that was gracious towards their vision, faith, and love of music... It's time to dream again with a new staff and we leave with grateful hearts."
Grimfist Announce New Members
Norway's GRIMFIST has issued the following update:
"As many of you know, Frediablo sent out a statement a couple of weeks ago, about how fed up he is with being in a metal band, the genre and all that goes with it. Since we were already booked to do the Hole In The Sky festival and the Eternal Anger tour, he would do that and end it after the tour. We felt there was no point doing the gigs with him since he's not dedicated to the genre anymore, and have therefore recruited another excellent vocalist. We'll still remain as good friends and best of luck to Fred in the future, hopefully he'll find his path.
"The new guy joining us is Tommy Hjelm (INSENSE) and is a very dedicated and professional guy. He can basically do all kinds of vocal styles within metal. Note: We will not go out and say this is the new permanent vocalist, for now we will do the festival and the tour. If it works out killer, we'll take it from there. On bass, we'll be joined by Dreggen (DEATHCON, AETERNUS) a very talented guy totally dedicated to heavy music.
"A couple of weeks ago we all met in Oslo for a weekend of rehearsal. I can say this, the band worked really well together, and sounded fucking massive. We got to record the whole setlist and just now I got MP3s with Tommy doing his vocals on it. I'm really fucking impressed!! More...
Blood Tsunami To Records New Album Soon
BLOOD TSUNAMI, the Oslo, Norway-based thrash metal band featuring drummer Bård G. Eithun (a.k.a. Faust; SCUM, ABORYM, ex-EMPEROR), has signed a three-album deal with Nocturnal Art Productions/Candlelight Records. The group will enter Lion Heart Studios in Oslo in September with engineer Øivind Voldmo Larsen to begin recording its debut album, tentatively titled "Thrash Metal", for a February/March 2007 release. According to a press release, the album's artwork 'will be over-the-top fantastic and the man going nuts on the canvas is Alex Horley Orlandelli, who is also known for his great drawings for Marvel comics, Heavy Metal magazine and Image comics."
In other news, BLOOD TSUNAMI has announced the addition of former GLUECIFER bassist Stu Manx to the group's ranks.
BLOOD TSUNAMI is:
Pete - Lead Guitar and Vocals

Blacklisted Officially Staying Together
After several weeks of uncertainly, including an early-July break-up announcement, Blacklisted has decided to carry on. They've issued the following statement:
"Anyone that has been following the Blacklisted rumor mill has probably heard every thing under the sun regarding this band. To clear things up I would first like to say, thank you to anyone who has showed any interest and emailed, messaged or otherwise got in touch with us, giving kind words to stay together. While driving across the country to play Sound and Fury, I got a phone call from a friend in Chicago for us to play there on our way back home, We had been talking about how we thought we made a bad decision with 'breaking up' so the prospect of another show was a good one. After we found a bass player and confirmed for the Chicago show, we got offered two more shows (Denver, Omaha). After playing these shows and continuing on our 'mini-tour' we all for the first time since Tim left the band felt on the same page about continuing on without him. Our experience at Sound And Fury alone was enough to make us re-evaluate our decision, one of the most intense experiences we have ever had as a band. We can't wait for next year. With that said, Blacklisted is still a band. We will be touring the United states all of September. October we will be going to Europe with Rise And Fall and in November we will be doing around a week or so with a band that says there are No Heroes [editor - that would be Converge]."
When Knives Go Skyward Change Name To Deign
St. Louis band When Knives Go Skyward has officially changed their name to Deign. According to the band, "Labels felt [our name] was too cliche and too long. Whatever, we loved it and so did many, but we were apprently being held back because of it. So we came up with this and now it's off to the races."
Meanwhile, the group has been in talks with an undisclosed UK label for the release of their new EP, which will consist of 6-7 songs. Deign is also solidifying plans to release their debut album as well.

Watch Audioslave's "Original Fire" Video Online
Audioslave are out with the video to their latest single 'Original Fire', from the band's forthcoming album 'Revelations', due out September 5th. You can watch it at Yahoo! Music.
As previously reported, Audioslave recorded "Revelations" at Henson Studios in Los Angeles with acclaimed producer Brendan O'Brien. O'Brien, whose myriad credits include PEARL JAM and BRUCE SPINGSTEEN, mixed AUDIOSLAVE's "Out of Exile" record and the "Live in Cuba" CD and DVD. His history with the band goes back even farther, as he produced RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE albums "Evil Empire" (1996), "The Battle of Los Angeles" (1999) and "Renegades" (2000) and mixed SOUNDGARDEN's "Superunknown" (1994).
"Revelations" follows 2005's "Out of Exile", which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top 200 and featured the Grammy-nominated single "Doesn't Remind Me".
"Revelations" track listing:
01. Revelations
02. One And The Same

06. Broken City
07. Somedays
08. Shape of Things To Come
09. Jewel of the Summertime

This Is Hell Replaces Bassist and Guitarist
This Is Hell recently added guitarist Chris Reynolds to their line-up. Reynolds, formerly of Scraps And Heart Attacks, replaces Joe Osolin, who left This Is Hell in early-July. He is being replaced by John Moore (ex-Subterfuge), who will make his live debut with the group on August 23rd.

Deadsy To Have Hometown Release Party
Deadsy is celebrating the release of PHANTASMAGORE at home! The Roxy will host the band's record release show Monday, August 21, night prior to street date.
The band is currently touring the States as part of the Family Values Tour and most recently brought their signature "undercore" sound to unsuspecting crowds at Lollapalooza.
This sophomore LP is a graduation from 2002's COMMENCEMENT yet still doesn't stray far from the unique Deadsy mold. The mutant synthesis of '80s new wave and bubblegum death metal beloved by Deadsy's fierce cult following is much in evidence on the album, but so, too, is the strain of pre-punk glam art rock pioneered by Reed in the Velvet Underground. Stand out tracks like "Razor Love," a modernized synth-induced jam, complete with sing-a-long chorus and dueling guitars introduces the album and quickly takes a surprising turn with "Carrying Over," a 12-string acoustic-driven pop song, hinting at Labyrinth-era Bowie.
Deadsy is revered amongst their peers and fans alike as their shows are extraordinary exhibitions of sight and sound.
Korn's Family Values Tour Continues To Sellout
KORN’S THE FAMILY VALUES TOUR is back--in a big way--as fans in the south are turning out in record numbers to see this summer’s hottest tour.
Kicking off with a sold-out show of 17,000 rocking fans at Nashville’s Starwood Amphitheatre, THE FAMILY VALUES TOUR has gone on to set new numbers for the tour KORN created and headlined in 1998, as evidenced by shows in Atlanta, GA (17,900), San Antonio (17,000), Dallas (19,000) and Houston (18,000).
The tremendous response to the Family Values Tour comes on the heels of Korn’s Platinum-plus selling album SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE, which has been in the Billboard Top 100 for 35 weeks, and is the first release of their ground-breaking new joint venture deal with EMI and Live Nation.
“Korn’s new deals are working for all involved,” said Peter Katsis, senior VP of music at The Firm, co-owners of The Family Values Tour. “Through all of Korn’s new partnerships, we are able to blow up the Korn brand as well as being able to deliver a great bill and a great day for Korn fans.”
New Year Of Desolation Album Available Online
Indiana-based thrashers YEAR OF DESOLATION have posted an early mix of the band’s song “Flavor Of The Weak” on its MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/yearofdesolation) as a pre-cursor to the band’s forthcoming Prosthetic Records debut.
Currently on tour across the United States with Cerberus and Forever In Terror on the “Cultivating The Masses” tour, YEAR OF DESOLATION just recently completed recording of the band’s Prosthetic debut, tentatively dubbed ‘Year of Desolation.’ Recorded with producer Jamie King (Between The Buried And Me, Through The Eyes of The Dead), the record is due out in early 2007 through Prosthetic. Touring plans for the fall are currently in the works, tentatively teaming YEAR OF DESOLATION up with label mates BURN IN SILENCE. More details will be announced when they are available.
Hear Dragonforce Online Now
DragonForce have been slaying fans all summer with "Through the Fire and Flames," the first single off their smash third album, Inhuman Rampage, and we thought it was high time to reward loyal fans with another free audio stream from said album right here on RR.com.
"Operation Ground and Pound" is that stream, and you can sample it in all its 7+ minute glory by clicking HERE.
SYL's "You Suck" Becomes Anthem Of Ozzfest
STRAPPING YOUNG LAD have embraced the fact that they are the bastard children of this year’s Ozzfest and in turn redefined the lyrics to “You Suck” to further represent their feelings on the massive summer festival. Jed Simon (guitars) further elaborates, “Playing ‘You Suck’ every day on the Ozzfest has become a bit of a legend. We keep hearing people talking about it, and Devin’s slightly changed lyrics are always hilarious. It’s cool to look around while we are playing it, and see the crews and other band members cracking up! Bob Meadows, vocalist from A Life Once Lost, has been joining us everyday on stage to help with the backup vocal duties and it is definitely a sight to behold.”
Heaven Shall Burn Post Another New Track Online
The German powerhouse HEAVEN SHALL BURN were one of the first groups to ultimately shatter the boundaries that stood between the death metal and hardcore genres. Now they have triumphantly returned with Deaf To Our Prayers, which is set for a September 5th release.
The album is a stunning portrayal of sheer aggression and musical technicality that will quickly catch the attention of any extreme music fan. The disc will also contain a bonus DVD featuring a 30-minute live set from last year’s Hell On Earth festival along with “The Weapon They Fear” video clip. With this effort the dynamic quintet have undoubtedly proved once again that they are taking metal in a new direction that knows no limitations.
You can download out the blistering new track “Counterweight” here.
Maik Weichert (guitars) sheds some light on the meaning of the song: “We open-minded and responsible people can think and act for ourselves. We are not going to have our minds surrender to control and manipulation. Maybe some God has given us a brain, so we should use it and not rely on facts prepared by others. We are not against sincere and modern Christians who do good things and love ‘thy neighbour’. Still, some fundamentalist religious organisations like the ‘Jesus Revolution Army’ are striving for power and influence and target society where it is most vulnerable: the youth. Secularisation is one of the greatest achievements of modern societies, and it needs to be defended. We are the Counterweight!”
Deaf To Our Prayers is the long-awaited follow-up to HEAVEN SHALL BURN’s highly acclaimed album Antigone, which was their first release to garner worldwide praise. The new disc was recorded and mixed by renowned producer Jacob Hansen (Mercenary, Raunchy) in Denmark and it quickly evolved into the group’s most brutal offering yet.
HEAVEN SHALL BURN plays with the utmost sincerity and urgency touching upon topics concerning people’s behavior towards the disabled, veganism, war and racism. The combination of melodic death metal and crushing metalcore has never been delivered with such conviction.
Behemoth Joins Machine Head On Stage
During Machine Head's last show in St Paul Minnesota for the Sounds of The Underground Tour, Orion, Seth and Nergal from Behemoth, Matt from Trivium and Doug from Terror were invited onstage for a crunching rendition of 'Davidian'. Behemoth did their characteristic simultaneous windmills, and sang along for the chorus.
Says Behemoth frontman, Nergal,
"I watched their set every day and the way these guys embrace the energy is unspeakable! Also, Rob & Co. played a new song and fuck me, its the best thing theyve made ever: fast and fuckin furious. It was a privilege to share the stage with one of the most incredible metal bands out there. The tour is not over yet, but I can already say that this was my absolute highlight".
A short video clip of the performance is available for viewing from the main MySpace page. Behemoth are now in Vancouver recovering from their Canadian show, anxious to rip up the crowds once again.
Column
This Week In Metal - August 10th, 2006
Welcome to the return of This Week In Metal, a column I used to do before I was forced to take a hiatus from metalunderground.com. In this weekly column, we will update the top 10 selling albums in the metal industry (courtesy of CMJ) and the top 10 radio singles (pulled from Music Match). They use a number of sources for the list, including all satellite radio. While you may find a few bands that are too soft for the list, I assure you there will be more then enough surprises. Feel free to comment on the list and who you think is over/under-rated, what bands you expected to see and which ones you didn't. Again this column will run weekly, so be sure to check for it every Thursday in the columns area of MetalUnderground.com.
Now for the music, we will start each week with the albums. It's a good mix of what bands are bursting the underground, and some bands that have been killing for quite a while now.
Rank | Band | Album | Weeks | Peak |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Shadows Fall | Fallout From The War | 1 | 1 |
2 | SYL | The New Black | 1 | 2 |

9 | The Acacia Strain | Dead Walk | 1 | 9 |
10 | Bury Your Dead | Beauty And The Breakdown | 1 | 10 |
Now for the tunes. These singles are a real who's who amongst metal right now. I find the list to be powerful and only really have one flaw. Keep in mind some songs have been out longer then others and have picked up a good fanbase on the radio, other songs have just come out and are sure to see their time at the top.

Emperor Announce Upcomming Plans
After triumphantly headlining the annual Wacken Open Air Festival and completing recent capacity performances in America, EMPEROR today announce two additional performances for 2006. Scheduled Saturday, October 7th EMPEROR will headline the fifth annual Motstoy Festival in the band's hometown of Notodden. Formed in 2002 by local youth and supportive arts organizations, this year's festival will also include appearances by RED HARVEST, MORTIIS, SHE SAID DESTROY, and PAGAN'S MIND, among others.
"The Motstoy festival is a non-profit organization situated in Notodden that my company Mnemosyne Productions has endorsed since its start in 2002," says vocalist/guitarist Ihsahn. "As it is a no-alcohol arrangement with no age limit, it is a great opportunity for EMPEROR to play a local show and at the same time give younger fans a chance to see us live." Ticket and sponsorship information can be found at the festival's official site.
EMPEROR additionally confirm their return to England for an exclusive engagement at the famed London Astoria. Scheduled Saturday, October 28th the show will feature supporting performances from Candlelight Recording artist TO-MERA and Nocturnal Art Productions recording artist SHE SAID DESTROY.
"It's great to finally come back to England with EMPEROR," says Samoth. "England is where we first started out in the early 90's; signing to Candlelight Records and heading out on our first real tour. We've always had a strong following in England, both press and fans, and we've built up a strong relationship throughout the years with the folks at Candlelight Records and Plastic Head, so it was a very obvious choice for us to return to the United Kingdom. All hail & see you soon!"
EMPEROR's final album, Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise, was released October 2001. In 2004, Candlelight Records reissued the band's four genre-defining albums, Wrath of the Tyrants, In the Nightside Eclipse, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk and IX Equilibrium; each featuring bonus footage and material previously unavailable on both European and US-licensed versions. All recordings are available as part of Candlelight's vinyl collectors series on sale at exclusive retailers worldwide or by direct purchase from the label's official webstores (European customers visit www.plastichead.com; North American customers visit the recently launched www.candlelightrecordsusa.com). Additional merchandise from EMPEROR is also available.
The recently announced EMPEROR guitar tabulature book, Scattered Ashes: A Decade of Emperial Wrath will see worldwide release in time for the London performance. The 132-page oversized book featuring foreword and transcriptions by Ihsahn will include original tabs for thirteen EMPEROR classics contained on the band's 2003 compilation of the same name.

Relapse Records To Re-Release Smaller Bands Debuts
On October 17th, Relapse Records will reissue BRUTAL TRUTH's Sounds of the Animal Kingdom and Kill Trend Suicide as a single release.
Metal tomes the world over heralded NYC's purveyors of organized chaos BRUTAL TRUTH the ultimate grindcore kings of the 90's. With the release of their post-Earache material Sounds of the Animal Kingdom and the preceding Kill Trend Suicide mini-CD, their time of complete global appreciation arrived. These four musical misanthropological javamen created recordings which left no jaw unfloored. Sounds... painted frightening, Pollock-esque lyrical images of human deevolution and technological dehumanization while twenty twisting tunes embodied the definitive musical expression of survival of the fittest! Kill Trend Suicide negated the entrenched musical trends of the day while confronting the downward spiral of our decaying society and the emotional suffocation of city life. Both recordings combined the most muscular attributes of grindcore, death metal, hardcore punk and rock. Here they are combined in one larger-than-life and specially priced package; remastered, repackaged, and replete with bonus video footage, extensive, exhaustive liner notes from each member of the band, and a forward from Choosing Death author Albert Mudrian.
On October 31st, Relapse Records will reissue INCANTATION's Onward to Golgotha.
Long heralded as one of the heaviest, sickest, and most uncompromising death metal bands in the world, New Jersey's INCANTATION has forged a legacy of brutality unmatched by any other American group. In 1992, the bands most celebrated lineup entered a then unknown Trax East Studios with a then unproven engineer Steve Evetts and emerged with Onward to Golgotha, the most dark and blasphemous death metal record to date. The combination of the inhuman growl of vocalist Craig Pillard, the ruthlessly savage aural malevolence, and pitiless anti-Christian attack was the ultimate musical sacrilege. Onward... redefined the bounds of brutality and blasphemy for the entire genre of death metal. This is absolute brutality!!! Includes a free DVD with three full live sets from the Onward...
After three infamously influential albums on Amphetamine Reptile Records and numerous tours with HELMET, NEUROSIS, and more, TODAY IS THE DAY moved to the grounds of the Relapse compound and unleashed it's most definitive album to date: the legendary Temple of the Morning Star. Reverend Steve Austin had overcome extreme band and personal turmoil, and his maniacally negative personal frustration shaped the 18 track service wholly deserving worship, contemplation, and reverence. Temple of the Morning Star indoctrinated tens of thousands of new members, strengthened the faith of the previously converted and was lavished with critical acclaim from the likes of Guitar, Thrasher, AP, Kerrang, Metal Hammer, Terrorizer and dozens more. Temple... was the most widely circulated TITD album, and over the span of a year it allowed the band to grow from an infamous fringe group to the wildly influential band of today. Temple of the Morning Star is an undisputed classic.

Mayhem's Use of Animal Parts On Stage Causes Stink
MAYHEM's appearance at the recently held Gates of Metal festival (Hultsfred, Sweden) created quite some commotion in the press. Firstly due to the band's striking live show and secondly to the attack launched by Animal Rights Sweden who condemned the use of animal parts on stage.
In Sweden it is only allowed to use animal by-products in an artistic context with the approval of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. The permit needs to be obtained up forehand.
Articles appeared in Swedish Aftonbladet and Norwegian VG among others. Pictures can also be found here and here
MAYHEM is currently concentrating on the upcoming live dates and the preparations for their new studio album and do not wish to comment on the event at this time. Questions can be asked during the promotion for "Ordo Ab Chao".

Akercocke mainman Jason Mendonca issued a typically uncompromising warning to fans about what they can expect at the festival: “Manchester beware, we are coming to ruin lives with a crushing assault of necromantic terror blasts and face melting guitar work.”
Ephel Duath Confirm UK Tour Dates
Eccentric jazz-metallers EPHEL DUATH will once again be heading over to the UK in October to confound audiences with their self styled “intentional discomfort”. The band will be playing a series of shows in support of their most recent album ‘Pain Necessary To Know’ following on from the Damnation Festival where they will be appearing alongside labelmates AKERCOCKE and BIOMECHANICAL and MISTRESS. Support bands are still to be confirmed and there will be other shows added to the tour, the current tour dates are:
