Welcome to the return of This Week In Metal, a column I used to do before I was forced to take a hiatus from metalunderground.com. In this weekly column, we will update the top 10 selling albums in the metal industry (courtesy of CMJ) and the top 10 radio singles (pulled from Music Match). They use a number of sources for the list, including all satellite radio. While you may find a few bands that are too soft for the list, I assure you there will be more then enough surprises. Feel free to comment on the list and who you think is over/under-rated, what bands you expected to see and which ones you didn't. Again this column will run weekly, so be sure to check for it every Thursday in the columns area of MetalUnderground.com.

Now for the music, we will start each week with the albums. It's a good mix of what bands are bursting the underground, and some bands that have been killing for quite a while now.

Now for the tunes. These singles are a real who's who amongst metal right now. I find the list to be powerful and only really have one flaw. Keep in mind some songs have been out longer then others and have picked up a good fanbase on the radio, other songs have just come out and are sure to see their time at the top.

I think stone sour is a little over-rated in here, especially looking at the quality of alot of these other bands. However it is picked by the same people who pick the other bands so MEH. I really enjoy seeing shadows fall at the top of both charts, they really are worth the hype there. All That Remains is finally getting some of the respect they deserve, not MANY people know their lead singer was the foremer frontman for shadows fall. I look to see slayer and lamb of god eating up the charts in the next few weeks.

Thoughts, opinoins ?

Shadows Fall does kick ass, so it's cool to see they're new sh*t is popular, and i agree that All That Remains does deserve some respect. I was surprised at they're newest album, i was expecting it to be pretty soft, but it had some kick ass, heavy songs, and impresive guitar work. Also, I've heard several of Threat Signal's new sh*t and it sounds like it's gonna be a bad a$$ album. and i think ur right VT, the new stone sour is pretty over rated. i was dissapointed. but yeah LOG and Slayer will most likely take over the charts pretty soon. i'm interested to see how Unearth's new album will do. i think it's pretty good. and sh*t, just 2 months till some new Deftones!

Right on. Except maybe about the deftones......... I forgot about Unearth, they are building a huge following, and by no accident.

I can honestly say I didn't expect bands of the calibre of Celtic Frost up there. That was quite surprising. I almost expected a "what's what in mainstream radio metal" list, but this is excellent. Stone Sour was no shock, though I don't think they belong in a list with the rest of those bands. Good to see Strapping kicking anus, too.

lol vayne, completely agree with regards to Dragonforce....

I find it a shame they're so overtly power metal on those vocals and lyrics.

I like that LOG, SYL, Slayer and Shadows Fall are getting some notice....Though all have been doing great for 2 years or better, it's nice to see them in the spotlight in a time when rock and metal in general seem to be in a transitory state.

yeah, the Dragonforce vocals are a bit of a turnoff for me too. im also not a fan of their soloing guitar sound either, sounds really cheesy.

cant wait till the old school bands (priest, maiden, megadeth, etc.) start releasing their albums. unfortunately that wont be for a while yet.

I agree on Dragonforce 100%. I've heard Stone Sour's new cd and I must admit I'm impressed. As far as Shadows Fall goes, they're all fabulous musicians except their vocalist. He annoys the sh!t out of me. All That Remains, however, is a must buy. But Threat Signal has to be the most overrated band on this list. Not only do they replicate Meshuggah's music (except for the singing, which still resembles Fear Factory), but they copied a title! I'm sorry but I'll take originallity over technicallity any day!

Im surprized no1 has released that even though Hatebreed is 10th they are still OVER-rated. My jury is still out on the Acacia Strain as well.

Shadows Fall...heh, just goes to show you what getting a track on the "soap opera for men" will do for a band's popularity.

Also, anyone see the commercials for "Christ Illusion" on ESPN, who happen to be owned by Disney. Funny stuff, there. Slayer will probably be owning the charts soon.

Ya know DeathInEye because a band sounds like another band doesn't mean that they're not a good band. And to say that they're also unoriginal because they used the word Rational in their song title is really gay too. Can't use a word that another band used? Funny. Hey they're signed so they must be doing something right, huh?

Actually I don't think Strapping Young LAD are overrated at all. They are different from every other band out there and they deserve to be on the list. These are just what people have bought.

Opeth, I love how you bash my opinion on Threat Signal yet give your supporting evidence for SYL being good as them being original. You're right, Threat Signal are skilled musicians. You have to be good in order to play Meshuggah rhythms. And it's not because they used "rational". Rational can be used in many different phrases, like rational rebuttle, or rational opinion. But when put with "eyes," which essentially implies sight, or GAZE, you get the same title with spelling alterations. When you give me a rational reason to like them, I'll give them another rational listen.
