Blood Red Throne Begin Work On 'Altered Genesis'

Norwegian death metal band Blood Red Throne recently began work on their new album, titled "Altered Genesis." Here's a quote from guitarist Tchort regarding the project thus far:

"After a turbulent, and in many ways a classical BRT episode, the recording process is now heading forward again. With one drummer put out of 'his misery' and several others biting the dust, the band laid down the drum tracks with the help of Bernt A Moen and are now halfway through recording the guitar tracks. We had set a high standard for this album, and anyone who couldn't meet that standard, would simply have to go. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't clean and it certainly wasn't going to be about lowering the quality of performance - it was the fucking BRT curse striking again!"

Look for the album to hit stores in early-2005 via Earache Records.

Helmet Tour and Album Pushed Back By Injury

Hard rock act Helmet has been forced to push back the start of its first tour in seven years after group leader Page Hamilton broke his collar bone in a mountain biking accident. The trek was due to kick off Sept. 17 in Atlanta but will now get underway in early October. An updated routing is still being finalized.

Hamilton's accident has also necessitated moving the release of Helmet's new Interscope album, "Size Matters," from Sept. 14 to Oct. 5. Tracks from the set can be sampled on Helmet's official Web site.

Beyond Hamilton, the new incarnation of the group features guitarist Chris Traynor, former White Zombie drummer John Tempesta and former Anthrax bassist Frank Bello.

Helmet's last album was 1997's "Aftertaste," which peaked at No. 47 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than 132,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Dave Grohl Signs To Univeral Publishing

Universal Music Publishing Group announced today the signing of Dave Grohl to an exclusive, worldwide co-publishing deal.

As founder and leader of the globally multi-platinum and multiple Grammy winning Foo Fighters, from his work as Nirvana drummer, to stand-in drummer for Queens Of The Stone Age, Tenacious D., Killing Joke and (most recently) Nine Inch Nails, to multi-instrumentalist ringleader of his heavy metal Probot side project, to holding his own alongside Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello, co-fronting the 2003 Grammy tribute to Joe Strummer, Grohl has applied his Midas touch to every project he's ever undertaken.

Dave Grohl's Foo Fighters and Probot families both have cause for celebration, as Foo Fighters "One By One" was named Best Rock Album at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards (the second Foo Fighters LP in a row to do so), and Probot's eponymous underground metal all-star opus was hailed as "The Year's First Great Metal Album" by Rolling Stone magazine.

"One By One" is the second consecutive Foo Fighters record to receive the Best Rock Album Grammy; the band's previous "There is Nothing Left to Lose" took the same statuette home in 2000. The Foo have four Grammys overall as the "One By One's" "All My Life" single took Best Hard Rock Performance honors and their "Learn To Fly" video won the 2000 Short From Music Video Grammy.

Commented David Renzer, Worldwide President, Universal Music Publishing Group: "Dave Grohl has long been at the forefront of rock whether as a member of Nirvana and now leading the hugely successful Foo Fighters, as well as his various other projects. We are honored that he has entrusted UMPG to be his worldwide publisher."

Managed by John Silva of SAM/Silva Artist Management, Grohl joins UMPG's successful roster, which includes Beastie Boys, U2, Prince, Paul Simon, 50 Cent, Blink-182, Shania Twain, and No Doubt (among many others).

No Girls Allowed?: The Great Kat Interviewed

"No Girls Allowed?" is the title of an article written by David Segal for the Washington Post in which the issue of the lack of female lead guitarists is examined and The Great Kat (aka Karen Thomas) is interviewed. Here's an excerpt:

Where are all the guitar heroines?

Where are all the female guitarists who can light it up in some original, groundbreaking and influential way? Can you name any? Come to think of it, have you ever heard the phrase "guitar heroine"?

Probably not, and for good reason. This won't win you friends and maybe it can't be said out loud, but here's the hard and horrible truth: Fifty years after Elvis Presley recorded "That's All Right Mama," the grand total of pantheon-worthy female rock guitarists is zero.

And then a little more from The Great Kat herself:

"Any idiot off the street can play the guitar," she sort of yells, without pausing for breath. "But you have to have attitude, you've got to know the basics, and women, unfortunately, whether in music or politics, they don't have the mind-set to practice and work to go [testicles] to [testicles]. Not letting guys take over. 'Get the [heck] out of my way, now! I'm going to kick your [rear]! I'm going to stomp all over you!' "

Lucubro Call It Quits

LUCUBRO has called it uits after 3 1/2 years of existence. The band passes this along:

As all things come to an end, so has the reign of Lucubro. Sadly, the band has decided to part ways. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us, all of the great bands we've had the chance to play with, and all the friends we have made over the last 3 1/2 years. Even though Lucubro is being laid to rest, new projects will inevitably rise from the ashes. The Lucubro.com website will remain open for awhile longer as we still have CDs and some T-shirts available and you can still contact individual members through their Lucubro email addresses listed on the site.

We have two last shows scheduled for September - one in Worcester at our home away from home, the Lucky Dog - and one in Somerville at the newly-renovated Skybar for our Boston-area friends. We do hope you can make it out to one or both of these shows.

Lastly, in more positive news, the August issue of the UK magazine - Terrorizer - contains a 1/2 page article about Lucubro. Terrorizer magazine is available at Newbury Comics. Thanks to Paul Stenning for the write-up.

Thanks again to everyone who helped make the last 3 1/2 years so successful for Lucubro. We whole-heartedly appreciate the support.

Until we meet again,
Krista Van Guilder, Chris Gervais, Heath Thayer

Here are details for the final shows: More...
