Soulfly Apologizes, But Questions Remain

Soulfly's management is apologizing for their non- performance in Window Rock this weekend. The band enraged audiences when they abruptly canceled a gig and then refused to return to take the stage during a metal festival (see related story).

Publicist Jamie Roberts sent a statement to the Native American Times in response to an account that posted on our website Monday.

“SOULFLY would like to issue an apology to our fans in Window Rock, AZ for the last-minute postponement of the show at Dean C Jackson Memorial Arena. We did not want to postpone the show, but had to, due to numerous problems with the production as well as the weather conditions. We have every intention of coming back to the area and making it up to all who came out to see us as soon as possible,” Roberts stated.

Promoter Randall Hoskie, a 33-year-old Navajo from Window Rock, said that band still pocketed the $5,000 advance before departing for another gig in Tempe.

Soulfly manager Gloria Cavalera said there were problems with the show from the promoter’s end, including inadequate preparation for weather problems.

" There were a lot of production requirements he didn't do," Cavalera said. " We postponed the show because the weather was unpredictable. We were straight up told we could not put up our equipment. The whole sky was black and there was just a tiny bit of light coming through.” She also criticized Hoskie for not providing the band with catered food.

As far as the money goes, Cavalera said that Hoskie gave the band a “deposit,” and that the cash is currently in the possession of the band’s booking agent.

"I guess [Hoskie] has to let the booking agent know if he is going to rebook the show,” she said.

Usurper Begin Recording New Album

Posted on the official Usurper website:

Week 1 of the studio is over. The drums are tracked, and everything is sounding massive. We are recording and mixing at a new studio this time, it is a studio in Chicago called Rax Trax. The vibe of the place is very comfortable, and the equipment is top notch. We are having a great time, and Neil is getting used to us again. The days have been long, 8 - 12 hours a day, and there has been a lot of beer, smoke, sweat and Hot Shots Golf 3 between sessions, (Dan Tyrantor is a true tyrant usurper of the video golf world!)

Next week I will lay down all the rhythm tracks, then we will start the bass, vocals, leads, acoustics, and finally finish up the week with some mixing. Yes, we are cranking this out fast, and putting in some long hours, but the end result will be worth it. Back is the drum insanity of "Threshold of The Usurper," and the guitar tone will match that as well. I think the overall impact of the songs will be like Threshold type chaos combined with Necronemesis type precision. The production will sound like the instrument tones of Threshold/Diabolosis combined with the attack of Twilight Dominion. The cover art is once again being done by Craig 'Wicked Hand' Simpson, and we should have a section of that posted in a couple weeks or so. Thanx to all of our metal brothers (and sisters) who have stuck with us through all the years and all the line-up bullshit, we won't let you down!

New Judas Priest Album To Feature Bonus DVD

The long wait for new music from the definitive Judas Priest lineup of vocalist Rob Halford, lead guitarist Glenn Tipton, lead guitarist K.K. Downing, bass guitarist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis is nearly over. Judas Priest will release a new studio album on December 28, 2004, worldwide on Sony Music (Sony's Epic Records label in North America). The album title and track listing is forthcoming. As a special bonus, a live concert DVD filmed during shows in Barcelona and Valencia in Spain in June 2004 will be included in the initial shipment. The new album is the first from the Halford/Tipton/Downing/Hill/Travis lineup since 1990's acclaimed "Painkiller."

Tipton recently described the new album as "classic Priest" to Entertainment Tonight: "Even though we've evolved, it is recognizable Priest. The formula between myself, K.K. and Rob has been tried and tested. It was fantastic to all get back in the same room."

Judas Priest has celebrated its reunion with triumphant concerts in summer 2004. The band first conquered Europe and is now in the middle of the Ozzfest tour, for which rave reviews for its performances are the norm. Select non-Ozzfest dates are included on this North American rampage.

The most recent release from Judas Priest is the critically acclaimed, best-selling box set career retrospective "Metalogy" on Sony Music/Legacy Recordings.

The full power of Judas Priest will be on display when the band embarks on a headlining world tour in early 2005 immediately following the release of the new album.
