Satyricon Report From Hole In The Sky Festival
Satyr has posted his thoughts on last weekend's tribute to BATHOTY's Quorthon, held at the Hole In The Sky Festival:
“A worthy farewell to the king...
On Saturday, the biggest gathering of black metal stars on a stage ever, took place in Bergen, Norway during the Hole In The Sky festival. I have already stated here what I feel about this man's work. I just want to say that we - the performers, were so proud to be a part of this and this was the funeral we held for him it felt like. We were all filled with awe and respect for each other's participation in the tribute and his songs. I'm glad Frost was in the crowd so he could fill in me and Abbath (ex-Immortal), on how it felt experiencing it from the crowd perspective.
A truly magical evening that I hope and think will inspire you all. It's crucial that you know Bathory's music to fully understand the depths of Black Metal. Go buy his six first records if you don't have them. Don't download them, buy them. On vinyl even if you can.
It was very emotional for all of us and I think for me, a lot of it comes from knowing that will never be another Bathory. Today you can't make the same kind of impact without touring, videos, interviews etc etc. He could allow himself to stay away from it all because he established a name during a time where all of this was not needed in the same way as it is today. His records are still here though, and bands like ourselves are still here to carry on the true SPIRIT of Black Metal!”

Phil Anselmo Insults Pittsburgh Ozzfest Crowd
Scott Mervis of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reviewed the Ozzfest 2004 traveling heavy metal festival when it hit Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday (August 28). An excerpt from his review follows:
Black Label Society, featuring Ozzy axman Zakk Wylde, roared through a set of squealing metal with guitars all up to 12. It was full-out, no frills and a little undistinguished compared to what was to come. Wylde, a rugged character, did impart some wisdom from his WWII-vet father: 'You can fly planes into our buildings, but when you [mess] with the best, you're gonna die with the rest.'
Phil Anselmo takes the award for the most hostile performer of the day — and perhaps the year. He didn't seem to understand why the corrosive hardcore of his band, Superjoint Ritual, didn't inspire the overheated crowd to maintain a constant mosh pit.
The tattooed and mohawked Anselmo took to insults (or at least his idea of them): "If you're standing with your arms folded, you are a homosexual!" He also ratcheted up the military rhetoric: "This is the United States of America, and we can hate whoever we want! So, let's start busting heads!"
Ultimately, the angry but amusing kook went off the stage, slamming down the mike and saying, "You're the worst audience I ever played in front of."
Dimmu Borgir frontman Shagrath took the stage intoning, 'We have been spelllllbound! By the devilllll!' The Norwegian band held down the costumed freak slot on the main stage, bounding out in white facepaint, swinging hair and spiked leather pants. They had a cool take on gothic metal with monster vocals and funereal keyboards over the grinding guitars. Twenty minutes into the set they unleashed the vocals of bassist Simen Hestnaes, who had a high, pure voice to offset Shagrath's demonic growl.

God Among Insects Set Release Date For Debut Album
The anticipated debut from Sweden's God Among Insects is set for a US release date of September 21 and follows already much acclaim and controversy as part of its European album release. World Wide Death found initial objection from distributors and retailers in Germany who found the album's artwork too graphic. Comprised of Dark Funeral's Emperor Magnus Caligula (vocals), The Project Hate's Lord K Philipson (guitar), Vomitory's Tobben Gustafsson (drummer), and newcomer Tomas Elofsson (guitar), the album was recorded at Abyss Studios with Tommy Tagtgren. Sweden's Close-Up Magazine has already called the band one of five of the most interesting bands. Add early coverage via Metal Maniacs, Blabbermouth and Brave Words and the high curiosity surrounding the band and album release make it an album to mark and watch.
