Unearthing The Metal Underground in Red Deer

Each week in "Unearthing the Metal Underground," we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week, I am exploring the metal scene in Red Deer, Canada, situated about halfway between Alberta's provincial capital to the north, Edmonton, and the city of Calgary to the south. Surrounded by farming communities and cattle ranches, a small but tight-knit collection of metal bands have been heavying things up in the prairie city of 90,000, setting the stage for Red Deer to finally find it's way onto the metal map. Thurisaz Streaming New Song

Thurisaz has checked in with the following update about posting a new song online:

"After three years of hard working, nagging, good times and bad times, Thurisaz is very proud to introduce you to the new song at this location! The song is called 'Unhealed' and will be the first song on The Cimmerian Years. We think it pretty sums up what to expect of the new album.

"Throughout the years we have evolved a lot as a band, but we always try to stick to the core of Thurisaz: making music that is not especially difficult nor technical but tries to reach people to the depths of their hearts. Guestvocals are done by the wonderful Els Blieck (Inis Cathaigh), needless to say that we are very thrilled about the result. Mixing was once again done by Kris of CCR, who (once again) did an outstanding job! Enjoy the song and hopefully see you soon!

"An album-teaser will be posted once mixing is done! We are currently looking for a label for the new release! If you like the song and want to hear more, be sure to contact us!"

Woe Comments On Upcoming Album

Candlelight Records has announced October 12th as the North American release date for "Quietly, Undramatically," the new album from black metal act Woe. Recorded at Gradwell House in Haddon Heights, New Jersey with additional tracking completed at front man Chris Grigg's BS1 in Philadelphia, the album is the first to feature a full band ensemble comprised of members from Absu, Woods of Ypres, The Green Evening Requiem, Infernal Stronghold, and Rumpelstiltskin Grinder.

Formed in 2007, Woe originally began as a solo project of Philadelphia-based multi-instrumentalist Chris Grigg. Grigg commented, “Quietly, Undramatically is a major step forward for Woe. Not only is it our first release for Candlelight Records but the debut of Woe: the band as opposed to Woe: the solo project. The performances of Evan Madden (drums) and Shane Madden (bass) bring Woe to a whole new level. It is a much more mature album, featuring dynamics and ideas that Woe has never been able to tackle before. We are all very excited for this album's release and the subsequent live performances in support of it!"

The album reunites the band with designer/illustrator Justin Miller. "Justin and I have worked together on different projects for years now and he has never let me down. I consider his art an additional song on the album -- the most important song, the one that ties it all together. Sound is what I do, sight is what he does, and it is a relief to know that Woe's presentation is handled with such feeling." More...

Amaranthe To Enter The Studio

Amaranthe is set to being recording a new album in October with Jacob Hansen of Hansen Studio in Ribe, Denmark. The as-of-yet untitled album is scheduled for a spring 2011 release. Commented guitarist Olof Mörck:

"Needless to say, we are very much looking forward to getting all the tracks on tape! There has been quite a stir and hype around Amaranthe lately, and it is funny to think that everything that people have heard so far are demos recorded in a bedroom - it is going to be fantastic to able to show people the true potential of our music, with a killer sound! This whole production is going to be HUGE and spending two months with Jacob Hansen recording the album will ensure that we will have a production second to none! Jacob Hansen is definitely one of the top names in today's metal recording scene, and when we found out that he was available on quite short notice we where very enthused! Keep your eyes peeled when this baby is unleashed in early spring 2011!"

Insomnium Signs Deal With Century Media

Century Media Records has announced the signing of Insomnium, who recently won the Finnish Metal Awards earlier this year for Best Band and Best Album. The band comments: "We are very happy to announce that we have signed a deal with the mighty Century Media Records. Throughout the spring and summer we negotiated with several attractive labels but in the end it was clear that Century Media would be our home for the years to come. Their enthusiasm, professionalism and genuine love for music made an instant impact on us. We are convinced that this alliance will lead to even greater achievements in the future and also avails us to tour outside Europe more often. And naturally it is a great honor for us to stand in the same team with the likes of Dark Tranquillity, Arch Enemy, Paradise Lost, The Haunted, Finntroll and Turisas. A new exciting chapter in the story of Insomnium has begun!

"We want to thank Jens Prueter and the whole Century Media crew for putting their trust in us. We thank our manager Jukka Varmo for handling the negotiations very smoothly. We also wish to thank our previous label Candlelight Records for the decade that we spent with them. We salute you all!"

Jens Prueter, Head Of A&R Century Media Europe commented: "It's great to welcome a band that has developed over the past year to one of the most exciting bands in the Metal scene. I always liked their unique mix of Finnish melancholy with Melodic Death Metal and even more so they always blew my mind seeing them live. You can feel that this is a band of brothers who haven't changed their line-up since their debut album in 2002. In case of doubt go and see them on their tour with Dark Tranquillity this Fall – you won't be disappointed! I cheer my horns up North and thank Insomnium for their trust in Century Media Records."
