Interview With Karnivool

Walmart shopping raids. Existential questions. Super 8 hotels. Vehicular breakdowns. Rock concerts. Cross-country traveling. Strange food. Absurd observations about the mundane. Friendship.

This isn't a plot outline to a potential sequel of "The Hangover," but slice of life on the road for Australian band Karnivool. The act returned to the states this summer for its third U.S. tour (and first headlining run) to support second album "Sound Awake," which arrived in the States in February. The combination of the group's mesmerizing progressive tracks, superior live performances and support from Sony's SIN division is helping the five-piece act to seep into America's collective consciousness one show at a time. The steady of conversion of fans is evident by two concerts we saw Karnivool play within a year's time. Last fall we first watched the group entertain about 150 faithful at New York club Don Hill's; when we caught up with it again Aug. 27, it was captivating a full crowd at Bowery Ballroom with songs like "Themata," "New Day" and "All I Know."

When MetalUnderground.com spoke with singer Ian Kenny by phone a few weeks ago, the band was driving through Oregon on the way to Vancouver to kick off the tour. A few days prior, traveling was delayed for a few hours due to a broken water pump, so as repairs were made, Karnivool relaxed by descending on a local Walmart (they don't exist in Australia) and stocking up on essentials like Sharpies and Dickey shorts. "They've been a novelty for us, " Kenny says of Walmart. "We take full advantage of them when we come over here." More...

Swashbuckle Announces New Album Guests

New Jersey pirate thrashers Swashbuckle have issued the following statement about recruiting Anna Murphy and Meri Tadic of Eluveitie to guest on the band's upcoming album:

"We in the ‘Buckle are stoked to announce two very special guest appearances on 'Crime Always Pays…' That’s right, we sailed our ship right over a bunch of really high mountains and hijacked two of Switzerland’s finest folk metal musicians, the wonderful Anna Murphy and Meri Tadic from Eluveitie!

"Anna can be heard elegantly cranking her hurdy-gurdy’s rosin wheel on the song ‘Slowly Wept the Sea’, and Meri fiddles up a fury on the tune ‘Of Hooks And Hornswogglers’. We’ve been friends with the lasses for many a moon and it was a blast finally getting to work with them. However, don’t let this fool ya, ye twat waffles… this is still the most aggressive, in yar face Swashbuckle record to date, so ya best be checkin’ it out, or else the Swiss wenches get it!"

Viscera/// Comments On New Album

Italy's Viscera/// has issued the following update about the releasing "2 - As Zeitgeist Becomes Profusion of the I," the band's new album:

"Since its inception in 2000, Viscera/// strayed quite a bit from the grind paths they were threading. What started out as a straightforward brutalcore band meandered into an experimental quartet. With the introduction of psychedelic sounds, postcore bits and ambient/drone pieces it's quite easy to brand this outfit as the next 'post'-band.

"But there's more that meets the eye: The band never completely let go of their roots, balancing brutal grindcore with delicate post metal influences. This results in a truly unique sound that can shift from fragile to frenzy in a heartbeat. With this latest effort, 2 - As Zeitgeist Becomes Profusion of the I, these Italians produced their most ambitious and mature offering to this day which makes it the most complex yet accessible listening experience Viscera/// ever offered.

"There is a special edition limited to 100 copies, which comes in a DVD sized digipack and this will be only available directly through the label. You can pre-order this special edition from this day forward for 15 euro (p&p worldwide included). The CD itself will be released on October 31st."

Five Days Of Rain Pushes Back Album Release

"Hello everyone, we are mortified but unfortunately things did not go at best and unfortunately we are forced, in agreement with our label, to postpone new album release to November 22. All this is due to a series of misunderstandings, delays and mistakes paid by the company responsible for printing copies of the album.

"Anything was under our control and we just looked at situation going worse and worse, but we are sure you will understand and that you will wait a while. This does not mean that we will hibernate: we will always play as much gigs as possible and we will be very active on promoting new album. Thanks."

John Fattoruso Talks "Black Water Rising"

Brooklyn's Black Water Rising is keeping the flame of hard rock and heavy metal burning strong, taking the sounds of yesterday and translating them to the modern day. Guitarist John Fattoruso, previously of the now-defunct Stereomud, spoke with me about joining with Black Water Rising and the band's latest self-titled album.

Discussing the highs and lows of the music industry and his own place in it, Fattoruso stated "You’re playing in front of crowds every night and that was your job, and then all of a sudden you’re back in a day job. You’re like, Wow, what happened?" He also goes on to explain the appeal of Black Water Rising's sound, commenting "Any true metal head, and when I say metal head I don’t mean thrash metal or death metal, I mean just someone who appreciates good heavy music, would definitely like it. If they want to hear good vocals, we’ve got it. If you want to hear screaming, it’s on there too. We don’t shy away from anything." A transcription of our discussion can be found below, where John discusses how they managed to get a professional sound recording in an apartment and more. More...

Dark Funeral Parts Ways With Bass Player

Swedish blackened death metal outfit Dark Funeral has announced that they have parted ways with bassist, B-Force. A message from the band reads as follows:

"The dawn of a new dark era has risen, and a new hellish chapter has begun.

"Despite the circumstances, I must say that the band and I are extremely motivated and excited to start a new chapter in the saga that is Dark Funeral. We've already have some killer plans for the future. And all I can say at this point is that we'll be moving forward with full force and without mercy.

"Those of you who've followed Dark Funeral since the beginning in 1993, surly know that this is not the first time we've undergone a major lineup change. And whatever some people may have thought or whined about, no one can deny the fact that I/we've always succeeded in recruiting new and amazing musicians to move forward and reach new heights with the band. There is absolutely no doubt in our mind that this will again be the case.

"On August 21st we performed our last show with Emperor Magus Caligula at the Summer Breeze Festival in Germany. Since this was a very special performance in many ways, we not only put on our biggest pyro show ever, we also captured this gig with 10 cameras (including 1 crane). So you can be sure to expect a DVD release from this killer show in the near future. More info regarding the DVD will come in due time...

"Since parting ways with E.M.Caligula, it come as no surprise to the rest of us, that B-Force would follow the same path and throw in his towel too. So I wish to thank him for the six fantastic years he'd been with us on bass. It’s been a pleasure indeed working together." More...
