Pit Stories: Mosh Pit FAIL In A Snoop Dog Pit

We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Brendan K Duff of Pristina shares one from Lollapalooza back in the day:

Over the years, I've quite literally seen it all, or pretty damn close. From simple fistfights to full blown riots. Brass knuckles, bricks, chains, padlocks, tasers, bats, beer bottles, chairs, knives and guns. Fucked up bouncers, Police brutality, Fucked up violence of all kinds, it goes on and on. I could write a book on the unbelievable shit I've seen and done. All of this pales in comparison to the DUMBEST thing I've ever experienced... and sadly, I deserved it. I wish I could say that the story takes place at some fucked up hardcore show, or at least a SLAYER gig or something... Nope, Snoop Doggy Dogg.

In 1997 I was 16 years old. That summer I was invited to go see the Lollapalooza Fest. Looking back, I have no idea why I went, because the only band I gave a shit about that played was TOOL. But alas, I went, and what happened turned out to be the dumbest thing that ever happened to me. I remember spending the afternoon scamming beer and being an idiot. The crowd was your typical "douche bag" festival audience. (You know? 10,000 white boys with tribal tattoo's who "rock out" to bands like Disturbed and Godsmack. Alright, so now that we're on the same page, we can continue.)

I was drunk, watching the mutants, when Snoop hits the stage. All of a sudden, a giant douche bag mosh pit erupts... That's right, white people moshing to Snoop Dogg. I decided it would be hilarious to enter said mosh pit and show these assholes how it's done! I took about three steps into "the pit"... and blackout. Sadly, I was not only knocked unconscious immediately, but my nose was broken and a tooth was knocked out. Even worse, the tooth was attached to a retainer that was glued to the bottom row of my teeth. So I come to, confused, bleeding out the nose with a piece of wire hanging out of my mouth with a tooth on the end. As I limped away, I had to rip the retainer out, which broke another tooth it was glued to.

To try and save face, I toughed out the rest of the show, but the night ended with me in the ER, trying to explain the story without looking like a total moron (didn't work). And that, boys and girls, is the dumbest mosh pit experience to ever happen to me.

Pristina's new album, "The Drought (ov Salt and Sorrow)" is due out September 28th on Trendkill Recordings. The albums is produced by Steve Austin of Today Is The Day, and featuring guest appearances by Steve Austin, Rennie Resmini (Starkweather), and Scott Angelacos (Bloodlet). Check out some of their music on the band's MySpace page.

Check back every Tuesday for more pit stories.

The Project Hate Signs To Season Of Mist

Season of Mist has issued the following announcement about inking a deal with Swedish act The Project Hate: "Season of Mist is proud to welcome infamous industrial Death Metal act The Project Hate MCMXCIX to the roster! The Swedes' 6 song, 60+ minute seventh album will be mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö and has been tentatively scheduled for an early 2011 release."

Band leader Lord K. Philipson also made the following statement:

"Obviously there's a label in this world realizing there's some fucking potential in what we do, being ready to take the risk in today's illegal downloading dilemma, meaning they want to release the next album of The Project Hate MCMXCIX. The fact that there are still record companies around who try their hardest to get the best music out there absolutely astonishes me.

"To be able to do this album with a world wide distribution, thru a label who absolutely seem to know what they are doing, feels great. In the little time I have been in touch with the people of this label I have seen more professionalism than during my entire career. That says a lot. We can now concentrate on delivering the best damned recording we have ever done and leave the rest of the business to the record company in question. To be on the same roster as quality bands like Morbid Angel, Watain, Mayhem, and Cynic feels great. And to know that this disc will see the physical light of day is exactly how we want it to be. We want the whole package to be more than a thing on your monitor, and hopefully a lot of you guys feel the same - meaning you will buy a real copy of it in these times of digital theft being the new black. Dillinger Escape Plan Issues Warped Recap

Vocalist Greg Puciato of the Dillinger Escape Plan has issued the following recap of the Warped tour and general update about the band's activity:

"DEP Update August 24th. Category: Food and Restaurants. This is in the food and restaurants category for a reason - because it's gonna be tasty and mother fuckin' delicious, just like this new Big Boi album I'm listening to right now, which is, by the way, really good. If you haven't checked it out you absolutely should. That's the soundtrack to this blog and the funkiest shit I've heard in quite some time, although new Cee-Lo is certainly lookin' promising too. So yeah...Big Boi aside, where are we? Three months since the last blog? Well I can tell you where we AREN'T. We AREN'T on Warped Tour, which is really fucking weird after waking up for seven weeks straight in a one hundred degree grass parking lot. Waking up in a larger than coffin-sized bed, WITHOUT Liam across from me and Ben above me, is still bizarre over a week later.

"Seven weeks...what happened? Well besides throwing packs of black cat firecrackers into our guitar tech/all purpose badass Doug's bunk and having him not even blink an eye or act even remotely startled, accidentally swimming in an alligator infested lake, and watching Ben eat a birthday cake with a purple dick on it...fuck. I wish we could somehow have all of you there for every killer moment, cause the offstage stuff is twenty three hours of the day, playing is just an hour, and in the case of warped, was only a half an hour. Osten Bergoy Leaves Tristania Permanently

Tristania has issued the following update about vocalist Osten Bergoy leaving the band permanently:

"Last summer, Østen announced that he had decided to take some time off from Tristania to devote his time and attention to the new family members expected in August. A year on, it has become obvious that the time, dedication and efforts of fatherhood makes it hard to continue as a full-time member. Due to this, Østen recently informed the band that he sees no other option than to make his decision a permanent one. Tristania has asked Kjetil Nordhus (Head Disco, ex-Green Carnation, ex-Trail of Tears), who was engaged as Østen’s temporary stand-in, to replace Østen on a permanent basis, and Kjetil has accepted the offer."

Østen has also written the following statement for the fans: "I think it was about a year ago I announced that I was taking a break from Tristania to be with my girlfriend and the twins she was carrying. As some of you might recall, I promised that this break was just temporarily and that I would be back within a year or so. I am sorry to say that I have to break my promise. I never intended to, but the time I have spent with my family has made it obvious that it is impossible for me to combine playing an active part in Tristania with playing an active part in my children’s life. Based on these conclusions I have decided to leave the band. It has been the best ten years of my life, a wonderful experience.

"It is hard to write this without getting sentimental. I will miss you all. I do not feel that I am fleeing a sinking ship – the current line-up in Tristania is the strongest ever in my opinion – the new album is a killer and with Kjetil and Gyri aboard – the band seems to have the motivation for serious touring to get the music out to stages all over the world. I want to wish Tristania the best of luck in the future. Thank you all for your patience and your dedication and for the good times. Take care."

Against The Plagues Working On New Album

Chicago based multinational extreme metal act Against the Plagues has begun working on new songs for an as-yet-untitled second album. Drummer Varyen Chylinski commented on the new album:

"I am very excited to announce that we are currently working with the songs for new album! We have 6 songs almost finished and another 2 in progress. Next month we will start recording them as a pre-production material and as soon as we have them ready we will expose some of them on our website. We are working with new music in our practice room in Chicago and as I see after several rehearsals, new songs are much more faster and extreme than the previous album 'Decoding the Mainframe.'

Nightfall Posts "Ambassador Of Mass" Video

Greek act Nightfall has launched the video for the song "Ambassador Of Mass," which can be viewed after the jump. Nightfall singer Efthimis Karadimas comments the clip: "The story depicted is inspired by the Greco-Persian wars in the 5th century BC. The video is purely based on the ancient technique of Shadow Puppet Theatre evolved and widely used in different areas of the world eons ago. Every character, ship, map, etc you see in it has been built from scratch especially for that motion clip. The video has been directed by Achilleas Gatsopoulos, a prominent master of visual arts, based in the city of Berlin. I am sure you haven't seen anything similar around!"

Comments director Achilleas Gatsopoulos: "After our initial talks and meetings with Efthimis, we decided to approach the video in a challenging and unconventional way. We chose to use shadow puppetry and push its boundaries through modern technology in order to create something really unique; something that could best convey the epic scale of our story. Considerable research ensued, and the storyline was constructed according to the structure and lyrics of the song, sprinkled with a touch of mythology, while staying true to the actual historical facts. The design and construction of the puppets were done in collaboration with fine artist Hara Kolaiti, referencing on the one hand the Ancient Greek vases' depictions of greek warriors of the time, and on the other, the numerous detailed reliefs of Xerxes and his warriors in Persepolis.

"In total, more than thirty meticulously detailed puppets and backgrounds were created for the video. These were shot one by one and then composited into scenes digitally. The aim was to take Shadow Puppetry as a traditional medium, and explore its cinematic potential. Thus, scenes were created both in two dimensional space, as well as in three dimensional epic camera shots. The result is a truly original and unconventional music video that best complements Efthimis' musical vision." More...
