Panic Are Back Together And Recording EP

While playing a reunion show at last year's Arnhem Hardcore Meeting, Boston hardcore outfit Panic apparently had a good time and are now writing material for a new CDep/7". The current line-up includes Azy, Gibby, Masek, Damian, and new drummer, Q. According to Azy, "I just want to make clear that we are back out of a desire to shred, not because we have some self-important agenda or egos that need feeding..." The group will record five new songs this winter, and the release will hit streets via Reflections Records in early-2006.

Oct. 14 Mikkeli - Club Zic Zac
Oct. 26 Lahti - Torvi (with Withering)

But we promise that it will serve you all the old tricks mixed with some new elements, twists and turns. Time will tell, hope you can wait until then. And by the way we have already booked the Fantom studio for the next spring where the recording of our third strike will take place. More updates will follow..."

The Ocean Sign With Metal Blade Records

The Ocean is a phenomenal, very unique band that features influences from various styles of hard and also more mellow music. They are famous for their hardcore eruptions as well as their flowing soundscapes that are somewhat reminiscent of American pioneers Neurosis. But in the end they are simply The Ocean, a band that is well known in the German underground, not only for their albums, but also for their excessive live shows.

“It´s great to have The Ocean on the label”, comments Andreas R. of Metal Blade Europe. “This band is so talented – they transport a wide array of emotions through their incredible music. You can´t be more honest as an artist than The Ocean are.”

The Ocean guitarist Robin Staps comments: "After talking to various labels over the course of the past months, we're happy to finally join forces with one of the most important labels for heavy music out there. Out of all the parties we've been talking to, Metal Blade seemed to be the most reasonable about what they can do for us and how they will go about doing it."

After more than a year in the making, their upcoming record "Aeolian", a sequel to 2004's highly acclaimed "Fluxion", is in its final stages of production.

“All the instrumental and vocal tracks have been layed down and we are almost finished with the mix. We have taken a multiple-singer approach this time, with the aim of finding the perfect voice for every part. The result is a number of guest appearances, including Tomas Hallbom of Breach, Nate Newton of Converge/Old Man Gloom and Sean Ingram of Coalesce. Altogether there are 6 singers featured on the album, covering the widest possible range of aggressive vocals, from deep howls to high-pitched shrieking, with our mainman Meta at the low end and laptopist Nico at the high end of the vocal spectrum.”

“Aeolian” will be released on the 25th of November in Germany and on the 28th of November in the rest of Europe. More album details will be revealed soon.

Ensiferum Replaces Drummer

Ensiferum has posted this message on their website regarding the change of drummers:

"As some of you may have already noticed, there's been a new man behind the drums at the live concerts during the past six months. Janne Parviainen has been substituting for Oliver Fokin and is now a steady member. The main reason for this change in the band was that there were too many differences of interests.

"On a happier note, Metal Hammer magazine's website has included us to it's "Meet & Greet" section, which let's the readers and fans ask questions directly to the band via message board.

Vinnie Paul Will Never Be At Peace w/ Dimes Death

The December 2005 issue of Guitar World magazine (web site) contains an exclusive, in-depth interview with former PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott. In the 10-page cover story (view cover here), Vinnie speaks for the first time about Dimebag's murder, the possibility of a PANTERA reunion prior to Dimebag's death, Vinnie's future plans as a musician, and his favorite memories of Dimebag, among many other topics. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

Guitar World: Dime had a reputation for hard living and hard drinking, but what's less known is that he had a serious side and could be remarkably focused. What are some instances in which you saw this side of him?

Vinnie Paul: "Throughout his career, he was always really focused on everything. Toward the end, about a year before all this happened, he really started to develop the business side of himself. He was so proud of his new line of guitars with Dean Guitars and his new amp with Krank Amplification. He probably took that stuff more seriously than anything. He didn't want his name on a piece of shit. He wanted it to be on something that was special, so when somebody got it, they went, 'Wow, this is the best guitar I've ever picked up,' or this is the most kick-ass sounding amp I've ever played.' Dime was all over it with both companies, and that was something I was so proud of him for.

"Some people have this misconception that the dude was loaded 24/7, but he wasn't. He'd do it when he felt like he needed to do it, and then he would back off for two or three days. In truth, we never really did that much drinking before we went onstage. We'd do two or three shots, just enough to get loosened up, and then mayne a couple more while we were playing. It was when we were done playing, after we'd kick everybody's fucking ass and given them everything they came for, that's when the booze would really start to flow. That's when it was time to take the roof off the fucking place."

Guitar World: In 1996, PANTERA released their darkest and most underrated album, "The Great Southern Trendkill". What's the story behind that album?

Vinnie Paul: "That was the most difficult record we ever made. We weren't falling apart, but the band was starting to go in different directions. Philip [Anselmo, PANTERA vocalist] had some well-publicized personal issues, and that made for a really dark record. At the same time, LIMP BIZKIT was blowing up and rap metal was coming in. There was a whole new scene, and people were like, 'What's PANTERA gonna do? Are they gonna do rap metal, too?' We just wanted to make the ultimate, abrasive album the industry's ever gotten. That was our response. It was the first record we made that declined in sales, but it's a platinum record today, so you can't say it wasn't successful. When it came out then, it was probably our most misunderstood record, but today I see posts on the Internet all the time saying, ''Trendkill' is my favorite album. Goddamn, that record broke the mold.' Well, too bad it took you nine fucking years to realize what we were trying to accomplish at the time! [laughs]"

Guitar World: Tell me about "Reinventing the Steel", which turned out to be the final PANTERA album.

Vinnie Paul: "I think that, next to 'Vulgar', that's probably the best record we made. By the time we made it, in 2000, everything had totally changed and music was — and still is — in a total shambles. So we wanted to make a straightforward, anthemic metal record. We wanted to keep the songs as fresh as we could, with old-school roots and new-school traits, and I think we did a really good job on it. I mean, 'Revolution Is My Name' is probably one of the best songs we ever wrote. The guitar riffs and parts Dime came up with are fucking phenomenal. There's probably five songs in that one song!"

Guitar World: PANTERA's breakup was instigated in part by the events of 9/11. Explain what happened.

Vinnie Paul: "That was pretty insane. We flew to Ireland out of JFK [International Airport] just 10 to 12 hours before that happened, man. We landed, got off the plane and people had all these terrible looks on their faces and we didn't know what the hell was going on. We just got this really weird vibe. We just felt that the best thing for us to do was cancel our European Tattoo the Earth tour with SLAYER and go home. We didn't know who was going to get attacked next. We were stranded there for, like, 10 days, and when we finally got back to Dallas, we just said, 'Hey, let's take a little break from this.' "

Guitar World: A lot of people in the metal community had been hoping PANTERA would get back together one day.

Vinnie Paul: "Let's make this clear once and for all: for any fan out there that believed any of the bullshit said by certain people, there never was going to be a PANTERA reunion, ever. If you were married to somebody for 15 or 16 years and they treated you the way we got treated, you don't go back to them, and we weren't going to do that. When we put DAMAGEPLAN together, we were done with PANTERA, but we wanted to respect the fans that loved the band. We felt as bad for them as we felt for ourselves, but we had nothing to do with it going sideways, and we gave every effort we could to keep it together."

Guitar World: Dime always insisted that DAMAGEPLAN was the real deal and not just a side project.

Vinnie Paul: "Damn straight. It was hard to let go of PANTERA and say, 'That's it. I'm done with this. I'm moving on.' Shit, that was the only life we'd ever known. After suffering what I call the defeat of PANTERA, being knocked down to nothing and having to get back up and go again when you're not 19 or 20 years old is one hell of a fucking effort, and me and Dime put everything into DAMAGEPLAN. And trust me, it took everything we had, and we dug as deep as we could. We were going for it and nothing was gonna stop us from getting there. It was just like in the early days.

"Before all of this happened, we'd already written and recorded for the second DAMAGEPLAN record. From where I stood, it looked to me like our first record, 'New Found Power', was our 'Cowboys from Hell', and the second record was gonna be our 'Vulgar Display of Power' — the record that pushed us over the top and put us on the same plateau as PANTERA. And that's what people wanted from us. Our record label was 100 percent behind us, but unfortunately we never got to see the light at the end of the tunnel, because of what happened."

Guitar World: Will those DAMAGEPLAN demos ever see the light of day?

Vinnie Paul: "Right now I'm still too flipped out to even go in the studio. I've been down there a time or two and it just wigs me completely out. But I guarantee you at some point I will do something with those tracks. Either I'll have some of Dime's favorite singers sing on 'em and turn them into jams, or maybe Pat [Lachman, DAMAGEPLAN vocalist] will sing on them and it'll be 'Damageplan II'. I don't know yet. Right now they're magic that hopefully someday everybody will get to hear, and as long I'm around, I think eventually they will get heard."

Guitar World: What else can you tell us about the night Dime was killed?

Vinnie Paul: "All I want to say right now is that things like this happen to people and sometimes, after six or eight months go by, people begin to talk and they learn more about what happened. I have a hard time believing that some nut-job just shot the best friend that I ever had for no reason. So I'd like to spread the message to anybody out there, that if you know or hear anything about it, please contact the authorities and let 'em know what you know. I just believe that there's something else out there that motivated this guy to do this. And if there is, I hope they get to the bottom of it, 'cause it's something that should've never, ever happened. It's ruined my life and it's taken away so much joy and happiness from so many people. I guess what I'm trying to find is an answer for why this happened. There has to be an answer somewhere, and I hope it comes out someday. I'll leave it at that.

"We also lost another great brother and a great friend, Mayhem [Jeffrey Thompson, bodyguard], that night. He and Dime were really close, and I know wherever they are they're together still. Also I want to send my condolences and heartfelt sorrow to the families and friends of the other two victims, Nathan Bray and Erin Halk.

"I know that Dime will live on forever, though, just like Jimi Hendrix and Randy Rhoads. It just happened way too goddamned soon. The music we made together will be around forever, but the thing that kills me is that we'll never get to do it again. We had so much more that we were gonna put out, and I know that, wherever he is, Dime's real dissatisfied that he didn't get to finish his mission."

Guitar World: Do you know what you plan to do next as a musician?

Vinnie Paul: "I've got to find the right situation. I'm not going to jump into anything, though, because I'm only just now getting to where I can wake up in the morning and just fucking breathe without having a million thoughts going through my mind. By no means will I ever be at peace with what happened, but at least I'm getting to where I can deal with it."

Devildriver Will Be Direct Support For Gwar

DEVILDRIVER will be direct support to GWAR on their upcoming North American tour that will also feature A DOZEN FURIES and MENSREA. Beginning on October 7 in Sayreville, NJ and running through November 11 in Seattle, WA, the tour will traverse the United States playing storied venues, including the Palladium in Worcester, MA, the House of Blues in Chicago and Harpo's in Detroit.

"Being on the road is where we like to be," says lead singer Dez Fafara. "Out there, meeting our fans and playing the heaviest music we can is our idea of a good time, and that we get to do this with one of our favorite bands in GWAR is just plain awesome."

DEVILDRIVER is touring in support of their sophomore album, "The Fury of Our Maker's Hand", which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseeker's chart. The band will ramp up for the tour with four warm-up shows from September 25 – October 5. The band most recently toured the states as part of the inaugural Sound of the Underground tour with CLUTCH, LAMB OF GOD and labelmates CHIMAIRA and OPETH. Says Fafara, "Sounds was a summer-long barbecue. The bands were fun and the fans were great."

Released on June 28, "The Fury of Our Maker’s Hand" debuted at No. 117 on Billboard's Top 200 album charts and No. 17 on the Top Hard Rock chart. Disturbed: New Bassist Still To Pay Dues

DISTURBED singer David Draiman and guitarist Dan Donegan have posted separate statements on the group's official web site addressing fan concerns over the fact that the band's new bassist, John Moyer (ex-THE UNION UNDERGROUND), is not being prominently featured in the group's latest video, on the new CD cover or in promotional photos. Their statements follow:

David Draiman (posting dated August 28, 2005): "Many people have inquired as to why John is not seen prevalently in the video or in certain press items. Allow me to explain.

"First and foremost, there is nothing to worry about. We are very happy with John, and all is going exceptionally well. We are all getting along together great, and things are really beginning to jell live.

"John has a long road to travel on before he gets to the point where is a 'full member' of the band. Please understand, we hold him in the highest regard, but until he has withstood several tests of time and has paid some dues with us, he will have a lesser role than the three remaining founding members. We are just being careful, much like someone getting out of a bad relationship and starting anew. We're going to have to 'date for awhile before we put the ring on his finger.' We are excited to have him with us, and look forward to him growing into what we all hope he will become. These things take time. We could not be more proud of his work with us thus far and look forward to a bright future for him in the DISTURBED family.

"I hope that explains some things."

Dan Donegan (posting dated September 17, 2005): "For those of you who have an issue with the decisions we make in this band, that's too bad. [Neither] us nor John have any issues and that is all that matters. We shouldn't have to defend ourselves on how this band operates. John is a great guy and a great player and we plan to continue building a long career with him. We are more open to our fans than any band I know. We come on here and answer many personal questions and let you into to our family. Who else does that? Some of you just feel that it isn't enough. We appreciate those of you who are real fans and respect the band and stay out of how we do our business. Find something new to talk about. This is how it is, so deal with it. Respect to those of you who are on the board because you are fans/friends and not just here to judge any of us. We have a new CD coming out this Tuesday [Sept. 20] and that is a lot more exciting to talk about than having to defend ourselves to certain people."

Satyricon To Begin Recording New Album

Satyricon have posted the following album update at their official website:

"Sorry for not keeping touch lately, but we've been busy working! We are in middle of pre-production for our new album and we will start recording October 17th in Puk Studio in Denmark where we did most of "Volcano". We aim to finish the album in January followed by a late spring release. This means we should be ready to do a big festival run throughout the summer and hit the clubs in the fall. Things change and they can change fast too in this industry, but this is what we plan to do as it looks now. We'll keep you posted about this and other projects we are working on too, throughout the fall."

Second Roadrunner All-Star Track Available

The second track from the Roadrunner United All-Star Sessions is now available.

The track, titled "The End", for which a video has also been shot, comes from captain Dino Cazares (ex-Fear Factory) and can be found here.

Following is Dino's introduction for the song:

"This song was conceived in 2001 in Germany backstage in a dressing room at a club. My guitar was plugged into a practice amp, listening through my headphones. I was still on tour with Fear Factory, but writing songs for another project because I knew the breakup was inevitable. And this is what I was feeling at the time.

I sent the demo over to Rhys Fulber (producer of Demanufacture and Obsolete). He re-wrote the drum programming and added keyboards and samples. Jason "Gong" Jones sang the original version which landed him the gig as the second vocalist for Drowning Pool.

In 2005 Monte Connor (A&R, Roadrunner) called me and asked if I'd be a team captain (Team Cazares) for the Roadrunner United All Stars. I was honored. He also asked if I would re-record the song. I was hesitant at first because it's more mellow than my usual work, and it's unique because it's not something I would normally write. Monte saw the bigger picture for the song, and him being a good friend I trusted his judgement. So I decided to re-record it.

Roy Mayorga (ex-Soulfly) on drums.
Nadja Peulen (ex-Coal Chamber) on bass.
Logan Mader (ex-Machine Head, Soulfly), guitar harmonics.
Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly) on keyboards, programming.

Now that the music was recorded, picking the singer was the hard part. Monte Conner asked what I thought of Matt Heafy possibly singing on this track. My response was, Matt who? I had the Trivium CD, it's killer, but I wasn't familiar with Matt himself, him being a new kid on the block and me being a veteran. I sent Matt the track and he just felt it. He said he had always wanted to sing a song like this. After he recorded the vocals, he sent Monte and me the song. I didn't know what to expect, after all he's only 19. I played the track and my jaw dropped. I was blown away by this kid's talent. Not only can he sing brutal but he has an amazing melodic voice...and I'm honored that Roadrunner picked this track to be the first single and the first video. This song cannot be compared to any of my other work because it's totally different, but in itself it's an amazing song.

- Dino Cazares"
