James Murphy Gives An Update
Guitarist/producer extraordinaire James Murphy (TESTAMENT, DEATH, OBITUARY) has issued the following update:
"Hi everyone. I'm sorry for dropping out. I've been dealing with my grandmother's illness and passing. Several weeks ago she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, quite large and inoperable. She has always been a major part of our family life and an 'anchor,' if you will, always there for me with a place to stay and a meal throughout the ups and downs of my career, not to mention her unconditional love.
"Dealing with the emotional side and logistics of always having at least one family member in the hospital with her... And now with the family handling all her final business... It's been overwhelming and ongoing. Her funeral was last week and I have begun to see the light of day again finally.
"Even with these issues I managed to get more recording for the DEATH tribute [album] done. On the day of my grandmother's funeral, after the services, I made the trip to Tampa to record the singer of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN... And only two days before (one day after she passed) I traveled to Orlando to record the bassist of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN. It was hard for me to focus but I couldn't lose the opportunity to have these two great musicians on 'Within The Mind'. Their performances for Chuck's [Schuldiner] memory transcend the difficult circumstances I recorded them under.
"I also want to take a moment to express my sadness about the passing of Piggy [of VOIVOD]. I have no words that haven't already been spoken more eloquently than I can manage at this moment. I was given the first two albums as a gift and when number three, 'Killing Technology', came out I was at the store the day it was released. Some months later I stood outside at Janis Landing in St. Petersburg to see the tour and buy the T-shirt. Piggy was, and is, an inspiration."
Ozzfest 2005 Finale To Raise Funds For Hurricane
For the final night of this summer's Ozzfest, the tour and promoter have joined forces with the Red Cross to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Volunteers from the Red Cross will be on hand accepting cash donations at this Sunday's (September 4) show at the Sound Advice Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, Florida.
"Florida is a state which has been affected over the years by hurricane devastation and we're hoping that everyone can open their hearts and help their neighbors throughout the Gulf Coast," said Ozzfest organizers.
For those not in attendance, donations can also be made via the Red Cross web site (www.redcross.org).

The Legion Recording New Album, Give Update
Swedish black/death metallers THE LEGION, featuring current MARDUK drummer Emil Dragutinovic, have posted the following message on their official web site:
"The progress of our new album is coming along fine and we're in the middle of recording the last parts. The vocals on this recording are being done, mainly by bassist Lars [bass] and some additional parts by Emil and David [guitar]. We are still not certain who's going to handle the vocals in the future so if you're interested in trying out for us, please send us a mail with some kind of sample where we can hear you scream."
To facilitate the vocalist-search process, THE LEGION have made available a pre-production sample of a new song called "Virtue of Sin". "On this teaser, which was recorded in our rehearsal room, the vocals are executed by Lars and David," the band write. "[Keep] in mind that this is not representative for the final outcome of the upcoming album."
THE LEGION's debut album, "Unseen To Creation", was released in October 2003 through France's Listenable Records. The CD, which was recorded at Abyss Studios with producer Tommy T?gtgren, features "ten songs of complex and eclectic black/death metal, ranging in style from MORBID ANGEL to SETHERIAL." The cover art was done by Kris Verwimp, who has previously worked with MARDUK, ABSU, VELONNIC SIN, and IMMORTAL, among others.

Voivod Family & Friends Say Final Goodbye To Piggy
Former VOIVOD members Jean-Yves Theriault (a.k.a. Blacky) and Eric Forrest were among the attendees at the funeral services for VOIVOD guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour, who died last Friday (Aug. 26) in a Montreal hospital from complications of advanced colon cancer. The services were held Thursday morning (September 1) in Jonquière, Quebec and were capped off by a symbolic guitar-burning, with the remnants of the guitar being placed in the Sable river.
As previously reported, surviving VOIVOD members — singer Denis "Snake" Belanger, bassist Jason Newsted (ex-METALLICA) and drummer Michel "Away" Langevin — will return to the recording studio in late September to resume work on their 14th album, tentatively due in early 2006 via The End Records.
Only hours before he slipped into a coma last week due to complications from colon cancer, D'Amour gave Langevin instructions to go to the guitarist's personal computer and lift the final guitar tracks Piggy had been working on for the upcoming CD. According to Snake, the album will be "the definitive VOIVOD" effort. "I am sure that Piggy would trust us to complete the project as a tribute to him."
Wicked Wisdom Frontwoman Talks About Ozzfest
WICKED WISDOM frontwoman Jada Pinkett Smith recently spoke to TCPalm.com about her band's participation in this year's Ozzfest. A few excerpts from the chat follow:
On singing screaming about dark things in a heavy metal band:
"For me it's so healthy, because there's so many things that I want to say that aren't politically correct on the red carpet or what have you.
"I feel like, that's how we all become kind of sick, physically sick and mentally unbalanced, when we're not allowed to be our complete selves.
"Here in this music, I get to be ugly. The uglier the better. And for me, that's so refreshing and so liberating.
"People want to hear real stuff; people aren't afraid to feel angry, or sad, or even to feel joy. This is just an outlet for people to cut loose in a way that our society tells you is not correct."
On her foray into music:
"I guess you could call me an old-school metalhead. I was introduced to OZZY OSBOURNE and LED ZEPPELIN by my uncle, and my mother was a big Who fan. In my house, we had real eclectic musical tastes between jazz, rock and R&B. We listened to everything — even to this day."
On how WICKED WISDOM came together:
"It was always something that I was really interested in doing, and just never really knew how to approach it. It just got to a point where I was like, 'You know what, Jada? Life is moving, and you only have this life to live, so let's get it going.' So I hooked up with Pocket, and we started to grow a sound and a band."
On being stung but not surprised by Ozzfest fans' early criticism about WICKED WISDOM's addition to the bill:
"Any area you tread in, you're going to catch it. That's just part of it. I don't really look at that as something to stop me, or something to really consider.
"At the end of the day, you're going to have people that dig it and people that don't. But no matter what, we still gotta do us, you know?"

First Roadrunner United Sample Track Available
The following message has been posted at RoadrunnerRecords.com:
We've been talking about it all week, and now it's here, the first track from the upcoming Roadrunner United The All Star Sessions release (coming October 11). The song "The Dagger" (unmastered) is now available for download in our MUSIC section.
Go ahead and download, and rather than us tell you about the track and more on the release, read the words below from the writer of "The Dagger" (and Captain of the team that recorded the song), Machine Head's Robert Flynn:
"Hey Fuckers!
"Greetings from Derka Derkastan! And as we say there, "Fuck...derk, derk, allah...sherpa, sherpa...Muhamed jihad" (Yes, I've been watching WAY too much "Team America"). Just got back from doing a bit of press for the Roadrunner United album. RR flew me down to LA for a couple of days, and then to London, England to do some international press. As I'm sure most of you have read or heard by now, Roadrunner have decided to take on the seemingly ridiculous challenge of gathering, organizing and managing 60 musicians for a giant collaborative metal all-star effort.
"Brainchild of Senior VP of A&R (and longtime Machine Head champion) Monte Conner, these all-star sessions would follow a few basic "rules". Roadrunner would choose four "Captains", each Captain would write 4 songs, then assemble a "band" for each song comprised of other RR artists, past and/or present, currently on or off the label. Each Captain would record the 4 songs they had written with their chosen group, and then choose four different singers, one for each song.

Novembers Doom Cancel European Tour
Chicago doomsters Novembers Doom have posted the following message on their official web site:
"It is with much sadness, and genuine regret, that we, Novembers Doom, must announce a cancelation for our upcoming European performances this October. While making our final arrangements for travel, we have encountered many logistic and legal setbacks, including (but not limited to) crossing European borders with the proper paperwork and permits in time to allow us entry to perform the scheduled dates. Other business-related issues have come to our attention as well, making this trip difficult, and not as cost-effective as originally planned. We felt it was ideal to make the decision now, and work towards a proper tour in 2006, than cancel this trip at the last moment, and disappoint anyone that would come to see us perform. We regret not being able to appear at the ProgPower Festival in the Netherlands on October 1st, the Dutch Day of Doom IV on October 2nd, and the several shows booked in the U.K. for that week. We strongly apologize to the organizers of these shows, as well to the fans, and we do promise you, we are doing everything in our means to reschedule these dates, and perform in Europe for you in 2006.
"Novembers Doom will however complete our obligations to perform at the Day of the Equinox festival in Toronto Canada, on October 14th, 2005.
"We appreciate all your understanding, and continued support, and to those who will be disappointed in this, we promise to make it up to you very soon."
