Bloodbath Looking For New Singer

Bloodbath have posted the following message on their website since Peter Tägtgren left the band due to conflicting schedules with Hypocrisy:

"Bloodbath is looking for a new singer that will equal or outdo the two former singers, yes you read that right, so (hint hint), some of you might wanna stop reading here already. Anyways, we're certain a new death metal god is lurking out there as even Mike Åkerfeldt and Peter Tägtgren started out somewhere, being unknown and raw talent. We got a number of very strict rules and high demands and if you dont qualify all of these, then please dont bother applying, thank you very much.

Dimmu Borgir Turn Down Tour With Korn

Dimmu Borgir have posted the following news at their official website:

"Short news bulletin from the Dimmu camp, Silenoz told me that the "Stormblåst 2005" street date is November 7, 2005. The new CD will contain a shitload of extras for the price of a regular CD. They are also planning to record a video from the Stormblåst 2005 release together with Patrick Ullaeus and Revolver Film Comp.

Shagrath is busy working on his band "Chrome Division" together with Lex Icon of Covenant, Luna of Ashes To Ashes, Eddie Guz of The Carburetors, and Ricky Black. They are currently working and recording material for their debut album. Their new website will be up and running shortly with more info on the band.

Silenoz is working on his project "Insidious Disease" and a demo will be ready shortly. They have 12-13 songs ready and they will put up a strong demo just in case a record company should give them an offer.

There will be no live performances for the rest of the year after Dimmu Borgir turned down the offer of going on tour with Korn in Scandinavia. Dimmu Borgir hope to start working on the new album in October 2005."

The Rise of Art-Metal

Jon Caramanica has written a surprisingly excellent article in the New York Times about the shift in metal and the rise of "art metal" and "post metal," the latter label I dislike more than the first. Here's an except to get you started:

You might not have known it from looking at the audience, but when the Chicago instrumental band Pelican performed at the Knitting Factory in late July, it was playing metal.

Instead of long hair and all-black outfits, the crowd was displaying the trappings of brainy, slightly nerdy indie rock. Young men wore artistically cropped hair and tight-legged jeans, and there was even a smattering of young women in librarian glasses and worn-out Chuck Taylor sneakers.

This is not your older brother's metal crowd. "I've been wearing my Def Leppard T-shirt on tour recently," said Laurent Lebec, a guitarist in Pelican and a fan of that archteypal 1980's metal band. "People come up to me and ask, 'Is that a joke?' I have to tell them that I don't wear T-shirts as a joke."

The particularly dark and aggressive strain of rock called heavy metal has been around for more than three decades. In that time, it has spawned a range of offshoots, but none have been as unlikely as the recent wave of bands using metal as a jumping-off point for a range of experimental styles, dabbling in free jazz, minimalist post-rock, noise and even modern classical music.

This is art-metal, a curious scene populated by a new generation of metal acolytes onstage and younger fans often unfamiliar with metal's headbanger heritage.

"Metal in general has long been unjustly maligned as solely the province of knuckle-dragging meatheads," said Aaron Turner, a founder of the influential Hydra Head Records, which has released three CD's by Pelican, including, recently, "The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw." "That said, there's never been a group of musicians like there is now, who are helping to advance the form."

Alice Cooper Moves On From Britney To Paris

Jude Cole of 'Extra' caught up with Alice Cooper for a Q&A and asked the rocker what he'll be doing on his new tour to shock people. "I don't think you do," Cooper responded. "I think what you do now is you entertain the audience, and you use shock tactics. Britney was pregnant, so we weren't going to cut Britney's head off again. We did that last year, you know. So who walks right into our sights? Well, Paris Hilton. And is anybody not tired of seeing these divas with these little Chihuahuas in their purses? I said, 'What would happen if the Chihuahua went for her throat?' So we do a song called 'Sunset Babies All Got Rabies.' She's on the floor beating this dog, and the audience is dying laughing because everyone wants to see that." You can check out the complete transcript or watch the video here.
