"Okay, so the tally is this - 7 sessions averaging 5 hours = 35 hours of tracking. Amazing drum and bass tones, Angelo and Rob really became the quintessential rhythm section for this kind of music. What is that? Speed? Thrash? Who cares? It is what it is. The boys are powerful. Gear? Angelo with a Rickenbacker 4001 fitted with a P-J pickup set through an Ampeg SVT3. What else you gotta know? Rob with a 5 piece Pacific/DW kit (single kick with cheater pedal to insure exact tone) with a variety of Zildjian and Paiste cymbals. Simply Monstrous performance and tone." More...

Vengeful Streaming Entire New Album Online

Montreal based death metal band Vengeful has issued the following update about streaming their entire new album "The Omnipresent Curse" online:

"Well here it is deatheads!!! The revamped look of our website has arrived and to celebrate this virtual event we want to inform you that The Omnipresent Curse is availble for streaming in it's entirety on our myspace page until August 16th. Go listen to it and drop us a line or two to let us know what you think. Mp3's aren't the best way to experience a band but it'll give you a good idea of the trip that's in store for those who will purchase a physical copy when the album is out. We believe that if you like your death metal with no breakdowns, no keyboards, no clean vocals, no proggy escapades with a bit of a doomy/sludgy feel you will enjoy this album. Our buddy Hugues Deslauriers (Augury, Clearwater Deathblow) has once again outdone himself mixing-wise on this one. The final result is just devastating!!!

"Until then drop something listen to The Omnipresent Curse as much as needed and keep an ear out for Nergal's baby!!!!...."

Methods Of Mayhem Signs To Loud & Proud

Tommy Lee's other band, Methods of Mayhem has signed a record deal with Loud & Proud, the new Roadrunner Records imprint. The band is currently finishing album production with producer Scott Humphrey (Rob Zombie, Nine Inch Nails, Motley Crüe). The new album will be Methods of Mayhem’s first release since their 1999 self-titled debut. The album is due out worldwide in early 2010.

Lee exclaimed, “I’m so f@&*ing pumped!! I’ve signed with my friends at Loud & Proud / Roadrunner…what a perfect home for my second Methods of Mayhem record. We’re about to do what no team has ever done before. Buckle up and hang on kids!”

“Some artists put it on cruise control once they achieve success. And then there are rock stars like Tommy Lee. He works hard, plays hard and always looks to challenge himself and his audience. His second Methods of Mayhem record is going to shake things up once again.” says Tom Lipsky, President of Loud & Proud Records.

Methods of Mayhem broke onto the scene in 1999 with their self-titled debut, which went on to become RIAA Gold certified. The album featured Snoop Dog, Kid Rock and Fred Durst among others. The band was a main force of Ozzfest 2000.

Lee is currently headlining Crüefest II with his band Motley Crüe.

Mortification Issues 20th Anniversary Album Update

Steve Rowe of Christian metal band Mortification has issued the following update about releasing a 20th anniversary album:

"I have had the opportunity this month to work with Warren Hammond at Penny Drop Studio mixing the Re-Recorded Mortification Classics for our upcoming 20th Anniversary CD 'Twenty Years In The Underground'. The result is very pleasing. We referenced some more modern Death Metal like Amon Amarth to find an up-to-date approach to our Old School Death Metal songs, especially Nocturnal, Grind Planetarium and Impulsation. Hammer Of God and The Majestic Infiltration Of Order (God Rulz) have also been Re-Recorded. Initially I was hesitant to Re-Record what was not broken but the end result sounds killer! The early songs obviously lend themselves well to the the more Brutal Death Metal vocal and Production. I think the Old School Mort fans will be stoked. But you will all need to wait until early next year. The 15 rare Live Tracks are yet to be added to the mix.

"The 20th Anniversary Album will initially be available for pay download in early February next year, hopefully along with The Jesus Rock Band. December/January is make or break time for Rowe Productions. Not only with the 2 planned releases but it is also the time in which I have to pay very high fees to my Accountant. At this stage we do not even have the finances to pay for The Mortification 20th Anniversary mix. But I am hoping we can cover that soon and move on to the next process with these projects."

Dethklok and Mastodon Announce Massive US Tour

This fall, two of the most popular bands in metal will co-headline a 34-city North American tour as the Grammy® Award-winning Mastodon hits the road with Dethklok, the world’s most brutal animated death metal band from Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse. In one of the most highly-anticipated tours of the year, the Adult Swim Presents Dethklok and Mastodon tour will kick off on October 2 in Portland, Ore. and bring mayhem and destruction to local venues throughout the nation. Adding even more layers to this fall’s top metal tour, Oakland’s High On Fire and Converge will open each show. There will be a ticket pre-sale that begins on Tuesday, August 4 at 10:00 AM EST, while the full allotment of tickets will go on sale to the general public starting Friday, August 7. For more information about the tour including the pre-sale ticket password, price ranges and how to order, please visit www.adultswimpresents.com.

As sponsor for the entire tour, Adult Swim will feature "Brütal Legend" gaming stations for fans to experience the videogame first-hand, while a two-minute animated content piece, created by Titmouse, will air during each show. Print ads, AdultSwim.com and on-site materials will also feature the videogame as the tour’s key sponsor. "Brütal Legend" is an epic action game from visionary developer Tim Schafer. Jack Black stars as Eddie Riggs, a legendary roadie summoned to a world of Heavy Metal where mountains are made of amplifiers, killer spiders spin guitar strings and Rock Legends roam the landscape. As Eddie, crush skulls with a battle axe, ravage the road in a super-charged Hot Rod and unleash the power of Rock to reign down fire from the sky – all to save humanity and become a Brütal Legend.

Nathan Explosion, William Murderface, Skwisgaar Swigelf, Toki Wartooth and Pickles – better known as Dethklok – will take to the road in support of the band’s latest CD release from Williams Street Records, "Dethklok: The Dethalbum II," which will be released as both a standard and deluxe edition on September 29 from Williams Street Records. A limited-edition vinyl of the album will also be released at local record shops starting November 24. Bringing the animated band to life on stage each night will be series co-creator and composer Brendon Small along with an all-star band including the legendary Gene Hoglan, Bryan Beller and Mike Keneally. These real life-musicians will perform live while dark-lit and playing underneath a giant projection screen featuring all-new animation and music videos from Dethklok to create a truly unique concert experience.

Sharing the bill with Dethklok on this seven-week tour is Grammy® Award-winning hard icons Mastodon, who are currently touring Europe and the UK with Metallica. The band’s groundbreaking new album Crack The Skye was released on March 24, debuting on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at #11 to overwhelming international critical praise.

Also on the tour is High On Fire. Described as “a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume and sheer heaviness,” High On Fire has forged a style and sound that is both unique and absolutely crushing. The group features vocalist and cult guitar hero Matt Pike, a founding member of the famed underground band SLEEP. Pike was named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of its “New Guitar Gods.”

Also on the tour, Converge will release their anticipated new album "Axe To Fall" on Epitaph on October 20th. The release is the follow up to their highly-acclaimed "No Heroes" album, released on Epitaph in 2006.

Atreyu Announces Release Date Of New Album

The long wait for Atreyu fans is over. The Orange County rock pioneers have completed the follow-up to 2007’s highly acclaimed "Lead Sails Paper Anchor." The album, titled "Congregation of the Damned", produced by Bob Marlette (Airborne, Ozzy Osbourne) and mixed by Rich Costey (Mars Volta, System of A Down, Rage Against the Machine), will be released October 27. A fall co-headlining tour with Hollywood Undead is set to kick off on October 16th at The Pavilion in Lubbock, TX.

“I wrote the line ‘congregation of the damned’ for one of the songs on the album and it got me thinking,” says vocalist Alex Varkatzas. “It kind of feels like in a lot of ways that we, as members of a society, are just gathering around and collectively getting fucked over. When you look at what’s going on in our economy and how other people treat each other, it’s kind of like we’re all just lemmings. We’re lined up blankly staring blindly at nothing and just going along with the flow like a congregation of the damned. So this record really reflects my thoughts and feelings about that in every possible way.”

While Congregation of the Damned addresses some dark, troubling subject matter, creating the album was far from a struggle. The band starting writing new material in January 2009 and by the time they entered Henson Studios in Los Angeles with producer Bob Marlette, they had 25 new songs.

“I think this is the longest our band has ever had laser-like focus on an album,” Varkatzas says. “We were all working together really well and we had a great time in the studio with Bob, who we called BeelzeBob. He’s this jovial cigar-smoking, goatee-sporting dude from Nebraska, and he really helped us fine tune the material and nail our best performances.”

While Congregation of the Damned features some of the band’s heaviest riffs ever on tracks like “You Were the King, Now You’re Unconscious” and “Bleeding Is A Luxury,” it also contains some of truly delicate and sentimental moments, including piano ballad “Wait For You.”

“That one’s just a beautiful song, and if you don’t like it, you don’t have a heart,” Varkatzas says. “I’d say that this album is a mix of everything we’ve ever done. For every song that’s more melodic or rock-driven there’s a total shitkicker, and I think that’s what makes us a well-rounded band.”

Atreyu will kick off a fall co-headlining tour with Hollywood Undead and will remain on the road throughout most of 2010.

“The new set is gonna feature a lot of songs from ‘Congregation’ plus a bunch of other stuff,” Varkatzas says. “We’re just really happy with the album and we can’t wait to play it for people live.”

Muslim Punk On The Rise

News21 wrote an interesting article about the rise of Muslim punk rock bands across the United States. They play a style of punk called Taqwacore, taqwa being the Arabic word for piety. Far from being pious in the way Americans understand it, these guys take a more personal rather than public display of their practice.

"With a rebellious attitude and unabashed criticism of both East and West, Muslim punk highlights the breadth of Islamic practice and piety. For this colorful crew, donning patchwork jackets and taking slow drags from hookah pipes, religion is more personal than institutional or dogmatic.

"For the most part, the bands drink and smoke, in excess, despite Islam’s prohibition of the two. When driving from coast to coast on tour, they’re not stopping to break out prayer mats for the obligatory five-times-a-day salat.

"But just because they aren’t doing Islamic practice in the traditional way, doesn’t mean they don’t still consider themselves religious Muslims."

Tales From The Pit: Ravage Stops Moshing Kegs

We've been talking to bands around the world to get their best pit stories. This week's comes from Al, vocalist for Metal Blade band Ravage.

"Ravage was playing a thrash/ speed metal fest recently featuring Bonded By Blood, and some other touring and local bands at a place we call 'The Metal Hall' just outside of Boston - which was basically a glorified kegger party in a room with a stage. It ended up raining a lot before the show went on - and outside the hall is an unpaved road and industrial yard, so the crowd tracked a lot of mud onto the floor when they came in and the floor of the place became a slippery, muddy mess. When the bands went on, the pit became insane and people were sliding around like crazy, so it was a wonder no one got seriously hurt. The walls were padded with a lot of sound foam, so that probably helped.

"Toward the end of the show I was standing in the very back and filming the bands on a hand-held camera. All the kegs had been drained and a lot of people were completely blasted. I was standing next to the empty kegs and one particularly sloshed guy came up to me and slurred, "We need to inject a little CHAOS into this party!" He proceeded to pick one of the empty beer kegs up over his head and he tried to bring it down directly on the head of some little guy standing next to me. When I realized what he was doing, I grabbed his arm and was able to stop him from completely crushing the guy's skull (the shocked little guy escaped with just a glancing blow). I grabbed the keg from the crazy guy, put it down and pushed him back into the ongoing circle pit, where I thought he at least wouldn't be able to murder anyone. A few minutes pass and I'm still filming, not totally paying attention to the crowd, and from out of nowhere the same crazy guy comes back, grabs an empty keg from behind me and bowls it into the circle pit where it took down at least two unsuspecting moshers who fell backward onto the slippery floor and were covered in mud and beer. That was one of the weirdest things I've ever seen someone do in a pit."

Stay tuned for next week when we'll read about knocking out AFI vocalist Davey Havoc.
