Will Of The Ancients Issues Road Report

Will of the Ancients has issued the following road report from their current tour alongside Wolven Ancestry:

"Hey folks!

"So today is day 7 of the tour with Wolven Ancestry. We've pretty much finished the first leg of the tour which was North Bay-Sudbury-Montreal-Quebec City. Had a bit of a slow start with North Bay, but things have been picking up nicely since then! Sudbury was kickass, and Montreal and Quebec really surprised us seeing as we had only been to Montreal once before. People seemed really receptive to us! Stayed at the infamous Steven Henry's place in Montreal, met up with a few friends there too. Quebec was good too, thanks to the great sound and people getting into the show. We had a day off between Quebec City and the Fredericton show last night, so we stayed with our good friends Dave and Victoria (and their adorable children and pets). Lots of campfire, partying, shenanigans and almost raw meat being ripped apart! Thanks Dave & Victoria!! The Fredericton show was surprisingly good! We certainly didn't expect the kind of reception we got, but it seems that the people who were there were very open to stuff other than the core-ish stuff that was supposed to be the theme of the show.

"Tonight we're heading to Halifax and we hear it's gonna be one of the big shows on this tour so we're really looking forward to it! The limited edition tour shirts have been selling well and we're pretty sure will sell out by the end of the tour. In any case, that's about all for now, and we'll make sure to post another update as soon as we can. If you read this, come out to a show!!!!"

Immortal To Blame For Rock City 2009 Cancellation?

Inside sources have claimed that the Norwegian black metal legends Immortal may be to blame for the cancellation of the Romanian metal festival, Rock City Open Air. The source states that the band were paid 25% of their fee in advance as a condition for them to perform. However, although Immortal has pulled out of the show, they are reportedly refusing to pay back the money they owe, which means the festival will not have the money needed to stage the event. Stay tuned for more details on this situation.

Les Paul Passes Away

Famous electric guitar pioneer Les Paul (Lester William Polsfuss) passed away today at the age of 94. Les Paul reportedly died in White Plains, New York from complications related to pneumonia. Born in Wisconsin in 1915, Paul was involved with music and recording his entire life, and performed on dozens of albums and singles. He made his first solid body guitar design in the late 1930's dubbed "The Log," because it was made out of a normal length of wood. Paul was also known for being involved in the invention of multitrack recording and tape delay.

In 2005, a month shy of his 90th birthday, Les Paul was one of 14 people inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. The electric guitar brought Paul international renown as a musician, won him five Grammys, put him on television for eight years with his wife, Mary Ford, and made Gibson Guitar Corp.'s signature Les Paul Standard a guitar of choice for garage bands and virtuosos on five continents.

"In my wildest dreams, I never thought I would see so many people using them," Paul said in a telephone interview prior to his induction. "I owe it to the rock-and-roll players, especially the Jeff Becks, the Paul McCartneys and Jimi Hendrix. All of them were playing a Les Paul guitar."

"[Gibson] laughed at me for 10 years," Paul said. "They called me 'the guy with the broomstick with the pickups on it.' "

More information on Les Paul can be found at his official website.

Doc Holiday Issues Band Update

One of my favorite regional bands, Doc Holiday has issued a band update.

"So we have been busy for months now. After recently coming back to our unusually disrespectful scene (you all should start watching and supporting other bands) and playing a string of shows that pertain to many different audiences, the band is now ready to release our upcoming 2 song demo entitled "For Those Who Pretend". The 2 song demo was recorded by close friend Christopher Hambric of local Northwest Indiana power-trio The Lateral Line...another amazing band you should all stay in tune with.

"After being bombarded with a series of cancellations on our Midwest Tour with the Michigan-based band Know Lyfe, we have decided to release the demo and hit the local areas hard until the weather starts to turn into utter shit. We will then embark into our den and turn to writing the second half of our obnoxious set. We plan to hit certain areas here and there during this time so please, do not count us out. We love to play shows and we have come to realize that ninety percent of our fans love us for our live performance. With that being said, we plan to keep shows slim during the Winter months, leaving us more time to concentrate on not only writing but promoting the few shows we choose to have as well."

The Gates Of Slumber Reveals New Album Cover

The Gates of Slumber has issued the following update about revealing the cover art work and streaming a new song online from their upcoming album:

"Critically acclaimed ‘True Heavy Metal’ band THE GATES OF SLUMBER has completed work on its new studio album Hymns of Blood & Thunder. The album is slated to drop in North America on September 29, 2009 via Rise Above Records.

"Recorded in Chicago’s Semaphore Studios with producer Sanford Parker (Pelican, etc.., THE GATES OF SLUMBER unleashes its holy grail in the formidable Hymns of Blood & Thunder. A mighty document of both powerful songwriting and instrumental skull-crushing, the album is heavy and chillingly bleak; in an almost unrelenting way that hasn't been heard since Judas Priest's heyday (Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin After Sin, etc... Displaying a powerful focus and direction and demonstrating a very compelling emotional range, THE GATES OF SLUMBER have upped its levels of both technique and melody, resulting in an album that is at once frighteningly dark in its effect, tight in its grooves and unrivaled in its sheer power.

"A taste of what Hymns of Blood & Thunder holds in store can be heard now as the new GATES OF SLUMBER song ‘The Bringer of War’ premieres today via Decibel Magazine. The album’s merciless, Frazetta-esque cover artwork can also be viewed at the landing page. Check out all the action now at this location. More...

Interview

An Interview With Augury Vocalist Patrick Loisel

Canadian death metallers Augury released their sophomore album “Fragmentary Evidence” through Nuclear Blast on August 11th. The songs "Aetheral" and "Faith Puppeteers" off the album can be heard at the band's MySpace page. The album features seven guest vocalists from a wide range of other metal bands from Unexpect to Aborted. Augury’s front man Patrick spoke with me about how the band got signed to Nuclear Blast and their upcoming tour plans. Unsurprisingly for a band that includes so many diverse elements in their music, the conversation had a tendency to go off topic into such interesting territories as Indian pop music and Quebec’s separatist movement.
