Unearthing the Metal Underground: Static Abyss
For this weekly column, I typically like to dig into the underground for either undiscovered, new talent or bands that have been around but have remained under the radar in spite of their high-caliber music. Once in a while, however, I’ll spotlight familiar underground faces who have congealed into formidable new entities. Case in point: A couple of members of the pioneering death metal beast Autopsy have banded together to create Static Abyss, a paradoxically primal and majestic expression of death/doom metal. Peaceville Records will release their debut album, “Labyrinth of Veins,” tomorrow on multiple formats. More...
Monasteries Unveils New Music Video
Extreme tech-metal titans Monasteries have released their blistering new single "Lilac," streaming now via Seek & Strike. The track is the first glimpse of new material to be shared since the release of their third EP, "Silence."
Vocalist Josh Davies states: "Monasteries are a band that has always brought forth the most chaotic and erratic songs, with schizophrenic tempo changes that leave you wanting more. ‘Lilac’ continues in that vein and further shows our organic evolution as a band and songwriters.
“After our last EP, 'Silence,' we quickly began planning out what the next step for the band would be, but we didn’t want to just dive into a big album roll-out. Instead, we created the hard-hitting track ‘Lilac,’ which perfectly bridges the gap between Silence and our next full-length effort. It’s for fans of ’The Amygdala Chorus,’ as we stay true to our "sound" continuing to deliver unabashed aggression and heaviness, while keeping you on the edge of your seat. We continue to create, plan and write non-stop and 'Lilac’ is just a tease of what is yet to come. We hope you enjoy it and see you on the road!" More...

Trollfest Shares "Flamingo Libre" Video
Trollfest's flamingo madness is taken to another level today with the release of their new single "Flamingo Libre!" If you were delivered a mysterious package to your door – by a Flamingo of course – would you open it? If there was an ominous drink in that package – would you take a sip, just to see what it tastes like? If your answer to both of those questions is “yes”, then you are in for a wild, wild ride with "Flamingo Libre!"
"Flamingo Libre" is a psychedelic flamingo party, accompanied by deep saxophone, shrill organs and a catchy chorus. With crystal clear mixing and mastering by Jacob Hansen (Hansen Studios), Trollfest’s multi-faceted, colorful Flamingo Overlord comes to life on this track!
Trollfest singer Jostein "Trollmannen" Austvik on "Flamingo Libre":
"Flamingo libre is a fairly unknown substance favored by dictators and mad people alike. No one knows exactly what it is or what it does, but a lot of people have radically changed their outlook on life after contact with it. The song flamingo libre is, to date, the most in depth study of this concoction we have. It is by no means complete, so caution is advised whenever approaching any and all things looking like or otherwise connected to this elixir.
"If Michael Jackson had gotten all his plastic surgery to make concrete balls instead, this would have been his biggest hit." More...

Conjurer Debuts "Rot" Music Video
The future of British metal lies in safe hands with Conjurer, who deliver their breath-taking new single "Rot," taken from their long-awaited new album "Páthos," which will be released 1st July via Nuclear Blast.
"Rot" is a tortured, battered listening experience; a blistering reminder of why the young group has become praised so quickly. That a band can be at once so triumphantly beautiful and gut-punchingly heavy is testament to Conjurer’s quality, and a sure-fire sign of their future longevity at the top of Britain’s heavy music scene.
The band comment: "'Rot' looks at the same topics of anxiety, fear, and depression that feature in 'It Dwells' and flips the perspective/narrative. We wanted to hone in on the most visceral and disgusting parts of our sound when we were writing it and, along with the lyrics, play with the idea of giving that fear and dread a voice. (It's not very nice.)" More...

Interview
Wolf Treads Into The Shadowland
Traditional heavy metal music may have been overshadowed by its more extreme offshoots over the decades but the popularity and spirit is still plain for all to see, with the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne still headlining festivals and selling out venues the world over. Its also being kept alive and well by younger bands performing the tried and true classic sound, with more recent examples being bands such as Toledo Steel, Skull Fist and Night Demon, who have all found degrees of success and praise. One of the most notable bands to play traditional heavy metal at a time when heavier styles were all the rage is Wolf, the Örebro quartet who began life in 1995 and have been continuing to keep the flame burning since.
Recently, Wolf unleashed their ninth studio album, "Shadowland," released by long time label Century Media and the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. To find out more about this follow up to "Feeding The Machine," how the pandemic affected the band and much more, Metal Underground caught up with frontman Niklas Stålvind, who revealed all about the record and more. You can watch it in full below.
Diamond Oz: The new album, "Shadowland" is out now. It was only two years ago that you released "Feeding The Machine," was the pandemic a factor in being able to release two albums close together?
Niklas Stålvind: Yeah it was. It was really bad for "Feeding The Machine" but really good for "Shadowland" because it meant that we could focus on writing and recording. I'd started writing before we went on tour for "Feeding The Machine" but then the pandemic came and we aborted the tour and went home. So there was a couple of songs already but then we decided to just focus on making a new record and forget about everything else.
Oz: I was lucky enough to see you on the "Feeding The Machine" tour with Grand Magus and the songs from that album sounded great live. The "Shadowland" material sounds like "Feeding The Machine" turned way up and with a bit of a darker edge to it. Would you say that's a fair assessment?
Niklas: You're not the only one who has made that assessment but personally, I feel that "Feeding The Machine" was the darkest album I've ever recorded, though that's just my opinion and I think that this one is a lot more positive. I feel that this album is so much more positive and enjoyable. I know that the themes can seem pretty dark and nihilistic but I don't interpret them that way. There was such a pure joy of writing songs with a new lineup and making music. This time I wasn't writing as a kind of therapy like I did with "Feeding The Machine," and digging up all kind of weird and dark things from the past that I needed to come to the surface in order to cope with them. This time it was quite the opposite and also the new members brought in such a positive energy and it's fantastic to write music and hear them do their thing because it's even better than what I imagined as I wrote it.More...
