Månegarm Uncovers The Secrets Of The Ynglinga

Metal music and Scandinavia go together like bread and butter, or peanut butter and jelly. The incredible mythology, the ice cold landscapes, the colourful history, it all combines so well to create the perfect breeding ground for metal. While every Scandinavian scene will likely think of themselves as having the most to offer, today we focus on Sweden and one the most eclectic bands to come from the nation, Månegarm.

Månegarm has been active for nearly thirty years, having formed in 1995 and releasing their first album three years later. Their mesh of black metal, folk and Viking metal crafts something truly astounding and many will argue that they've not let their audience down yet. So it is with their new album, "Ynglingaättens Öde," set for release next week via Napalm Records, which tells the amazing stories of nine Swedish kings from over a thousand years ago. It's sure to go down a treat and to discover more about the album, Metal Underground caught up with vocalist and bassist Erik Grawsiö. You can watch the interview in full at the bottom of the page or read a transcript below.

Diamond Oz: The new album, "Ynglingaättens Öde" is out on April 15th. Where does the title come from?

Erik Grawsiö: The title is about a royal family, or dynasty you might say and they were called the Ynglinga. It's a concept album and it's about in the 900s or so there was a poem called Ynglingatal, which details this royal kin and the lives and deeds of a lot of kings. The poem consists of fifty four verses I think and details the lives of twenty Swedish kings. So we built the album around these stories, so each song is about the life of one king.

Oz: Is this a subject you'd been wanting to discuss for a long time?

Erik: Yeah. Jacob the drummer is the one who writes the lyrics and today he's a history teacher at university. When he started to become a teacher, he had a class with a professor named Sundquist about the Ynglingatal, which is where Jacob got the idea that he wanted to do a concept album, but at that time we were working on our previous album, "Fornaldarsagor," which is also a tricky name! But he kept the idea and when I showed him some songs and some riffs for the new album, he told me about this idea and he really thought that the concept and the lyrics he had in mind would fit the new songs perfectly. So for a couple of years, it's grown.

Viscera Unveils New Music Video

British riff machine Viscera have today, 8th April 2022, returned with their blasting new single "Sungazer." You can check out the music video below.

The band comment of "Sungazer": "We’re surrounded by this smoke screen lifestyle, where people base their comparisons of others through a diamond lens that leaves all the sh*t in the shadows…'Sungazer' touches on that. Lyrically, it’s about becoming fixated on pursuits or people that ultimately have a negative impact on your mental state, to the point where you become cut off and disassociated with everyone around you. The distraction tactics we take on to escape from that, only to find yourself losing sight of the things that truly matter in your life and by then all the time has passed. We thought having the song set on another planet would be a cool way to symbolise that feeling of being cut off and alone."

The song was produced by the band and mixed by Simone Pietroforte (Distant), with artwork by Jason Peppiatt (Psycroptic). More...

Tungsten Posts "Bliss" Video Online

Swedish symphonic metal quartet Tungsten have revealed a video for "Bliss," the new single and title track from their third album, which is due for release 17th June via Arising Empire. You can check it out below.

The video was recorded and edited by guitarist Nick Johansson, who comments: "We already knew we wanted Volfram to be part of this video. Other than that I got some ideas from one of our band photos where we sit around an old black telephone, seemingly waiting for a call. This resulted in a concept for our video 'Bliss' which turned out pretty cool. The stressful feeling of the video suits the song and it’s lyrics well." More...

Bridear To Release New Album In May

Japanese metal band Bridear have returned with news of their brand new album, "Aegis Of Athena," coming next month, alongside an earth-shaking single. "Ray Of Chaos" soars in on feedback and a crushing riff, before unfolding into a melodic epic with the kind of guitar punch that metal fans will love… all topped off with Kimi’s sweetly sensual vocals. You can listen to the song here.

"Aegis Of Athena" is a blistering 11-track opus perfectly blending traditional heavy metal, progressive arrangements, and addictive J-rock hooks. Kimi describes the new album as "an ambitious balance of what inspires us – the new wave of British heavy metal and traditional hard rock bands with strong melodies," while bassist Haru claims "The arrangements and songwriting are really powerful. It will be amazing to play these new songs live!"

And "Ray Of Chaos" is a brilliant example of what makes this new album such a huge leap on for the band. "It’s definitely one of our best songs," says rhythm guitarist Ayumi. "It's a powerful declaration of carving our path and getting the last laugh on those who never believed in us. Bluesy and heavy guitar riffs with a strength conveyed in the lead vocals unlike anything we have done." More...

Incite Debuts "Mental Destruction" Video

The time has finally come and Arizona thrash metallers Incite have released their new album "Wake Up Dead" today! Forged from blood and sweat, this new release combines the greatest strengths of extreme metal. Incite jettison the extraneous bloat of slicker bands in favor of authentic grit and determination. The very spirit of heavy music culture, and attitude, courses through the veins of singer Richie Cavalera, guitarist Eli Santana, bassist Christopher “EL” Elsten, and drummer Lennon Lopez. Across five full-length albums and a handful of EPs, the Arizona powerhouse declared war on injustice, wealth inequality, and a bevy of similar societal ills with focused rage and violent intent.

Singer Richie Cavalera comments: "After a year and half wait to unleash this beast, 'Wake Up Dead' is here! We’re all so proud of this record, the new songs kill, the old classics show everyone where we’ve come from musically, and the artwork absolutely slays lives. We’ve become part of an insane new team, and we’re all ready for the world to enjoy the hard work, and sacrifice we all have put into this album. Can’t wait to play it live for you metalheads real soon. Hella metal forever!"

For all those who can't make it to the shows, make sure to enjoy the band's new music video, directed by Vicente Cordero.

"Metalheads, we give you 'Mental Destruction' - it’s a new vibe for us musically", Richie adds. "It’s heavy, it has acoustic guitar, and an insane video. It’s about the collapse of one’s mental state and not doing anything or caring to change it. We all have the power to change who we are for the better, we just have to make it happen. This is a huge song for us on every level and shows the new boundaries we’re pushing with the band. Headbang your asses off!!!" More...
