Interview
An Interview w/ Buddy From Senses Fail
Senses Fail, the New Jersey based group, released their debut EP “From Depths To Dreams” in 2002. Their most recent release, “Life is Not A Waiting Room,” deals with many personal issues from coping with the aftermath of a breakup to spending time with a fan before he died from cancer. They have a cut on the Madden NFL video game and have been on the Underworld: Evolution soundtrack in 2006 with “Bite to Break Sin,” and “Bad Reputation” on the Bad News Bears soundtrack in 2005. Now they are part of the new soundtrack Punisher: War Zone. I had an opportunity to talk with James “Buddy” Nielsen for Metalunderground.com. More...
Antagonist Parts with Guitarist Matt Lopez
California metal band Antagonist has officially parted ways with guitar player Matt Lopez. The band has released the following statement:
"Our long time friend and guitarist and friend Matt Lopez has decided to call it a day and pursue other things.
"He joined the band about 6 years ago, and although he wasn't technically an "original" member, we consider him one. He added so much to the band in terms of music and just our personality in general (or lack thereof, until he joined the group). He's decided that he wants to go back to school and we support him 100 percent.
"There's absolutely NO bad blood between us, we're still all the best of friends and will continue to jam and make music that isn't Antagonist. Being in a full time touring band is definitely not easy, especially one like ours that still books our own tours and hasn't made money in our ten year history (sad but true, haha). This lifestyle isn't for everyone, and to be perfectly honest, Matt did the very smart and logical thing, because now he won't be broke like the rest of us!
"So i know you're all wondering who's going to take Matt's place. And the fact is, so are we! We don't know the answer to that yet, but thankfully our good friend Lanny Pearlman (ex-Cerberus) is filling in for a few shows. We're currently looking for someone to fill in for our February tours, as Lanny won't be able to do so due to work obligations. As for a permanent replacement, that's something we'll need to think about long and hard. But we'll keep you all posted.
"If you have any questions/comments, please let us know. Matt's last show w/ the band will be at the end of this month. We'll let you know the details as soon as we get them."

Thanatos Announces New Album Details
Dutch death metal band Thanatos has issued the following statement about their upcoming album:
"It took us a fucking long time, but in a couple of months, 'Justified Genocide', our 5th full length album, will finally hit the shelves. The album is currently being mixed by Dan Swanö and it's great to see the album actually (and finally) taking shape now. After all the delays and the record label shit we've been through once again, it's a real good feeling to listen to the -almost- finished recordings now. It's pretty safe to say that this album will have the rawest, most dirty and "in your face" sound we ever managed to achieve on a Thanatos record. It features some of the fastest, most aggressive shit we ever recorded, but of course we also have some slower, heavier parts. The emphasis definitely lies on thrash metal, but as always there's also some death metal in our songs.
Judge for yourself in March. We'll upload another song (rough mix) on our MySpace page in early February. We'll also make sure that the album will be directly available through our website."
Metallica Hosts All Music Videos In One Location
Metallica has issued the following statement about hosting all of their music videos on their official website:
"In case you've been having a hard time finding and watching your favorite Metallica promo videos on other websites (!!) or trying to dig through our own website to find them, we've made them more accessible, actually downright hassle free, right here on the front page of your friendly neighborhood Metallica.com. If that wasn't enough, how about watching the videos through our brand new Flash Video Player!?
You'll find all of our Music Videos dating back to 1989's 'One' all the way up to our latest clip for 'All Nightmare Long.' You'll also find a few alternate edits of some of our videos such as an 11-minute theatrical cut of 'The Unforgiven' and a naughty little version of 'Whiskey in the Jar.' Since we upgraded to our new Video Player, all the Music Videos are crisper, clearer, and much higher quality than the clips that were living on the site before.
Kick back at your leisure and check out your favorite videos, past and present, by clicking here."
Enslaved and KoK Nominated for Norwegian Grammy
Enslaved has been nominated for the Norwegian Grammy Awards in the category Best Metal Album for “Vertebrae.” The prize ceremony will take place in Oslo on Saturday, January, 24th.
Grutle Kjellson comments: "This is great! Although this our 5th nomination, I will never get used to receiving honors such as this! Some people claim these awards does not mean anything, and they might be right of course. Then again they are lying idiots if they claim they wouldn't appreciate a Best Metal Album award. It simply states that you are doing something right even if your life doesn't depend on it."
"Congratulations to our buddies in Keep of Kalessin with their nomination too!"
Keep of Kalessin is also nominated for Best Metal album for ”Kolossus.” Keep of Kalessin will start 2009 with a headlining Finland tour, which starts January 10th in Helsinki, then Jyväskylä, Turku and Tampere.

DEMONOID, the Swedish old-school death/thrash metal project featuring ex-THERION members Kristian Niemann (guitar) and Johan Niemann (bass) along with former SOILWORK / CHIMAIRA drummer Richard Evensand, and DARK FUNERAL's Caligula on vocals offers the following update:
"Updates have been few and far between the last couple of months and recording has been on hold because well....life sort of got in the way. The family moved in November and it took just about two months to get everything sorted and up and running again. I also had to start earning more money; meaning working more; meaning more time spent with guitar students and less on the new record. Not exactly what I had planned but you gotta do what you gotta do." More...

We will play two shows, then have a day off, and then play like 35 days in a row without a break. I hope everyone will stay healthy because this will be rough. Then we have a day off again. All in all, we are going to play 50 shows in 52 days. 41 shows in the U.S. and nine in Canada. But the bottom line is that we are all looking forward to this VERY much!" More...

"With 'Sandmann,' Oomph! are releasing a new single on ..Feb. 6th, 2009.. that is not included on theircurrent Top Ten studio album 'Monster'.
Most of us think of the ‘Sandmann’ in terms of a happy childhood memory. But this new Oomph! song puts a brand new twist on the familiar old story, from the perspective of anything but a happy childhood! In 'Sandmann,; Oomph! bear their standard in the usual high fashion we’ve come to expect, additionally incorporating a children's lullaby that every child in the band’s native ....Germany.... knows from the crib to the grave. While the first impression in the chorus subtly transports us emotionally back to our earliest days, closer inspection reveals something more sinister just below the surface…...." More...

Fenriz of Darkthrone Announces Contest Answers
Yesterday, Fenriz of Darkthrone announced a trivia competition which had a question about the musical career of Darkthrone. He awarded two winners, who went by the names of Skorge and Damien, copies of Fenriz' Metal Merchants DJ set. The question was this: what are the similarities between Darkthrone's earlier musical career and that of James Brown or Status Quo? Their answers are shown below.
Damien's answer:
"Darkthrone's earlier musical career was profoundly influenced by the development of many different musical genres, yet applying what they can hear in a context that suits themselves in a way in which they like. Much like James Brown or Status Quo, they did exactly the same thing such as James Brown with blues and gospel-based forms of music and Status Quo with pop, rock n' roll and even psychedelia."
Skorge's answer:
"I'll go with the same sort of answer to Damien; Status Quo started out with psychedelic sort of music [style] but became disillusioned with their musical direction and abandoned the style for something else, much like Darkthrone did with Soulside Journey, abandoning death metal for black metal.
"James Brown was similar to Darkthrone's early career in almost the same way; he started off with a blues sort of style, and eventually crafted into a R&B sort of style.
"Also, each band was influenced heavily by different genres, as is evident by Darkthrone's shift in musical style, [changing] twice, and the way Fenriz posts bands on the myspace which we can check out, many of which are of different styles and backgrounds.
"There, that's what I think.
Priest's Glenn Tipton Talks About Touring And More
SundayMercury.net recently conducted an interview with Judas Priest guitarist Glenn Tipton. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
On plans for the band's latest album, "Nostradamus", a concept double album, to be performed in its entirety:
"Our ambition is to perform 'Nostradamus' from start to finish when everyone's got used to it and they all know it. We'll certainly pick some special venues as we'd like to make an event of it. We'll be looking at venues around the world that would contribute to the classical and operatic side of the project."
On an incident on their 1984 "Defenders of the Faith" tour, which means they're unable to play at one of the world's top arenas:
"Madison Square Garden banned us for life. The audience went berserk and ripped all the seats out. They cost more that quarter of a million dollars to replace. Me and Ken [PRIEST guitarist K.K. Downing] went back there to see a tennis match which John McEnroe was playing in. We went incognito, wearing hoodies so no one would recognize us but the ushers came up to us and said, 'Thanks for the new seats, guys.'"
On the upcoming European tour with Megadeth and Testament:
"The intro tape will be 'Dawn Of Creation' from 'Nostradamus', then 'Prophecy' and 'Death', and for our playout there's the title track so the fans will get plenty of 'Nostradamus' as such. . . There's 'Hell Patrol', 'Devil's Child', 'Sinner' — classic Priest, plus the unmissable 'Painkiller' and 'Hell Bent For Leather'."
On Judas Priest's next project:
"We might do a live album. We've recorded quite a few shows so we have to get together and listen to those and a think about that. But with us you never know what's around the corner. We never really plan. We finish a tour, take a break, then we go into a room and start to write. We're very lucky in this band that we have a great writing formula, we never know what we're going to come up with. That's the beauty of Priest, you never know what's coming next."
