Deftones Frontman Discusses New Album

Kerrang! magazine recently spoke to DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the group's new album. The short interview, which can also be found on the DEFTONES' official blog, follows below.

Kerrang!: It normally seems to take you years to release a new album. Why has this one happened so fast?

Chino: "We've certainly taken our time on the last few records but this one has happened very quickly. We got off tour and took a month off. Then we went into the studio and wrote a lot of music very quickly."

Kerrang!: It sounds like a very fertile period.

Chino: "It was. The most important thing we had to do was to break our habits and change the way we've done things for the last few years. One of the reasons the last few records took so long was because everyone was working separately. We would record our parts and then email them out without actually seeing each other. That has its positives but we really missed out on the creative process of all of us sitting in a room and writing together. This time, we were all together and that really helped. In fact, I'd say that our working relationship is better than it's ever been before. As a result, everything has improved — our friendships and our lives. We're all really happy now.

Kerrang!: The last album had a very difficult birth. You weren't sure you wanted to be in the band and there were lots of inter-band tensions. Has that changed?

Chino: "There were lots of problems on the last album, definitely. The way we were working meant that communication in the band wasn't very strong. That's changed now that we've shifted our approach. Making that last record was seriously unhealthy experience. It just dragged on without much direction. Even the idea of the record was just to make something vague, and that's pretty much what we did. I liked it, but when we focus and work together, it's a lot better."

Kerrang!: How has the relationship between the band members improved?

Chino: "Over the last few years, a lot of the band members have had a few problems — divorces, money problems, life — and it has just been an unhappy time. We've all come out of that now. I hate to talk like its all rainbows and sunshine over here, but it is!"

Kerrang!: So you feel positive now?

Chino: "The reason we're in a band is because it's fun. It just wasn't fun back when we were making 'Saturday Night Wrist'. I really didn't want to do it anymore, which is why I left the band to go and do the TEAM SLEEP thing. I really wasn't sure if I was going to return to the band either. We had to take a break because we'd been going for 10 years straight and it was a relentless cycle of studio, touring, studio, touring. It just wasn't fun. But, having rediscovered our friendships, everything became worthwhile again. Every day just gets better and better now."

Kerrang!: What does the new material sound like?

Chino: "The songs are definitely weird, which is a breath of fresh air to me. I haven't been playing guitar on these new songs so Steph (Carpenter, guitar) has taken up the helm and that's worked out really well. He's been very creative has been writing very weird, melodic stuff. That's great because I want the album to be as weird as we can possibly make it without completely alienating people. If I had to compare it to any of our records, then I think it probably reminds me of 'White Pony' the most. There's a lot of atmosphere and a lot of soundscaping. I couldn't' feel better about it at the moment."

Led Zeppelin Bassist Looks Back On Reunion Show

David Fricke of RollingStone.com recently conducted an interview with LED ZEPPELIN bassist John Paul Jones. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

RollingStone.com: What were your feelings the day of the show, in the hours before you went on stage?

John Paul Jones: I tried to keep the enormity of it all as far away as possible, until the last minute. I sat around playing banjo all day. It calms me down. For every show we've ever done, there is always hype, expectancy. For us, it was just "Let's get on and do it." Obviously, it was quite a reception when we did get out there.

RollingStone.com: There was a dramatic quality to opening with "Good Times Bad Times" — the first song on LED ZEPPELIN's first album.

John Paul Jones: That's the hardest riff I ever wrote, the hardest to play. But it was a good starter, because everybody had to focus. We soon figured out in rehearsals what the first three numbers would be ("Good Times Bad Times", "Ramble On", "Black Dog") and that we would play them straight through.

What gave us confidence was the week before [the show], we did a full production rehearsal, with the full screen set up. That was really good. It was a smaller room, and you could hear everything, which is the only thing I regret about those stadiums — you don't hear all of the subtleties. The groove is much tighter in the small room. I can only wish we could play 2000 seaters forever, because that's where it sounds great. But the excitement was there on stage [at the O2 arena], as it was in the old days.

RollingStone.com: At soundcheck, I was surprised to hear you, Jimmy Page and Jason Bonham play instrumental versions of "Good Times Bad Times" and "Ramble On". It was like hearing ZEPPELIN in dub — the subtleties and interplay that go into the background when Robert Plant sings over them.

John Paul Jones: He didn't do that much singing in rehearsal. Robert wanted to protect his voice. We did a lot of the songs instrumentally for quite awhile, especially when he was out doing promotion [for "Raising Sand", Plant's hit album with Alison Krauss]. And it was really good for us. It was us getting used to each other, which you have to do in order to bring this off. You want to be tight. But I like to be free in what I do. I hardly ever play the same bass line twice. Even in songs where it's mapped out, like "Good Times Bad Times", I swap it around a little bit. We all enjoy the freedom to do that. In order to have that freedom, you have to know each other so well.

RollingStone.com: How would you describe Jason's playing during the show? He was very much his father's son.

John Paul Jones: A lot of the fills were not what his dad did at all. He's as fearless as his dad, that's for sure [laughs]. But he did an amazing job, when you consider that he had to answer to every drummer in the world after that show. With that sort of pressure, to bring all that off was astonishing. "Kashmir" was absolutely wonderful, the way he led in and out of the choruses and bridges.

Type O Negative To Re-release New Album

Just in time for Valentine's Day, goth/rock legends TYPE O NEGATIVE have announced the February 12 release of two special editions of their acclaimed new album "Dead Again".

The deluxe CD version will contain a bonus DVD with exclusive live performances, interviews and studio videos. The discs will be repackaged in a special red cover. A limited-edition triple-vinyl box set will also be released and features "Dead Again" on high-quality 180-gram vinyl. The vinyl box set will contain the bonus DVD, along with an exclusive t-shirt and mp3 files of the album.

In other TYPE O NEGATIVE news, the stunning new video for "September Sun" will be making its small-screen debut on MTV2's "Headbanger's Ball" this Saturday, January 12 during the first hour of the broadcast.

TYPE O NEGATIVE drummer Johnny Kelly and guitarist Kenny Hickey will take part in several signing sessions during this year's NAMM show (National Association of Music Merchants), which runs from January 17 to January 20 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.

The signing schedule for Johnny and Kenny at NAMM for Saturday, January 19:

Kenny:

3 p.m. - Schecter

Johnny:

1 p.m. - Latin Percussion
2 p.m. - Pearl Drums
3 p.m.- Sabian Cymbals

Important: The NAMM Show is **NOT** open to the public. The only attendees are NAMM member companies and their invited guests.

Kelly and Hickey will also perform with their SEVENTH VOID side project later that night as part of the Schecter Guitars showcase.

Rounded out by bassist Hank Hell (INHUMAN) and guitarist Matt Brown (ex-SUPERMASSIV), SEVENTH VOID contines TYPE O's tradition of slow, heavy riffs and existential lyrics, but with a slightly sludgier, "stonier" flavor.

The band's upcoming album will reportedly be co-mixed by Vinnie Paul (PANTERA, DAMAGEPLAN).

Atreyu To Reissue Latest Album

The Pulse of Radio reports: ATREYU is getting ready to join fellow Orange County, California residents AVENGED SEVENFOLD on this winter's Taste of Chaos tour. Although the tour doesn't begin until February 29 in Denver, ATREYU singer Alex Varkatzas told The Pulse of Radio that his band is keeping busy with rehearsals and planning a reissue of its latest album, "Lead Sails Paper Anchor". "We're just kind of practicing," he said. "We're working on writing a new song that we're gonna release as part of, like, a re-release of 'Lead Sails', just to add some DVD content and some other things like that. So we're keeping busy."

Varkatzas did not have a title for the new song, nor a release date for the expanded edition of "Lead Sails...", which will come with a DVD.

"Lead Sails Paper Anchor", ATREYU's major label debut, arrived last summer and features the single "Becoming the Bull". The newest single from the disc is called "Falling Down".

The 43-show Chaos run will also feature performances from BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, BLESS THE FALL, IDIOT PILOT and others. It's scheduled to last through mid-April.

Chevelle Working On New Material

The Pulse of Radio reports: CHEVELLE plans to hit the road again as the Chicago trio continues to support its 2007 album, "Vena Sera". The band has been home since early December and drummer Sam Loeffler told The Pulse of Radio that they've started working on new material at frontman Pete Loeffler's house. "We have, like, a writing studio at his house, which is great, because we're just able to just sit back, try ideas, and drink some booze at the bar, that kind of thing," he said. "When we actually get it sort of together, we'll go to our regular rehearsal studio and start to, like, lay down basically what would be demos."

The upcoming tour will also feature FINGER ELEVEN.

"Vena Sera" is CHEVELLE's fourth album and features the current single, "I Get It". The next track to head to rock radio will be "The Fad".

The CD marked the recording debut of bassist Dean Bernardini. He replaced Joe Loeffler, brother of Sam and Pete.

CHEVELLE has confirmed only one date so far in 2008, in January 31 at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan.

Hatebreed Frontman Speaks On Roadrunner Split

HATEBREED frontman Jamey Jasta recently spoke to Revolver magazine about the group's split with Roadrunner Records, the company that released HATEBREED's latest CD, 2006's "Supremacy". "They had a bunch of people on their label, and we felt we didn't get the publicity push that we deserved for our last record," he said. "We realized we need to go to a place where we can be the big fish in the small pond. But ultimately there're no hard feelings; the split was good on both sides."

Asked if HATEBREED is actively looking for a label, Jasta replied, "Well, first we're gonna do a separate deal for our DVD. There's always been so much red tape with DVDs, and we want to make sure we do it right. We're actually recording the majority of the footage over Christmas break during my label's annual Stillborn Fest. I'm hoping for a May or June 2008 DVD release."

According to Jamey, HATEBREED's next studio release will be a "covers" albums, which will include the band's versions of songs from such varied acts as CRO-MAGS, CROWBAR, D.R.I. and METALLICA. More information will be made available soon.

God Forbid Issue DVD And Album Update

New Jersey metallers GOD FORBID check in with the following update from guitarist Doc Coyle:

"Howdy partners! It's Doc from God Forbid here to let everyone know what's been going on with the band. It has been a while since we've given an update. We actually just played Stillborn Fest with HATEBREED over the holidays, and it went incredibly well. The shows were packed, and it is amazing to me how our live shows just seem to get better and better over time. They went fucking crazy! Thanks again to Hatebreed for once again taking us on the road. They are great friends and and still one the best live bands around. I'd also like to thank the other bands on the bill; AGNOSTIC FRONT, NECRO, AT ALL COST, THY WILL BE DONE, TURMOIL, SHAI HULUD, and BLOODJINN. We made some new friends and reunited with some old ones. Definitely a great way to spend the holidays. I would also like to wish everyone a happy new year.

This is going to be a big year for God Forbid as we will be releasing our first ever DVD and our first new album since 2005. The DVD is pretty much done except for the menus and we still need a title. It's incredible how difficult it is to come up with something as minute as a title, but it is very important. I've already mentioned how incredible the concert portion looks and sounds, but the band was fortunate enough to be able to screen the documentary portion directed by Denise Korycki, and we were all blown away. It is a combination of historical insight, introspection into our personalities, social commentary, and some goddamn funny ass shit! I guess we were sick of being funny on other bands DVDs. If you consider yourself a God Forbid fan, this DVD will be essential. I think this DVD ranks among the best metal DVDs on the market.?
In regards to the new album, we are a lot further along in the writing process. We have a few songs done, and probably a dozen more in the works. The material so far is extremely varied. We have a really black metal influenced song, a sludgy, melodic opus, a much heavier 'Fallen Hero' type track, an epic OPETH inspired song, and a bunch of other awesome shit. Rock stuff, prog stuff, slow songs, thrash songs. I honestly am not sure what songs will make the album in the end, but I can say that it will once again be a departure from what we've done but still sound like God Forbid. We will probably end up writing too many songs and having to pick which ones will fit best. Our goal has been to make an album that will not only be a landmark for God Forbid, but for heavy music in general. After showing some very rough rehearsal demos to people, and getting some very enthusiastic responses, I feel like were at least headed in the right direction. We have not finished any tracks with vocals, so I can't answer the ever elusive question about whether there will be more or less singing. I'm still not sure. We will try to do what fits the songs. I can also say that Dallas (Coyle, guitarist/vocalist) and I have began using 7-string guitars, so tonally there will be more variety. We will be using some of our older tunings, but will be going as low as A and G for some songs. But no nu-metal songs, in case we were getting your hopes up. We will be heading into the studio at the beginning of March with our longtime producer and friend, Eric Rachel at Trax East. So the album we probably come out mid to late summer. Let's keep our fingers crossed on that front. We will also begin videotaping rehearsals and recording, and releasing some YouTube updates as the process continues. Keep your eyes and ears open for those.?
We do not have any touring scheduled at the moment as the focus is on the new record, but we would like to do some shows to support the DVD release. There is no release date yet unfortunately. The band would like to do some European festivals in early summer, and hopefully land a big US summer tour to help blow this new album up. Any touring plans will be announced in the coming months. Everyone take care and stay metal. Vote Obama 2008!"

The Binary Code Issue Studio Update

New Jersey death metallers, The Binary Code, issue the following update on their Myspace page:

"Jables here. As I'm sitting here listening to the mastered copy of our new recordings, I keep smiling, because we had the best recording experience we've ever had. Paul Bebel is not only a new, and good friend, but also one of the most talented, nicest, hardworking people I've ever worked with while being in this band since day 1. We've recorded w/ Erik Rutan (T.T.E.O.T.D., Cannibal Corpse, Into the Moat), Jesse Cannon (D.E.P., Saves the Day, Say Anything, Head Automatica), Steve Austin (Converge, Lamb of God, Today is the Day, Circle of Dead Children), and a few more. Paulie (Bebel) has recorded so many popular rappers, it'd be enough to write a novel. Aside from Paulie having the best recording equipment I've EVER come across (hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of hardware, monitors, and microphones), he's also provided the best vibe we've ever been affected by. He whole-heartedly cared about each and every thing we had to say about how we felt about what was going on. Sometimes, these big name metal/rock/pop engineers get this primadona bug up their ass, "I recored _______, so don't tell me it's not right." Paulie will out-live the cock-roaches of the music industry during a nuclear music bomb, with his talent, and appreciation for opinion and perspective. Paulie might not ever read this or ever know we said this about him, but we felt compelled to expressing ourselves this time." More...

Blessed By A Broken Heart Post New Songs Online

Canadian's finest, BLESSED BY A BROKEN HEART, are invading Europe in January and early February for their first full European tour with labelmates Maroon as well as UK darlings Bring Me The Horizon and Architects after playing a sold-out UK only headlining tour with Enter Shikari in 2006.

The group's unique, infectious brand of '80s madness is undeniable, and they deliver a plethora of balls-out, party rock anthems that are so catchy and infectious, they will soon be your new guilty pleasure. This Montreal-based six-piece have put the pedal to the metal and will storm over the Atlantic to steal all our booze and women while having the times of their lives.

Their sophomore, appropriately entitled album "Pedal To The Metal" is scheduled for a release in the spring 2008. The effort was recorded by GGGarth (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kiss, Motley Crue, Rise Against, Atreyu, Biffy Clyro, Nickelback, Rage Against The Machine, Testament) and mixed by Mike Hatalak from It Dies Today who also worked with Roses are Red and Dead Hearts. Make no mistake, this is fun people making music with only one intention in mind: to have a damn good time. More...

Metallica Drummer Says New Album Is More "Dynamic"

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich recently spoke to Revolver magazine about the band's much-anticipated new album, tentatively due in the spring via Warner Bros. Records.

"This stuff is certainly a lot more dynamic and a lot more varied than the last couple of go-rounds," he said. "There's a lot of light and shade in these songs. There's heavy, fast, nutty stuff, and then there's some slowdowns and musical interludes. It's pretty different from 'St. Anger', and it's pretty different from the 'Load' stuff. This stuff is not the one-dimensional punch in the face that 'St. Anger' was. This is probably a little more like those couple of albums back there in the decade that begins with an '8.'"

When asked if the material represents a return to the "old school," Lars replied, "I hate to be that specific, because six months from now people are gonna go, 'What the fuck? Lars lied to us!' But it feels that way to me. It's been no secret that Rick [Rubin, producer] suggested to us that we use a couple of those records as reference points — that we spend some time kind of accessing that headspace. So when we would come to forks in the road, sometimes the exercise became, 'What would we have done at this point in 1985?'"

Fans Want Dimebag Statue Erected In Dallas

According to Revolver magazine, two PANTERA fans — Houston's Joey Riordan and Toronto's Mangra — are trying to get a commemorative "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott statue erected in his hometown in Dallas. As inspiration, they cite existing monuments to Jimi Hendrix (in Seattle), Elvis Presley (in Memphis), and THIN LIZZY frontman Phil Lynott (Dublin, Ireland). "Getting Dimebag Darrell a statue in Dallas matters," Riordan tells Revolver. "That was, his memory will live on."

Motorhead Singers Side Band Announces Shows

THE HEAD CAT, the psychobilly side-project of MOTÖRHEAD mainman Lemmy Kilmister which also features STRAY CATS' Slim Jim Phantom on drums/percussion and Danny B. Harvey (ROCKATS, 13 CATS, LONESOME SPURS) on guitar, has scheduled the following dates:

Jan. 09 - Vixen - Reno, NV
Jan. 10 - The Independent - San Francisco, CA
Jan. 11 - El Corazón – Seattle, WA
Jan. 12 - Dantes – Portland, OR
Feb. 01 - Viejas Casino - San Diego, CA

In a recent interview with SFWeekly.com, Harvey revealed that the band has been working on material for the follow-up to 2006's "Fool's Paradise" (released on Cleopatra). "We have written three originals recently, so don't be surprised if the second CD has a lot of originals on it," he said. "Since we've started playing out live, the band's sound has solidified and we've taken on a character of our own." But just because new material is making its way into the mix doesn't mean THE HEAD CAT has ambitions beyond a pleasurable itinerary. "We all get along wonderfully and so far everything this band has done has been both exciting and fun," he enthuses. "We do this band because it's fun. We have no dreams of making it big because we all already have successful careers in music."

According to a posting on THE HEAD CAT MySpace page, the band is "a high-energy, take-no-prisoners combo" that was formed "just to remind the world how rock 'n' roll is supposed to fuckin sound. Forget all those rock posers who have nothing new to say, passing themselves off as the real thing. When it comes to real rock 'n' roll, these three guys have lived it, breathed it, bled it and have set the lifestyle example that all you rebels, rockers and outcasts should strive to follow!"

Rob Zombie Cancels Upcoming Tulsa Show

ROB ZOMBIE's previously announced January 26, 2008 sold-out headlining concert at Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma has been cancelled. No further information is currently available.

Rob Zombie told RollingStone.com last month that his next film might be a Western. The rocker-turned-filmmaker, who said he loved last fall's remake of "3:10 to Yuma", explained, "It's one of my favorite genres. I love John Ford, Howard Hawks". Although Zombie has not revealed specific plans for his fourth film as a director, he told one group of reporters on a recent conference call that it would not be a horror movie. He has also ruled out directing a sequel to his hit remake of "Halloween" and dismissed Internet rumors that he was working on a re-imagining of the '80s chiller "C.H.U.D."

Zombie also said he'd like to make a feature-length version of "Werewolf Women of the S.S.", the fake trailer he directed as part of last spring's "Grindhouse".

The unrated "director's cut" of "Halloween" arrived on DVD on December 18, containing additional footage, deleted scenes, documentaries and more.

Vreid Commence Work On New Album

Norwegian black metallers VREID check in with the following update:

"Good new year to everyone.

2007 was a fantastic year for Vreid. In the spring we released I Krig, our 3rd album. The response from fans, media and other interested was amazing, and judging from sales, I Krig is our greatest success so far. We sure enjoyed doing our first US show at the Heathen Crusade festival, and the Ragnarok festival in March in front of 3500 people was fantastic. During the year we also got great response at Metal camp in Slovenia, and 3 great Norwegian festivals; Hits, Metal Heart and Støy.

Nevertheless the highlight of 2007 was the Winter Europe tour with MARDUK and UNLEASHED. Those two bands proved every night why they are living legends of the metal scene. Horns up to our Swedish comrades. The tour was perfectly organized courtesy of the professional Massive Music and their crew. The tour visited 13 countries, and more than 10000 people attended these shows. We would like to say thanks and hail to all those who came to the show and supported us, you made these shows atmospheric and fantastic for us. See you again soon. Check out our tour report at our MySpace page, if you are interested in reading more about the tour.

2008 will be another productive year for Vreid: four festivals have already been confirmed In March we will return to the Ragnarok festival in Lichtenfels, Germany. The audience was brilliant last year, so we sure are looking forward to this one. On the 25th we are doing our first show in Haugesund, Norway. We will play the annual Karmøygeddon festival with bands like KREATOR, TAAKE and FINNTROLL, to name a few. July 18th we are doing our first outdoor show in Austria, playing at the Kaltenbach festival, located in the beautiful countryside of Austria. In August we are proud to announce that we will play at the legendary Party San festival in Germany, other bands confirmed are; OBITUARY, IMPALED NAZARENE, BEHEMOTH, KAMPFAR. More shows will be added as we get them confirmed.

We have also started working on album number four. Some ideas have been recorded, and the frames for six-seven songs are ready. We will continue working on the new material during the winter, and hopefully we will start the recordings during the summer. Our plan is an early 2009 release, but we will let you know as things develop. My impression so far is that this will a blacker and more atmospheric album, but it will definitively be build on the foundation that we have made with our previous three albums."

Upcoming Vreid live shows:

April
25/26 - Karmøygeddon Festival - Byscenen/Karmøy, Norway

July
17/19 - Kaltenbach Open Air - Kaltenbach, Austria

August
8/9 - Party San Open Air - Bad Berka, Germany

Subterranean Masquerade Working On New Material

SUBTERRANEAN MASQUERADE mastermind Tomer Pink has issued the following update:

"Some songs are already recorded without vocals while some others are waiting to me to finish demoing. I do some of the recording in my studio thus I allow myself to take the time and rearrange things conveniently to make a hell of an album! For now I can revel that the third piece in 'X' trilogy will be entitled 'In Pastille Colors'. I've been traveling the world quite a bit the past few years so you could expect to hear some of these influences along with the regular SUBMASQ twist."

"Honestly, I do take the time and hoping to make an album I will be happy with for years to come. In the meantime, I promise to let you guys hear some new stuff soon. There is one song from the 'Suspended Animation Dreams' session that was never released (our heavier one yet, I think) so I might release this along with some new tracks. We'll see!"

Hailing from various parts of the USA, SUBTERRANEAN MASQUERADE was originally formed in 1997 by Tomer as a means of self-expression of his deepest and darkest thoughts and emotions.

He has suffered a very painful back injury while slam dunking a basketball at the park. Fortunately a wonderful gentleman by the name of Steve Bache from He Is Legend will be filling in drumming duties. We hope that Mike recovers quickly and is both behind his kit and back on the court in no time. See you soon. Love ETID” More...

Bounded By Blood Reveal "Feed The Beast" Cover Art

Picking up where the cover for EXTINGUISH THE WEAK left off, BONDED BY BLOOD's mascot, Brutus faces off with the devil on the cover of the band's EARACHE debut, FEED THE BEAST.

With its dynamic comic book-style artwork, FEED THE BEAST's cover conveys not only the sense of danger and electricity that is personified in the music, but a deeper meaning is conveyed as well. "The artwork represents my whole view on Los Angeles. It takes you in and spits you back out," says vocalist, Jose "Aladdin" Barrales. "LA is like a beast, if you don't do the right "thing" you will end up on the streets. I think Tom, the artist, took my interpretation and made it come alive."

Check out the cover art of FEED THE BEAST here.

BONDED BY BLOOD will commence the recording of FEED THE BEAST with producer Michael Rosen (TESTAMENT, DEATH ANGEL) on January 11th 2008 at J Street Recorders in Sacramento, CA. More...
