Dead Head Sign With Displeased Records

Dutch thrash metallers DEAD HEAD have inked a deal with Displeased Records. The band's new full length is expected in the summer of 2008.

The current band lineup includes Tom van Dijk (vocals, bass), Ronnie van der Wey (guitar), Robbie Woning (guitar) and Hans Spijker (drums)

Dead Head was formed April 8th, 1989 in Kampen, Holland. On that day the four original members Tom van Dijk (bass, vocals), Robbie Woning (guitar), Ronnie van der Wey (guitar), and Hans Spijker (drums), decided to form a band and to become the most intensive and brutal thrash metal band Europe ever had seen. In the fine tradition of bands like Dark Angel, Kreator and Sadus they distilled their own way to compose songs and to make a solid impact on stage by pounding out their songs as if every minute could be their last. Sothis Complete New Record

US symphonic black metallers SOTHIS have issued the following update from drummer Dross:

"The new record is now complete."

"(Vocalist) Drogoth and I have finally recovered from our heavy drinking in Dublin, Ireland Saturday night and are now in Sweden sitting in the studio drinking coffee, making some eggs and waiting for Andy (La Rocque - KING DIAMOND) to arrive so that we can begin mixing the album."

"We plan on updating this blog every other day or so with photos and/or video etc. so stay tuned. We should have some photos up REALLY soon."

"We will NOT be doing any live shows until the new album is complete."

"That means there will be NO shows until March/April of 2008 at the earliest. We are working on several exciting new things for our live shows and are looking forward to getting back on stage as soon as possible. It is of course our hope to be able to tour as extensively as possible once the new album is released so hopefully we'll make it to a town near you."

Forbidden Announce More West Coast Shows

Guitarist Craig Locicero of the reunited San Franciso Bay Area metallers FORBIDDEN has issued the following update:

"First off, we have to let everyone know that [drummer] Gene Hoglan [STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DEATH, DARK ANGEL, TESTAMENT] WILL be playing our first few gigs in February, not Paul Bostaph [TESTAMENT, SLAYER, EXODUS]. Paul has been busy doing the TESTAMENT gig and was non-committal about FORBIDDEN practices and shows. We had to make a choice and we feel we made the correct one. The last thing we would have wanted to do is go out there in front of everyone unrehearsed and unprepared. So Gene is going to spend all of February with us getting the beast off the ground! Both Glen [Alvelais, guitar] and I have played with Gene in TESTAMENT and DEATH, respectively. So we're pretty familiar with each other's styles and we're also great friends. Hopefully Paul's and FORBIDDEN's paths will still cross in the near future. In the meantime, we're going to CRUSH people with 'Mean Gene' behind the kit!!!

"About the shows. Obviously most folks already know that we're doing DEATH ANGEL's CD release gig at Slim's in San Francisco as a co-headlining bill. This is a very important show for us because it's in our home town and it's with our bros D.A.!!! But we'll also be playing a couple of other gigs before that. We need to knock some of the rust off! No better way to do that then playing live.

"We're going to be playing at the Fat Cat in Modesto, California on February 24th with SKINLAB and KAOS! This show should be a blow-out. It gives some of the folks from the Southeast part of the Bay and further down a chance to see FORBIDDEN since the DEATH ANGEL show is already almost sold out.

"We'll also be announcing a gig at a secret location before the Modesto show in a few weeks. This will be in a small venue and its purpose will be to try out some of the material for the select few that can get inside. We'll also make it a meet-and-greet for some lucky fans to get pictures and sign some stuff as well. We figure that this Gene Hoglan-backed lineup might as well get our feet wet as much as we can before the big Bay Area smash-up. So when we announce this 'secret show' those who want to go better jump on the chance as soon as possible!!!

"The last thing I want everyone to know is that Glen and I have been working like mad dogs on the songs! We're trying to get together a few times a week to work out the details. Glen already knows all of 'Forbidden Evil' and some of the 'Twisted Into Form' material. Those are the records we're really concentrating on for the time being. Now we're getting all of the parts down as the guitar duo we used to be, but much better! We have so much more wisdom and experience (OK, we're older) than we did as the kids just out of high school that we were when we recorded 'Forbidden Evil'. I have to admit that I'm a little surprised that my picking hand is getting up to speed as quickly as it is. It really is like riding a bike, just really fast! We should be a lot tighter of a band then we ever were with all of the preparation that we're taking. I can't wait to get Russ [Anderson, vocals], Gene and Matt [Camacho, bass] with us all in the same room to bash it out.

"We want to give everyone that spends one red penny on seeing FORBIDDEN live in 2008 their money's worth!!!"

Iced Earth To Headline ProgPower USA

The following announcement has been released on the 2008 edition of ProgPower USA:

At 4 PM today (January 14th) festival organizer Glenn Harveston announced ICED EARTH as the headliner of this year's event, to be held September 26th - 27th, at Center Stage, in Atlanta, GA. It will be a rare opportunity to see the band, now that they are restricted in the amount of touring they can undergo, due to the return of vocalist Matt Barlow. In other news, ASTRAL DOORS has been replaced by ROB ROCK.

Iced Earth founder, Jon Schaffer had the following to say regarding the festival: "Well, it's been a long time coming, but things have finally lined up right for usto be able to do Glenn's festival. It's truly an honor for Iced Earth to play theProgPower USA festival. I flew down several years ago to check it out and it isdefinitely a top notch operation. It's really a model for the way festivals shouldbe run, good people with integrity make all the difference in any organization, and Glenn and his crew are all that and more. This is something that we've wanted to do for a long time and it's finally going to work out perfectly for our plans in 2008. Part 2 of the Something Wicked epic will be out right around this time and it willbe a killer celebration! This will be very cool, and a good time will be had by all! We look forward to seeing you there!"

“I am beyond excited to have America’s premiere metal band on stage at America’s premiere metal festival”, said promoter Glenn Harveston. I may be the promoter, but I’m just as big a fanboy as everyone else in wanting to see them here in Atlanta. I want to personally thank Jon Schaffer for believing in me and the festival.

ProgPower USA IX marks the first confirmed show with returning vocalist Matt Barlow to the group.

Joining Iced Earth at the festival are Florida’s Jon Oliva’s Pain, Poland’s Riverside, Germany’s Iron Savior, Denmark’s Volbeat, Sweden’s Andromeda, Italy’s Elvenking, France’s Spheric Universe Experience, Austria’s Serenity, and Italy’s Pathosray.

The second festival headliner is scheduled to be announced within the next few weeks.

Harveston also has announced a roster change, “I’m afraid that Astral Doors will not be able to make their scheduled appearance. This is 100% my fault as I knew there was a risk involved with booking them so early. I appreciate the professionalism the band has shown and can now announce that they are the first band confirmed for ProgPower USA X. Florida’s Rob Rock has graciously stepped into their former slot.”

Tickets for ProgPower USA IX go on sale March 1st and limited to 900 tickets. Advance gold badges are sold-out for the seventh consecutive year. For further information including advertisement and sponsorship details, visit www.progpowerusa.com.

Ex-Megadeth Guitarist Explains Departure

Guitarist Glenn Drover has delivered the following official statement in regards to his departure from MEGADETH:

"I am aware of the rumors that I left Megadeth to focus on family life. My family life has always been my priority.

"In the end, I was unhappy with the situation, which magnified me wanting to spend more time with my family and realizing that it’s time for me to move on to the next chapter in my musical career. First, I want to spend some good quality time here at home with my family for a little bit before getting into anything serious.

"Obviously, I have not spent the last several years of my life working hard to stop now.

"That would be insane, to put it mildly. This is what I do, and I am excited about what the future in music has in store for me.

"I would like to thank Dave (Mustaine) for giving me a great opportunity to be a part of Megadeth for the past 3 + years. To be a part of this band with my brother (drummer) Shawn (Drover) and tour the world, was awesome to say the least!

"I have a lot of great memories and met a ton of great people along the way, both fans and people in the industry. I am also very proud to have been a part of bringing Megadeth back to the forefront and firmly putting the band back on the map!

"Last but not least, I would like to thank all of the fans, the Megadeth road crew and all of my endorsements, as well as everyone who has supported me in making my time with Megadeth a very memorable experience!

Glen Drover."

As previously reported, Megadeth has officially welcomed new guitarist Chris Broderick (NEVERMORE, JAG PANZER).

"I've noticed [on the Internet] that people are pissed with me over the way things were handled with Glen quitting the group," says Mustaine, "but they're gonna be pissed even more when they hear how fierce we are with Chris! Megadeth is playing at a new level."

Broderick will make his live debut with Megadeth February 4th in Finland, where the group--guitarist/singer Mustaine, guitarist Broderick, drummer Shawn Drover and James Lomenzo on bass - is kicking off a long string of international dates which wrap March 14th in Bangalore, India.

Nine Inch Nails Singer Speaks On Internet Tax

The Pulse of Radio reports: NINE INCH NAILS mainman Trent Reznor told CNET.com in an interview late last week that he might favor the idea of a tax added to monthly Internet Service Provider (ISP) fees as an income stream for artists whose music is downloaded for free. Reznor explained, "I think if there was an ISP tax of some sort, we can say to the consumer, 'All music is now available and able to be downloaded and put in your car and put in your iPod and put up your ass if you want and it's $5 on your cable bill.'"

Reznor made his comments while discussing the release of "The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust" by hip-hop poet SAUL WILLIAMS.

Reznor issued the album as a digital download through his own label, offering a lower-quality copy for free and a higher-quality one for five dollars. He revealed last week that just one in five people paid for the higher-quality version, calling the results "disheartening."

Reznor told CNET.com, "I think if we could wave a magic wand and do it again I think (we would) offer an inexpensive version in addition to a premium physical product that could be shipped out afterward."

NINE INCH NAILS is currently unsigned after Reznor's contract with Interscope Records expired last fall. He said that future NIN albums would probably be released as both a digital and physical product a la RADIOHEAD.

Jag Panzer Announce New Guitarist

Colorado metallers JAG PANZER have announced the addition of Christian Lasegue as their new lead guitarist. Those familiar with the band's "Chain of Command" release will recognize his name as the lead guitarist on that album.

Guitarist Mark Briody comments: "We had set the bar pretty high for lead guitar playing with our first full-length album. There was much concern among fans and critics as to whether or not we could maintain such a high level of musicianship in the lead guitar department. Christian quelled those concerns about two seconds into his first solo. A large part of the underground popularity of 'Chain of Command' is easily attributed to the electrifying guitar playing of Christian Lasegue. Christian was a great guitar player back then and his chops are light years beyond that today. I'm excited to be working with him again."

Christian first gig back with the band will be on stage as headliners at the prestigious Keep It True festival this April in Germany.

Regarding former JAG PANZER guitarist Chris Broderick's new gig as a member of MEGADETH, Briody said, "It's not enough to just say 'Best of luck to Chris.' We're a close-knit band and Chris is a brother to all of us. He's a great guy and a close friend. We're all very excited and happy for Chris. MEGADETH fans are in for a treat, Chris is a world-class player."

Korn Guitarist Claims He Has Special Announcement

KORN guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer has issued the following update:

"2007 was great for me and Emotional Syphon Recordings [Munky's record label]. We released two kick-ass albums from very different bands, DROID and MONSTER IN THE MACHINE.

"Both albums are special for me.

"I started ESR because I felt like there was a void in the music industry. I aimed to fill that by promoting more great music. I wanted to give these artists a channel to be heard. These records are completely untouched by industry politics and trends. They come from the respective musicians' hearts. They also are the beginning of ESR! I'd been wanting to start a label for a very long time, and now it's up and running! We're on the right track...

"Last year was also fantastic for KORN. We released a great new album and toured the whole world with SLIPKNOT drum legend Joey Jordison behind the kit. I had a great time playing all of those shows and meeting fans at the ESR booth. I'm looking forward to going back out and playing some more killer shows for all of you.

"Last year definitely had some cool highlights, however, 2008 is already shaping up to be even better. KORN is about to embark on a huge tour of Europe and the UK. We've got Ray Luzier of ARMY OF ANYONE filling in on the drums, and we have a lot of surprises planned. We'll be busting out some classic tracks as well as newer stuff from the 'Untitled' record. So if you're in Europe or the UK, don't miss these shows! It's going to be a very memorable run for all of us.

"I'm also very stoked with ESR's progress. We're building the label even more, and both DROID and MONSTER IN THE MACHINE will be on tour all year.

"For those of you that caught DROID on Family Values 2007 or MONSTER IN THE MACHINE out with TEAM SLEEP, you know how killer these bands are live! Do not miss them on tour this year. Also be sure to say 'hi' to the guys after the shows or at their merch booths. ESR is a family, and we consider the fans a big part of that family. We want to meet and talk to all of you! This is going to be a big year for the label and both of these kick-ass bands!

"Before I hit the road, I wanted to let everyone in on a little secret. I have a big surprise announcement coming very, very soon. It's something I'm extremely passionate about, and I have a feeling everyone is going to love it. Be sure to keep checking this page, because this announcement is going to be big…"

Katagory V Split With Vocalist And Guitarist

Salt Lake City, Utah-based act KATAGORY V have issued the following update:

Katagory V has officially announced that long-time lead vocalist Lynn Allers is officially not longer in the band, as well as guitarist Marc Hanson.

This news comes only a few short months after the band's recently released 4th album Hymns Of Dissension (Nightmare Records USA/Burning Star Records Europe).

Bassist and founder Dustin Mitchell explains the circumstances in detail about what lead up to their departure...

"Concerning Lynn, I'm sure everyone out there knew something was going on when we had Norman Skinner of the Bay Area based band, IMAGIKA, filling in for our CD release party. It seems kind of obvious that something is up when the singer that recorded the album that is being celebrated, is not taking part in an important event like that. And then when our band is enlisted to back Ronny Munroe of METAL CHURCH as his band for his solo gig too boot? Yeah... omething is certainly amiss

"Sadly, it had come to a point where Lynn’s time and dedication to Katagory V was no longer a priority for him, and we could see it in his attitude for some time now. This was probably one of the harder decisions we've had to make as a band, but ironically, this situation has been a long time coming. In the end, we really cared about Lynn as a friend and about him being in the band, but we knew it was time to make a change.

"With Marc, it was almost the scenario concerning his dedication, only he has decided to leave on his own accord. It finally came down to him having to make some hard choices, and due to minor musical differences and many conflicting factors in his personal life, Marc has officially decided to part ways with Katagory V.

"These decisions have come as a huge disappointment for us in Katagory V, and we are certain many of our fans will be disappointed as well. However, we will look ahead, carry on and continue moving on to the next chapter of the band! There were a lot of good times and memories with Lynn and Marc in the band, and there is no doubt that both of their contributions made them an integral part of Katagory V during their tenure. We wish both of them the best in their future endeavors."

Lynn Allers and Marc Hanson's final recorded performance appears on the bands most recent album, Hymns of Dissension which was released September 25th in Europe on Burning Star Records and October 9th in the U.S. on Nightmare Records.

Now with a vacant guitar and singer slot, Katagory V has also announced that they are now ready to move on, and are looking to find a new, more versatile and highly motivated vocalist and guitarist as soon as possible. Interested parties, both locally and nationally, can contact the band directly at vocalist@katagory5.com for more information on the vocalist slot and guitarists can address the band at guitarist@katagory5.com

The third installment of Gigantour - the acclaimed traveling heavy music festival launched in 2005 by Mustaine--will kick off April 12 in Denver, CO with headliner Megadeth, Scandinavian death metal band IN FLAMES, Finland's CHILDREN OF BODOM, Arizona's modern extreme JOB FOR A COWBOY and Oakland, CA heavy power trio HIGH ON FIRE all confirmed. Since its inception in 2005, Gigantour has galvanized bands that emphasize true musicianship and virtuosity, offering them a new opportunity to showcase their talents. "I think that in a small way, we are cleaning up the environment of crappy bands," he says, laughing. "All of the people that really love this kind of music know that they can count on these bands to deliver the goods this year."

In other Megadeth news, the group has officially welcomed new guitarist Chris Broderick (Nevermore, Jag Panzer) to the band after parting ways with Glen Drover - which was hinted at back in November. "I've noticed [on the Internet] that people are pissed with me over the way things were handled with Glen quitting the group," says Mustaine, "but they're gonna be pissed even more when they hear how fierce we are with Chris! Megadeth is playing at a new level." Broderick will make his live debut with Megadeth February 4 in Finland, where the group--guitarist/singer Mustaine, guitarist Broderick, drummer Shawn Drover and James Lomenzo on bass - is kicking off a long string of international dates which wrap March 14 in Bangalore, India. Anything On Fire Completes Songs For Split CD

Anything On Fire featuring the vocals of Adam Cody (vocalist of Century Media’s Glass Casket) has completed two songs with producer/engineer Jamie King (Through the Eyes of the Dead). Both songs will be released on an split EP with post-hardcore NC group Dead Eyes, out January 11th on Forsaken Recordings (Bleeding Through, Demon Hunter). Both songs include guest performances by Between the Buried and Me guitarist, Dustie Waring.

Anything On Fire is a band ten years in the making. Comprised of vocalist Adam Cody, bass player and backing vocalist Justin Reich, drummer Tripp Joye and guitarists Ben Lowe and John Vanderford, the band has been a concept only discussed but never formulated until a year ago. During high school Ben, Tripp and John were members of an industrial band called Trauma Victim. With the advent of college, Trauma Victim ended before its sound could mature. With Justin, Ben, and Tripp recently disbanding from the rock outfit Red Orchestra Radio and Adam on hold with Glass Casket while its core members played with Between the Buried and Me, their collective desire to play something different from what is out there has finally been put into action. Inspired by industrial bands like Skinny Puppy and KMDFM, with heavy influence from post hardcore legends like Botch, their new material is taking shape.

The band has a significant amount of material written, and plans on going back into the studio late 2008, along with a few tours in the works. You can check out one of their songs on the band's MySpace page.

H2O Joins Bridge Nine Roster

Boston's Bridge Nine Records has announced New York's H2O as their latest signing. H2O is currently in the studio with producer Chad Gilbert (Shai Hulud, New Found Glory, Hazen Street) and engineer Paul Miner (Death By Stereo) working on their as-yet untitled fifth full-length CD/LP.

"This is something that we are very excited to announce," said Chris Wrenn, Owner of Bridge Nine Records. "H2O has a long history for both me and everyone who works here and they fit with the label's decade of history and the roster of bands with almost 100 releases. They have a history with Sick Of It All and the guys in Project X, and they fit in well with our current bands like Death Before Dishonor all the way to Crime In Stereo. I remember seeing H2O when I was in college in 1995 and the band was everything hardcore should be - they were energetic, everyone at the show was having fun, and it had such a positive vibe."

Evile In Writing Mode

Guitarist Ol Drake of the up-and-coming UK thrashers EVILE has issued the following update:

"So we've pretty much started writing material for the second album. As some of you might know, we like take a long time writing our stuff, so we might as well start as early as possible."

"Over the past month or so we've been playing around with some new riffs, thinking about re-working old riffs/parts (not neceserilly demo tracks) and using riffs that have been sat there waiting to pulverize people's families."

"Just last night we were jamming through a new song called 'dhgsaghkghsklgsdlhkgfngn' (this'll probably be re-named when we think of a good title) and we got to a part we weren't sure about.
