Veil Of Maya Sign With Sumerian Records
Chicago/Milwaukee-based band VEIL OF MAYA has inked a deal with Sumerian Records.
Commented Sumerian founder Ash Avildsen: "I have a special place in my heart for bands who have stayed together through years of struggling on a DIY level of touring and promotion. This is the world myself and my label manager Shawn both came from. Before MySpace existed, underground metal was a totally different ballgame. Not only does VEIL OF MAYA's work ethic and dedication speak for itself, but so does their level of musicianship and songwriting. Very few bands can authentically mix elements of progressive metal, melodic death metal, thrash and hardcore brutality all while keeping the listener constantly interested. VEIL OF MAYA does this and that’s why they will have a career for years to come." More...

Megadeth Frontman Pitches In For Marines
Dan Lamothe of MarineCorpsTimes.com reports that MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine coordinated the donation of thousands of toys through the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to wildfire victims in the San Diego area, including four pallets that were delivered to Camp Pendleton, California.
The effort was organized with the help of Hasbro Toys, which donated a portion of the thousands of games, block sets and dolls delivered.
Toy deliveries also were made to the chamber of commerce in nearby Fallbrook, California, and to North Coast Church, a Fallbrook church the Mustaine family attends, said Bob Leonard, chief executive officer of the chamber of commerce.
"He's this interesting paradox, with a family who regularly attends church, but he's still involved in that kind of music," said Leonard.
The toys were delivered to the church in part because there are 300 to 400 children of Marine families who attend and have parents deployed at Camp Pendleton, according to a prepared statement by the band.

The young man was apprehended on October 14 after breaking into and setting fires at two Balmoral Street churches. Evidence heard in the case indicates the youth had been influenced by listening to heavy metal music and had learned to make the napalm used to set the fires on the Internet.
Damage to one of the churches was estimated at about $100,000 while the repair bill at the other was about $12,000. The accused was convicted Friday on two counts each of break-and-enter and arson. He'll be sentenced on February 20.

Drowning Pool Bassist Speaks On Stolen Gear
The Pulse of Radio reports: DROWNING POOL was hit with a run of bad luck in the last month and a half, with bassist Stevie Benton stricken with a case of Bell's Palsy onstage and the band's gear getting ripped off not once, but twice. In addition to speakers, drums and other equipment, Benton himself lost four customized Lakeland basses that were his favorites. He told The Pulse of Radio he desperately wants them back. "It's not just the fact of having to go buy new gear," he said. "It's just that, you know, these basses were perfect for me, exactly the way I wanted them and, you know, sentimental value and all that kind of stuff, you know. I'm putting off going and buying anything else, just in the hopes that I can recover them 'cause, you know, I just want them back. No questions asked, no money issue, nothing, you know. I just want those four basses."
Benton was stricken with Bell's Palsy, a nerve disorder which causes partial paralysis of the face, while playing a show in December. Doctors ordered him off the road for six weeks.
DROWNING POOL's rehearsal space was robbed the day before Thanksgiving and then again right before Christmas. The band is asking anyone with information about the stolen gear to contact the Dallas police department or send an email through the band's MySpace page.
DROWNING POOL are no strangers to bad luck, losing original singer Dave Williams to heart disease in 2002.
The band will head out on the road with SALIVA for eight weeks, beginning on February 1 in Atlanta, as it continues promoting its latest album, "Full Circle".
Chaosfear Begin Album Pre- Production
CHAOSFEAR has started the pre-production for their second album.
The album, which has no title yet, will be recorded in the beginning of 2008 and probably will have 10 songs. The album is scheduled to be released this year via OSM Records.
"We are very excited with the new songs. The songs have the same energy as usual, and I believe that they are more aggressive. With the second guitar everything is sounding heavier and there is more focus on solos. We want to play them live as soon as possible", says the drummer Danilo de Freitas.
Stay tuned for further updates.

Ex-Brand New Sin Singer Explains Departure
Lead singer Joe Altier has spoken to Mark Bialczak of the Syracuse Post Standard about his decision to leave of the Syracuse hard rock band BRAND NEW SIN.
"All things come to an end at some point," Altier said. "I guess the best thing is to not get into the politics of the band. We always kept inside things about the band within the band. It was an amicable parting of the ways."
Altier said he began thinking about his life and involvement with BRAND NEW SIN in a different light when his father died in October.
"Something like that, you flip 180," Altier said. "When the dust settles, you see every aspect of your life differently. ... At that point, I realized how quickly life goes by. ... I'm 33. I think it's time to take hold of my life."
Altier will continue with his two side projects. He'll perform solo on Tuesday nights at Station 58 in North Syracuse, playing piano and singing as BRAND NEW JOE. He'll also play there on Wednesday nights with AYLIST, a band with members of UNDER THE GUN and DEAD ROSE.
Drummer Kevin Dean, guitarists Kris Wiechmann and Kenny Dunham and bassist Chuck Kahl will continue playing together with their side cover band, THE UNDESIRABLES, which also includes Grant Waryan and Ronnie Dark, both of whom sing. They play tonight at Downtown Manhattan's in Hanover Square.
Dean said the four want to continue as an original music band, too. He said they're undecided whether they'll keep the name BRAND NEW SIN or how they'll go about linking up with a new lead singer.
BRAND NEW SIN last year parted ways with Century Media Records.
BRAND NEW SIN's acclaimed album "Tequila" was recorded at Method of Groove studios in Brooklyn with producer Joey Z (LIFE OF AGONY, STEREOMUD). The disc, mastered by the acclaimed George Marino (METALLICA, AC/DC, GUNS N' ROSES) at Sterling Sound, features a guest vocal appearance by Peter Steele (TYPE O NEGATIVE) on the track "Reaper Man". The group also recorded a new version of the entrance theme music for Big Show, the 7-foot, 500-pound ECW wrestler. The theme, "Crank It Up", was first heard on the compilation CD "WWE: Wreckless Intent", which debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard chart.

Arthur Alvarez (guitars) states: “With the tragic loss of our great friend and bass player Patrick Jones, we are forced to bring a new member into the band. Adam Swan, our good friend for years has joined the Arsonist camp on bass. All of us have known Adam for years and we couldn’t think of anyone else better fit for the job. Patrick will never be replaced as our bass player, but we are forced to move forward as what he would have wanted. He will always be in our hearts.
“Nick has also decided to step down from playing guitar. He has decided to move on with his life and pursue a different career. We have no hard feelings and wish him the best of luck. He will always remain a close friend whether it is in the band or not. Derek Yarra has joined on guitar and after our first practice with him we are shredding more than ever. This guy is a beast! Be sure to check us on the road in Feb. with My Children My Bride, For The Fallen Dreams and Stray the Path. Be sure to come say hi and make these guys feel at home. Commenting on the upcoming, vocalist Philly states: "When we're not nursing hangovers, we're mega-excited to get to work on Citizen Brain. We've been bashing the songs into shape for months, and they're now ready to really blow some heads up! We're pretty confident that we're about to make a record that's going to win converts. It's going to change people's minds, make them throw out the dross they've been tolerating for the last 15 years and really start thrashing out like big boys again. We'll be sure to pack our thermals, a few cases of special brew and an industrial-sized drum of beans for this one."
Among the tracks set for inclusion are 'Space Invaders', 'Sentenced to Thrash', 'Hammer Slammer' and 'Zombi Brew', the latter also featured on the upcoming Thrashing Like A Maniac compilation due on January 21st, alongside a host of other emerging new thrash acts like EVILE, MUNICIPAL WASTE, DEKAPITATOR and WARBRINGER.

Behemoth Sign With Nuclear Blast Records
Nuclear Blast Records reports:
"Polish Death Metal machine BEHEMOTH has inked a deal with Nuclear Blast for Europe. We are very proud of this newest addition to the NB-Family!
Here´s a statement from A&R manager Jaap Wagemaker: "Behemoth have evolved into one of the best extreme technical metal bands from Europe. Last year, I saw them on stage several times and every time they came, they saw and they conquered, leaving the locations behind in smoke and ashes. This is not a band, this is a force. Nuclear Blast is looking forward to start working with Behemoth and to bring the band to the next level!"
And another statement about the deal from Behemoth mastermind Nergal says: "I have to honestly admit that we’ve never been more enthusiastic about the future. For last few years things have been moving forward for us like a storm and we decided to leave some secured territories and look for a new home for us. We needed something refreshing and challenging at the same time.
Metal Blade [for the US] and Nuclear Blast are two of the strongest and most influential labels in today’s metal scene. Persistence and determination is what we have in common with both and I’m sure our future collaboration will forge a new, inspiring chapter in Behemoth’s history. I simply can’t wait to start working with these companies.
We are proud and honored to be partnering with such greatly forward looking people. Expect big things to happen. Now only sky is the limit.
At the same time I’d like to show my appreciation for all the years of hard work and dedication with our past labels: Century Media and Regain Records. I’m happy that throughout all those years we were not only business partners but also friends. I wish both nothing but success in the future".
The last album from Behemoth, The Apostasy, was released in 2007.

God Forbid Guitarist Speaks On DVD And More
MetalSucks recently had the opportunity to sit down with GOD FORBID guitar player Doc Coyle on the New York stop of their Stillborn Fest tour with HATEBREED, AGNOSTIC FRONT, NECRO, AT ALL COST, and SHAI HULUD. Doc went into detail about what to expect from the band's upcoming DVD release, the band's currently in-the-works album, the art of metal showmanship, and insight into the band's writing process. An excerpt from the chat follows:
MetalSucks: 2008 seems like it's gonna be a big year for you guys. You've got the DVD coming out. Is there any update on that?
Coyle: DVD is pretty much done. We pretty much just need to finish up the editing of the documentary. The concert is pretty much done too. We have to do the menus, and kind of get the final cut on everything. But I'll tell you, the DVD is fucking incredible. Honestly it's one of the best metal DVDs I've ever seen. It came out even better [than the show]… honestly we were so nervous, we didn't know what to expect. We knew the crowd was really good, and that, you know, it went so fast that we just didn't really know what to think. We were just happy with the turnout and everything just seemed like it went really smoothly. But when we went back and looked at all the footage, it looks fucking epic, the look of the whole DVD. We had Eric Rachel who did our last couple of records record it and mix it and it sounds incredible. We're actually gonna release a companion disc with it, because it sounds amazing. We're not the hugest band in the world so I don't know how many people are gonna buy it, but hopefully word of mouth will spread it. At least the people who buy it will pick it up and say, "Damn, that was worth the 15 or 20 or whatever bucks I spent on it."
A lot of bands put out some shitty DVDs. I'm not gonna name any names. But ones where you they shot it with their momma's 1984 VHS, them hangin' out backstage, them prankin' each other and throwin' up on each other and downing beers. It's like… that shit's cool, but we wanted to have a great concert. 'Cause I know when I was a kid I couldn't afford to go to the concert. I watched "Live Shit Binge and Purge" [METALLICA]! That's how a lot of people who have never seen you before are gonna learn about your band, and what it might be like to go to one of your concerts. And we also wanted to show the personality of the band. A lot of people talk about how when they tour with us we're a cast of characters, we're off the wall. A lot of bands bring us on tour 'cause they like hangin' out with us. So we wanted to kinda show people who didn't know us personally what we're all about. And also the story of our band… it's a very interesting story. It's not like a typical success story — like, if you watch the KILLSWITCH DVD it's like, "We did this, and it was amazing. And then we did this, and it was more amazing. And then we got big, and then we got rich!" I mean whatever, they're not, who knows how much money they have. But I'm just saying it's all great stuff, and with us it's like yin and yang — it'll be good, we've had good stuff happen to us and we've had bad stuff. The tale of a struggling, working band, in the fight, but not where they wanna be.
Our shit, the thing about it is it makes us look a lot bigger than we are! The show, the lights looks crazy, we had ten cameras and a fuckin' crane. It was a big show, so it just looks good. We're really happy with it.
MetalSucks: We were talking to Brodsky [Dave Brodsky, director] about it and he was over the moon about it.
Coyle: I can't believe how well it came out. The documentary is fucking incredible. Lex Halaby did it, he did KILLSWITCH's documentary. But ours is just so much edgier. We talk about the race thing, and just the struggles of our band. The shit is the REAL shit. It's fuckin' hilarious. People who are fans of the band are gonna be really stoked on it. Hopefully it'll come out and build some hype before the CD.
MetalSucks: And how far along are you with the new album?
Coyle: We're actually pretty far along. We have three songs compeletly done. We're still tinkering, you know, it's never done till it's done. But we've probably got another 10 or 12 that are almost done or half done, and probably another dozen ideas we haven't even gotten to yet. But we have another two months of straight-up writing and preproduction and we go into the studio in March. It's coming along really well. Sometimes you get so wrapped up in working on it that you don't even know how good it is and how people are gonna react. We've shown some people the songs we've done, and it's been an overwhelming response so far… it's a lot different.
MetalSucks: How so?
Coyle: We're just doing different… trying different types of song. We're not tied into a formula. One song we have, it sounds like a DIMMU BORGIR song. One song sounds like OPETH. Then we've got more stuff like "To the Fallen Hero", more hook-oriented stuff too. And some really technical stuff. Some super, heavy slow stuff. In a way not being a massive band like KILLSWITCH or LAMB OF GOD or SLAYER, you don't have as much to risk as far as trying different things. I don't know, we're trying to make an impact.

Detonation To Headline Avalanche Festival
Dutch melodic thrashers DETONATION will headline the Avalanche festival in Delhi, India on February 22. Avalanche is the heavy-music portion of the four-day cultural Moksha festival, an annual event organized at the Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (N.S.I.T.).

Past few years, however, the Indian metal scene has been growing rapidly with a new breed a quality metal bands emerging, and with renowned international acts as MEGADETH, IRON MAIDEN and SEPULTURA announcing tours to India. We're very excited to be among the first wave of international metal acts to play Indian and very proud to be the first heavy Dutch act ever to do so".
DETONATION's latest effort, "Emission Phase", was released on April 30, 2007. The CD was recorded with Split Second Sound's Jochem Jacobs (also guitar player for TEXTURES) and Bouke Visser. The cover artwork was created by Eliran Kantor.

Early Crimson Glory Albums To Be Re-released
Poland's Metal Mind Productions will re-release the first CRIMSON GLORY albums — the self-titled debut and the follow-up, "Transcendence" — on February 4 in Europe (April 15 in the U.S. via MVD). Each remastered limited-edition digipack title (limited to 2,000 copies) will include a bonus track ("Crimson Glory" will come with the extra cut "Dream Dancer" while "Transcendence" will include a remix of the song "Lonely") and will be made available on golden disc, digitally remastered using 24-bit technology.
As previously reported, former and current CRIMSON GLORY vocalists Midnight and Wade Black will join forces on several upcoming projects.
Black will sing on Midnight's upcoming MIDNIGHT "M2" album. Black has also revealed that Midnight will perform a series of acoustic shows and that he will join Midnight on stage for several songs. They will also perform together with their solo bands, MIDNIGHT and DISASTERPEACE.
Wade Black returned to front CRIMSON GLORY in January 2007 after original singer Midnight was arrested in Sarasota, Florida and charged with "DUI [driving under the influence] with .20 [blood-alcohol level] or higher or having a passenger under 18" years of age, according to a police report.
Black sang on CRIMSON GLORY's 1999 "comeback" CD, "Astronomica".
Cannibal Corpse Want To Enter Studio In September
CANNIBAL CORPSE bassist Alex Webster has issued the following update:
"My wife and I will be attending the NAMM show in Anaheim next week, so if any of you are going to the show, maybe we'll see you there. I'm not doing any signings or presentations or anything like that, but I will be there as a guest of Spector basses. I'll also be dropping by the Modulus, DR Strings, and Ampeg booths, so you might see me somewhere around there too.
"Also, in case you didn't see the announcement on HATE ETERNAL's site last month, I won't be playing bass on their upcoming tours. Although it would have been a lot of fun, we all knew from the beginning that I'd probably just do the studio session, and that's the way things turned out. It just seemed like there would be some serious schedule conflicts, so they decided to look for a bassist who could be fully dedicated to touring with them this year. Those guys are beginning a tour next week, so be sure to catch them if they come through your area. Also, their new album, 'Fury and Flames', will be released on February 20th, so check it out. It's a truly savage album, and I'm proud they let me be a part of it.
"In CANNIBAL news, we have started writing, and things are coming along well. We are hoping to enter the studio in September of this year, so that would mean our next album will be released sometime in 2009.
"As for BLOTTED SCIENCE [the instrumental extreme metal triumvirate featuring guitarist Ron Jarzombek (WATCHTOWER, SPASTIC INK, MARTY FRIEDMAN), Webster, and drummer Charlie Zeleny (BEHOLD...THE ARCTOPUS, JORDAN RUDESS)], we have been enjoying a very positive response to the release of our debut album, 'The Machinations of Dementia', and I'd like to say thank you to everybody out there who has bought the album or supported us in any way. A lot of people have been asking when and if we'll play live, and I still don't know the answer to that. If we ever did plan something it would be posted on BLOTTED's MySpace page, so check there for updates."

Terror Syndrome Post Mixing Update
THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND drummer Ryan Van Poederooyen has issued the following update on the status of the as-yet-unreleased debut album from his Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada-based band TERROR SYNDROME:
"So, here's an update on mixing... Just got a song back from Devin [Towsend, who is mixing the album]. He's been working on 'When God Was Sober' first.
"Holy fucking shit!!!! It sounds amazing!!!! Devin has done exactly what I wanted and then some!!! The sonic tones, the vibe, the aggression and the overall sound of the first song is incredible. His production ideas for mixing are brilliant. He's added a couple mixing ideas to 'Sober' that make the song even more impactful. What he's done with Denton's [Bramley] vocals is perfect, Dev has a very clean vocal sound and uses killer effects and the right ideas when called for. The guitars and bass rip your face off with killer presence, accuracy and aggression and the drums are very punchy, precise and big sounding. That's why we wanted to use Devin for mixing; he knows how a metal record should sound and knows how to get the sounds and ideas across to the listener. You all are in for one hell of an awesome sounding record, this I promise you!
"Devin was saying that we should have the album mixed and delivered by month's end, then on to mastering and then.... well, you'll see! I can't wait to show you TERROR SYNDROME in its finished state. Exciting times for sure!"
TERROR SYNDROME is:
Mike Young (THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND) - Bass
Dave Young (THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND) - Guitar
Denton Bramley (ex-GOD AWAKENS PETRIFIED, THE MISERABLES) - Vocals
Ryan Van Poederooyen (THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND) - Drums
Guest musicians on TERROR SYNDROME's upcoming debut CD include Alex Skolnick (TESTAMENT), Trevor Dunn (MR. BUNGLE, FANTOMAS), Devin Townsend (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND), Byron Stroud (FEAR FACTORY, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD) and Christofer Malmström (DARKANE).
TERROR SYNDROME debut CD tentative track listing:
01. Stupidity For All
02. Revolving Horror
03. Thrill Pill
04. Riot Of Red (feat. Christofer Malmström)
05. When God Was Sober
06. Motionless
07. Rusty Trombone (feat. Alex Skolnick and Trevor Dunn)
08. One Crime Closer to Hell
09. Disposable Empire (feat. Byron Stroud)
10. For Your Amusement
11. My Next Victim
12. Spinning Backwards (feat. Devin Townsend and Michael Manring)

Opeth Complete New Album
OPETH leader Mikael Åkerfeldt has issued the following update:
"As some of you might know Opeth is doing a pretty rare gig on March 8th. A big fucking boat will be crossing the Nordic sea in the middle of the night, and onboard you'll hear some Swedish fucking prog whatever bollocks death type music! The Mellotronen store (the company sponsoring the event) has now closed down but you can reach them through their website at Mellotronen.com and read the blog about this event. You can also see the concert poster artwork, done by Roger Wooton and Glen Goring from COMUS. For me, this is insanely awesome that they've created this one especially for this event.??This gig will be our warm up for the coming UK and US tour and we are most likely going to premier a new song on there plus a few old tunes. On top of that Comus are playing (for the first time since 1972), KATATONIA, LEAFHOUND, ANEKDOTEN, the legendary BO HANSSON and many more. There are some planned secret appearances that I can't really speak of but they will become legendary, no question about it.??It will be a nice trip I'm sure, lots of talk about obscure bands, lots of drinking, gambling (not me) and stuff like that. Maybe some of you will get lucky. I'll be nervous but it'll be awesome. Hope to see some of you there. I don't know how big the capacity of this boat is but I certainly advise you guys to check out the availability of the tickets well in advance as this is a one-time only happening.??Anything else? Hmmmm... let's see... Oh, of course! The album is done, mixed and all. I'm listening to it right now. I want to boast, but I'll keep it together and do it later instead. More info on this soon!"

AC/DC Apparantly Not In The Studio
According to Tim Cashmere Undercoverhd.com, AC/DC are not in the studio, they are not recording with Mutt Lange and they don't have a title for an album which has been widely reported to be called Strap It On.
Following stories that the band have returned to the studio for their first album since 2000's Stiff Upper Lip, Albert Records' Danny Keenan has told Undercover they're hopeful, but it's not the case.
"If you ask me if they're in the studio today, I can tell you they're not. If you ask me if they were in the studio last week, I can tell you they're not. If you ask me if they're in the studio next week, I can tell you they're not.
"We're pretty hopeful, but unfortunately there is no word of an album at this stage."

KINGDOM OF SORROW, the new project featuring HATEBREED frontman Jamey Jasta and DOWN/CROWBAR's Kirk Windstein, has finalized the track listing for its debut album, due on February 19 via Relapse Records (February 25 internationally).
Jasta (HATEBREED, ICEPICK) and Windstein (DOWN, CROWBAR) came together some three years ago to create KINGDOM OF SORROW, and in that time put together an album's worth of crushing American metal.
The KINGDOM OF SORROW album was recorded at Planet Z Studios in Massachusetts with producer Zeuss (HATEBREED, SHADOWS FALL). Preview tracks can be heard now via the band's official MySpace page. More...

"New" Nasum Album Coming This Year
COLDWORKER/ex-NASUM drummer Anders Jakobson has issued the following update:
"So how about this — there will be a new NASUM album in 2008! Yes, a final album and then nothing more. It's the live recording from Japan 2004 that has been in the archives for quite a while. It's a little bit confusing but I'll try to explain everything as clear as possible:"
"First, there will be a split with NAPALM DEATH, a limited-edition picture disc released by Feto very soon... Can't really be specific about the release date at this point."
"Then, the NASUM side of the split will be a stand-alone CD called 'Doombringer' on Relapse. This is a digipack release that apart from the 16 songs also will include Mitch Harris video for 'Scoop' and liner notes by me. The album will be released March 4th and can be pre-ordered from Relapse now. There might be an LP version of 'Doombringer' as well; I have at least OK'd the artwork for the LP."
Here is the "Doombringer" (cover artwork) track listing: More...
