Angel Blake Announce New Record Deal and Singer

ANGEL BLAKE, the Swedish band featuring former THE CROWN guitarist Marko Tervonen, has inked a deal with Dynamic Arts Records. In addition, the group has announced the addition of singer Tobias Jansson following the departure of former TRANSPORT LEAGUE/MNEMIC frontman Tony Jelencovich.

Commented Marko: "I was acquainted with the vocals of one Tobias Jansson since months back due to mutual friends. So I got in touch with him, talked with him, popped the question, and a few days later we were demoing some new ANGEL BLAKE songs. I guess the simplest conclusion to that session is that HE KICKED ASS!!!!! He managed to deliver something really extraordinary into the AB sound that wasn’t simply there before. He definitely managed to convince me and the rest of the ANGEL BLAKE team. With my humble words: Tobias has a very 'in-your-face' vocal style that shares the honesty of singers like Eddie Vedder, Robert Plant the style that really brings forth the 'honesty' in the voice. And the man's vocal range is something I really embrace, goddamned!!! You're in it for a real treat, ladies and gentlemen, if you pick up the forthcoming album, mark my words." More...

Nick Barker Joins Atrocity And Leaves' Eyes

The new drummer of ATROCITY and LEAVES' EYES is Nick Barker, who has previously played with CRADLE OF FILTH, DIMMU BORGIR and TESTAMENT. Says ATROCITY/LEAVES' EYES vocalist/producer Alex Krull, "It's with great pleasure that we can announce Nick Barker is joining the ATROCITY and LEAVES' EYES family! We always were great fans of his way of drumming, and we are happy that we will kick some ass in the future together! Nick was our No. 1 choice! When we heard he would join us, we invited him right away!"

Here's a short interview with Nick Barker about his decision to join the two bands:

Q: Nick, how long do you know Alex and the guys of ATROCITY and LEAVES' EYES?

Nick: "I've known ATROCITY for many years, I think the first time we met was on the DEICIDE/ATROCITY tour in 1992 when I was the drum tech for support band CANCER, and since that time we've always ran into each other on the European summer festival circuit during the years that followed. Whenever I would play in the Stuttgart area with any of my previous bands, some of the guys would always be there and show their support."

Q: How did it come about that you joined the two bands now?

Nick: "Alex approached me at the Metal Hammer award ceremony in London last June (2007) and said that he was looking for a drummer that could handle the complexity and savagery of ATROCITY as well as the softer, more groove-laden beauty of LEAVES' EYES, and he thought I could be the right man to do both jobs. I had some prior commitments and obligations to fulfil at that time, but we spoke over the Christmas period and arranged for me to come to Stuttgart and audition; everything was fantastic both musically and from a social and personal aspect."

Q: How do you like the music of both bands? They are quite different from each other.

Nick: "I absolutely love the diversity of both bands. With ATROCITY, you have such brutal songs from the 'Atlantis' album such as 'Reich Of Phenomena', 'Apocaplyse' and 'Clash Of Titans', which I can't wait to play live and sink my teeth into. Then, on the other hand, you have LEAVES' EYES, which for me is something very new and very exciting as a drummer coming from a mainly black/death metal background. Liv has the most beautiful voice in the whole world within this genre, and the music is very moving, beautifully crafted and almost spiritual."

Q: You just jammed the first time with the guys at Mastersound Studio. How was it? What are your impressions?

Nick: "When I first arrived at Mastersound Studios, my first impression was 'WOW!!!' I had no idea of the sheer scale of dedication, time, money and professionalism that had been invested into the studio itself. Over the years, I have been in many first-class recording studios myself, but I have to say, Mastersound is a cut above the rest.The whole band were extremely friendly and there was an overwhelming sense of 'family' among them all, which made me feel very relaxed and at ease almost immediately. We jammed some classic songs by METALLICA, SLAYER and MORBID ANGEL to warm up before concentrating on the more serious matters of LEAVES' EYES and ATROCITY, and like I said earlier, everything was fantastic, both musically and socially."

Q: What are you going to do next with the two bands?

Nick: "Next up is a video shoot with ATROCITY in Berlin next month for the 'Werk 80 II' album, and then in March, LEAVES' EYES will play in Mexico City. April we will be working our asses off writing songs for the new LEAVES' EYES record in the brand new, relocated Mastersound studios. In May, LEAVES' EYES and ATROCITY will tour Asia (China, Taiwan, etc) for the first time ever. Upon our return from the Orient, we will continue to work hard on the new record, which is planned for an autumn 2008 release."

Vomitory Complete Work On New Album

Swedish death metallers VOMITORY have issued the following update:

"We have now finally completed our sixth album, Terrorize Brutalize Sodomize. I say 'finally' because it has been three long years since our last album, Primal Massacre, saw the light of day. We're totally satisfied with how it all turned out - the production is top-notch, the songs and our performances are at their best and the variation in the songs is better than ever before. The album has some of the fastest shit we've ever done as well as some of the heaviest. The album contains forty minutes of death fucking metal!"

The tracklisting for Terrorize Brutalize Sodomize is as follows: 'Eternal Trail Of Corpses', 'Scavenging The Slaughtered', 'Terrorize Brutalize Sodomize', 'The Burning Black', 'Defiled And Inferior', 'March Into Oblivion', 'Whispers From The Dead', 'Heresy', 'Flesh Passion', and 'Cremation Ceremony'.

Warrel Dane's Debut Album Tracklisting Revealed

NEVERMORE frontman WARREL DANE's upcoming debut solo effort will be titled Praise To The War Machine and is due for release in April via Century Media Records.

Ex-SOILWORK guitarist-turned-producer Peter Wichers mixed songs for the album at a studio in Philadelphia, PA.

The complete Praise To The War Machine tracklisting: 'When We Pray', 'Messenger' (featuring Jeff Loomis), 'Obey', 'Lucretia My Reflection', 'Let You Down' (featuring Chris Broderick), 'August', 'Your Chosen Misery' (aka 'Feel Failure'), 'Praise To The Warmachine' (featuring James Murphy), 'Brother', 'Patterns', 'This Old Man', 'Aeon'.

About the album, Wichers told BW&BK that Dane "does some really different stuff. He’s actually a baritone, for example, which is kind of funny when you think about how he sings on a Nevermore record, but he can’t use that voice in Nevermore because you wouldn’t be able to hear him. He’s doing all kinds of different vocal things on this. And there are a couple songs where he’s singing really low. Everything is shaped so that Warrel is in focus at all times. I think people are going to love the record because Warrel is getting all the space he needs. There’s one song where there’s one clean guitar in the middle, but that’s it. He fills everything else up with different harmonies and stuff like that. It’s very different from anything he’s done before.”

The Ocean Seek New Bassist

Berlin's THE OCEAN has issued the following update:

"It seems like this issue always comes back to us... Due to THE OCEAN's collective's current bass players' inability to cope with our heavy touring schedules, we need a new bass player for all our upcoming touring activities. What we're looking for is a nice, sociable guy with the following:

* skills
* dedication
* experience
* smooth and precise playing, good tone, finger and pick
* time for extensive tours
* ability to read sheet music not necessary, but advantageous
* high level of tolerance for the typical on-the-road stress
* located in Europe

"If you're a bass player (and not just a bass-playing guitarist), please write an email to info@theoceancollective.com and tell us about yourself. Be prepared to be on the road nonstop between mid-March and mid-July in the U.S., Europe and Russia. This is your chance to join us! We're looking forward to hearing from you!"

THE OCEAN's extensive concept album, "Precambrian", was released last Novemebr via Metal Blade Records. The double-disc effort is the soundtrack to the beginning of evolution, subdivided into two successive geological eons ("Hadean/Archean" and "Proterozoic"). The songs are divided into five subordinate eras, with the songtitles carrying the names of subordinate geological periods. Disc 1 features the typical THE OCEAN brutality while Disc 2 shows the deeper, more emotional side of what the collective also stands for.

"Precambrian" is available as a deluxe digipack and was recorded in the band's own Oceanland studio as well as in Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Los Angeles and Seattle. Once again the incredible artwork was done by highly acclaimed artist Martin Kvamme (FANTOMAS, TOMAHAWK, PATTON/KAADA).

"Precambrian" has a running time of 84 minutes and features guest appearances by Scofield (CAVE IN, ZOZOBA, OLD MAN GLOOM), Nate Newton (CONVERGE, DOOMRIDERS), Dwid Hellion (INTEGRITY), Tomas Hallbom (BREACH), Eric Kalsbeek (TEXTURES) as well as the musicians of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Negative Split With Guitarist

Finnish rockers NEGATIVE check in with the following update:

"Negative's longtime guitarist Sir Christus is no longer in the band, Negative will start recording their fourth album as a five-piece.

“We decided that it’s best to continue without Sir Christus. This is not a hasty decision, we’ve talked about this many times and this is really the best thing for all of us. There’s no hard feelings on either side”, says lead singer Jonne Aaron.

“It’s just like any long-lasting relationship, people can grow apart and end up wanting different things. Negative will of course keep going on, no doubt about that, this will not affect our future plans”, Jonne continues. "

Negative will start the recording sessions for their fourth album with producer Mikko Karmila (NIGHTWISH, CHILDREN OF BODOM) in February.

“We feel very confident about the new songs, and the mood inside the band is relaxed and relieved. We’re concentrating 100% on the new album now, and we’ll bring in the new guitarist on the gigs following the release of our new record. We’ll let you know more when we have something to tell you”, Jonne says.

Aeturnus Dominion Seek New Vocalist

Australian metallers, Aeturnus Dominion, issue the following update on their myspace page:

"Unfortunately, Aeturnus Dominion are reluctantly forced to announce that Mares will no longer be fronting the band as from the 19th of January. The reason for this, is purely a productive one and due to the fact she lives more than 4 hours away from the rest of us and has no means of transport other than public. Her vocal ability, personality, stage presence and musicianship has never been an issue and still isn't. Having to make this decision has gutted me personally, but is done in the best interests of the band."

"When she was accepted into the band it was partly on the basis she was moving to Sydney and for reasons beyond her control, this unfortunately didn't happen. The distance she has to travel and the cost for her to do so, meant she was unable to attend rehearsals on a regular basis, which is unfair on her and unfair on us. This in turn slowed the bands progress to a point where it was unacceptable to continue the way things were going. I'd personally like to thank Mares for the time and effort she has put into the band and wish her every success in the future as do other members of Aeturnus Dominion. I do hope our friendship continues as I have done with every past member of AD." More...

Extreme Guitarist Issues Album Update

Guitarist Nuno Bettencourt of the reunited hard rockers EXTREME has issued the following update:

"We are now finishing up the recording of our new release... which, by the way, rocks. We had a great time jamming and creating. We ended up with about 24 tunes, which we dwindled down to the 14 that will be on the record. And I'm sure it's no surprise to you, our fans, that they are a 'mishmash' of old-school rock and some tasty abstract ditties.

"As a band, we always manage to be misfits in the midst of whatever music is out there. But I guarantee it will be delicious. We are very, very excited to share it with you. Both on record and live when we come to your town... and WE WILL. Yes... we plan to tour for at least one year — well, probably two years — 'cause we've got a lot of catching up to do with you guys and gals. And we can't fucking wait... Shit! There I go fucking swearing again... What a prick... Anyways.

"It's also great to welcome Kevin 'Figg' Figuieredo to the family. I could say lots about Figg and what he brings to the intensity and sound of this band in 2008... but in the words of Joe Perry... I will 'let the music do the talking.'

"And when I speak about the EXTREME family, I also want to mention that Paul Geary [former EXTREME drummer and current GODSMACK manager] is still very much a part of the family. I'm very excited to tell you that he will be involved in the managerial side of the band, working closely with us and new addition to our business team, Robby Hoffman, to help reclaim our block of land in the music ghetto.

"Yes... Lock up your daughters and lock up your wife... Lock up your backdoor and run for your life. 'Cause once we move back in, we plan to be around for the rest of our days... God willing... however long that may be.

"Well... that's it for now. Whoever is making the trip to L.A. to see us... see ya there and say hello. We will have a drink at the Hilton bar afterwards. And for the rest of you, see ya soon..."

EXTREME — featuring original members Nuno Bettencourt, Gary Cherone, Pat Badger and new sticksman Kevin Figueiredo — will perform a private show at NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) on Friday, January 18 at the Hilton in Anaheim, California.

To win a chance to see the group play live, submit your name, city and e-mail address to namm@extreme-band.com. If you are selected, you will be contacted with a time and a location to pick up tickets the day of the show.

EXTREME's as-yet-untitled studio album with all-new material — the band's fifth — is set to be released in the spring.

In a recent interview with BostonHerald.com, Bettencourt described the new album as a "straight-up rock record" that expands on EXTREME's funk-metal sound.

The new CD was the key to getting back together as a full-time band, he said. EXTREME did a handful of gigs last summer, including a gig at the Bank of America Pavilion in July, but Bettencourt wasn't interested in becoming a permanent part of a nostalgia act.

"Even though we wanted to do something for years, we had to have something new to offer," he told BostonHerald.com. "In the last six months we started writing some great songs. If they weren't, we wouldn't be doing this."

Dillinger Escape Plan Singer Discusses Disney Ban

Arielle Castillo of Broward-Palm Beach New Times recently conducted an interview with THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN frontman Greg Puciato. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

New Times: I was talking to Andy from EVERY TIME I DIE earlier. He mentioned you all [KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, and EVERY TIME I DIE] had been friends and had been wanting to set up a tour. Who approached whom?

Greg: We went to see EVERY TIME I DIE open for UNDEROATH in New York. We were hanging out with them and Jordan, their guitar player, was like, "Oh so I heard you guys were doing this KILLSWITCH ENGAGE tour in January." And I was like, "Oh really, we are?" And he was like, "Yeah, a big part of the reason we signed on was because we saw you guys had."

New Times: You didn't know?

Greg: That's kind of the way it works. I read it on the Internet sometimes, what I'm gonna be doing. I don't know whether I missed that e-mail or what happened, but some other band told me what I was doing in January.

New Times: What about KILLSWITCH, did you know those guys very well already?

Greg: We've played in Japan together three or four years ago. We know them more because we're from the same scene or so forth. They were fans of ours a long time ago before they became much bigger than us. Howard [Jones, KSE's singer] was always very vocal in his liking for us.

I feel like we've been talking about touring for years, but it just never happened. We've had the misfortune of having our records seem to come out at opopsite ends of the release cycles for a while. All these bands we talk about touring with — MASTODON is another one – we're never on the same timeline.

New Times: I have to ask about the House of Blues in Orlando thing.

Greg: Oh no.

New Times: Well, so Disney didn't want you to play, but the other bands were okay?

Greg: It's really weird to me, because we've played House of Blues three or four times and brought in a lot of kids most of the times we've played there. We've never done anything bad at the House of Blues. We've been banend from certain venues, and I know why, because there was a giant fireball curling across the ceiling, or we pissed someone else off.

But at House of Blues we've always had great shows. It was very shocking for me, because I don't know if they think it's gonna draw a cerain kind of kid? But they're trying to say we're not in conjunction with the image they're trying to portray at Disney World. But then — you're gonna have a band called KILLSWITCH ENGAGE play? Or a band called EVERY TIME I DIE?

But it doesn't really matter because they're still paying us, and we're playing another show in the same day. It's like if your boss was just like, "Fuck you, you can't come to work, and you're getting getting paid anyways." So we'll be getting paid double — we're going to play an early show that day, at like 4:30 p.m. at a venue called the Social, and we're going to make tickets really cheap.

New Times: So you joined the band in 2001 after it was already established. Do you think people have finally accepted you as part of the fabric of the band?

Greg: Oh, definitely, that was over six years ago. I don't think people even think about it at this point, in 2008. We're probably three or four times as big as when I joined, which is funny because at the time I joined I thought we were massive. I thought getting 200 kids outside of your hometown, in a place like Seattle or Portland, was insane. But that was a long time ago, and people who came to see our band back then are probably older and don't come now. Most kids at this point know there was a singer before me, but I don't think they think about it.

New Times: Do you then think you have a whole new set of fans at this point?

Greg: I think a lot of the original ones stayed, but I don't necessarily think they actively go to shows any more. They have lives, and maybe wives and kids. It's crazy to me because I'll see bands play, and a kid from the band will come up to me and be like, "Dude, you were a huge influence on me, I saw you guys play when I was 17 or 16," and the kid's band is almost as big as we are.

Because in my eyes, I haven't really aged, because I haven't really done anything but play shows and write records. All the other landmarks people have — kids, school, getting married — I don't have. My friends who live at home have those things. My lifestyle is basically the same thing, and I still don't look that different, so I have a hard time accepting I'm getting older.

Celtic Frost Mainman Speaks On Hellhammer

CELTIC FROST frontman Thomas Gabriel Fischer recently discussed the difficulties he and bassist Martin Ain have had in coming to terms with the legacy of their former band HELLHAMMER. Speaking to the UK's Zero Tolerance magazine about the forthcoming Century Media release "Demon Entrails", which brings together HELLHAMMER's legendary demos, the Swiss guitarist/ vocalist said: "It took many years, and for us to grow into older men, for us to actually be able to analyze HELLHAMMER properly and look at this band in the context that it deserves... The fact of the matter is that it took me years to feel at ease with some of the things that we wrote back then. The situation at the time was horrible. [My] youth defies description — there are things that happened then that I haven't told anybody, not even my ex-wife of 16 years. But I'm now 43 years old and it's taken that long for me to feel comfortable publicly talking about that. It was horrible at the time and my situation, and Martin's rather similar situation, led us to do some radical music and radical lyrics. And later when we became adults it was rather difficult for us to live with that legacy because we had yelled that desperation out of our bodies and become professional musicians. Then the press started to cover our work and then we were faced with the fact that everybody talked about this image and these lyrics. That wasn't very easy for us to accept and it took a long time for me to look at it, as I do now, as a period in my life that was very important to me and to be at ease with that. Now I have put all these lyrics in the reissue and commented on them and even though some of them are nothing to be proud about, I'm proud of HELLHAMMER as a whole. This was my reality, this was my life."

Issue 021 of Zero Tolerance magazine goes on sale on January 15. Joining HELLHAMMER inside are HATE ETERNAL, DEICIDE, FOREFATHER and ROTTEN SOUND, not to mention a preview of 2008, complete with a swash-buckling shipping forecast courtesy of Scottish pirates ALESTORM, a free 16-track covermount CD and much more.

Due on February 18, 2008, "Demon Entrails" has been specially remastered from copies of the original master tapes under the supervision of Tom Gabriel Fischer, and the demos now represent HELLHAMMER exactly as the band sounded when recording these songs in June and December of 1983. Drawing from a wealth of previously unknown historical liner notes material and artwork as well as plenty of unreleased HELLHAMMER photos from 1982 to 1984, "Demon Entrails" features all lyrics and essays detailing the individual demo recording sessions.

Here is the tracklisting information for the CD formats of the release:

Moonspell To Release New Album In May

As previously reported, MOONSPELL are currently holed up at Antfarm Studios in Denmark with producer Tue Madsen working on their new album, Night Eternal. Frontman Fernando Ribeiro comments on the album concept, release dates and tour plans:

"The concept refers to the 'wear and the tear of the Earth,' how we are consuming its energy and its vital force and how it will take its revenge upon us. Memorial's musical line was taken a step further and Night Eternal will be a quite intense album itself, darkly atmospheric yet really heavy and catchy. In Night Eternal expect nothing but great guitar riffs, breathtaking songs and epic atmospheres.

The exact release date will be announced soon yet the album is coming out in May. The band is totally enthusiastic and eager to release it and to present it to the fans and hopes to be able to post some songs online on moonspell.com and myspace.com/moonspell as soon as the promos are ready for the press, around one and a half month before the record is released.

Live shows are now being booked for 2008 and the band is already confirmed for festivals in Czech Republic, Spain, and Germany and a US tour as well as a Euro tour will be announced as well as visits to other territories, some of them for the first time."
