Led Zeppelin Guitarist To Hold Press Conference?

According to a posting on the LED ZEPPELIN fan site Royal-Orleans.com, ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page will hold a press conference at Park Hyatt Hotel in Shinjyuku, Japan on Monday, January 28. Park Hyatt is reportedly the hotel Jimmy stayed at during the 1996 PAGE & PLANT tour.

Times Online reported in December that LED ZEPPELIN could earn well over £100 million (approximately $200 million) if the hard-rock band went on tour this year in the wake of last month's triumphant reunion gig. The band is being pursued with offers from both Live Nation and AEG, the rival concert promoters, with each structuring bids in the form of a large upfront payment to lure the band to their venues.

One source said that "AEG put a bid in on the night" — although that could not be confirmed independently — but intense demand would probably make a ZEPPELIN reunion the most sought-after ticket in 2008.

The reluctance of Robert Plant, the lead singer, still makes a tour far from certain, although the three other band members are believed to be willing to go ahead. Venues in America have been held open in the hope that Plant will say yes.

It is likely that the four-piece band would be able at least to match the estimated $212 million grossed by THE POLICE for their reunion last year, according to figures compiled by Billboard, the industry magazine.

Shining Albums To Be Re-Released

UK label Peaceville, home to venerable bands such as DARKTHRONE and KATATONIA, will re-release two albums from controversial Swedish black metallers SHINING. "IV: The Eerie Cold" and "III: Angst, Självdestruktivitetens Emissarie" will be issued on June 9 and July 21, respectively.

Niklas Kvarforth, SHINING vocalist and the band's creator, has recently been resting his voice following minor surgery for nodules on his throat. Commented a representative for the band: "The surgery was nothing to worry about. Nodules are a hazard of the trade for vocalists, especially if they use the 'extreme' style of singing, which Kvarforth does, of course. Surgery was timed to fit in between the end of the band's recent European tour with SKITLIV and HELLSAW, and before the start of the festival season. He's fit and well now, and ready to perform at the Brutal Brutality festival this weekend."

Kvarforth recently joined Maniac's band SKITLIV, playing guitar and sharing writing duties on the music side with the former MAYHEM vocalist in a band that owes as much to the doom and noise genres as it does to black metal, and allows Kvarforth more freedom to improvise on stage.

VR Bassist Speaks On STP Rumours And Sundance

UK's Classic Rock magazine has tracked down VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES bassist Duff McKagan and quizzed him about VR singer Scott Weiland's absence from the group's performance at the Sundance Film Festival and the rumors of a reunion of Weiland's previous band, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS.

On the Sundance Film Festival:

"I sang 'It's So Easy' and 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' and then we were panicking a bit over what to play so [VR drummer] Matt [Sorum] got up and sang 'Patience', Matt's a great singer, he really is. Why wasn't Scott there? Scott missed his plane. Yeah, let's say that, Scott missed his plane…"

On STONE TEMPLE PILOTS reforming:

"That’s the rumor that I've heard too. Good for him. You can't plan ahead in this thing and if you do, you're going to be disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I love playing live and we love this band, but I don't have expectations any more. This is a great band and I'm proud to be a part of it, but it doesn't define me anymore."

Although there has been no official confirmation from anyone involved, Weiland told the Miami Herald over the weekend to be on the lookout for a STONE TEMPLE PILOTS reunion in the months ahead. The band members are reportedly on good terms again after their less than friendly break-up in 2002, and Weiland told The Pulse of Radio a while back that he wouldn't rule out getting back together. "I think that there is always that distinct possibility," he said. "I have to say it would never come in the way of VELVET REVOLVER, but I don't think that the story has been completely told. I'm unhappy with the ending of the story."

Weiland made his comments at an all-star gala event benefiting the AROD Family Foundation, on Saturday (January 19) at the Ritz Carlton hotel in South Beach, Florida.

Mastodon Appear On Bowling Show

VBS.tv's Rory Ahearn reports:

"In the debut episode of the series, VBS takes on the guys of MASTODON in the game of bowling. Despite ringing in Scott Martin from CROM the hometeam still gets its ass handed to them. Er, I mean, could very easily win or lose. Actually I'm seeing them tonight with NEUROSIS. Face melting."

VBS Bowler/Ad Salesman/Blackout Man/All Around Good Guy John Martin reminisces about his laneside encounter with Mastodon:

"My surprise was learning that Mastodon knew how to bowl, and were actually damn good at it. I was also shocked to find out that bowling is taught at some institutes of higher learning and that Mastodon attended college, which is where they learned how to bowl. One other surprise that I should have seen coming: Whenever someone says they’re “awesome at bowling”, they’re usually not. The good bowlers don’t say shit - they just smugly sip their beer after beating you by over 100 points, game after game. Cheers, fuckers."

Thrice's "The Alchemy Index: Vols. III & IV" Set

The much anticipated second installment of Thrice's "The Alchemy Index, Vols. III & IV: Earth & Air " will be available April 15th, 2008, via Vagrant Records. On Earth & Air, the band channels a panorama of musical moods and soundscapes, creating a spectral beauty of inspiring sound.

A departure from songwriting tactics used on all prior releases, The Alchemy Index was done in the band’s own studio and engineered by guitarist Teppei Teranishi, without the assistance of an outside producer. “Although we wrote and recorded all 4 discs in the same time period, there was definitely and different approach to each one,” says singer Dustin Kensrue. Armed with completely open minds and lacking any conceptions as to what this release would bring the newest collection of songs from Thrice is a passionate and beaming follow-up to their celebrated, Fire & Water.

From the introductory notes of “Digging My Own Grave,” on the Earth disc, to the sprawling echoed chords of “Come All You Weary,” Thrice have ventured into and conquered a new land in paramount proportions. More...
