Interview

Bane Vocalist Aaron Bedard Interviewed

Bane is a hardcore punk band legendary for its high energy shows, sing-along anthems, kindness and honesty towards fans, and promotion of tolerance and unity within the hardcore scene.

The band began as a side project between Aaron Dalbec (then of Converge) and Damon Bellardo. Inevitably Dalbec approached Aaron Bedard (who had previously sung for the hardcore band Backbone) about singing for Bane.

They went into the studio in December of 1995 with a few friends and released a 5 song demo. The next year saw the release of their first EP, and many shows throughout central Massachusetts. Spring of 1997 saw the release of the Free To Think, Free To Be EP, where 1998 saw the release of the Holding This Moment 7" and CD collection, plus their first US Tour. In 2001 Give Blood was released and national/international tours followed.

In earlier albums Bane claimed straight-edge (lifestyle whose adherents abstain from alcohol, smoking, recreational drug use, and promiscuity) however it was never their main political focus. They still perform early songs with straight edge references, such as "Count Me Out" which includes the lyric "Just like this X on the back of my hand, I'm not going nowhere." However, the lyrics to the song "Wasted On The Young," on Bane's latest album, "The Note," can be interpreted as criticism of people who ignorantly claim straight edge too early in their life.

I sat down with Aaron Bedard upstairs at The Knitting Factory in New York City to get personal about their most recent album, "The Note," and experiences on the road. More...

Mower Seek New Musicians

Frontman Brian Sheerin of San Diego, California's MOWER, who just recently completed a tour supporting DIECAST, has checked in with the following recap of 2007:

"We had a great 2007. 'Road Rage' was one of Sirius Radio's top metal requests for four straight months and counting. We toured with (HED)P.E. and DIECAST, picked up new endorsements and sponsors and launched a whole new jazz/lounge alter ego, SLOWER.

"Now we're looking to find two guys with touring and recording experience that are going to appreciate that we're set up with a label, management, and booking agent, and will make the most of the opportunities we have to get music out to people."

Musicians that are interested can contact MOWER at mowerinfo@yahoo.com.

"In the past we've always looked around San Diego to find people to play music, but this time we're looking everywhere," says Sheerin. "Check out the videos and the songs and please contact us if you're interested. Most guys know if they're going to work out before they ever call. If you stand still on stage, show up late and can't afford to buy your own food, liquor, gas etc., this probably isn't for you."

"Professional gear is a must, and we want guys that are just as comfortable playing stuff like FRANK SINATRA or PINK FLOYD as they are MESHUGGAH, DEFTONES or SLAYER. For guys out of state we've been using video before any travel."

MOWER is currently writing material for the group's follow-up to its Suburban Noize-released sophomore effort, "Not For You". The album was produced by INVITRO guitarist Mikey Doling and saw the lead single "Road Rage" lit up request lines at Sirius Satellite Radio's Hard Attack. The song has been one of the most requested tracks for twelve consecutive weeks in a row alongside high-profile groups like DOWN, AS I LAY DYING, MACHINE HEAD, DEVILDRIVER and MEGADETH. The video for "Road Rage" was directed by Dale Resteghini (HATEBREED, SHADOWS FALL).

Velvet Revolver Singer Misses Sundance Concert

VELVET REVOLVER frontman Scott Weiland was a no-show for the band's scheduled performance last night (Sunday, January 20) at the 944 Magazine's party at Tao during the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. According to PageSix.com, "speculation from inside the band's camp said the singer had missed his flight to Sundance for the performance, but that didn't stop his bandmates from literally asking the crowd if they wanted to have a go."

"It's was crazy, they were inviting anyone who wanted to get up sing," an onlooker told PageSix.com.

A short clip of VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES drummer Matt Sorum taking on the vocal duties for VELVET REVOLVER's rendition of the GN'R classic "Patience" during the Tao concert can be viewed below.

Weiland was expected to appear in a Los Angeles courtroom last Thursday (January 17), where his recent DUI case was to be continued. The singer was charged with driving under the influence of drugs after being pulled over by police in late November.

Democide Part Ways With Guitarist

The following message has been posted by Democide on their Myspace account:

"Just to let you all know that we have parted company with our guitarist, Ben. He will be playing a last show with the band on 08/02/08 in Calne. The reason behind his departure is simply because we wanted someone who was more into what we were doing, we didn't want to change our direction we are taking and writing new material was getting difficult to please everyone.

We all would like to wish Ben good luck for any of his future projects.

Moving on to who shall be replacing his place. We have a few options open to us, we shall make an announcement as to who the new appointment shall be after our gig in Calne. Then we shall be recording straight away, releasing an EP and then going on tour with our friends in Traitor Born.

Stay Metal."

Stone Temple Pilots To Reunite?

VELVET REVOLVER frontman Scott Weiland has told MiamiHerald.com that fans should be on the lookout for a reunion of his previous band, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, in the coming months. The singer made the announcement during an appearance this past Saturday (January 19) at an all-star gala event benefiting the AROD Family Foundation. The event took place at the Ritz Carlton hotel in South Beach, Florida. Hosts included Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and his wife Cynthia, who founded the non-profit organization to support programs focused on improving quality of life, education and mental health for families in distress.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS guitarist Dean DeLeo and bassist Robert DeLeo confirmed the band's split in 2003 following the release of the group's greatest-hits package, "Thank You".

"It was time to move on to other things," Dean told Guitar One magazine at the time. "Life and personalities and brotherhood took its course."

"Dean and [drummer] Eric [Kretz] and myself, I think, all feel a sense of sadness, relief, anger, melancholy about it," said Robert. "But to try and go and accomplish something with this band after we've already peaked is a bit cheesy. There's a cheese factor with guys hitting 40 trying to recapture glory.

"There's no way to go but out."

Weiland was expected to appear in a Los Angeles courtroom last Thursday (January 17), where his recent DUI case was to be continued. The singer was charged with driving under the influence of drugs after being pulled over by police in late November.

VELVET REVOLVER will begin a new U.S. tour on January 24 in Chicago, with dates confirmed through February 9.

BFMV Frontman Speaks On Opening For Bigger Bands

Revolver magazine recently conducted an interview with BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE frontman Matt Tuck. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Revolver: Did the success of "The Poison" lead you to feel more confident in the studio this time?

Tuck: The studio is always a relaxed place to us. It's where we're at our most creative and where we shine as songwriters. All the bits and pieces come along on the road, but it's in the studio where all these creative ingredients just pour out of us. We had the luxury this time as well of not having any kind of deadline or anything. We could really take our time and get into it, and if we weren't happy, we'd just start again. That's where Colin [Richardson, producer] came in, because we trust him implicitly.

Revolver: Was working with Colin again a no-brainer?

Tuck: Totally. He just gets what we're doing and what we want to achieve and the way we want to sound. Even when things were bad with my voice and we were in the studio for three weeks without one word being put down on ProTools, there was no negativity. He never got frustrated. He was just like, "No worries — we'll take a break for a few weeks and come back." He pretty much kept it together when times were getting really ugly.

Revolver: A good deal of your touring in support of "The Poison" included dates with older, more established metal bands. Was that exciting?

Tuck: yeah, it means a lot. It's something you never think of when you join a band as a teenager and you look up to these people as complete fucking gods. To even know that they know who we are is fucking amazing. It still hasn't sunk in that we've done something like that. They know us personally and are calling us by our names.

Revolver: How has that changed your ideas about who or what a rock star is?

Tuck: We've kind of seen what to do and what not to do if you get to that level. When we were on tour with GUNS N' ROSES, that was a prime example of how not to fucking act on tour. Then with MAIDEN and METALLICA it was the complete opposite. They made us feel so welcome, and anything we wanted, they were more than happy to give us. It was nice to see that though they've established godlike myths about them, when you actually get them one-on-one in a room, they're just Mr. Average. It was inspiring to see that our heroes weren't dicks.

Revolver: One thing that unites acts like METALLICA and GUNS N' ROSES is that they play to incredibly varied audiences. It's not just kids who know everything there is to know about the history of metal. Does establishing that kind of following appeal to you?

Tuck: That'd be cool, yeah. We've had our fair share of something similar, which is playing in front of people who really don't understand what's going on in modern metal. The MAIDEN experience, for example — there were 40- and 50-year-old men with mullets and denim jackets, you know? It was mad to see how out of touch some people are with modern rock music.

Revolver's entire interview with Matt Tuck can be found in the magazines' March 2008 issue, available on newsstands now.

Sentinel Beast Recording New Album

Reunited '80s Sacramento, California thrash band SENTINEL BEAST has issued the following update:

"SENTINEL BEAST is currently in the studio recording our second album. We hope to have this album finished by April, showcasing our European tour that month."

SENTINEL BEAST was formed in Sacramento in 1984 by Debbie Gunn, Mike Spencer (bass), and Scott Awes (drums). During this time, the axes were played by Greg Williams and Jerry Fraiser, later to be replaced by Barry Fischel and Mark Koyasako. Discovered by Kerry King of SLAYER, the band recorded and released the influential "Depths of Death" album, on Metal Blade Records, in 1986 and the band later went on to open shows for the likes of SLAYER, EXODUS, MEGADETH, MERCYFUL FATE, KING DIAMOND, and others. The band broke up when Mike Spencer joined FLOTSAM AND JETSAM as the replacement for Jason Newsted when the latter left for METALLICA. Debbie Gunn departed for Chicago shortly after to front ZNOWHITE, then relocated to Europe to join the all-female thrash pioneers, ICE AGE.

SENTINEL BEAST has returned with the belting vocals of Debbie Gunn, Kenny Eckhart and Dana Lindstrom on guitars, Nic Atomica X on bass, and the fresh drum attacks of Scott Fuller.

Korn Touring Guitarist Situation Clarified

The management of Shane Gibson, one of the guitar players currently touring with KORN as members of the group's backing band, has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET regarding the erroneous reports that Rob Patterson — former OTEP guitarist who was in the back-up band for KORN's Family Values Tour in 2006 — is replacing KORN guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer on the band's current European trek:

"Rob Patterson is NOT replacing Munky. In fact, Shane Gibson, the backup guitarist of KORN and the lead guitarist for [KORN singer] Jonathan Davis' solo tour, was asked to take over Munky's role as the lead guitarist soon after Munky's departure. Shane saved the day by re-learning new parts of all 22 songs in ONE DAY and was ready to rock out by the next evening. Rob Patterson was brought back to fill in for Shane's backup guitarist's role since Shane is now playing the lead and Rob knows the backup guitar parts by heart by being a backup guitarist in the past. Although Shane and Rob both are playing up front on the stage since two or three shows prior to last night's show (at first, Rob was in the back with Kalen), Shane is playing Munky's guitar parts, the major riffs, heaviest and loudest parts of all songs. Shane is on the right side on the stage from the audience, where Munky usually stands. When Munky is able to come back, it's expected that Rob goes back and Shane returns to his backup guitarist's position."

Shaffer left the tour for "personal and family reasons," according to a statement posted by the band at its official web site. Singer Jonathan Davis said, "We fully support Munky's need to be home right now and because we want to come through for all of our European fans, the tour will go on. It's what Munky wants us to do, too. We promise to give it our all every night!"

In a MySpace bulletin, Munky stated about his decision to leave the tour, "If you want to better understand my departure, then listen to the words in the song 'Watching the Wheels' by John Lennon."

Although his departure is not seen as permanent, Shaffer is the third original member of KORN to exit in the last three years. Guitarist Brian "Head" Welch left in early 2005, while drummer David Silveria went on "temporary hiatus" in late 2006 and has yet to return.

Shaffer posted an update online just a few days ago, saying that he had a "big surprise announcement coming very, very soon" about his future plans.

KORN's current touring lineup includes guitarist Shane Gibson and ex-ARMY OF ANYONE drummer Ray Luzier, in addition to remaining original members Davis and bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu.

Metallica And RATM Rumoured For Reading Festival

According to eFestivals.co.uk, METALLICA and RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE are rumored to be two of the three American headliners slated to perform at this year's Reading and Leeds Festivals, which will happen, as usual, in England over the August Bank holiday weekend — from Friday, August 22 to Sunday, August 24.

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich recently spoke with Revolver magazine about the band's ninth studio album, which is expected out later this year and will be its first all-new effort since 2003's "St. Anger". Ulrich told the magazine that the group's new material "is certainly a lot more dynamic and a lot more varied than the last couple of go-rounds," adding, "There's a lot of light and shade in these songs. There's heavy, fast, nutty stuff, and then there's some slowdowns and musical interludes." Ulrich also said that the album has more in common with some of the group's '80s releases than more recent offerings like "St. Anger" and "Load".

Ulrich wouldn't agree that the yet-to-be-titled disc is a full-blown return to the past, saying, "I hate to be that specific, because six months from now people are gonna go, 'What the fuck? Lars lied to us!' But it feels that way to me."

The drummer also revealed that producer Rick Rubin, working with the band for the first time, wanted METALLICA to use classic efforts like "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" as "reference points" for its new songs.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE — vocalist Zack de la Rocha, guitarist Tom Morello, drummer Brad Wilk and bassist Tim Commerford — released three politically charged albums: 1992's self-titled debut, 1996's "Evil Empire", 1999's "Battle of Los Angeles" and its 2000 covers album "Renegades".

It split in 2000 after the singer decided to record a solo album. The rest of the band formed AUDIOSLAVE with SOUNDGARDEN frontman Chris Cornell. The Harvard-educated Morello also recently released a solo album under the alias THE NIGHTWATCHMAN.

Cataract Introduce New Bassist

Metal Blade Records has issued the following update from CATARACT:

"Allright Cataractians, it's done, we're a five piece again!

As of today Nico Schläpfer from END OF SUFFERING and TIMOR has joined us as our new bass player! We are confident that he will add a lot of new spirit and blood to the band – not just because he's a tiny bit younger than the rest of us, haha!

Of course we want to thank all the guys who also were ready to ruin their lives, we had to pick between four guys and this decision was quite hard to make. We will give you more information about our new member as soon as possible
and we're excited to present him on stage very soon!

Next we'd like to announce our record release and 10th Anniversary show which is scheduled for the 20th of March 2008. It'll take place at Rohstofflager Zürich, we will have a couple of supporting acts and we will take care of a good sound as well. Tickets are available through pitfire.net and directly through us, we'll let you know when.

We've got some other things planned for the release of our fifth full length and we will announce everything in time.

We also have some new merch on the way, we should receive it by the middle of February. We are currently selling out some of our older designs and have lowered the prices, there's just a few (thats one or two) left of those items so check the webstore on our homepage!

We will play an exclusive "show" on the 29th of January appearing at Karaoke From Hell (hosted by Martin Ain from CELTIC FROST) at the Mascotte club in Zürich. It's not really a show since we're only allowed to play one cover song and that's it, but it sure as hell will be a lot of fun! About seven other bands will also appear making complete twats out of themselves to win a trophy!”

Whitesnake To Release New Album In April

To celebrate their 30th Anniversary, WHITESNAKE will release Good To Be Bad, through SPV / Steamhammer end of April in Europe and USA - their first studio album in a decade. The album features 11 new, slamming Whitesnake songs which are guaranteed to take their place alongside their multi-million selling catalogue.

Legendary front man, David Coverdale, says, “The new album contains all the elements I enjoy about Whitesnake, and more. I can hear moments that take me back to the bluesy, early years of the band all the way through the band's musical history to fully embrace the more electric aspects of where we are now, as a band. I'm thrilled with it and can hardly wait to unleash it on an unsuspecting public! If this is indeed the last Whitesnake studio record then I'm happy to finish like this. It was a labour of love making this record...a joy... and I'm still enjoying listening to it. Can't be bad!"

The 11 new songs, written by Coverdale & guitarist Doug Aldrich (who also co-produced the album with Coverdale & Michael McIntyre) provide a good balance of 8 rocking tracks and 3 ballads. Coverdale feels it's the first 'real' Whitesnake album in almost 20 years, commenting “It's very butch. Very muscular..."

Tracks: 'Call On Me', 'Can You Hear The Wind Blow', 'Best Years', 'All I Want All I Need', 'Good To Be Bad', 'All For Love', 'Summer Rain', 'Lay Down Your Love', 'A Fool In Love', 'Got What You Need', 'Til The End Of Time'.

With their blend of hard rock, soul, blues, and balladry plus a healthy dose of priapic posturing and good time fun, Whitesnake brings a welcome, positive energy to the current musical climate.

Additionally, Whitesnake will be taking to the road with Def Leppard, playing a series of co-headline shows across the UK, major festivals and headliner shows in summer of 2008. The internationally renowned, multi-platinum band will be featuring songs from David Coverdale’s colourful career including the hits (for the choir to join in with) and new material from ‘Good To Be Bad’.

This is an opportunity to experience the ultimate line-up and celebrate 30 years of Whitesnake, who are:- Doug Aldrich on guitar; Reb Beach on guitar; Timothy Drury on keyboards; Uriah Duffy on bass; Chris Frazier on drums and of course, the inimitable David Coverdale on vocals.

“I can’t wait to get back on stage – after being in the studio for most of 2007 I am most definitely ready to let off some steam. The front row should definitely be prepared!” says Coverdale

From 1973 to 1976 Coverdale was the vocalist with Deep Purple, one of the biggest bands in the world. In late 1977, a year after leaving, he formed Whitesnake as a blues-based, melodic rock band to tour and promote his solo records ‘Whitesnake’ and ‘Northwinds’.

The band then took on a life and an identity of its own, attracting not only the supporters from Deep Purple, but a whole new audience hungry for the blues, soul and good time rock Whitesnake offered.

In the early 90’s Coverdale spent 3 years working with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, on the rock classic ‘Coverdale Page’ album, before retiring from the music business for several years.
