Bullet For My Valentine Frontman Speaks On Opening For Bigger Bands

Revolver magazine recently conducted an interview with BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE frontman Matt Tuck. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Revolver: Did the success of "The Poison" lead you to feel more confident in the studio this time?

Tuck: The studio is always a relaxed place to us. It's where we're at our most creative and where we shine as songwriters. All the bits and pieces come along on the road, but it's in the studio where all these creative ingredients just pour out of us. We had the luxury this time as well of not having any kind of deadline or anything. We could really take our time and get into it, and if we weren't happy, we'd just start again. That's where Colin [Richardson, producer] came in, because we trust him implicitly.

Revolver: Was working with Colin again a no-brainer?

Tuck: Totally. He just gets what we're doing and what we want to achieve and the way we want to sound. Even when things were bad with my voice and we were in the studio for three weeks without one word being put down on ProTools, there was no negativity. He never got frustrated. He was just like, "No worries — we'll take a break for a few weeks and come back." He pretty much kept it together when times were getting really ugly.

Revolver: A good deal of your touring in support of "The Poison" included dates with older, more established metal bands. Was that exciting?

Tuck: yeah, it means a lot. It's something you never think of when you join a band as a teenager and you look up to these people as complete fucking gods. To even know that they know who we are is fucking amazing. It still hasn't sunk in that we've done something like that. They know us personally and are calling us by our names.

Revolver: How has that changed your ideas about who or what a rock star is?

Tuck: We've kind of seen what to do and what not to do if you get to that level. When we were on tour with GUNS N' ROSES, that was a prime example of how not to fucking act on tour. Then with MAIDEN and METALLICA it was the complete opposite. They made us feel so welcome, and anything we wanted, they were more than happy to give us. It was nice to see that though they've established godlike myths about them, when you actually get them one-on-one in a room, they're just Mr. Average. It was inspiring to see that our heroes weren't dicks.

Revolver: One thing that unites acts like METALLICA and GUNS N' ROSES is that they play to incredibly varied audiences. It's not just kids who know everything there is to know about the history of metal. Does establishing that kind of following appeal to you?

Tuck: That'd be cool, yeah. We've had our fair share of something similar, which is playing in front of people who really don't understand what's going on in modern metal. The MAIDEN experience, for example — there were 40- and 50-year-old men with mullets and denim jackets, you know? It was mad to see how out of touch some people are with modern rock music.

Revolver's entire interview with Matt Tuck can be found in the magazines' March 2008 issue, available on newsstands now.

REAL Metal Bands are not rich or mainstreem.... Real Metal bands make the music for themselves, Not for mass media and the tight pant wearing sceamo fags in High school....TRUE Metal is, Leviathan, Gorgoroth, Xasthur, Avulsed, Nattefrost and Carpathian Forest.....The only Metal band forgivable for gong mainstreem is SLAYER........So how many of you hardcore, Nu metal, Emo-Sceamo Fags are TRUE metal?

Emo, rap, pop, country (with the exception of Johny Cash and Stevie Ray Vaughn if you consider SRV country), and love metal, all irritate me to no end and make me angry. Most likely due to the lack of intelligence and herd conformity mentality that those types of music are laced and saturated with.

Metal is not about being dark or evil. Being metal has no coorelation to popularity. True metal doesnt limit itself to mindless topics like rape, murder, sex, or drugs. And most of all metal is not a f***ing fashion, you dont have to have the right hairsytle or wear all black. Metal is a lifestyle, its about doing what makes you happy, not caring what others think about your lifestyle, and creating heavy music that is true to yourself. And if you wanna talk about band names, Gorgoroth was stolen straight out of the f***ing lord of the rings, very original. And I guess sabbath, priest and maiden are all not metal for having music videos, right........

Sabbath, Priest and Maiden are some of the fathers of Metal, they made music videos before it became a mtv trend for all the emo mall goths that buy one of their albums and claim to be a diehard Metal head....They can do that.. but Lamb of god and all those bands just make the music for the sole purpose of selling albums and they go straight for the videos to become more popular and make more money....just because Gorgoroth took the name from the lord of the rings means its not original? lamb of god took their name from the bible...Gahhl is more Metal than any band on this site, same for Wrest, and Malific.....and fashion, hair style and attitude IS just as important as the music itself...you have to look the part.....but I guess all you nu metal hardcore a$$holes are just forgetting all that. you look like dumbf***s and your music isnt even good....Black Metal seems to be the only pure form of Metal music that still exists. They do it for themselves, not the mainstreem...you can hear thier heart and soul dripping from the music...THAT is Metal

When I first bought Leviathan's album, The tenth subleval of Suicide, I was really dissapointed. But after I listened to it a few more times it became one of my favorite albums. The production is terrible and the riffs are usually extremly simple. But it sucks you in and you can actually feel their pain. No other music has ever done that for me. Bands these days are all about the money and fame, Black Metal shuns that....Its like a painter that paints for the sheer enjoyment of it. Its all about what they feel, and they do an amazing job of making the listener feel the same......Its easy to write a hit song that sells to thousands of mall goths and emos...It is less so, to harvest your own suffering and put it into something that is both beautifull and ugly at the same time, and to do it for yourself and yourself alone....whether other people like it or not.....THAT is impresive.....Look up "f***ing your ghost in chains of ice" for example.......

Originally Black Metal was a backlash to the entire death metal band as all the death metal bands began to sound the same and that gets boring. Black Metal started playing simplistic riffs against the more techinically orientated death metal and went for a low fi production as opposed to the more top knotch production of death metal. I'm not sure of why they started to wear corpsepaint but I'm guessing because Death Metal use to claim that image isn't important at all and doing the opposite of Death Metal they started putting on black and white face paint. The original guys were about originality and when you listen to the first 5 or 6 BM bands (Immortal, Darkthrone, Burzum, Emperor, Enslaved, Mayhem) you can actually hear actual differences between those bands. Ironically, however, Black metal has become like Death Metal before it as a production bands with no originality in their music whatsoever: same sacrelig lyrics, same simplistic riffs, same low fi production, same corpse paint; basically Black Metal became just as trendy as Death Metal. As much as I love the original Black Metal bands as well as some of the others who bring something new to it or put their own spin on it (ie Xasthur, Dimmu Borgir, newer Emperor etc.) I get just sick of that sea of copycats just as much as the sea of copycats in death metal.

Black metal is also about preservation of heritage. Which is where corpse paint comes from. Scandinavian Warriors used to wear war paint to try to intimidate their enemies in battle. Image in the metal world is on all sides. As Curor said both dm and bm are "trendy." I myself do dress in black. Long black hair, make up (though my everyday make up has calmed and the full on make up is for special occations like concerts), black clothes, spikes and you get the idea. I dont do it to be a "true metaler" I do it because other clothing makes me uncomfortable and like to be comfy. I am also a "what you see is what you get" kind of a woman and happy with that no matter what the consiquences are or who likes or hates it.

Around the time I started developing a taste in hardcore punk I realized that isn't who I am and I began asking myself the question of why I care what they think, I still dress a little stereotypical (all my shirts are black with some grey thrown in and I wear combat boots and dark *not black however* jeans) but that is because that is what I think is comfortable, except in the summer when it gets f***in hotter than hell lol.

That may be true but in my post I meant that it's not just women who dress like teases who get raped as its other women in general.

Oh. Gottca! Agreed. I also think that the alcohol laws in America should be relaxed a bit. I think a millitary i.d card should let you drink even before you are 21. I really think if you have balls enough to serve my country you deserve a god damn drink!

^Since I don't drink I don't really care if the drinking age is 18 or 21 although 21 is alittle harsh. I def. agree that the military guys deserve it regardless of age.
