Interview
Interview with Perra Karlsson of In Aeternum
Sweden's black metal masters IN AETERNUM, after being on Poland's Agonia Records label are now residing with Singapore's PULVERISED RECORDS, the home of great acts such as Dissection, Watain and Sathanas. The highly anticipated first release for them will be the brand new Mini-CD "Curse of Devastation" that's been produced at the Abyss Studios with engineer Tommy Tägtgren. This MCD will be available probably during late January/early February 2007. I fully believe this is one of the more important underground metal acts around, mainly due to the fact that they keep it honest and true in concern to black metal's original meaning, while not getting bogged down too much in that over the top snynth'd-out production that you get now from Cradle of Filth and so many other in this sub-genre. I am beyond honored to have landed this Q&A in with one of heavy music's more remarkable drummers, Perra Karlsson. More...
Megadeth Set Release Date For United Abominations
Singer/Guitarist Dave Mustaine has posted the following message in the "Forums" section of the band's official web site:
"So, yes the May 8th date (Saturday May 5th in Australia) is finally confirmed [for the new MEGADETH album, 'United Abominations'] now that the mix is nearly done. I hate saying when release dates are, because sometimes they change, and you have to deal with naysayers who behave like the ultimate inch of colon, but I would rather this record was finished to my standards, and above (which it is . . . about time, I know) than put out a soft record.
"Metal needs a really good old-school record again. I believe I have delivered. It ain't 'Rust in Peace 2', but it could be the record that makes me forget about everything in between."
Marilyn Manson: Dita Deserves Nothing
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Marilyn Manson has asked the courts to block any future claim by Dita Von Teese for spousal support. Marilyn also wants her to pay for her own lawyers. You can check out the documents here.
Jimmy Kimmel joked about news Marilyn Manson ended his marriage to Dita Von Teese and apparently has already rebounded with 19-year-old Evan Rachel Wood during his 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' monologue the other night. You can watch the clip at abc.go.com.

Unearth "Stoked" To Join Slayer On Tour
LiveDaily.com reports: For Unearth, vocalist Trevor Phipps, it'll be an honor to take to the road with speed-metal godfathers Slayer later this month.
"I don't know of any metal heads that do not like Slayer," Phipps explained during a recent e-mail interview. "My first real concert was seeing 'Clash of the Titans' with Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth when I was 12 years old. Hell, the band I was in in high school even covered 'Dead Skin Mask.'
"Needless to say, we are all stoked as all hell to be part of this tour. We have hung out with [Slayer guitarist] Kerry King a bunch of times and he is a cool cat. We are all looking forward to getting to know the other dudes as well."
Unearth, which also includes guitarists Ken Susi and Biz McGrath, bassist John Maggare and drummer Mike Justin, will spend Jan. 24 through Feb. 28 opening for Slayer throughout the United States in support of its album "III In the Eyes of Fire." The record was produced by Terry Date, best known for his work with Metallica.
"[Date] had a lot of great ideas for capturing the live energy we were going for on the new disc," Phipps said. "He is a master at recording bands. The biggest reason we chose him was because of his past work from Pantera and the Deftones to Dredge. This guy knows his aggressive music, so it was a perfect fit for us."
In terms of Unearth's catalogue, "III" fits right in, according to Phipps. It subtly traces Unearth's musical history while bringing in new sounds.
"It has elements of every recording we have, but at the same time is a natural progression of who and what we are as a band. It is necessary for a band to grow as musicians and as songwriters and we all believe that this record is our best material to date."
Those sounds are created by Susi and McGrath, who then bring their riffs to practice so Justin can throw down beats. Each member gives their input as to how the songs should be arranged.
"Once the song is relatively close to being done, I get a vibe from the tune and then put the lyrics down," Phipps explained.

Poison The Well, This is Hell, The End To Tour
Poison The Well has announced a string of headlining dates to prepare for the release of their new full-length Versions. Joining them on this run is Long Island, NY's This Is Hell and experimental noise-core unit, The End. This is Poison The Well's first tour since last summer's STRHESS TOUR with Shadows Fall and first since recording their upcoming album for Ferret Music, Versions to be released this April. Speaking on the forthcoming trek drummer, Chris Hornbrook says "We're excited to hit the road and get a chance to shake our rust off and debut our new material to fans. We chose the opening bands based on their diversity of sound with ours and think kids will get a full package to enjoy." Joining members Hornbrook, Ryan Primack (guitar) and Jeffrey Moreira (vocals) will be their touring line-up of Mike MacIvor (formerly of Candiria) and Brad Clifford (of Since By Man).
Versions is the band's first release since 2003's You Come Before You on Atlantic Records, which sold over 130,000 copies in the U.S. Heading from their tropical home in Ft Lauderdale/Miami FL to Umea Sweden, the band recorded with the production team of Pelle Henricsson and Eskil Lovstro who recorded You Come Before You as well as classic albums by The Refused, Breach and others. Primack describes it as having many more colors and nuances than previous work. "The songs are pretty open ended and there's a lot of unique instrumentation in the background throughout such as Mandolins, slide guitar, horns and banjo." Primack who plays all of the unexpected instruments on the disc adds "this is not out of the blue, we actually started to add these elements to the last album but we didn't have time to flesh them out like with Versions. It's going to be a really different sounding album in hardcore, well as different as you can be in hardcore nowadays."
Carpathian Sign With Resist Records
Following the success of an independently released self titled e.p. in 2005, CARPATHIAN have decided to follow in the footsteps of hardcore heavyweights Parkway Drive, I Killed The Prom Queen and Irrelevant, amongst many others, releasing their debut album with independent label Resist Records. Recorded at Soundhouse Studios in Adelaide, "Nothing to Lose" finds the band defining their previous sound while incorporating brand new non-genre specific influences. This release sees the band embrace multiple musical elements to present 30 minutes of relentless and punishing breakdowns, inspiring sing-alongs and lyrics that speak to a scene who are quickly growing tired of metaphors and insincerity. "Nothing to Lose" proves to provide an accurate soundtrack to the energy and buzzes of Australian hardcore in 2006 and shows us CARPATHIAN are ready to put their own stamp on the world of heavy music.
Carpathian will be touring Europe with Parkway Drive and On Broken Wings in March. The Warriors were scheduled to be part of this tour, but dropped off to concentrate on their Victory Records' debut. Here are the tour dates: More...

Obscura Part Ways With Guitarist
Guitarist Markus Lempsch has left German death metal band OBSCURA. Lempsch has issued the following statement on the matter:
"Due to scheduling conflicts and other obligations I decided to take a break from OBSCURA. It was a hard decision, but I am not able to dedicate the time and energy that's needed right now. The other guys just started searching for a replacement and those guitarists who're interested in playing technical death metal should feel free to contact steffen@obscura-metal.com. What OBSCURA is asking for is skills, professional attitude, experience, creativity, quality equipment, the ability to play shows and tours and dedication to the band's aims. Thanx to all those who supported us so far and helped to make our European tour with SUFFOCATION a success."
Released last year, OBSCURA's debut album, "Retribution", was produced by Alex Krull (ATROCITY, LEAVES' EYES) and includes guest appearances by V. Santura (DARK FORTRESS), Matthias Röderer (ATROCITY), Thorsten Bauer (ATROCITY) and Martl (PROFANITY). The cover artwork was created by Timo Wuerz.

Apothys Holding Auditions for New Drummer
Apothys have posted the following statement regarding on their Myspace page:
"Through an unfortunate turn of events recently, Apothys is faced with the task of replacing their drummer. Auditions will start very soon.
Apothys is an established, original metal band out of the Woodbridge, Virginia area, and they have been generating a lot of buzz in the Northern, Virginia/Washington, DC area. They released a demo this past year that has garnered some great reviews, and is being played on several underground stations across the country, and a few overseas.
In the past year they have written more than enough material for a first album.
They are now faced with finding a new drummer, due to some unforeseen circumstances. If you are interested and feel up to the task, send a message from this site or the Apothys site. If you are not familiar with Apothys, check out the Cold Shot Productions site or the Apothys site to hear some of their music, to see if you can play their music, and to determine if it is the type of music you want to play and be part of."

Scum of the Earth Post New Demo Samples Online
SCUM OF THE EARTH, the band featuring former ROB ZOMBIE guitarist Riggs, has posted four new demo samples without vocals on its official MySpace page.
SCUM OF THE EARTH recently tapped renowned U.K. concept artist Paul Garner to create the cover art for the band's upcoming second release, tentatively entitled "Sleaze Freak". Paul's probably best known for his work on everything from tattoo and t-shirt design to movie/music magazine illustration to giant murals and sideshow banners, and co-designing, producing and directing the Gawkagogo Bizarre Cabaret and Theatre shows throughout London and the U.K. He's also worked with Richard O' Brien ("Rocky Horror Picture Show") and Clive Barker. Paul's style peers behind the curtain of a sinister sideshow underworld where cartoon geeks, zombie kids, and unspeakable things from the slab mingle menacingly with the ones that the Scooby Doo gang let get away. Saxon Post New Single Available For Paid Download
SAXON's new single, "If I Was You", is now available for download from a number of online shops. A complete list of participating shops can be found on the band's official web site.
SAXON has finalized the track listing for its new album, "The Inner Sanctum", due in Europe on March 5 (Germany: March 2, U.S.: April 3) via SPV Records.
Commented frontman Biff Byford: "'The Inner Sanctum' is a typical SAXON recording that kicks off with gargatum heavy metal tracks, followed by classic rock 'n' roll numbers, returning to metal towards at the end. I'd say the album is in the style of 'Lionheart' and 'Metalhead'; a number of tracks have a 'Solid Ball of Rock' touch, but at the same time the production [by Charlie Bauerfeind] is very modern."
Evergrey Cancel Romanian Concert Date
EVERGREY vocalist Tom S. Englund has released the following statement regarding a cancellation of tonight's (Sunday, January 21) EVERGREY show (flyer) in Bucharest, Romania:
"We are extremely sorry about the cancellation of tonight's show in Bucharest. We were looking forward to coming and playing for our Romanian fans for the first time. But unfortunately the trailer to our tour bus broke down and we have been stuck in Turkey for 24 hours. We were hoping to get it fixed in time, but when the repairmen finally fixed the problem, there was simply not enough time for us to make it to Bucharest and play the show. Please accept our apologies for this and please understand that this lies totally out of our control and the Romanian promoter is also not to be blamed. We will do this show at some point later in the spring. Sorry again and stay grey." More...

Rare Video Footage of Deathrash Unearthed
Bassist/founding member Pat Burns of the reunited New Jersey thrashers DEATHRASH has issued the following update:
"We got word last weekend that a video from our Sept. 27, 1986 show at The Grunge Club has surfaced! This is excellent news as we have been looking for a copy since we got back together. We are going to have it transferred to DVD and post some songs on our website and MySpace page.
"The Grunge Club was a warehouse in Middletown, NY where our old friend Mark Johnson used to put on shows. We played there a few times and it always RAGED! The shows really captured the DIY spirit of the times — no stage, no light show, no bullshit. Just original bands giving it all they've got for a couple of hundred crazed thrashers!
"Tracks from our Grunge Club shows will be on the 'Thrash beyond Death' CD. We'll keep you informed as things develop with the CD and video postings! More...

In other news, http://www.black-sabbath.com/ has posted the following updates:
"OK, I got done listening to the Geezer Butler and Ronnie James Dio interviews with Eddie Trunk. I wasn't planning on staying up, as I was pretty tired, but I got into it. Was nice chatting with some of y'all over on Eddie's site during the show. Wanted to post a few updates based on what was said. Here's some tidbits. These were all said by either Geezer, Ronnie, or Eddie on the show.
As I covered earlier in the evening, the first US gig for the Heaven and Hell tour will be March 30th at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. There will be no opening act for this show, it's just Heaven and Hell. Tickets are expected to be priced between $54.00 - $74.00 and go on sale Friday, January 26th at 10am.
There will be other US dates, likely in August. No further info is available on them yet.
After the US dates, they will likely play UK, Japan, & Australia.
Both Geezer & Ronnie said that it is pretty likely there will be no Ozzy era tracks played during the Heaven and Hell shows.
Tour rehearsals start roughly two weeks from now.
Black Sabbath: The Dio years will be released Apr 3rd.
All three newly recorded tracks will be on the "Black Sabbath: The Dio Years" album. It was previously reported that only two would be, but all three will be there.
There are no keyboards on the newly recorded tracks.
Keyboards on the tour will be handled by Scott Warren from Dio's band.
Geezer did not write any of this new stuff, nor did Bill or Vinny - these tracks were written by Tony & Ronnie. Side note: A recent Rudy Sarzo interview said that two of the three new SABBATH tracks were originally ideas Ronnie had put forth for the next DIO album, but got used here instead.
Ronnie feels that this was never intended to be a full fledged reunion when it started, just the couple of tracks for the compilation. He did say that the opportunity to dust off the old Dio era tracks was too great to pass up. Finally, he said that history has shown they can't plan too far ahead for this, and that they do not intend at this point to carry on past the tour.
Part of the reason they called this Heaven and Hell and not Black Sabbath was that they all felt that Sabbath was "back together" for awhile now with Ozzy, and that since they went into the hall of fame with that lineup, that that's the way "Black Sabbath" will remain. I've said that for a few years now that we'd likely never see another lineup change in Sabbath, and it looks like that's coming to pass.
Ronnie feels that this tour/new material is an affirmation of the legacy Dio era of Sabbath. I agree with him. It's great to see this again. I saw these guys in 1992 on the Dehumanizer tour. Be great to see it again.
A personal observation. "The Dio Years" is coming out on Rhino. Rhino has also put out some more recent Sabbath things, like the two CD Symptom of the Universe set and Black Box. These items were released in North America ONLY. I will attempt to find out if this will be the case for Dio Years too, or if it will be a more worldwide release. Given the nature of the tour, I would think so, but I cannot find that out either way at this point.
Ronnie also said that after the Heaven and Hell thing is finished, he will be going back into the studio with Dio to record Magica II & III and then tour "with a stage show worthy of the story". This will be great, as I was really into Dio's stage shows back for Last in Line & Sacred Heart. Great stuff. Be nice if he does that, but I saw Dio on the Magica tour, and he played to at most 1500 people in Dallas. It'd be awfully expensive to lug around a stage show like Sacred Heart to only play to that many. We'll see."
Ted Nugent's Inaugural Act Offends
Famed rocker Ted Nugent recently helped reinstated Gov. Rick Perry celebrate the kick-off of his second full term in office. However, Nugent's performance left some of the black-tie events attendees with a bitter taste in mouth and mind. With machine guns as props, Nugent stepped up as final act to the Inaugural Ball stage wearing a cut-off Tshirt advocating the Confederate flag and yelling abuses at non-english speaking peoples.
The embarrassment has been down-played by Robert Black, Perry's spokesman, who said "Ted Nugent is a good friend of the governor's. He asked him if he would play at the inaugural. He didn't put any stipulation of what he would play", whilst GOP strategist Royal Masset stated "I think it was a horrible choice, I hope nobody approved it."
Civil rights leaders also made their criticisms known, with Gary Bledsoe, president of the Texas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People advising "Whenever someone sports the Confederate battle flag, many Texans will be offended, and rightly so, because of what it symbolizes — the enslavement of African-Americans and more recently the symbol of hate groups and terrorists".
Ted, who openly supports hunting and gun-rights, was unable to be reached for comment on Thursday, according to a spokesperson. He was hunting.

Ash Reunite and Post New Song Online
The black metal band, Ash, have reformed and posted a new song entitled "Bleeding Horror" on their Myspace page in addition with the following update:
"As it stands now there are only two things that can be said about the future of Ash. One is that new demo material has already begun to take form and as always the material is in good hands. Borg has laid the foundation for more Ash material to come and it will not disappoint a single fucking one of you I am sure. Secondly, the two of us have long been discussing getting things rolling once more and properly this time around. It looks as though we may be able to make that happen sometime this year. We want to thank all of you for the constant support and belief in this band, you're the main reason we're even able to consider coming back. This time we want more, a lot more, and we hope that you will stick around for Act II...it will be a killer.

Retaliation Announce New Album
Henke of Swedish death metal band, Retaliation has posted the following update:
"That's the shit my friends; the title for our new album:
'The Cost Of Redemption.'
Yeah...we like it!
Although, don't get too optimistic...we haven't even begun to record.
Supposedly we'll lay down the drum track on the 27th and 28th of January. But knowing my own band members I wouldn't be surprised if something fucks it all up once again (like sooo many times in the past).
Our goal is to have the album released some time before MDF07, so that people at the show hopefully recognize some of the songs we'll be playing. Of course we'll mix it up with a few old ones as well...
The loyal friends at No Tolerance are releasing the new album (just as they did with our last offering, 'Violence Spreads Its Drape') and we trust them with all our hearts that they wont screw it up so that the album is released too late." More...
