Interview

Interview with Matt 'The Lord' Zane of Society 1

Los Angeles, California's SOCIETY 1 band is one that needs no introduction at this point. An industrial metal unit for the ages fronted "Mr. Hooks in His Back", Matt 'The Lord' Zane, a true talent that has pretty much seen and done it all in the heavy music world to this point and he's still not anywhere near thirty years old. Let's be more to the point that people either love this band and Zane or they positively despise them. They have undergone a label change and a lineup facelift in over the past year and I can guarantee that those people that hate this band are really going to be pissed at the fact that Zane, unlike many rockers of his stature, has not decided to slow up on his continued assualt versus the mainstream way of thinking in the music business. The band is currently at work on putting out a brand new album and so I ventured into his dark realm recently to get some Q&A in and think you'll all enjoy the brief trip into The Lord's world. Schizo Sign To Scarlet Records

Long-running Italian metallers SCHIZO have inked a deal with Scarlet Records. The group's new album, "Cicatriz Black", is scheduled for release in March. Production duties were handled by SCHIZO themselves, while the mastering was taken care of by Peter In De Betou (MARDUK, MESHUGGAH). Cover artwork was created by Italian artist Lorenzo Mariani (MAYHEM, DARKTHRONE, MARDUK, 1349, ABORYM). Guest appearances on the CD include Steve Sylvester (DEATH SS), AC Wild (BULLDOZER) and Flegias (NECRODEATH).

Commented SCHIZO mastermind Alberto Penzin: "Thrash metal is attitude, not just a pose. And we incarnate thrash's most extreme and psychotic spirit. With guitarist S.B. Reder back in action 15 years after, the magic is still there. SCHIZO are back. And this time they're here to stay. But don't expect the usual copy/paste from the old years… We're able to look at the future with a different mentality, keeping in mind that sonic violence is still SCHIZO's real trademark. This album is for those who never stopped to believe. Ourselves first. Psycho thrash is back!"

"We have made a decision to return to the U.S. for a few additional shows," notes guitarist Samoth. "This time Chicago is also put on the map.

Trivium Tagged As Revivalists and Plagiarists

LESSON ONE for all aspiring bands out there: if you think you’re good, make sure you tell as many people as possible. Just ask Florida metallers Trivium.

When the quartet signed with Roadrunner in 2004, they supported the release of their second album Ascendancy with interviews in which they confidently voiced their desire to be one of the biggest bands in the world. Think Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer, they suggested, and one day you will also think Trivium.

Not surprisingly, the notoriously suspicious metal world reared back, took one look at the young upstarts - frontman Matt Heafy was all of 19 when he made the claim - and laughed. Until, that is, they heard Ascendancy and its classic thrash metal stylings, the likes of which turned them into genuine stars in the UK, where they recently performed in front of 80,000 people at the Download festival and supported Iron Maiden.

“All the other bands that were around and that were getting pretty stale were pretty shocked [by what we said],” Heafy says triumphantly. “But now they see we’re still around and hammering away, and all the disbelievers, they’re not really saying anything any more. We haven’t really seen anything negative since [just-released third album] The Crusade came out.”

Heafy’s first taste of metal came in 1998 when a friend gave the-then impressionable 12-year-old a copy of Metallica’s Black album. Amazed at its technicality, aggression and catchiness, he delved into the band’s back catalogue, devouring both it and any albums released by the band’s late-80s/early-90s thrash peers. Not surprisingly, when he started playing guitar and formed Trivium, what came out was a noise that owed a debt more to the bands of yesteryear than it did Korn, Deftones and Limp Bizkit.

Man Killed Outside Hardcore Show In New Jersey

A man was killed following a fight outside Club Deep on Sunday evening in Asbury Park, NJ. The victim was 25 year-old James Morrison, an Iraq veteran. Morrison was reportedly at the club to attend a show featuring Ramallah, COA, and Wisdom In Chains. The altercation apparently began inside the club then continued outside on the street, where police found Morrison on the ground at around 6 pm. After being taken to the hospital, Morrison was pronounced dead at roughly 6:30 pm. Asbury Park Press has an article on the incident here.

For their part, Ramallah has issued the following statement:

"None of Ramallah was involved, nor did we see anything that happened. We also did not know the kid that was killed. We have been blamed, lumped in with whoever was involved, and received tons of negative emails about what happened. None of this is our fault, we were supposed to play a show and didn't. Most of the people voicing their opinions were also not at the show and know even less about what happened than we do."

Angel Corpse Give Studio Update

Bassist/vocalist Pete Helmkamp from US black metallers ANGEL CORPSE has issued the following update:

"Everything is going great for the Of Lucifer And Lightning recording. John Longstreth has created some hammering drums for us to work with, and Gene (Palubicki) and I are hard at work tracking guitars, bass and vocals for the album. We promise that Of Lucifer And Lightning will be the most extreme Angel Corpse album to date. Of course this sounds cliche and what every band might say after 're-forming' after several years, but we say fuck off to all of that: Angel Corpse has never been like those other bands and this album will certainly show that to be true. Beware: Antichrist Vanguards advance!"
