Man Killed Outside Hardcore Show In New Jersey

A man was killed following a fight outside Club Deep on Sunday evening in Asbury Park, NJ. The victim was 25 year-old James Morrison, an Iraq veteran. Morrison was reportedly at the club to attend a show featuring Ramallah, COA, and Wisdom In Chains. The altercation apparently began inside the club then continued outside on the street, where police found Morrison on the ground at around 6 pm. After being taken to the hospital, Morrison was pronounced dead at roughly 6:30 pm. Asbury Park Press has an article on the incident here.

For their part, Ramallah has issued the following statement:

"None of Ramallah was involved, nor did we see anything that happened. We also did not know the kid that was killed. We have been blamed, lumped in with whoever was involved, and received tons of negative emails about what happened. None of this is our fault, we were supposed to play a show and didn't. Most of the people voicing their opinions were also not at the show and know even less about what happened than we do."

Kind of pathetic that the band feel they have to say "not our fault" rather than "this was a tragedy and we're very sorry it happened despite the fact we were completely unaware of it transpiring"....

Whoever speaks on behalf of the band should find a new job or shut up. That guy was at the prime of his life...he survived a twisted f***ing war to die at a show....s'f***ed....and all the band can say is "it wasn't me"....

ramallah has to say that "it wasnt our fault" because they still have that stupid group of f***ing tough guys that call themselves FSU following them around. every show they have to fight someone. and its not just a one on one fight, its 20 on one, b/c ive seen it happen plenty of times. if anyone in that "gang" was involved than ramallah should take some responsibility for what happened. regardless this is saddening that this guy survived a war and was killed trying to enjoy himself at a concert. as for dmasa in post 1, your comment is insane. ive been to plenty of metal shows where people have gotten the living snot beaten out of them. typically you find your drunk maniac a$$holes at metal shows, and your tough guy straightedge idiots at hardcore shows. either way, if your there to enjoy the show, you lose when you run into someone like that. again, this news sucks. this should not happen at concerts, but it does and everytime i hear about it it gets more and more dissappointing.

this is because of the blatant disregaqrd for anyone else in the club/gig. I've had "dealings" with this kind of person before, and that time it ended with my holding a broken bottle to the throat of the blokewho knocked my girlfriend out cold with an elbow. i wouldnt have done this but he didnt care or apologise even when my mates and i confronted him about it.
The fact that they are even let into clubs and gigs is pretty bad.
The fact that the band decided to pass the blame before blame was cast is disgusting...

and Jackrum, next time you have an encounter with a b*tch like that and have a broken bottle or knife in hand, never, i mean NEVER hold it at their throat. its bad fighting tactics because that position is easily deflected and the other person can get around to you. have your arm c***ed back beside you with your other arm in front. so when you want to stab, you just thrust it forward and only guys with martial arts skills know how to deal with that.

There are d***s and bullies at metal shows too.

I've won and lost my share of confrontations at shows of all stripes, weirdly...radio festivals are the worst. Guys are gang groping girls, some of them clearly underage. People punch strangers (0 pit etiquette) because a crowd surfer kicked their jaw and they thought it was the guy next to them...

Equally funny and sad stuff. Some people are hauled off on gurnies unconscious and minus teeth....Thats the risk and so it goes.

Back to the point, I think more hardcore kids than metal kids go to the show with a the mentallity of: "I've been waiting 2 weeks for this, time to hospitalize someone"...I've worked with people with this ethic....I'm profiling a bit but it is from experience.

There are a handful of bands with hardcore leanings that I like but a few nasty fans have a way of spoiling a good show for everyone.

But my fellow headbangers, lets not go off on the hardcore scene. keep in mind the infuences of bands like D.R.I, C.O.C, Discharge and Black Flag on the metal scene. Plus Hardcore and Metal fans co-created the
extreame gene know as Grindcore for worldwide moshing ear killing chaos.
While my moshing history is very very minmal, (ie, one circle pit at a Dragonforce show)thiers gotta be a prick in about every pit, so dont blame every hardcore bands or thier fans less they(hardcore kids) make sterotypes about us.
But I must agree, all of the ninjakicking dose not belong in a pit.

Ya know, I fully agree that this was very uncalled for and nobody should be killed at a show. But let me do say, that a lot of metal band talk all this sh** about demons and killing and "church burnings" and fighting and all that sh**, but when something like this actually does happen, you all turn around and complain and say sh** like "this is f***ed up, why can't we just have fun at concerts", I have stood in line for so many shows, and listened to "metal heads" talk about how they are gonna "f*** everybody up, and do all this crazy sh**", but when something happens you metal heads or whatever you call yourselves complain. Now again, I do think that someone should not be killed let alone necessarily fight at shows, but yet again I don't talk about how I'm gonna "f*** everybody up", and "mosh so hard", and get outrageously drunk and try and fight everyone.

Just to relate to another topic of this, you kids hate sh** like fights at shows and and sometimes sh** like this happening, but some of you support that gay band Gorgoroth and their support in "church burnings"? what the f***? I'm not religious at all, I don't believe in any god or anything, but none of it makes any sense, you support the arson of buildings which could harm people for their beliefs, but when it comes to fighting at shows you flip out like its the worst thing in the world?
Now let me say one more time so none of you freak out about it, I 100% agree that it is wrong to fight somebody at a show, let alone kill somebody, but I'm just saying the irony of what metal kids say in certain situations, and then what they believe because what another metal band says or does, meaning following what Gorgoroth supports.

Weather it is a culture or not, think about it. Lets remove the whole "church burning" discussion, lets use the natural metal violence in lyrics, the whole I'll kill you/ hurt you, kill your soul blahblahblah all the metaphors and all that sh** about killing people, but when something like this actually happens, "metal" kids flip out about it.

Possibly because as you said they are metaphors? Metal bands have long used fantasy, nihilistic metaphors, a focus on mortality etc as lyrics but that doesn't mean they personally believe in violence. Mastodon sing about mythical beasts, but does that mean they believe them to exist? No, so when Exodus sings "Kick in your face, and rape and murder your wife" it's is obviously tongue in cheek and not representing a belief in rape. So lyrics really are irrelevant. A few black metal bands may have called for church burnings as per their beliefs but I don't think they have ever called for violence against Christians. And even if they had, this hardly represents the greater metal culture.

I just believe in singing about what you believe and what you think, and backing up what you say, not writing and singing lyrics about sh**, then only going, "well its a metaphor, its not what I really mean" type of bullsh**...

As far as Punk/Hardcore, I don't like it mixing with metal but my mates are quite into it, I go to heaps of local shows which always have a cool, non-violent crowd.

Well again, they mean it in the sense that it's metaphorical, oir at least in any way that's not literal. Plus I very rarely care about lyrics, the music is what matters to me.

"basically doing whatever to make tons of money" - Haha, most extreme bands barely make enough to keep playing music. Alot of gore bands will write about violent scenarios (not violent ideologies or support) because of morbid fascination, tradition in the metal culture, a metaphor, to highlight mortality etc - BUT nowhere does this imply that they encourage violence or hatred. Quite the oppisite in fact, the vocalist from Cannibal Corpse gave a great interview in the movie A Headbangers Journey to that effect.

LET'S SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT......HARDCORE IS A FASTER VERSION OF PUNK ROCK....LISTEN TO ALL THE EARLY NYHC BANDS....RAMALLAH IS A METAL BAND, OR A "METAL-CORE" BAND.....ANY TIME YOU PUT SOME OTHER WORDS IN FRONT OF THE WORD "CORE" IE...METALCORE, RAPCORE, DEATHCORE....IT'S ALL CRAP AND IT STINKS!.....HARDCORE IS BAD BRAINS, HARDCORE IS WARZONE, HARDCORE IS AGNOSTIC FRONT, HARDCORE IS MINOR THREAT......RAMALLAH???? THAT AIN'T HARDCORE.......DON'T DRAG HARDCORES NAME THRU THE MUD CAUSE SOME METAL BAND DECIDES TO CALL THEMSELVES HARDCORE.....
IT'S THESE METALCORE DOUCHEBAGS WHO DANCE LIKE NINJAS....REAL HARDCORE SHOWS HAVE CIRCLE PITS, STAGE DIVES, AND A FEW PILE ONS.....FUN STUFF.....
AND FROM WHAT I'VE HEARD THIS DEATH WAS A RESULT OF A FIGHT THAT HAPPENED AT THE BAR AREA IN BETWEEN BAND SETS....NOT ON THE DANCEFLOOR....SO IT REALLY HAD LITTLE TO DO WITH THE WAY KIDS DANCE

REAL HARDCORE STILL LIVES IN NYC!

I fully agree with you that Bad Brains is hardcore, and ramallah isn't. But you do also have to understand, there is nothing wrong with listening to Bad Brains and Minor Threat, but stop living in the past, seriously, everybody says how hardcore is dieing and how nobody supports scenes anymore, well thats because everybody expects every band to sound like those older bands, or otherwise "it's not good" or "thats not hardcore". Hardcore evolves and changes, yea there is a lot of sh**ty bands out there that call themselves hardcore, but there are also a lot of newer hardcore bands that I think are awesome. I happen to like Ramallah a lot, weather they are considered to be a hardcore band or not.
Like I said, there is nothing wrong with listening to old school hardcore and all that, but to me, if someone listens to nothing but old hardcore, its no different than someone still listening to 80's metal and saying how everything now sucks, its rediculous, the past is the past, and don't get me wrong I LOVE MINOR THREAT and BAD BRAINS, and Cro-Mags and all that sh**, but that sh** is not around all that much anymore, so if your gonna call yourself a "hardcore kid" and support "hardcore" then support whats going on around you, there are a lot of good newer hardcore bands out, I do have to say its hard to find them within all these sh**ty bands out, but if you look there are A LOT of good bands out there.
I just can't stand living in the past, it sucks to say, but its over, lets just do what we should be doing and what we believe or at least I believe as I guess you would say "a hardcore kid", and thats supporting your scene, doing what you love, having fun, and me personally, hating metalcore, however I do like ramallah even though you might consider them metalcore.

makesnosense....i agree with you 98 percent.....i was making a point by bringing up bands like bad brains....i love alot of the new bands..but i respect the older bands sense of comradary and family.....i'm in my 30's but i still attend 6 to 8 shows a month at a MINIMUM.......alls i'm saying is that hardcore is what it always has been to me......new bands can come along and if they play hardcore, then i consider them a hardcore band......if they play something that ain't hardcore.....it doesn't mean they ain't a good band or i won't like them......it just means they ain't a hardcore band.....so these people on this board shouldn't be talking smack about hardcore when NO HARDCORE BANDS had anything to do with this.......

This is a metal site and so generally I sweep everything with a notable hardcore influence into the word hardcore, as do alot of other people here.

werd I gotcha . The thing that gets me more than anything, is how these metal kids talk sh** on hardcore and they don't even know what hardcore really is. They see some metalcore/emo kid with hair in his face wailing his f***ing arms and calling himself hardcore, and they consider that hardcore. I'm not gonna even sit here and explain what hardcore really is and what it's about, cause people that makes those assumptions know nothing about music anyways. Think about it, most metal kids say they hate hardcore, but love bands like Slayer, Anthrax, S.O.D., all that sh**, they all have hardcore backgrounds in the sense of all the members of those bands listen to hardcore, love hardcore, well the old stuff haha, and it just proves that over 50% of "metal kids" have no f***ing clue what they are talking about. I mean look at the guitars Jeff Hanneman(Slayer) plays, it has stickers all over it with punk rock bands and hardcore bands and sh**. I'm sorry to say, but most metal kids are f***ing gay, and they are the ones who need to stop worrying about their f***ing images, and worry about the f***ing music for once. Hardcore isn't "flailing your arms", if a metal kid said that sh** at a real hardcore show, that we be confronted very f***ing fast, now again I think fighting/killing at a show is obviously wrong, but sometimes you have to defend what you believe and what you stand by( in a fighting sense only, haha obviously never kill somebody for any reason), which to me is hardcore, well there is a lot more to it, but whatever, I'm getting off track here and sh**, I just hate the "metal" mentality, 98% of them are f***heads who have no clue what they are talking about other than going "yea man lets get f***ing drunk", and gay a$$ metal-horns, seriously f***ing gay and stupid.

by the way when I said "all that sh**" after naming Slayer, Anthrax, and S.O.D., I didn't mean they were sh**, cause those bands rule haha.

i love how you guys are posted bad sh** on FSU and Ramallah

Seems like you all dont understand what FSU is about. FSU is not a gang, its a group of friends.
Stop talkin on smack, Dudes in FSU have done more for music than you metalheads have done in your entire life.

You all need to go back to playing dungeons and dragons while listening to some lame swedish metal band who'se name you cannot pronounce, while drinking pabst.

Again, this is a metal site, so don't expect experts on hardcore. You claim we don't know what real hardcore is, but the fact is we don't care what it is. So what if Blag Flag, Minor Threat had an influence on metal. A caveman with a stick, Bach, Elvis - they all in some way influenced harcore but I don't see you praising them.

makesnosense your going back to the same point again which is bullsh**. "these metal kids talk sh** on hardcore and they don't even know what hardcore really is" - you say this but do you know what real metal is?...

"98% of them are f***heads who have no clue what they are talking about other than going "yea man lets get f***ing drunk", and gay a$$ metal-horns, seriously f***ing gay and stupid."

...Because it's obvious you don't know anything about the metal scene, otherwise you would know 98% of metalheads aren't stupid kids.

xbobbyedgex, hey I'm not talking sh** on FSU or anybody. I love ramallah. and I don't know any FSU dudes, but I've seen them at shows, and they seem cool to me, they seem like nice dudes, I've never said anything about them, who said something about them? I didn't even think any FSU dudes had a part of this, I have no clue of what even happened. I'm just defending hardcore for what these metal kids are saying about it and making fun of it.

Cynic, I know a lot about the "metal" scene, I used to listen to nothing but metal, and go to metal shows. I do know what real metal is, and my point exactly on when you said they don't know what hardcore is, but yet they still talk sh** on hardcore, they don't know what it is, so they shouldn't talk sh** on hardcore.
