Unearth "Stoked" To Join Slayer On Tour

LiveDaily.com reports: For Unearth, vocalist Trevor Phipps, it'll be an honor to take to the road with speed-metal godfathers Slayer later this month.
"I don't know of any metal heads that do not like Slayer," Phipps explained during a recent e-mail interview. "My first real concert was seeing 'Clash of the Titans' with Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth when I was 12 years old. Hell, the band I was in in high school even covered 'Dead Skin Mask.'
"Needless to say, we are all stoked as all hell to be part of this tour. We have hung out with [Slayer guitarist] Kerry King a bunch of times and he is a cool cat. We are all looking forward to getting to know the other dudes as well."
Unearth, which also includes guitarists Ken Susi and Biz McGrath, bassist John Maggare and drummer Mike Justin, will spend Jan. 24 through Feb. 28 opening for Slayer throughout the United States in support of its album "III In the Eyes of Fire." The record was produced by Terry Date, best known for his work with Metallica.
"[Date] had a lot of great ideas for capturing the live energy we were going for on the new disc," Phipps said. "He is a master at recording bands. The biggest reason we chose him was because of his past work from Pantera and the Deftones to Dredge. This guy knows his aggressive music, so it was a perfect fit for us."
In terms of Unearth's catalogue, "III" fits right in, according to Phipps. It subtly traces Unearth's musical history while bringing in new sounds.
"It has elements of every recording we have, but at the same time is a natural progression of who and what we are as a band. It is necessary for a band to grow as musicians and as songwriters and we all believe that this record is our best material to date."
Those sounds are created by Susi and McGrath, who then bring their riffs to practice so Justin can throw down beats. Each member gives their input as to how the songs should be arranged.
"Once the song is relatively close to being done, I get a vibe from the tune and then put the lyrics down," Phipps explained.

This should be a good show I really think its gonna be great. I mean I'm not the biggest fan of unearth but my buddy saw them at ozzfest and said they were pretty good. Also I think thine eyes bleed is gonna be doing the canadian dates along with slayer and unearth which should be even better I saw them at the unholy alliance and was impressed. And of course you got slayer, I mean you look at Tom you can know he getting older be he still looks pretty damn good and I think he sounds pretty damn good.

isn't unearth a christian band? i wonder how much they will like it when slayer has upside down crosses and pentagrams everywhere for their stage show? haha maybe they'll try to force christianity on the fans by putting up crosses and pictures of jesus for their stage show? might just happen!

"Swedecore became unexpectedly popular around the year 2000, along with emo, probably due to its overlap with some of the heavier post-hardcore bands. Among the bands that helped popularize it and are considered its foremost representatives today are Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, and Unearth. Because of its popularity, it is often criticized as a 'sell-out' genre, being called "the new nu-metal". The validity of this argument is supported by the fact that Ozzfest lineups in recent years have begun to consist mainly of metalcore bands, whereas the festival had been dominated by nu-metal in the late nineties. Defenders of the genre say that the style has simply become more popular, while critics counter that the music itself has become watered-down and stale." - Wikipedia
They're trendy metalcore to me.

Swedecore is the lamest-assed name I've heard yet. Gothencore is almost as bad. The bottom line is that these bands play a type of melodic metalcore. And that melodic dimension alone gives it wider appeal than the various other kinds of metalcore that feature more screaming and/or discordant/noisey sounds or a straight up punishing sound. Calling these bands sellouts is akin to calling Iron Maiden sellouts because death metal is so much less popular.

first of all i have no itdea why a metalcore band is playing with salyer.. yes i agree that they have musical tallent but they take the concept of balck and death metal and place it in the hands of a sissy. balck and death metal are less popular now but for those who undersand it its a beautiful creation.. now you have metalcore, and most people dont appreciate a well placed note or a sick riff they just want to hardcore pu$$y dance and honlestly this is a rip-off of the death and balck metal music. I honestly thing that type of music is creative but they are breeding a new generation of f*gs.... you cant compare Slayer to uneard just like you cant compare Fall out girl to Opeth or cannibal courps. I have nothing against those guys but from what i know about slayer is thst the opening acts get harrased.. so lets see how this goes.

I agree Swedecore's a lame name (I swear I've never heard it use anywhere but wikipedia...maybe a popular use in some country?) but it's pretty bang on as far as formula (Being a big At The Gates fan I cringe every time I hear their riffs blatently copied). Being a sell-out funny enough isn't purely about selling records it's about mainstreaming your music or following a mainstream trend.

I just got back from the Slayer show and I have to say that Unearth sucked ballz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought they might be ok live, but it was worse than listening to their album. The guitar players looked like they were fallout boy rejects, and not one song was any different from the next and ZERO LEADS. Big surprise there! The vocals were all the same and sound like a billion other metalcore acts. They had some idiot run out on stage and give the guitar players a beer bong quick, and then they all looked around like we were supposed think they were cool for it. They are nothing but a NU METAL band with growling vocals, and a drummer who plays double bass. Slayer owned as usual and I'm disappointed they tour with such sh**ty bands like unearth, and hatebreed. They need to take out some good bands or go alone.
