Divinity Destroyed's Ex-Drummer Speaks
Divinity Destroyed's former drummer Dan Leonard discusses his reasons for leaving the band:
"I had an opportunity of a life time that I had to act on. Everyone I know, including the band, said I would be stupid if I didn't act on it. Originally, I didn't think I'd be able to play shows till probably after May. Right now, I told the band that I can still play Fridays locally and wherever on Saturdays since I got the hang of things. In future, after May, I don't know what my schedule will be. Thats really all I can say about it. It's been difficult to practice music lately with my schedule but thats always something that can improve as long as everyone knows what the objective is and remain on the same page."
"I didn't want to give everything up that we worked on for 8 years. Majority rules in a band situation and if they want to continue looking for a replacement then thats what they will do. If people want to say I couldn't tough it out or that I quit, that's fine. They really don't know me or my situation. I'm not going to give a synopsis of what it's like in the band or what goes on but it wasn't easy to even consider branching out in my life goals. Then again, the band is not in the same standing that it was in the early years." More...

Canadian Students Get To See Ozzy Concert Set Up
According to London, Ontario's Western News, students from the Don Wright Faculty of Music will join others from Fanshawe College and the Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology to experience what it takes to set up for a major touring show.
About 100 students will be at London’s John Labatt Centre Saturday morning to watch the installation, from load-in to sound-check, of OZZY OSBOURNE’s show.
“It will give them a window on what it takes to pull off a large professional stage performance,” said Mike Godwin, technical officer at the Faculty of Music.
“Any big touring group has to adapt their sound system to the space – and do it quickly. It is educational for students, especially if they’ve never been exposed to this before.”
The load-in consists of taking performing equipment, from microphones to pyrotechnics, from eight transport trucks and setting up in the JLC. The students will watch as the crew adjusts to the size of the stage, the acoustics of the space and conducts a sound check with the band. They will also be given a tour of the facility.
The Western students, enrolled in Theory and Composition and Music Administrative Studies, plan a career in music with technology. They are part of the newly formed student division of the London chapter of the Audio Engineering Society (AES).
“It’s a great opportunity for them to network with the people in the industry,” said Godwin. “Their meetings will include tours, masterclasses and speakers. For example, they might hear a lecture by electrical engineers discussing microphone design, to delivering a performance online.”
The AES is a non-profit, world-wide organization that connects audio professionals and students, establishes industry standards and stages conventions and conferences. There are 13,500 members, 81 professional sections and 93 students in 48 geographic regions, including China.
The Don Wright Faculty of Music is one of Canada’s top music schools with faculty and alumni who are world-renowned performers, composers, theorists, musicologists and educators.
Controversy Arises Over Hellhammer Artwork
Century Media Records reports:
With the release of Demon Entrails on February 26th in the US the days of numerous sub-standard bootlegs of the classic HELLHAMMER demos Death Fiend, Triumph Of Death and Satanic Rites are finally over!
However, the new versions did not come without it's fair share of controversy as Tom Gabriel Fischer states: “25 years after the recording sessions for Hellhammer’s legendary demos, Hellhammer is still as controversial as ever. The print shop supplying our German vinyl manufacturer refused to print the gatefold sleeve, as well as the inner sleeves of the triple vinyl of the Demon Entrails release, due to the satanic content. The print shop in question is the only one in Germany able to print the special kind of gatefold sleeve required by the format used for Demon Entrails. As a result of this unexpected circumstance, the gatefold sleeve and inner sleeves are now printed in the UK."
Demon Entrails has been specially re-mastered from copies of the original master tapes under the supervision of Fischer, and the demos now represent Hellhammer exactly as the band sounded when recording these songs in June and December of 1983. Drawing from a wealth of previously unknown historical liner-notes material and artwork as well as plenty of unreleased Hellhammer photos from 1982 to 1984, Demon Entrails features all lyrics and essays detailing the individual demo recording sessions.
Demon Entrails will also be available as an opulent oversized double CD media-book packaging and as a gatefold triple vinyl album. Both versions will feature a lavish booklet and a poster. These versions will not be available in stores and the only place to order them would be directly through www.cmdistro.com
The bare-bones lower-price CD version will be the only version made available to retail stores. To check out the artwork and some rare Hellhammer photos as well as discover more info on this release, visit the following official Hellhammer website at www.hellhammer.org or go to www.myspace.com/hellhammerband for further details.

Phil Anselmo Speaks On Guitar Part Contributions
Rick Florino of ARTISTdirect recently conducted an interview with Philip Anselmo (ARSON ANTHEM, DOWN, PANTERA, SUPERJOINT RITUAL). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
ARTISTdirect: ARSON ANTHEM is extremely brutal, raw and honest. The songs bear an intensity missing from modern hardcore and punk. What's the creative process like for this band? How do you compose these songs?
Anselmo: I'd mail cassette tapes of riffs I'd come up with to III [Hank Williams III] and Collin, and just give Mike a copy as well. A month or two went by and III drove his truck down to my place with his recording equipment and drums all packed-up in his truck. We wrote the majority of the songs (musically) during that first night. Everybody already knew all the parts from those tapes! The next day, we wrote the rest of the songs, and fucked with some different ideas. The next day we recorded. Mike sang the next night. III stuck around for the following day in order for he and I to mix a little. Then he split. All in all, "physically," it took three days to put together and record.
ARTISTdirect: The album feels unbridled and really free. Was this an especially fun record to make?
Anselmo: Yes. It was a very intense atmosphere, but extremely at ease as well. We knew that we expected the music to capture a specific sound, but until that happened, and it did, it was gratifying. We knew then, that the music that was being written was both flexible and tangible, and that's all we could hope for. We were going to be critical of ourselves, especially Mike and I. We were the oldest, and had followed the hardcore scene almost from its inception and watched it grow and die. Aside from a handful of current hardcore bands, we felt the need to express our interpretation of this type of music, because, to us, it's a sorely missing element within today's generic crop of two-chord bands that basically mimic the image of THE EXPLOITED, but fail completely to impress "true" purists with their music.
ARTISTdirect: Growing up in New Orleans, was there a strong hardcore scene when you were a kid? Or did you find more inspiration from the other East Coast scenes?
Anselmo: Both. In the early '80s, the N.O. underground scene was an incredible thing. There were numerous bands that played every week and weekend. It was a phenomenon that was slowly growing across the U.S. — especially when I moved to Texas, and the scene there was thriving as well. But to be completely honest, the N.O. scene was much more interesting and influential. The bands from N.O. were admittedly influenced by the East Coast sound. Out of all the bands from or around the NYC area that I could namedrop as probably the biggest influence to the N.O. sound would be CARNIVORE. If you take a peek into Pete Steele's resume, you'll find that within the NYC hardcore scene his name is legendary. He's penned many a great song for many a great band. SHEER TERROR was great too. They were like CARNIVORE meets THE RIGHTEOUS PIGS, who were an insanely great band from Las Vegas.
ARTISTdirect: The guitar playing has an almost black metal speed, and it's super-tight. Do you enjoy the chance to focus on playing rather than singing?
Anselmo: I love to play guitar. I've been writing my own songs on the axe since I was nine-years-old. I suck at leads. But I have my own style, although I haven't gotten any better at them for over two decades. My playing style on AA must be tight a la AGNOSTIC FRONT, and loose when necessary. On fast songs like "Hammer Them Out", I down-pick. Which is the correct way to play it. The lead guitar work is a bit repetitious, but when a song is under two minutes long, I don't have much room anyway. Thank goodness. But I've always contributed guitar parts to every band I've ever been in, so I'll always play the axe. Singing and playing have always gone hand-in-hand with me. I love 'em both equally.

ARSON ANTHEM will release its self-titled debut EP on February 19 via Housecore Records; a label created by Anselmo focusing on Phil's side projects and other artists he believes in. The track listing for the effort is as follows:
01. Year Of The Fork
02. Doomed Morale
03. Bunker Life
04. Hammer Them Out
05. Wrecked Like Clockwork
06. Cops Shoot Coke
07. The Avoider
08. Sri Lankan Medication
Serj Tankian Reveals New Single
The Pulse of Radio reports: SYSTEM OF A DOWN vocalist Serj Tankian has issued "Sky is Over" as the second single from his debut solo album, "Elect the Dead". Although Tankian doesn't say straight out what the song is about, he did tell The Pulse of Radio that it comes from both his childhood memories and his concerns about the planet. "I've always thought of the sky as, like, an open canvas," he said. "When I was a kid and I looked at the sky, I always remember being able to daydream, just looking at the sky, being creative, being able to design things. What would happen if we had no sky? Where would we be? Well, obviously, scientifically, without an atmosphere, we'd all be dead."
Tankian recently shot and premiered a video for "Sky is Over".
"Elect the Dead" made the "long list" of finalists for this year's Shortlist Prize, which is awarded to an album that has sold less than 500,000 copies. The winner will be announced in the spring.
"Elect the Dead" came out in late October and landed at Number Four on the Billboard album chart.
Tankian will join FOO FIGHTERS on a portion of their upcoming North American tour, beginning on February 18 in Worcester, Massachusetts and ending on March 6 in Los Angeles.
The singer will also perform several headlining dates before joining up with the FOO FIGHTERS tour. Newly confirmed shows are:
Epica Cancel More Shows
Dutch symphonic metallers EPICA — whose lead singer, Simone Simons, was recently infected with Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), also known as the hospital bacteria — have issued the following update:
"As much as we hoped to do the upcoming shows, after the shows last weekend Simone's condition just got worse and worse and therefore we have to cancel the shows for the rest of the month. Our sincere apologies for this last-minute cancellation, but as you can understand we don't want to risk anything concerning Simone's health. We will also keep you up to date about rescheduling these gigs as soon as we have more info on this."
Simone Simons recently stated about her condition, "Since a couple of months I have been struggling with infections and had surgery many times. The doctors didn't know what was wrong with me. After a lot of tests at the hospital they found out that I am infected with MRSA, also known as the hospital bacteria. The treatment of this bacteria comes with a strict hygienic schedule which I have to work through every day. Because of this I will not be able to go on long trips, let alone living in a tour bus. . . We cannot plan too far ahead since I first have to get rid of the infection and that will take some time. How long it will take we cannot tell at the moment. We are very sorry that we cannot do these shows. We were all looking forward to this tour and to meet you guys. What I have to focus on now is getting well, so that we will be on the road again as soon as possible."
According to WebMD, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), like all staph bacteria, can be spread from one person to another through casual contact or through contaminated objects. It is commonly spread from the hands of someone who has MRSA. This could be anyone in a health care setting or in the community. MRSA is usually not spread through the air like the common cold or flu virus, unless a person has MRSA pneumonia and is coughing.
Korn Guitarist Leaves European Tour
KORN lead guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer has left the band's current European tour for both personal and family reasons. The group's frontman Jonathan Davis said in a statement, "We fully support Munky's need to be home right now and because we want to come through for all of our European fans, the tour will go on. It's what Munky wants us to do, too. We promise to give it our all every night!"
Shaffer recently posted an update online about his current activities, including his Emotional Syphon Recordings label and KORN's current European tour. But Shaffer also hinted at his own future plans, writing, "Before I hit the road, I wanted to let everyone in on a little secret. I have a big surprise announcement coming very, very soon. It's something I'm extremely passionate about, and I have a feeling everyone is going to love it. Be sure to keep checking this page, because this announcement is going to be big..."
Shaffer did not provide any further details about his "surprise announcement," although there is speculation that he'll record a solo album.
Whatever Shaffer has planned, he'll have some free time to work on it. Although KORN began a European trek on Sunday night (January 13) in Dublin, Ireland, Davis told The Pulse of Radio he doesn't expect the band to schedule any further touring after it's done. "After the world tour, I think we're gonna just take four months off," he said. "We're done and we're gonna do another record, because we've been going solid 14 years and I think me, (bassist) Fieldy and Munky really want to just take that time, get together and regroup, and do an amazing record together."
KORN's current touring lineup includes guitarist Shane Gibson and ex-ARMY OF ANYONE drummer Ray Luzier, in addition to Davis and bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu.

Ignite The Will Breaks Up
Iowa hardcore/metal band Ignite The Will has called it quits. The group released a full-length with Double Or Nothing Records in 2006. The following statement has been issued:
"Anyway, it's true, [we are] going to cease and desist on February 2nd. No, there is not an Ignite The Will from Uganda that plans to sue us if we continue to use their name. And no, Seth has not entered in the pro body building circuit, making shows and touring impossible.
The actual cause of our demise is related to 'life decisions,' or something closely resembling those. Right about now you may ask how guys with 'no life' can make 'life decisions.' Not sure what I am talking about, so...on with it!
The bottom line is that we are all going to do different things and given that there is 1,951.44 miles between Paul and I, it only makes sense to lay this baby to rest in a respectful manor. Does our respectful demise exclude the possibility of touring foreign lands for the next 20 years and selling obscure merch on Ebay? If so, strike that statement.
Ok, seriously now, thank you folks for caring about Ignite the Will. It has really been a pleasure being in this band and a big part of our enjoyment stems from the numerous friendships that we were able to form. Thank you!"

SOAD Guitarist Speaks On Scars On Broadway
SYSTEM OF A DOWN guitarist Daron Malakian has told Revolver magazine that the debut album from his SCARS ON BROADWAY project — which also features SYSTEM drummer John Dolmayan — promises to explore the same thematic and sonic territory as SYSTEM while pushing into new terrain as well.
"The way SYSTEM sounds is my signature," Malakian says proudly, "and I don't want to completely run away from that, because I like it. It's where I'm comfortable. But at the same time, we want this to have its own identity, which I think it will. I'm not writing the same songs now as I did two years ago. And when you listen to 'Mezmerize' and 'Hypnotize', they're different from 'Toxicity'. I can't repeat myself."
SYSTEM OF A DOWN singer Serj Tankian's solo debut, "Elect the Dead", sold 66,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 4 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD was the first new release from a member of SYSTEM OF A DOWN since the band went on hiatus in the fall of 2006.
Although Tankian played most of the instruments on the record himself, SYSTEM OF A DOWN drummer John Dolmayan contributed to a few songs.
Deftones Reveal New Album Title
DEFTONES has set "Eros" as the title of the band's sixth studio album, tentatively due later in the year. Frontman Chino Moreno recently told UK magazine Kerrang! that the songwriting for the CD is coming along much faster than it has in the past. Moreno said, "We've certainly taken our time on the last few records but this one has happened very quickly. We got off tour and took a month off. Then we went into the studio and wrote a lot of music very quickly...The most important thing we had to do was to break our habits and change the way we've done things for the last few years."
Moreno explained that the band took much longer to come up with material in the past because "everyone was working separately. We would record our parts and then email them out without actually seeing each other...This time, we were all together and that really helped."
The band's last CD, "Saturday Night Wrist", came out in October 2006 and its creation nearly resulted in the band's demise. But Moreno said, "Our working relationship is better than it's ever been before. As a result, everything has improved -- our friendships and our lives. We're all really happy now."
As for the direction of the new record, Moreno hinted, "The songs are definitely weird...there's a lot of atmosphere and a lot of soundscaping."
Lordi Reveal More "Dark Floors" Details
More information about LORDI's upcoming horror film, "Dark Floors", can be found on the movie's newly launched official web site at this location.
"Dark Floors" will premiere at Oulu Energia Areena on February 6. The home of Kärpät, a Finnish National Hockey League team, will host an audience of 5,000 people who will also see LORDI's show. With its image as the film-friendly town up north, Oulu is the perfect choice for the premiere: "Dark Floors" was shot there last summer.
The Finnish national premiere for the film is Friday, February 8.
Finland's biggest-ever premiere is a co-operation with the Northern Film and Media Foundation POEM and Oulun Kärpät.
Based on an original idea of LORDI frontman Mr. Lordi and director Pete Riski, "Dark Floors" is a classic horror film expected to make it big internationally. The English-language film was made with UK actors. Members of LORDI star as monsters who chase a group of people in a hospital where everyone has died. LORDI's song "Beast Loose in Paradise" can be during the closing credits.
"Dark Floors" is directed by Pete Riski and produced by Markus Selin. The film is written by Pekka Lehtosaari. It all started in an interview where Mr. Lordi said he would like Selin to contact him to discuss his idea for a film.
Solar Films produced the film in cooperation with the Northern Film and Media Foundation POEM and the North Finland Film Commission (NFFC).

The best way to do that is give them a kick ass rock show!"
Below are confirmed dates for the tour (the tour will continue into April, so there’s more to follow):
