Metallica Drummer Says New Album Is More "Dynamic"

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich recently spoke to Revolver magazine about the band's much-anticipated new album, tentatively due in the spring via Warner Bros. Records.
"This stuff is certainly a lot more dynamic and a lot more varied than the last couple of go-rounds," he said. "There's a lot of light and shade in these songs. There's heavy, fast, nutty stuff, and then there's some slowdowns and musical interludes. It's pretty different from 'St. Anger', and it's pretty different from the 'Load' stuff. This stuff is not the one-dimensional punch in the face that 'St. Anger' was. This is probably a little more like those couple of albums back there in the decade that begins with an '8.'"
When asked if the material represents a return to the "old school," Lars replied, "I hate to be that specific, because six months from now people are gonna go, 'What the fuck? Lars lied to us!' But it feels that way to me. It's been no secret that Rick [Rubin, producer] suggested to us that we use a couple of those records as reference points — that we spend some time kind of accessing that headspace. So when we would come to forks in the road, sometimes the exercise became, 'What would we have done at this point in 1985?'"

Even when I was a Metallica fan I wanted Lars to shut up. I dont hate Metallica because its trendy, I hate the new Metallica because their new stuff sucks! They have the potential for great stuff, but for some reason they are not useing it. SB&M I am sorry to hear your haveing troubles. There is always hope for the best. :)

Okay, first off, I don't hate Metallica because its the "thing" to do now...I hate Metallica, because they were doing very great til about '89 when The Black Album came out, and I wouldn't even have minded it so much if they just did the Black Album and went back to doing Thrash Metal like they were supposed to. But then they did Load and ReLoad, basically Several sh**ty albums in the '90s whose titles escape me, and then St. Anger which was the biggest joke in their career. Then Lars never shuts up, and I wouldn't even mind his talking if he didn't sound like an idiot every time he spoke. Okay he's saying alot about the album alluding to how its gonna sound alot more like the Metallica everyone LIKES to listen to. Okay, we get it, now deliver already and shut the f*** up! First off, it isn't like the band DOESN'T know that everyone (everyone being the more trve Metal populace) hates everything they've ever released circa 1989. They know everything they did in the '90s is trash. They just didn't care. They know that what they're doing up to St. Anger has been utter sh**. They've just been so f***ing lazy about it, yes, basically they know their sh** sucks now, they're just too lazy to care because they know that some dumbass mallcore kids are ultimately gonna buy it if WE (the trve) don't buy it. So now they're saying how Rick Rubin beat them back into their proper shape, when it wasn't like they suddenly were retarded in '89 and are miraculously gonna go back to the way it was in 2008. They just weren't motivated, and got lazy (I kind of blame Cliff Burton's death).
But honestly, at this point, I don't even need to listen to Metallica at this point to get a good Melodic Thrash fix. For those of you who have been disappointed in Metallica since the '90s (including myself), just listen to Testament! Seriously, they're a better Metallica basically anyway...And if you don't know who Testament is, just follow the jewtube link below and see, rather, *hear* my point:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=u9RIk53Atmw
They've been at it since the '80s and never sold out or made a sh**ty album like Metallica/Megadeth did, actually, while Metallica was too busy playing with their heads in their asses in the '90s, Testament was still kicking ass. I have spoken...
(I'm now back to eating solid food again! Sadly I can't eat spicy food...Kalis, I wish you literally could send me a bottle of Jack...)

Well, nicely put SexBloodandMetal. Not a lot of people were happy with Metallica in the 90's, compounded by the Napster incident. If I would make a graph to describe Metallica's music over the past years, it would be going straight up till MOP, no change going to AJFA, a drop going to Black Album, and then a horrid downfall with Load, Reload and St. Anger. Although on a personal note, I do like some bits and pieces of the sh**ty albums, and Garage Inc and S&M were the silver lining (due to the simple fact that it was -at least- a change from Load/Reload style music.).
Bottomline is, at this point in their career, we as fans can only hope for better days ahead.

lol Testament, why are you using them as an example to metallica? none of their albums even come close to metallica's first 4, maybe legacy does. but if you knew Testament, those dudes changed as well! so no different, they just didnt get popular. their later tunes suck a$$ as well lol! just like a lot of thrash bands - if you wanna listen to ones that just stay the same, go and listen to Tankard, they'll cheer u up lol!
37. writes:
well, testament's change wasnt near as durastic as metallica's as metallica jumped the metal ship all together. and testaments first four albums stack up pretty well against metallica's first four if you ask me. the legacy, new world order, practice what you preach, souls in black....pretty damn good albums.

38. writes:
I guess it's just a matter of opinions really.. personally, anything after the legacy, testament didnt hit top form again. although the title tracks of practice and souls of black are good.. they aint that memorable of an album.. place them next to something tasty like master of puppets and Ride the lightning .. theres just no comparing :P
39. writes:
Oh Farthammer, don't even get me STARTED on the Napster incident! I swear its like their mantra is "when in doubt, sell the f*** out"!!!
citrus_tea, you are a c*** (You said to do so...)
ZT, I'm quoting you:
"...then they would be accused of being a one-trick pony."
---I beg to differ. And even if that was the case, at least you guys wouldn't be stuck reading my rants about how they suck now...
Old Skool Thrash, I've heard Tankard...They suck live by the way (probably because they're obviously drunk on stage, which DOESN'T help them). But actually, I make sure when I'm with the guys, that we play "Empty" when we start taking out beers and bottles of Jack...Tankard is awesome though...My kinda band, every song is about drinking, and titles like "Space Beer" and "Die with a Beer in Your hand"...
40. writes:
i agree with zt, things wouldve gotten rele boring after ...And Justice for All, it was all starting to become very generic for them, listen to all their ballads from RTL, MOP, AJFA and they all sound very similar, they all kick a$$ but they rele needed to do something different in the 90s. Besides listen to alot of the thrash metal bands stuff from the 90s, it toned down so much and its bullsh** for metallica to be the scapegoat because they were the first 80s thrash band to branch out into the minstream
41. writes:
old skool-- im not saying that testament's first four blow metallica's out of the water, i'm just saying that they stack up nicely. personally, metallica's first four albums are four of my favorite albums ever by anybody. but testament's aren't far behind. that's all.
now playing: iced earth - stormrider

St. Anger was awesome. I hate you a$$holes that say something bad about it. Because those are the same people who were like: "I want them to be hard and heavy again". Then when they were, those people didn't like it. f***ing idiots. St. Anger is the heaviest, biggest punch in the face of any album they have ever done.
Can't wait for the new album!
50. writes:
rlopes, i hate to tell u this cuz im one of the biggest metallica fans you'll ever know, but st anger is far from their heaviest record ever. it was an experiment that just didnt translate into a good album. they were going through a lot of crap during this time and it shows in the lack of production quality on the album, it has some moments of raw energy but thats it at best. However, im hoping for the best on the next album and that they will be able to deliver "the heaviest, biggest punch in the face of any album they have ever done."

51. writes:
Yeah i get what post 50 means. As much as the last three albums Metallica have made were sh**, ( i acually dont mind the black album because it was what i first heard of metallica which then lead me on to discovering there heaps better older albums like master of puppets), and all Lars really does today is feed the small remainder of fans absolute sh** about how good there new album is going to be and how "where going back to our roots" and all this other crap. I hate to tell you lars but its no good standing there and telling us all these things you think we want to hear when no one can really confidently believe any of this after how sh** st anger was. The man as probably spent more time filling magazines full of empty promises and crap then actually hitting a drum. The one thing that gives me hope is that they have Rubin and not Rock for this. I can only pray that he has kicked there asses into line.
In the end i am willing to wait it out until their new album arives, (we have waited this long so for i might as well keep waiting), but if this new album isnt up to the awesome standard that lars has so well promoted to us, then i will personally go and shoot him in the f***ing head.

brandedcfh420. . .why should they do that?? Because its far overdue. I agree that they have continued to release insignificant tid bits of information. You're right. Im in PR so I can understand what this lame strategy is about (you dont need to be in PR to know that much), and you can see that its working. . .hell there have been 52 posts til now so OBVIOUSLY its working. My point is that this album is long overdue and this process of releasing basically the same info on the album time and time again is getting tiresome. . .they need to give their publics something significant . .why?? Because unlike someone like yourself, there are alot of people who care and are hanging out to hear the album. At the end of the day theyre trying to hype it up by saying as little as possible. . .but the fact that theyve taken so long can have adverse effects too. . so why do you care enough to comment?? It worked on you too. Welcome to the capitalist world my friend.

i was refering to them just giving little snippets to make the metallisheep get all horny and start jerkin off to any metallica news..although im no metallica fan, ill agree its long overdue. however, the older you get, the slower you want to take things..so to metallica i say, POP SOME GERITOL AND GET WITH IT. YOUR METALLISHEEP ARE FLEEING THE PATURES FASTER THAN THAN YOU CAN CORRALL THEM!!!!!

This is directed at all those who can't seem to stop whining about how awful Metallica has become. I feel the need to point out a few things. 1st, Metallica is one of the best rock/metal bands of all time, whether you like the latest albums or you don't, you will be very hard pressed to find another band that has produced as much quality music over that great a span of time (25+ years) and built the fan base that they have. Do I agree that "St. Anger" was their weakest album? Yes. Does it compare to "Puppets" or "Justice"? No but you also have to realize that there are few albums on earth that can compare. "Master of Puppets" is quite possibly the best rock/metal album ever made. To expect them to top that every time is not only unrealistic, its rather foolish. I too look forward to the release of the new album in February but unlike many of the people here, I will still appreciate it for what it is, even if it doesn't surpass the "Master of Puppets" album.

I say you all are just bitter that you were Stanger-pwned. I don't think that album was made to be a serious album, more of just some fun jams. Yall take this sh** way to f*ckin seriously. If you wana b**** and moan about everything then go listen to some Dream Theater you c***smacks. Let a band have fun and play their music, if you don't like it who f***ing cares? You're the hater making a little b**** out of yourself thinking they give a f*** what you think. Money Over b****es

87. writes:
yeah agreed HD89 dream theater are hella good at what they do, not denying that but damn some of the comments on here just make me wana slap some of these ppl haha. Metallica plays what they want to play, jams whats fun like they should but some of these ppl act like they think Metallica owes them something. *shrug*
& To the haters: they're a band, they jam just like me and you, what's so bad about Metallica having their fun (referring mostly to St Anger)? If you don't like something... nobody's forcing you to buy it... sure it may not be what some people wanna hear from them but hell how old are they all now? they prolly get tired of playing the same stuff over and over again it probably all sounds the same to themselves. you call them sellouts for movin around and jammin different things, but that's what's real. When I play music I play for me, not whoever's listening, if you're feelin what i'm playin then great, if not then oh well, doesn't affect me, i'm still gonna play it if I'm feelin it.

To alll Metallica bashers-GO TO HELL and have Lucifer stick a red hot one up your ass,for defiling one of the heaviest bands of all time.Just because they tried something different on each album, you got your panties in a twist.I would rather listen to a band that is prepared to be a lifttle different on each and every album than listen to the same old sh** time and again. If you don'r like the song because a guitar solo is missing or not recorded big deal get a f***ing life.If you don't like it because it is acoustic as opposed to rock hard speed thrash all the time, them maybe you should listen to slayer or Morbid Angel[talk about one dimensional sounds].
