Jonathan Cohen reports for Billboard.com:
Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke have formed a new band, Supernova, and will utilize the CBS reality show "Rock Star" as the vehicle by which to select a lead singer. The show will premiere this summer.
Once a singer has been selected, Supernova will hit the studio with producer Butch Walker (Pink, Avril Lavigne) to record an album that will be released in the fall. A world tour will follow in early 2007.
Guitarist Dave Navarro and actress Brooke Burns will return as the show's hosts. Navarro promises appearances from Slash, Macy Gray, Moby and Rob Zombie during the competition.
Last fall, "Rock Star" debuted as a talent search for a new INXS frontman. With winner J.D. Fortune in tow, the group has revived its career with a new album, "Switch," and an extensive tour.
Psyopus will enter Watchmen Studios in Lockport, NY on June 24th (about six months later than had previously been announced) with Doug White (Herod) to begin recording their next album for Black Market Activities/Metal Blade Records. Titled "Our Puzzling Encouters Considered," the album will feature new drummer Jon Cole and will likely consist of the following twelve tracks:
The Pig Keeper's Daughter
Whore Meet Liar
Happy Valentine's Day
Play Some Skynard
Scissor Fuck Paper Doll
Imogen's Puzzle Pt 2
The group is currently talking to Paul Romano (Mastodon) about artwork for the album. In related news, Psyopus are booking a full U.S. tour from early-August through early-September. If you'd like to book them, send an email to email@example.com.
Norwegian power metallers GAIA EPICUS have gone public with their feud with their former record label, Portugal's Sound Riot Records, over the company's alleged unprofessional and dishonest treatment of their acts. A special section on the GAIA EPICUS web site features first-hand accounts from other band that are/were signed to the company regarding their dealings with Sound Riot and their experiences working with the company. You can check it out at this location.
GAIA EPICUS have set "Victory" as the title of their third album, "Victory", tentatively due later in the year. The band's final release for Sound Riot was "Symphony of Glory", which was recorded and mixed over a five-week period at Top Room Studios (TRISTANIA, VINTERSORG, BORKNAGAR) with producer Børge Finstad. The CD was mastered at Bazement Studios.
Greg Prato of Billboard.com reports: Veteran Canadian rock act Voivod will in June release "Katorz," its first album for The End Records. The set is also the first to be released since co-founding guitarist Denis D'Amour (a.k.a. Piggy) died last August after a battle with colon cancer.
"It came about in unfortunate circumstances, but the result is mind-blowing," drummer Michel "Away" Langevin tells Billboard.com. "Right before his departure, Denis explained to me that he had recorded all the tracks that we had been working on with [bassist] Jason [Newsted] and [vocalist] Snake [Belanger] for the past two years. He had recorded that on his laptop with Pro Tools, and even though he would have preferred to re-do the whole thing in a real studio, there was a chance that we could use the tracks. We built the album based on the guitar tracks, which was difficult, because normally, we go the other way around -- we start with the drums, and then add stuff on top. But it sounds amazing."
"'Katorz' means 14 -- it's the 14th effort of the band," Belanger adds. "The first time Piggy put it together and gave us the demo was on CD, [and he had written] 'Katorz,' which is not the right way to write it. Of course [there is] an emotional side to it, so we took the demo, and the design of it will be his handwriting."
The album was assembled in a much different way than Voivod has worked in the past. "After Ozzfest [in 2003], we set up and jammed a few days in a row, we kept it and Piggy worked on it a little bit," Belanger says. "Everything was there -- it was just a few things to arrange. But it's all from improvisation."
Although the band's touring future is up in the air ("The chances are very slim -- it was very difficult just to do the album," admits Langevin), more releases are planned, including further studio albums taken from guitar parts that D'Amour left behind on his laptop. Thirteen songs should be completed and released later this year, with an additional 25 songs to follow at some point in the future.
Additionally, Voivod plans to issue a follow up last year's archival live DVD, "D-V-O-D 1."
Reactivated Finnish melodic extreme metal band ETERNAL TEARS OF SORROW have uploaded the cover artwork for their fifth album, "Before the Bleeding Sun", due in Finland on April 26 via Spinefarm Records. You can check it out at this location.

Every once in a while Lollapalooza gets a token decent heavy act or two and a good number of rock and alternative rock bands. But this year's heaviest band is none other than Queens of the Stone Age. Pathetic. Other than the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the lineup seems especially lame.
This summer's Lollapalooza (Aug. 4-6 in Chicago's Grant Park) will be headlined by The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kanye West and Wilco, and also features Common, Manu Chao, Queens Of The Stone Age, the Shins, Death Cab For Cutie, Matisyahu, Ween and Jack White's new band, the Raconteurs, Flaming Lips, Ryan Adams, Sonic Youth, Thievery Corporation, Sleater-Kinney, Broken Social Scene, New Pornographers, Secret Machines, Gnarls Barkley, Cursive, Stars, Calexico, Nada Surf, Nickel Creek, Lady Sovereign, Feist, the Frames, Sparta, Jeremy Enigk, Wolfmother and Eels.
Salinas, CA death metal/hardcore outfit Moria are looking for a new lead guitarist. The band is looking for someone with experience, solid equipment, a willingness to practice and tour consistently. Serious candidates can find additional information here.

Detroit hardcore band Let It Die have announced plans to call it quits. Formed in 2003, the group has previously released material with Spook City Records. Prior to disbanding, Let It Die will play the remainder of their booked shows. Here's a statement from the group:
"Its been a blast, but it's time for us to go our seperate ways. Our last show is gonna be on April 27th at the Magic Stick in Detroit with Scars Of Tomorrow, Embrace The End, and Bloody Knuckle Combat... Thanks to everyone who has supported us in anyway during the last 3 or so years."
In May 2006, the Dutch black death metal band Isthar will enter the Excess studio Rotterdam (Sinister, Ordo Draconis) to record their first album. This self-released 9-track will be available through their website isthar.info in the third quarter of 2006.
Isthar was founded in 1996 and has released two demo's, which received positive national and international feedback. Both releases can be downloaded from their website here.
"Urgi-doom" (what ever that is) band Taak have finished their work in the studio and the album has been sent to be pressed. Preorders are now being taken here. All who have made their transactions by April 4, 2006 will take part in a raffle for two tickets to the travelling "Rautakanki – On the Road" festival taking place on April 13, where Taak officially present the album. The CD's price, both during the pre-ordering phase as well as after that is only 8 EUR. All pre-orderers will receive their purchase signed by the band.
Brazilian extreme metallers EMINENCE have parted ways with bassist Jairo Guedz (former SEPULTURA guitarist) due to "personal reasons" and "scheduling conflicts." "Jairo has been a fantastic musician [in] the band for six years," the group write in a statement. "We would like to thank
Jairo Guedz for his contribution and wish him well in his future endeavors."
EMINENCE are tentatively scheduled to record their new album at the Ferretti Studio in their hometown of Belo Horizonte. The follow-up to 2004's "Humanology" will be recorded with engineer Stanley Soares (SEPULTURA's "Dante XXI") and will include such cuts as "Enemy Inside" and "Written in Dust". You can check out a demo version of "Enemy Inside" at this location.
EMINENCE's most recent CD, "Humanology", was released via Switzerland's Timeless Productions. The follow-up to 1999's "Chaotic System" was recorded at Sonic Ranch studios in Tornillo, Texas with veteran producer Neil Kernon (NEVERMORE, CANNIBAL CORPSE) and marks the band's first release with new singer Wallace Parreiras (ex-SOULLESS).
Comeback Kid didn't waste any time finding a replacement for departed vocalist, Scott Wade. Guitarist Andrew Neufeld, who has filled in for Wade before, will now take over lead vocals. Neufeld also sings for Figure Four, so this isn't a huge stretch for him. However, in order for Neufeld to focus entirely on vocals, a replacement guitarist will soon be announced.
Terror have finished recording their new album, "Always The Hard Way." Recorded in Hadley, MA with producer/engineer Zeuss, the effort features guest vocals from Eddie Sutton of Leeway and Aaron of Death Threat and will stores on July 11th via Trustkill Records. Following the band's successful appearance at Los Angeles Murderfest 2.0 in February, Los Angeles' CREMATORIUM is locked in as a support act for Deicide's upcoming West Coast tour in April. With only a limited number of dates across the western United States, the band is privileged to be selected alongside Vital Remains to support the Florida death metal legends.
Having parted ways with guitarist Frank Perez, Crematorium will bring the band's brutal, groove-heavy signature brand of metal (dubbed murdercore) on the road as a four piece. "Since we've been playing as a four piece, we've been a more aggressive unit live with both our stage presence and our sound," vocalist Daniel Dismal says. "We're not planning on replacing Frank anytime soon, unless the right person comes along for the job." Meanwhile, guitarist Mark Uehlein will take up lead guitar duties that once fell on Perez's shoulders.
In addition to the line-up change and dates alongside Deicide, Crematorium will be hard at work throughout 2006, continuing to drum up support for The Process of Endtime, the band's latest record through Prosthetic, out on the road. The band has live dates before and after the Deicide tour, and is also planning a tour through Canada and a Mexican tour in the fall alongside Aborted. While out on the road, Crematorium will continue playing new songs which are tentatively set to appear on the band's follow-up to The Process of Endtime.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD have revealed to Kerrang! magazine that their days of shit-talking about other bands are over. The California-based group, who had a run-in with ATREYU last year, put their new attitude down to being more mature. "We don’t slag off any bands anymore because we’re more mature and we're over it now," confessed frontman M. Shadows. "Some of the things we said looked worse than we meant them," added guitarist Zacky Vengeance. They're also determined not to rise to public fall-outs when other bands bait them. "Ninety percent of the bands who have talked shit about us in magazines have asked to be on tour with us," laughed Shadows. "One band who we talked shit about was told by their record company to talk shit back about us just so they could make a story and get some press out of it. It's all politics and bullshit and we're not going to mention other bands' names anymore because we don't want them to get the free publicity."
AVENGED SEVENFOLD's Warner Bros. debut, "City of Evil", was certified gold in January by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for shipments in excess of 500,000 copies. The group's third album, "City Of Evil" is the follow-up to 2003's "Waking the Fallen", which was issued through Hopeless Records.
John Benson reports for Billboard.com: "Addition by subtraction" is how James "Munky" Shaffer characterizes the sudden departure of former Korn guitarist Brian "Head" Welch for spiritual reasons over a year ago. "It was unfortunate what happened to him but if he didn't leave, I don't think we would have pushed ourselves to come up with the great new sound and give ourselves another 10 years possibly," Shaffer tells Billboard.com.
In addition, Shaffer says he and Davis have already written five new tracks for the band's next album. While he wouldn't divulge song titles, he did say the material is in the vein of "See You on the Other Side" tracks "Love Song" and "Coming Undone." Recording isn't expected to get underway until late 2006 or early 2007.
Shaffer also has a solo instrumental project is on the horizon. "It's strictly for guitar nerds like myself who love to tinker and tweak guitar sounds," Shaffer says, adding that it's full of "trippy noises and ambient stuff. I'm now really just working on the first two tracks and it won't be for another year or a year and a half before I can give it to the people. It's not something I'm going to go tour or anything like that. It's just something that I want to do for myself."
The guitarist says another Korn DVD release is imminent, featuring a concert recorded last November at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. No release date has been confirmed.
"There's some more footage of us doing a very expansive press tour," Shaffer says, "but we're still trying to come up with enough material because we need cool stuff to put in there so people will be drawn in to watch more than five minutes of us picking our noses in Germany."
