According to 7Days.ae, British heavy metal legends SAXON will not be performing at this year's Dubai Desert Rock Festival — set to take place on March 16 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates — because one of their songs from the 1980s includes lyrics about freeing the Holy Land and spilling Muslim blood.
Concert organizers Centre Stage Management (CSM) said yesterday (March 12) that Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) had withdrawn permission for the band to perform on Thursday "without citing a specific reason."
However, CSM said that controversy created by the publication of the song's lyrics in local media had influenced the decision.
"Band members were immediately labelled in most Arabic newspapers as racists, Arab haters, who wanted to put all Muslims to the sword," Joann Shams, business development manager for CSM said.
No one from the DTCM was available for comment yesterday. Last week, a local Arab paper translated and published the lyrics to SAXON's 1984 song "Crusader" and said:
"The question here for the band and the organisers is what will SAXON do in Dubai's land and on Arabian sands? Are they going to make us, the Saracen heathens, taste their music just as if their guitars were swords made of steel."
"SAXON...calls for the mass extermination of Arabs," the article added. CSM said the band’s management was informed last night and that they expressed "shock" over the decision.
In a statement by SAXON's management, the band said, "We are very disappointed that we can’t play to our fans in the Middle East. We are not and never have been a racist band. The lyrics of the song 'Crusader' have been taken totally out of context. Many of the songs we write are based on historical events e.g. 'Dallas 1 PM' (Kennedy's assassination), 'Conquistador' (The Conquest of South America), 'Crusader' (The 12th Century) — the songs are not intended to be taken as any form of propaganda, the song is a snapshot of an event in history, the lyrics are intended to give a flavour of what it must have been like in the army at the time. Saladin, the leader of the Saracens, was also a mighty warrior and his battles would make a good vehicle for a great metal song as well.
"The journalist who wrote about 'Crusader' was obviously trying to cause as much trouble as possible. We don't write lyrics to inside hatred or racism, we have fans all over the world of every colour and religion and music should be used to break down barriers and not to build them."
SAXON had been scheduled to arrive on Thursday morning (March 16) and perform alongside five other bands, including MEGADETH, at Desert Rock. More than 4,000 tickets have been sold so far and organisers expect 8,000 to turn up, according to 7Days.ae.
10 Years recently stopped by AOL studios in New York to talk about how they got started and their new-found success. The guys played an acoustic performance of their #1 alternative radio single, "Wasteland." Then as guest DJs, they served up a rockin' set that included music from Pantera and the Deftones. You can listen to the audio interview and segments here.
Guitarist Martin "Sigtyr" Thim of the Danish death metallers Exmortem has posted the following message on the band's official website:
"It's been a long time since the last update again...and the thing is that there's not a hell lot to tell really. Morten [Siersbaek, drums] is in France at the moment and in the meantime me and Andreas [Schubert, guitar] continue working on new material. We are also working on a four-track rehearsal that should be done in a few weeks, but this will not be made official in any way! Andreas is involved in Lithium that have recorded a MCD and are looking for a label, they should have a site up soon... Simon [Petersen, vocals] has just finished a new album with Horned Almighty that should be out soon. In Illdisposed we are awaiting the release date on the new album, plus the touring schedule that follows...more on this as it [becomes] available!"
Exmortem's latest album, "Nihilistic Contentment", was released in January 2005 via Earache/Wicked World Records. The CD was recorded over a four-week period at Antfarm Studio in Aarhus, Denmark with producer Tue Madsen (The Haunted, Hatesphere, Mnemic).
Massachusetts band, THE ACACIA STRAIN, have unveiled cover artwork for the forthcoming 'The Dead Walk' here. Paul Romano (Mastodon, Through The Eyes of the Dead) handled the album's artwork. The record has been confirmed for a June 2006 release through Prosthetic Records, with producer Adam Dutkiewicz (Killswitch Engage) returning to the fold after also producing 2004's '3750.' The band has already posted demo versions of two songs set to appear on the new album on the band's MySpace page. Meanwhile, The Acacia Strain is still out on the "Undoing Ruin 2006" tour alongside Darkest Hour, Himsa, A Life Once Lost, and Dead to Fall through Mar 30.

UK HARDCORE legends STAMPIN' GROUND, no-frills bastards MURDER ONE and black metallers THE AXIS OF PERDITION will bolster the British contingent ripping up DAMNATION FESTIVAL 2006 this October 15, in Manchester.
They will be joined by three of the UK’s finest rising acts; muscle-bound groove metallers HEAD-ON, extreme metalcore from London in the shape of KINGSIZE BLUES and exciting thrash upstarts EVILE.
"Damnation has the reputation of being THE alternative UK metal festival," says Head-On frontman Mark Logan, "so when we were asked to play it was an absolute no-brainer.
"We are pretty damn stoked about playing and you can be sure we will be bringing the meat, the beer, the suplexes, the beards and the fucking RIFFS. Roll on October!"
The Kingsize Blues boys are full of promise too: "Damnation festival, HELL YEAH! - Thats the shit we're talking about.
"A homegrown festival for pure homegrown talent ... and Kingsize Blues like it homegrown!
"Grab a fuckin beer, roll yourself a joint and get your jubblies out, we're gonna eat the fucking place alive!"
Having persisted for over a decade, Stampin' Ground's aggressive, no-nonsense metal has earned them a loyal following and a reputation for packing one of the most explosive live shows around.
They'll join a Jagermeister sponsored stage already boasting metal warriors BIOMECHANICAL and zombie crew SEND MORE PARAMEDICS; as will Murder One, a dirty, raucous blast of satisfyingly unpleasant noise featuring the vocal talents of Raging Speedhorn’s returning Damnation veteran John Loughlin.
Catering for those with a more extreme palette, The Axis of Perdition are the first band announced for the Terrorizer stage.
The confirmation of the self-proclaimed "British cinematic industrial black metal" horde is a huge coup for the festival and an exciting opportunity for fans and newcomers alike to catch a rare experience.
Last year's sell out Damnation, marked by stunning performances from Raging Speedhorn, Entombed, Sikth and Gorerotted, was a shot in the arm for homegrown metal.
A remarkable top four finish in Terrorizer magazine's worldwide "Biggest Musical Event" poll followed, and in the aftermath Virtual Festivals declared: "The true face of underground UK metal has finally clawed its way onto the festival scene, leaving a wound that no amount of imported US and Euro talent can plaster over."
The second instalment of UK-focussed metal will again take place across two stages in Manchester's Jilly's Rockworld and Music Box.
The main stage will be sponsored by our new partners JAGERMEISTER, surely the most rock n roll drink on the planet; while TERRORIZER magazine will once again support the extreme stage.
Festival spokesman Gavin McInally added: “The bands on board so far are a pick of the best the UK has to offer and we are confident of adding more prestigious names.
“By the time tickets go on sale we expect to have announced an extreme and diverse bill of talent which won’t be matched in the UK scene.”
Tickets for Damnation Festival 2006 are priced £15 and will be on sale in April. For further information about the event, visit damnationfestival.co.uk or e-mail: email@example.com

The band apologizes to anyone who may be disappointed because of Scott's absence, but at the same time promises to deliver an aural assault that no TWELFTH GATE fan has ever seen before.
The songs "Critical Elements" and "Inner Core" from TWELFTH GATE's upcoming "Threshold of Revelation" album (due March 20) have been posted on the band's MySpace page. Also available at both locations are two short clips of "Loyal" and "Come Alive", which will also appear on the new album.
