Hetfield: Playing Sober Is Whole New Experience

METALLICA frontman James Hetfield has told Launch that the band's 2003 tour was their first road trip with a sober lead singer, and consequently, his perspective on the trek is much different now than it was at the time: "Now, it's best tour ever, the most awesome experience on the road, the most happiest I've ever been. In the beginning, it was the most scared. Doing anything again for the first time without the crutches was tough. Really had some good support, some friends that helped me get set up for out there. And I knew what I needed to do to take care of myself, and there were some people who helped me do that, and I'm very grateful to them."

James Hetfield told Launch what it's like to play shows while sober, for a change: "Awesome. I mean, seeing people's faces not blurry... I mean, I had my glasses off, but.... Just seeing their faces, being able to see what we do to them, what they do to us, and man! I know why we're out there."

Hetfield described the difference in playing sober: "Now I can really feel what great energy is created by it, I really understand the whole family feeling around it, how everyone contributes to that. Everyone, the crew, puts into it. They're dedicated. They fly the flag and they're really into what we do. They believe in us. And when I go out there and represent all of those people, it's a great feeling."

METALLICA's next U.S. tour begins on August 16.

New Quietus MP3 Posted Online

A brand new Quietus mp3 has just been released on the official Quietus site, "Destroyer of Worlds," the title track from Quietus' 2002 demo, which has been re-recorded with the new drummer, Iwan Hendrikx. He used this as his audition for the band and refined the tracks for use in the new studio recording. Not only did it sound incredible, but he added his own groove into it and made some changes in a few parts. This really helps out in the songwriting process and smoothes out the edges. Also, Iwan mixed and mastered the song along with fellow Exivious bandmate Tymon Krudenier. The new version of "Destroyer..." is just a taste of what they're doing for the full-length debut CD, "BOW," which is already in the works. Scratch tracks have been recorded and edited, and recording will start shortly.

New Tristania Album In The Works

Tristania has returned from 9 weeks in the TopRoom studio and report great confidence in the new-recorded material. Only minor elements remain before everything is completed. The final title has not yet been decided, but the planned release date is 18th of October. The band is anxious to release this album and show their fans what they have been up to these last few years. They are also looking forward to get back on tour and present the new material live.

Furthermore, Tristania is about to sign with SPV. The band is very happy with the contract, which is being finalized now. They are satisfied with SPV as their future collaborator. Several companies were interested, but SPV made the strongest offer and seemed to be the ones who would best support the band's efforts. SPV is a strong contender that will promote and distribute Tristania worldwide. SPV has previously acted as a distributor for Tristania, which the band regards as an advantage. They are looking forward to the cooperation with SPV in the coming years.

Transmission0 US Release Date Confirmed

Go Kart Records today confirms August 24 as the US release date for the debut album from Netherland-based aggressive metal/hardcore band Transmission0. Simply titled 0 (Zero), it is the band's first introduction to stateside audiences as previously related projects and recordings have been primarily unavailable for most US music listeners.

An impressive recording that is expected to firmly launch the band's US profile, 0 was completely created (recorded/mixed) at the band's own Behind Green Door Studios in Tilburg, The Netherlands with guitarist Mischa van Rodijnen serving as both album producer and mixer. "At first it didn't look as if we would ever really start this band," says bassist Dave van Beek of the album and the band's early formation. "After the break up of our former band (Reveal), Mischa and I decided we wanted to start a dark, heavy and atmospheric band. And it took us three years to get everything to our liking in place."

Originally planning to work with small European indie Garden of Exile Records, Transmission0 switched paths earlier this year when recordings by the band were received by long-respected US label, Go Kart Records. More known for punk rock, in which the label is home to The Meatmen, Buzzcocks, G.B.H., Lunachicks, Ten Foot Pole and the recent re-issue of Pigmy Love Circus (featuring Tool drummer Danny Carey), the two agreed to align together. Three months of work would find 0 completed and ready for the worldwide stage. More...

Entombed's New Album Release Date and Tracklisting

Candlelight Records today confirms August 10 as the long-awaited release date for the new album from Sweden's Entombed. "Inferno w/ Averno" is the eighth studio album from the three-time Scandinavian Grammy Award nominated five-piece.

Recorded at the famed Atlantis Studios in Stockholm (Abba, Lenny Kravitz), "Inferno w/Averno" was produced by Entombed and Per Gunnerfeldt (best known for his work with The Hives, (Int) Noise Conspiracy). The album finds Entombed in unmistakable raw form and features some of their best material to date. All Music Guide says, “Entombed proves that its latest musical incarnation is no less dangerous than any of its previous work; a monolithic, guitar-heavy set with lyrics that shake you to your very soul.” Kerrang adds, "Entombed remind us all exactly how amazing extreme metal can be."

The "Inferno w/Averno" US release is an impressive 2 CD package that features a wealth of extra material and enhancements not available on the European export. With fall US touring plans already in the works, it is going to be a widely exposed album and year-long priority.

Dating to 1987, Entombed were one of the first to champion the early sounds of European death metal; a title they still retain today. The band, however, with record sales worldwide in excess of 500,000 units have never been one to rest on their pedigree or highly regarded credentials. "Inferno w/Averno," with an album line-up featuring vocalist LG Petrov, guitarists Alex Hellid and Uffe Cederland, bassist Jorgen Sandstrom (now departed) and drummer Peter Stjarnvind, finds the band delivering an album that is both classic and contemporary and one that crosses standard extreme/aggressive boundaries. The Black Maria Sign to Victory Records

Victory Records has announced the signing of Toronto ’s The Black Maria. Following the implosion of the genre-defining Grade (the band that many music writers and bands give credit to for the creation in 1995 of the screamo genre), its mastermind and creative leader Kyle Bishop was possessed to create something profoundly new and vibrant. He connected with Chris Gray (Zyon) and wall of sound axe-wielder Alan Nacinovic. The troupe was completed with a groove-laden rhythm section that can shatter the bones of the Gods - Derek Petrella on drums and multi-instrumentalist Mike de Eyre on bass. They chose the The Black Maria as their band name, which comes from the slang term given to a police patrol wagon - “The Deliverer of Death”

The Black Maria are a sexy, intense, melodic, audio jackhammer. Their live show grips the audience, invoking passion and rage, exposing the scars of the soul and sucking the life source out of every cell. By joining the Victory Records family, The Black Maria's mission will finally reach the masses. They head into the studio this July to record their debut album. The band is available for interviews and in-studio features. For more information on The Black Maria, go to www.theblackmaria.com.

Napalm Death Announces Album Release Date

Century Media Records has set October 5, 2004 as the North American release date for Napalm Death’s "Leaders Not Followers Part 2." 17 years after the release of their now legendary debut record, "Scum," British extreme metal legends Napalm Death deliver their second covers collection, which pays homage to hardcore, death, and thrash metal’s progenitors. "Leaders Not Followers Part 2" continues where 1999’s 5-track "Leaders Not Followers" EP left off, serving up 19 full-bodied tracks. Opening with Cryptic Slaughter’s “Lowlife,” the stakes rise and the band tears through Devastation’s “Devastation,” and whips into Hellhammer’s “Messiah,” a version that possibly outshines the original. In a ferocious fit the band plows through classic songs from Wehrmacht, Discharge, Master, Kreator, Die Kruezen, Sepultura and Hirax. As a bonus to long-time fans, and at the urging of long-time friend Shane Embury, the band’s first bass player, Jim Whiteley, performs here on Discharge’s “War’s No Fairytale” and Anti Cimex’s “Game Of The Arseholes.”

The album is still being recorded at Hendrix Studios (in Lublin, Poland) and soon we'll be mixed in Dug Out Studios in Uppsala, Sweden by Daniel Bergstrand (Meshuggah, In Flames, Strapping Young Lad).

Behemoth guitarist/vocalist Nergal commented:

"I've known Karl and all the guys in Nile for quite a few years now. Whenever we cross paths we always have a great time and get along really well. Moreover, I've always been totally astonished by their great works, precision, devotion and unquestionable originality. When I asked Karl, if he'd like to put some solo on the album, the reaction was very enthusiastic. It was a really quick job. I handed him a rough mix of the song and next night I found this great lead part in my email box. It sounded TERRIFIC! I'm more than happy about the fact of his contribution.
