Ozzfest Report - 12 July in Mansfield, MA
So, after quite some time and many doubts I have finally decided to share my thoughts about this year's Ozzfest. Actually, it's my first time on this festival since I'm from Europe and I've only been living in U.S. for two years now. Please, do consider this as you read along :)
I got to the Tweeter Center around 10:15 in the morning. Being my first time there, I wasn't sure how the whole thing was gonna go. The first thing that looked very weird were all those people on the parking lot who had brought BBQs and coolers and were hanging out by their cars. Very American, I thought. More...
Megadeth In Talks With Annihilator Axe Legend
BW&BK is reporting at their site bravewords.com that Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has revealed that he has been in talks with Annihilator guitar legend Jeff Waters about him possibly joining the ranks of the newly rejuvenated thrash legends.
"I’ve been talking to one of your countrymen about playing with me and it looks pretty good," Mustaine revealed about his recent communication with Waters.
"We’ve been talking quite a lot and my only fear is that he’s so good and he’s a leader of his own thing and this is an institution here, it’s a worldwide thing and, you know. I’ve already had some struggles with bringing in a hired gun that was a leader of another situation with Alan (Pitrelli). Alan’s a good guy, good player. I don’t think that he really could take going from being a leader in Savatage and TSO (Trans-Siberian Orchestra) to being, you know, second, or actually fourth, in Megadeth. I don’t think he could handle it. That’s my only fear about working with Jeff is that he’s a leader of his own thing.
But, we’re talkin’ and we’re talkin’ and I’m passionate about what I want to do and it may very well happen. We’ve obviously started a friendship and I’ve known of him for years. It may just be that this is a combination that will put him on the map and give me some stability because I have a lot of friends that are Canadian and every one of them is just fucking righteous."
This isn't the first time that a Mustaine-Waters collaboration has been spoken about. Waters was rumored to replace Jeff Young (So Far, So Good...So What! era) in the late '80s. More...

"The War Within", the band's fourth full-length release, features 10 tracks of "sonic devastation" and is said to be the group's "most unrelenting, yet dynamic offering that further proves why they are the undisputed leaders of their genre."

03. Act of Contrition

Dragonland Complete Work On Starfall
Dragonland, the Gothenburg, Sweden-based melodic metal sextet, have finished recording and mixing their third album, "Starfall", tentatively due in October through Century Media Records.
Commented guitarist Olof Mörck: "Of course, it's our best album so far, haha. Well, I really think the cliché is true this time, yet it is not in our hands to judge that. I hope the amount of work we have put in this album will be apparent to anyone who listens to it, and also the ambition we had to push the limits of this rather cliché-ridden genre.
"The recording of this album has gone very smooth, and the final result is exactly what we wanted, so the year we spent with pre-production really paid off. Having [EVERGREY's] Tom S Englund and Arnold Linberg as producers has been a privilege, they are both extremely talented guys! So far their Division One studio is pretty unknown due to that it is so new, though in my book it easily beats Los Angered and Studio Fredman where we recorded our first albums.
"As I have stated before, besides fans of the power metal genre, I recommend people who normally don't listen to that genre to check our 'Starfall', because even if it is rooted in the power metal genre, the music is far from limited to it. We will be delighted to hear people's opinions from October, c-ya'll then!"
"Starfall" track listing:
01. As Madness Took Me
02. The Returning
03. Starfall
04. Calling my Name
05. In Perfect Harmony
06. The Shores of our Land
07. The Dreamseeker
08. To the End of the World
09. The Book of Shadows Part I: A Story Yet Untold
10. The Book of Shadows Part II: The Curse of Qa'a
11. The Book of Shadows Part III: The Glendora Outbreak
Darkane To Begin Rehearsing Material For New Album
Swedish thrashers Darkane have posted the following message on their web site:
"Darkane has been rehearsing with [drummer] Peter [Wildoer] and so far it doesn't hurt in his wrist anymore but they can't be totally sure yet. Darkane will play next Saturday the 24th of July at Tullakroksfestivalen in Ängelholm, Sweden. If Peter still doesn't feel any pain after the show Darkane will immediately start rehearsing and later on record the new album. Let's hope!"
Darkane's last studio album, "Expanding Senses", was released in 2002 through Nuclear Blast Records
Angra Complete Work On New Album
Brazil's Angra have completed work on their follow-up to 2001's "Rebirth", tentatively due this fall through SPV Records (NTS Records in France). The band have posted the following message regarding the as-yet-untitled effort: "First of all, the songs are awesome! Really, really good! The production is perfect too, the sound of instruments is even heavier and clearer than in our previous albums. The band sounds more powerful and tighter as well.
"This is a very complex record, truly sophisticated. It's not just another metal album, it’s much more than that. The richness of the songs can be felt in the concept, the versatility, the spontaneity, the technique, the feeling and the emotions that flow throughout the whole record. It's easy to figure out our emotions in the tracks. It's a special thing, totally unconventional.
"The story is about the saga of a crusader knight that ends up disputing the expansionist ideals of the Catholic Church in the eleventh century. He is known as The Shadow Hunter. His way of thinking changes step by step until he gets to the point of beginning a new reforming order. There's a lot of things happening in his life and each song is a chapter of the story. It's amazing to follow the lyrics as you listen to the songs. Each situation is totally different from the other.
"Overall, this album is a bit longer than the others ANGRA has made so far. We tried to do something new and didn’t think twice about the possibility of experimenting. After all, we always focus in the artistic side and in what has been Angra's most striking mark since day one: ORIGINALITY!
"Today is July 14th and we are leaving for Japan. We'll meet Kiko there (he's going from Brazil) and the three of us are gonna promote the album. We're doing a couple of acoustic gigs, plus interviews, photo sessions and so on. However, we look forward to coming back to Brazil and showing to the fans what we achieved in the new album, ANGRA's very best in our opinion."

Sabbath, Priest, Slayer Teach Heavy Metal 101
Jon Wiederhorn recounts Wednesday's Ozzfest at the Jones Beach Amphitheater in an article entitled 'Sabbath, Priest, Slayer Teach Heavy Metal 101 At Ozzfest '04' on VH1.com. Here are some highlights:
When a guy in the next row throws up on the seat in front of him and passes out on it, and when two girls 10 feet away lift their tops and make out, and it all happens before 7 p.m., you know you must be at Ozzfest.
And speaking of Superjoint Ritual singer Phil Anselmo:
The singer repeatedly urged fans to stand up and threatened to beat up anyone who remained seated, and when someone in the crowd shouted out the name of his old band, things got ugly. "Pantera's dead," Anselmo replied. "You can boo all you want, it's a waste of breath."
