Unearthing the Metal Underground: Atramentum
One would think that underground metal is perpetually abundant with forward-thinking, innovative music. While that’s the case with subgenera as they emerge, maniacal devotion has typically led to a prominent degree of homogeneity within most styles. But within the cracks certain bands maintain their resolve to create music that matters, no matter how many or few people will latch on. For a decade now, the Atramentum has been sharpening its tools to create a sonic sculpture of bizarre, left-field black metal that’s truly its own. More...
Anthrax To Release 40th Anniversary Blu-Ray
July 18th 2021 marked the 40th anniversary of thrash metal pioneers Anthrax. The celebration began in May of last year and culminated on that July 16th/17th with a global livestream event, shot at the Los Angeles soundstage/studio The Den. For two-plus hours, Anthrax performed an extensive set of hits and deep cuts pulled from their vast catalogue. Today, Anthrax announces that the entire performance, plus never-before-seen rehearsal footage, and Scott Ian’s New York City “walking tour” pointing out the spots that played a role in Anthrax’s formation and history, will be released in North America on July 15th on Blu-Ray/CD/Digital (Megaforce). "XL" will also have a UK/European digital release on July 15th (Nuclear Blast), followed by a Blu-Ray release (inc. 2CD + 1Blu-Ray) on July 22nd.
"Forty years doesn’t feel like 40 years," said drummer Charlie Benante. "Sometimes I have to remind myself about how long this strange trip has been. I enjoy playing these songs, they’re such a huge part of my life, and I know for a lot of our fans, they play a big part in theirs as well."
From the night of the livestream, bassist Frank Bello recalled, "For me, each song was like reading through a scrapbook of my life and the band’s career. Specifically, ‘Madhouse,’ one of my first recordings with the band, and then to where we are now with 'Blood Eagle Wings.' What a great ride it’s been, I’m very grateful.
"Even though we were performing in a studio with just the crew there, we played that set like we were in front of 50,000 screaming fans,” said vocalist Joey Belladonna. "I felt like we made a full-on connection with everyone watching from their homes or wherever, and that they connected with us. It was quite an intense experience." More...

The duo are joined on their debut album by the dynamic rhythm section of drummer extraordinaire Simon Phillips (ex-Toto, Derek Sherinian), and bassist Joey Vera (Fates Warning, Armored Saint).

Battlelore Posts New Music Video Online
This Friday, the time has come to wield your sword and charge back to the battlefield, as Finnish heavy metal force Battlelore returns with their brand new studio album, The Return Of The Shadow. More than 10 long years since their last offering, Doombound (2011), June 3 will finally see the Tolkien-inspired masters of epic, fantasy metal release their much awaited, seventh record on Napalm Records.
Previously released first singles "Firekeeper" and "Chambers Of Fire" have already showcased the exceptional songwriting skills the Lappeenranta-based fantasy metal warriors are offering on their forthcoming album, and now, the band has premiered a music video for magical new single, "Elvenking".
Video director Markku Kirves says: "It is very rare to get an opportunity to write this kind of epic video, so I didn’t hesitate to say yes when Jyri messaged me if I would be interested in making it. Back in the day, Battlelore’s 'Storm of the Blades' was one of the first videos I directed, so it was nice to unite again with the band."
The band adds: "We knew Markkus's talent as a video director and his enthusiasm, and when we asked him to shoot the video for us, it was so overwhelming and a pure pleasure to work with such a professional he is. The 'Elvenking' video enters to Tolkien's Middle-earth from multiple angles, combining noticeable characters and scenes from Tolkien's written poetry." More...

His vocal style, performance, personality, and work ethic are a perfect fit for us and we cannot wait for everyone to hear the first song that we’ve created together, 'Psalm Of Agony’ (coming June 17). Prepare for the best incarnation of Enterprise Earth yet."
Adds Worland, “After months of touring with the band, I am happy to assimilate into the entity that is Enterprise Earth. ‘Psalm Of Agony’ is the first step in a culmination of efforts only just beginning.”

Massacre Announces New EP
Following a slaying performance at Maryland Deathfest last weekend, Floridian death metal juggernauts, Massacre have announced plans to release a new EP titled "Mythos" on July 1st with Nuclear Blast. Today, the band has revealed the record's first single "Behind The Serpent's Curse," which features Anders Odden (Cadaver), that is accompanied by a b-side track "The Dunwich Horror."
Commenting on the new single and b-side, vocalist Kam Lee states:
"'Behind the Serpent's Curse' is lyrically inspired by and roughly based on the Lovecraft short story 'The Curse Of Yig,' but is also the most metaphorically lyrical based song I've written in Massacre, and that is directly inspired by actual real life circumstances. It acts like a warning of sorts and is a foretelling of how it's been like dealing with certain toxic individuals in my life. It indirectly relates to individuals whom always seem to come in pairs, and how, like serpents these people spread their venomous poison (lies).
"I also had guest vocalist Anders Odden (Cadaver) join me on this particular track because lyrically it is very similar in theme to the Cadaver track "Feed The Pigs" that I made a guest appearance on. Having two distinct vocalist on a track that lyrically is based on the concepts of duality of untrusting individuals wasn't just an after thought either, I always intended this track to be represented by two vocalist.
"'The Dunwich Horror' is a more traditional track in both lyrical approach and aesthetics. It's just basically loosely based upon the Lovecraft story of the same name, but still resonates upon the core theme of twins. Two seemingly evil brother abominations brought into this world by a grotesque and hideous matriarch. I guess one could say I am suggesting that behind every pair of twin lying toxic men is always an equally conniving female antagonist. Yeah, sure, I'm simply reflecting upon my own past experiences, but it seems to be the case in a lot of similar circumstances.
"Musically both tracks are laden in the same old school death metal style that can be found on 'Resurgence.' It's a sound and style that carries over and shall continue to be the core essence of Massacre under my helm." More...
Municipal Waste Debuts "Electrified Brain" Video
Richmond's hard-charging, thrash metal maniacs Municipal Waste have debuted the title track from their massively-anticipated 7th studio album, "Electrified Brain," that's due out July 1st via Nuclear Blast. Their third single, "Electrified Brain" arrives in the grotesque form of a face-melting horror short directed by esteemed FX artist Norman Cabrera (From Dusk Till Dawn, The Walking Dead, Kill Bill).
Commenting on the new single and video, guitarist Ryan Waste says:
"'Electrified Brain' is a tale of revenge and redemption, continuing the concept of our song ‘Mental Shock’ rounding out the ‘Deathripper Trilogy.’ It’s about being wrongfully accused and stripped of your rights, only to overcome and break free through the electric power of heavy music. We called upon our friend Norman Cabrera once again to handle the title track music video after the incredible job he did on ‘Slime and Punishment.’ Visually he went above and beyond and it became a much more cinematic experience thanks to Rob Lucas at Wolfpack Studios."
Norman Cabrera adds about making the video:
"I pulled out all the stops for this video. It's in the spirit of classic Heavy Metal videos like Ozzy's 'Bark at the Moon' and Dio's 'The Last in Line.' Sci Fi-Horror imagery lends itself very well to the vibe of the band. We’re channeling a bit of Cronenberg and Carpenter. The best sci fi movies of the past often take current events and put them in a fantastic setting. The video takes place in a not so distant dystopian future where your individuality can be taken away by a faceless organization. It’s a wild concept but not too far off from our world today." Eluveitie Releases New Single "Aidus"
After three years of silence, Swiss metal legends Eluveitie step out of the darkness again, raising their voices to herald a new era of the band's stunning career. Today, the band releases their new single 'Aidus', following on from the huge success of their last album 'Ategnatos' but also displaying a ever-before-seen side of the band.
Founding member Chrigel Glanzmann commented on their approach:
"Definitely one of the harshest Eluveitie songs ever. It's the sheer consequence of our spiritual journey with Ategnatos: we're no longer a 'Celtic Metal' band... a metal band singing about Celtic history. We're Celts playing metal music from all our hearts.
"We're no longer a 'Pagan Metal' band. We are metal music playing pagans, from all our hearts, meshing principles of our modern societies with our ancient message.
That's probably the best way to describe our new single. Deal with it!" More...
Stratovarius Reveals New Album Details
earMUSIC has announced the release of Stratovarius' new studio album, "Survive," which arrives on September 23. Pre-order it here. The video for the title track, "Survive", will premiere on Friday, June 3.
Seven years after the release of their last album, "Eternal," Stratovarius once more prove their status as a flagship symphonic metal band and they return with a big bang.
The band remains on the pulse of time with the new release. The environment and humanity's future have always been an important and recurring theme in Stratovarius' music. Therefore, Survive - the title of the new album and the accompanying artwork - aren't surprising, especially in the view of the current global situation.
A blistering comeback from one of heavy metal's most seminal bands, "Survive" is full of dynamics and drama, feeding on a wide range of emotions along the way. But the core message that this triumphant sonic endeavour conveys is one of struggle, defiance, hope, and victory. Best exemplified by its profoundly rousing title track, Survive is the Stratovarius spirit in exquisite musical form, with all the darkness and light that goes with it.
"We spent five or six days solid, trying to come up with the lyrics for that song," notes Jens Johansson. "When we finally settled on that punchline for the chorus, it was a good song about survival, and it all just seemed to fit. It fits with the history of the band, too, because we managed to survive as long as we have. This band has been through some strange days! The original lineup formed in 1984, so it's been a long story. It was the middle of the summer, there were forest fires everywhere, there was a global pandemic, and all kinds of crazy shit was going on. Some of the lyrics are perhaps less uplifting than they could have been, but that reflects our mood at the time. There's a lot of positive stuff on there, as well!"
Tracklisting:
1. Survive
2. Demand
3. Broken
4. Firefly
5. We Are Not Alone
6. Frozen in Time
7. World on Fire
8. Glory Days
9. Breakaway
10. Before the Fall
11. Voice of Thunder More...
Black Royal Signs With M-Theory Audio
Finnish metal quartet Black Royal – whose blend of lurching sludge and groove-laden death metal is inflected with lyrics inspired by Scandinavian and Sami mythology – have signed with M-Theory Audio. The group's third full-length album "Earthbound" is set for release later this year. Pre-order links will be revealed in the weeks to come. In the meantime, the music video for the title track can be viewed below. Black Royal is also set to unleash their wicked brew on live stages across Finland and elsewhere this summer.
Says the band of the inspiration for the title track, "It started out as more of a tribute to Crowbar - one of Black Royal's big favorites - but took a turn in a bit more epic direction. The lyrical story line was inspired by the ancient Scandinavian/Sami myths of the netherworld. For example, 'northern fire beliefs' have been associated with perceptions of the afterlife. The aurora borealis were considered as the lives of those who died by the sword, those who fell in the war, or those who were violently killed. Their constant fighting and the blood flowing from their wounds were reflected in the northern sky like northern lights.
"Also, in early arctic primeval communes, a social life of a man was left shorter than his physical one. If at old age one became useless in the eyes of his community, his presence wasn't socially noticed. If an old man couldn't provide food for himself and take part in hunting or cultivation, his children were asked to escort him on to his final path. He was a useless man to that community and that decision was a social death. The elder man was allowed to decide for himself the time of his own death and that decision was honored thoroughly." Capra Shares "Red Guillotine" Music Video
Lafayette, Louisiana-based metallic hardcore outfit CAPRA today unleashes a new video for "Red Guillotine." The track comes by way of the band's critically lauded In Transmission full-length, released via Blacklight Media/Metal Blade Records last year.
Comments vocalist Crow Lotus of the powerful track, "I wrote this song about how helpless it feels to be prey in a predatory world. Women should be celebrated for standing their ground, not ostracized and humiliated." More...
Amon Amarth To Release New Album In August
Undisputed kings of Viking heavy metal, Amon Amarth, have announced their twelfth studio album, "The Great Heathen Army." The 9-track aural assault will be released on August 5 via Metal Blade Records. Pre-orders available now with the first 1000 orders at the band's European Victorious Merch store receiving a free signed poster.
Today's announcement is highlighted by the release of brand new track and accompanying music video, "Get In The Ring", which was written for AEW pro-wrestling star Erick Redbeard, who also stars in the music video. Stream the track here and watch the video below.
Speaking on the announcement of their new album, Amon Amarth vocalist Johan Hegg shares: "Overall, The Great Heathen Army is one of the heavier albums we've made. There are some dark and heavy songs that are really powerful and in-your-face, but we obviously have some trademark melodic Amon Amarth songs on there as well, and a few surprises too. It's a really well-balanced album. It sounds great. Andy Sneap is awesome. It was great to be able to work with him again."
Gutiarist Olavi Mikkonen adds: "We've been away making new music and we're back with new darker, more death-metal sounding album. If Berserker was our 'heavy metal' album, then The Great Heathen Army is our 'death metal' album. But with that said, it's still very much contemporary Amon Amarth, but perhaps style-wise we have gone back to our roots a little bit." More...

Hideous Divinity Melts Faces in Mesa, Arizona
What comes to mind when you think of Italy? Great food, great wine, fantastic scenery? How about death metal? No? Ok, well there’s such a thing and leading the charge is Hideous Divinity from Roma. They’re currently on a package tour that includes Hypocrisy, Carach Angran and The Agonist and I had the pleasure of checking them out during their most recent stop in Mesa, Arizona.
I have to admit that I’ve heard great things about Hideous Divinity but have never had the opportunity to check them out until now. Brutal, relentless, technical death metal are the only phrases needed to describe this band. They are raw as rusted steel and to the point. This band doesn’t need an extravagant stage show to get their point across, they just sheer your head off without remorse with their ferocity.
They kicked off their set with “Acheron, Stream of Woe” and if anyone in the audience was in the “it’s only the first band” mindset, it was over within the first 30 seconds. The crowd was now fully awake and in death metal show mode. Headbanging, moshpit shenanigans and beers destroyed. Hideous Divinity had flipped the switch!
Enrico Di Lorenzo stalked the stage from side to side throughout the whole set. Guitarist Enrico Schettino locked down his side of the stage with constant riffing. Bassist Stefano Franceschini is beast within his own right and his fingers were a blur the whole time. It goes without saying that no death metal band is complete without their blast beat machine/drummer, and Giulio Galati made it look easy all the while wearing his headphone monitors. A true master of his craft.
After a quick and scarring 6 song set, Hideous Divinity had definitely made an impression upon the Mesa, Arizona crowd. If these desert metalheads didn’t know anything about Hideous Divinity before the show, they knew now… After a round of grazies from the band, they promised to return to Arizona soon. Judging from the applause given, in addition to the clamoring over picks and setlists gifted to them from the band, they’ll be back for Hideous Divinity next time and in greater numbers. More...
