Apocalypse Orchestra Premieres New Song

Swedish medieval metal act Apocalypse Orchestra teamed up with MetalUnderground.com for the premiere of the new song "The Garden of Earthly Delights." The track is the first full song the band has released and it will appear on the upcoming debut full length album "The End is Nigh," which is set to drop via Despotz Records on May 12th.

Standing with one leg in medieval times and the other in modern metal, Apocalypse Orchestra weaves a own special tapestry of music. The tones of the hurdy gurdy and the bagpipe entwines the heavy guitars and music separated by over 800 years meet.

The band was formed by musical partners in crime Mikael and Erik based in Gävle, Sweden. Inspired by a love for both folk music and slow metal, the duo decided to combine the two. With a foundation of original music and lyrics but also incorporating melodies from as far back as the 11th century, the goal was to create a musical homage to a era long since gone.

The songs on the debut release tell of flagellants, plague doctors, tales of hell, the meaninglessness of war and of suffering; they are all chapters in the band's grimoire. To balance it out, Apocalypse Orchestra also shines a light on medieval art, science and enlightenment.

When several songs had been composed, the band was completed with the addition of Jonas, Rikard and Andreas. The Orchestra has since played live on many occasions and has been seen at both clubs and festivals, as well as gigs with the Gävle Symphonic Orchestra.

Don't be fooled though, Apocalypse Orchestra looks forward as well as inward. The band seeks answers to some of history’s big questions: How did people find meaning and momentum? How did they find joy in life when two out of three died from the black death? Was there happiness under the heavy yokes of faith, and what was the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

The track listing for "The End is Nigh" is:

1. The Garden of Earthly Delights
2. Pyre
3. Flagellants' Song
4. Exhale
5. Theatre of War
6. The Great Mortality
7. To Embark
8. Here Be Monsters More...

Cancelled Premieres New EP

Hailing from southern Canada, Cancelled is the experimental recording project of Marc Bourgon (Fuck The Facts / Greber). Spawned as a way to pass time during long tour drives, this project has cultivated itself into a meaningful creative outlet.

“For the past 10 years of my life I have been constantly writing music,” explains Bourgon. “Whether it be jotting down ideas on a notepad, droning out in our practice space or fleshing out ideas on a laptop it’s something that I have a hard time not doing on a daily basis.”

Those ideas are about to come to life with three song EP "Tenebrific," and today we're exclusively premiering all three tracks ahead of the March 3rd, 2017 release date. Check out this eclectic release below, and be sure to let us know what you think of this new musical endeavor!

This time around Bourgon asked Kurt Ballou of Godity studios to handle the mix and Ryan Butler of Arcane Digital to master it. The combination gave the songs the aggressive stain Bourgon wanted them to have. “Working with those two was great. I’ve always wanted to work with Kurt (Ballou) and Butler (Ryan) can do no wrong as far as I’m concerned.”

While strictly a studio project for the time being, Cancelled has plans to eventually move itself into the live setting. “It’s something that I have been tooling around with for awhile. Not having a drummer makes things tough to do live. I would want things to sound huge so it might be a minute until I can pull something live off.”

Edge Of Paradise Premieres "Alive" Video

California outfit Edge Of Paradise is on the cusp of releasing a new five song EP titled "Alive" on March 10th, and today we're bringing you an exclusive look at the title track with a brand new video directed by Val Rassi.

Like what you hear? The title track is also available as a single via iTunes here.

Edge Of Paradise front woman Margarita Monet states: "This song is extremely contagious, with the heavy hitting/ industrial beat, and a chorus that'll get your blood pumping!"

She goes on to say, "'Alive' is dealing with us humans being so caught up in the digital world, obsessed with convenience and monetary gain, we have begun to sacrifice our humanity. We are becoming corporate led consumer machines! We get lost in the enticing virtual reality that we forget what real human interaction feels like. Sometimes I want to break away from bombardment of advertisements, social standards, never ending race with time and just breathe, and remember what it's like to feel alive! To connect with our fellow humans and the world!"

For this EP, the band is exploring it's heavier side with a new industrial edge, yet keeping the dynamic and melodic Edge Of Paradise sound. The group comments: “This is our best music to date! We were so fortunate to work with amazing, powerhouse people on this CD, and are confident that the outcome is the most exciting Edge Of Paradise musical experience yet!"

The Hollywood group has toured over 30 states and is excited to hit the road again in the spring. This year the band plans to tour US, South America and Europe with already set date at the Female Metal Event in Eindhoven, Netherlands, playing alongside Delain. More...

Riotous Indignation Premieres "The End" Video

Everybody remember Riotous Indignation? A few months back we had the pleasure of bringing you some thrashing hardcore from the Chicago outfit with the "This World" single, and today we've got a killer new video as well.

Check out our exclusive premiere of "The End" below, taken off the band's latest EP release "Violentus Musicae."

Considering current events, the clip couldn't arrive at a more topical moment as it tackles the endless cycle of gun violence in the band's home town. The video was directed by vocalist/guitarist Mike Repel, who had this to say:

"This song and video were inspired by the ongoing and pervasive gun violence that has been a growing problem for decades in Chicago. This song is actually written from the victims perspective in a drive-by shooting. As he faces his demise, he reflects on the misdeeds he has done, and contemplates the disposition of his eternal soul."

This Chicago-based crossover institution was formed in 2015 by Repel (author of The Music Industry Self Help Guide) and Bob Clayton, who were previous band mates in a metal project called Instant Decay circa 2006-2008.

Riotous Indignation spent a majority of its first year writing and refining several songs, four of which have been made available on the "Violentus Musicae" EP, which was mixed by Nick Bellmore and Mastered by Zeuss. Bear Mace Premieres "I Bleed For Vengeance"

A new five-headed monstrosity is headed towards you, and it has the strength of a bear that has the strength of TWO bears!

Bear Mace was born suckling from the same venomous tit that sourced lifeblood to the likes of Bolt Thrower, Massacre, and Death, and now the group is prepping the "Butchering The Colossus" album for release in early March.

The band’s origins date back to 2012, when vocalist Lord Devourer and guitarist Crossbow Death became engaged in a heated debate about the use of guns during grizzly bear attacks on schools (Devourer was in favor of giving the bears guns; Crossbow suggested a 24-hour background check first). Just before blood was shed, the two decided on a more productive, yet equally violent, outlet for their frustrations. Thus began Bear Mace!

No matter which side of the arming bears argument you stand on, you'll want to check out our exclusive advance stream of the third track "I Bleed For Vengeance" culled from "Butchering The Colossus" below.

1. Death Of A Constellation
2. Cyclone Of Shrapnel

Nightrage Premieres New Single "Affliction"

Today, Swedish melodic death metal act Nightrage has teamed up with Metal Underground.com to unleash the new single "Affliction." The song is lifted from the band's upcoming full length "The Venomous," which will be issued via Despotz Records on March 31st. Pre-orders can be made at this location.

"Affliction" sees the band at it's hardest hitting and most melodic in a fifteen year history. The band commented: "'Affliction' has depth and character and is 100% Nightrage. We believe it has the potential to become a fan favourite. With 'Affliction' we wanted to express a more melodic and diverse side to our song writing, without losing the heaviness that Nightrage is well known for. The concept behind the track 'Affliction' is focused on mankind's endless search to find a meaning to our empty lives. Lives that we feel we can not control, and therefore we seek to find a greater purpose to our existence."

"The Venomous" is a relentless tale of extinction, told with as much 'venomous' aggression as there are intriguing and mesmerizing melodies. Memorable hooks and some of the catchiest choruses that metal has seen in decades does nothing to compromise the brutality and honesty that Nightrage is known for. The music is catchy and extreme. Lyrically, the album deals with the failure of mankind and how we as human beings are racing towards our own extinction. More...

Xandria Hears The "Call Of Destiny"

It is only ten days until the release of the exciting new album "Theater Of Dimensions" via Napalm Records (January 27th) from symphonic metal act Xandria. The band has been absolutely dominating the subgenre for nearly 20 years. Pre-order the album now at this location.

On the album the band commented: "We brought back plenty of memories, sometimes just bits and pieces, but those stuck to our heads. And it made us see who we are and where we wanted to take our music. All this makes the most colourful Xandria album so far. It contains our most heavy and most emotional moments.”

For "Theater Of Dimensions" the band teamed up again with producer Joost van den Broek. The album features guest vocal appearances from Henning Basse (Firewind), Zaher Zorgati (Myrath), Björn Strid (Soilwork) and Ross Thompson (Van Canto). There is a soundtrack-like, orchestral finesse inherent to the compositions, echoed by pounding groove and sophisticated shredding. Folklore and ballad chime in ("Forsaken Love"), heavy thrash rears its ugly head ("We Are Murderers (We All)"), and overall there is no doubt: Xandria are not only fearless, they are at their most entertaining and thrilling!

Saille Premieres "Genesis 11:1-9"

Following the stellar "Eldritch" album (reviewed here), Saille's follow-up release "Gnosis" is on the horizon for a spring release, and today we're premiering a new track from the impending full-length album.

Check out "Genesis 11:1-9," the fourth track cut off this nine song concept release, in the SoundCloud player below.

For those not familiar with the Bible, the chapter and verse segment in question deals with the tower of Babel, in which the biblical deity takes offense to the people of the world working together towards a common cause and building a structure that could reach heaven (presumably he's not happy about skyscrapers or space stations either, but as of yet hasn't shown up to confuse our languages and cast us far and wide for those offenses).

In addition to sporting a darker, more powerful sound, "Gnosis" sees some lineup shifting within the Belgian symphonic black metal group, which is now operating as a five piece. Saille frontman Dennie Grondelaers explains about the writing process and lyrics:

"With 'Gnosis' (Greek for 'knowledge') we venture into the world of the Promethean ideal and its Luciferian counterpart. This album explores a multitude of historical, mythological and fictional sources that tell us about the strife for knowledge and its (potentially devastating) consequences.

1. Benei ha'Elohim
2. Pandaemonium Gathers
3. Blôt
4. Genesis 11:1-9
5. Before the Crawling Chaos
6. Prometheus
7. Thou, My Maker

Static Tension Premieres "Back Inside" Video

Today we're helping to herald that release with an exclusive premiere of a lyric video for "Back Inside" - check it out below!

Singer Rob Rom commented: "Walking away from someone or something isn't always easy, but sometimes you must lock the door and throw away the key, that is the premise of 'Back Inside', being let down so many times that you would rather just go without, a little piece of poetry with a rough edge."

The band's self-described "progressive grunge" takes the sound of Alice in Chains and blends it with the more progressive leanings of bands like Tool and Kings X.

You may have noticed Static Tension's name on our site before, as the band gave an epic tale of a steaming crowd at a Rammstein concert for our weekly Pit Stories column.
