Khanate Calls It Quits

"Extreme doom" metal band KHANATE, the brainchild of Stephen O'Malley (THORR'S HAMMER, BURNING WITCH, SUNN 0))), LOTUS EATERS) and James Plotkin (OLD, SCORN, ATOMSMASHER), has disbanded. In a statement, Plotkin writes, "I have decided to leave KHANATE due to the lack of commitment of certain members. The decision was a difficult one, as I've put six years and immeasurable amounts of creativity into the band hoping to take it as far as possible. The past year has brought about many missed opportunities and the realization that some players are more concerned with personal careers and day jobs rather than the advancement of music as an artform.

"I will continue to work with drummer Tim Wyskida on a number of other projects, mainly KHLYST and our improvisational duo.

"Gratitude to all those that have supported what we have done and acknowledged our importance in modern music.

"The companion album to 'Capture & Release' is currently being mixed. This yet untitled work consists of spontaneous recordings made during the 'C&R' sessions dating back to February 2005. This will be my final work in KHANATE. There are plans for Japanese issues of the self-titled and 'Things Viral' CDs with expanded packaging and bonus discs with unreleased material."

Bullet For My Valentine and DropDead Gorgeous

I happened to be lucky, or unlucky enough considering the quality of the bands to win some free tickets via my local radio station to this show, and since it has been over a year since I've been to a concert I decided to go.

I can honestly say before the show despite being from Oklahoma City I had never heard of Rikits and there was actually another band on the bill that they had replaced, but they, in fact, were the ones who made the night worth it. They are a great 5 piece act, with a very heavy sound throughout all of their songs. The singing leaves alot to be desired but the band played a solid 5 song set. They sound a lot like Dry Kill Logic, so if you are into those types of bands I would highly recommend checking them out, as they are creating quite a buzz in the area, and have a very well put together guitar/bass trio.

The second band, Drop Dead Gorgeous, was screamo-core Underoath type and I am totally biased to hating this type of music, so I will just say they played a 6 song set, and the crowd was semi-into them considering the headliner I suppose this band was a good fit. They were from Denver, Colorado and apparently doing fairly well in the business, but I just could not get into them.

Lastly Bullet for My Valentine came on stage. I've never been a fan of the music I've heard by them, but I honestly haven't heard much. I heard that damn "4 Words To Choke Upon" all the time on Madden, so I was halfway looking forward to how they played it live. When they took stage the electricity in the small venue jumped. It was a max 1,000 crowd but honestly those types of shows are the most initimate and in my opinoin the best. Bullet For My Valentine came out strong with "4 Words" and to my surprise they were alot harder live then I could have anticipated. I was really pleased with the sound, and so was the crowd. There was a lot of crowd surfing, but unfortunately no moshing, which at 7 beers I was extremely hoping for. They played all of their singles, most of which have names I cant remember, but they did play "Tears Dont Fall" and their most recent single of which also cannot remember. I took my brother who is really into this band and he said they played really well compared to the album and did, in fact, play all of their singles as well as a few more popular songs from their discography. It was a decent show, and had I known about it, I would have been willing to pay the $10 just to see Rikits. All in all it was a great show.

Obituary Mixing New DVD

OBITUARY frontman John Tardy has posted the message at the band's website:

"Things are moving right along with the DVD. DT (Donald Tardy - drums) and I spent the week at The RedRoom with Mark Prator mixing the audio portion of the DVD. We expect the first round of the video on Tuesday, so we can start to work with that. If everything goes well we are trying to release it December - January. I will let you know more about the release date and what to expect from the DVD when we get further along. So far it sounds pretty heavy and I am really getting excited. I still can't believe we have waited this long to do one but, that is just the way it worked out."

Solitude Aeturnus Reveal 'Alone' Artwork

The cover artwork for Texas-based long-running heavy doomsters SOLITUDE AETURNUS' sixth studio album, entitled "Alone", has been posted online at this location (artwork created by Travis Smith).

Due in Europe on November 10 through Massacre Records, "Alone" was recorded at Nomad Studios in Carrolton, Texas with Sterling Winfield (PANTERA) and J.T. Longoria (KING DIAMOND) sharing engineering duties. A deal is currently being negotiated with an as-yet-undisclosed label for a North American release during the same month.

Commented guitarist John Perez: "This is easily some of heaviest and most overcast material that we've ever done. It's bleak and at the same time we've pulled a slightly more metallic edge to the overall album. It's a little different sound for us but one that I've been striving to attain for some time now. In fact it is the best-sounding record we've ever done. A polished yet HEAVY as hell album to my ears. We're all extremely happy with the overall results." More...

My Dying Bride Post 'Deeper Down' Video Online

MY DYING BRIDE's video for the song "Deeper Down" has been posted online at YouTube.com. According to director Charlie Granberg, the clip is "about a guy that is so filled with grief and self-pity that he sees the world as totally black, even though you get a hint in the beginning of the video that it's summer and all. Then his visions and view of the world takes over. And it just gets darker and darker from there. Is he about to commit suicide or just taking a swim? That's up for you to decide. I have tried working on a subconcious level with a lot of symbolism and metaphors, but still trying to make it somewhat documentary-like and believable."

"Deeper Down" comes off MY DYING BRIDE's new album, "A Line of Deathless Kings", due on October 9 via Peaceville/Snapper. The LP, which was recorded at at Academy Studios and was mixed at Chapel Studios, will also be made available as a special edition and as a limited double-vinyl release. The "Deeper Down" single was released September 18. More...
