This Week In Metal - August 24th, 2006
A third week, and to my surprise Slayer isn't number 1. Strapping Young Lad keeps the #1 spot for the second straight week. Meanwhile Slayer is at their heels and I would bet good money they takeover the top spot next week. Hatebreed's new album Supremecy could be the only thing that comes inbetween all of that but I highly doubt it. All That Remains holds strong as one of 4 bands that have stayed in the top 10 since TWIM was brought back. The second biggest highlight of the chart is the fact that All Shall Perish has broken thru and taken a spot inside the top 10. I've been a fan of these boys for a while and its amazing to see their name share spots with the likes of Shadows Fall and Unearth. And now for the chart courtesy of CMJ :
Rank | L/W | Band | Album | Weeks | Peak |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 1 | Strapping Young Lad | The New Black | 3 | 1 |
2 | * | Slayer | Christ Illusion | 1 | 2 |
3 | * | Hatebreed | Supremecy | 1 | 3 |
4 | 2 | All That Remains | The Fall of Ideals | 3 | 2 |
5 | 7 | Unearth | III: The Eyes of Fire | 2 | 5 |
6 | 10 | Human Abstract | Nocturne | 2 | 6 |
7 | 3 | Shadows Fall | Fallout From the War | 3 | 1 |
8 | 6 | VoiVod | Katorz | 2 | 6 |
9 | 4 | Between the Buried and Me | The Anatomy Of | 3 | 4 |
10 | * | All Shall Perish | The Price Of Exsistance | 1 | 10 |
And now for the tunes, with a drastic change in this weeks chart. Unearth jumps from seven to first, while Slayer's Cult drops from first to tenth. Only six songs stayed on the chart, while we had four really strong debuts from great bands. Hatebreed, Mastodon and the new ATR single. Not to mention the ever-growing popularity of Human Abstract debuts. The singles chart is always shaky as the seeming flavor of the week is always ahead here, and now for the music, courtesy of MusicMatch:
Rank | L/W | Band | Song | Weeks | Peak |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 7 | Unearth | The Glorious Nightmare | 2 | 1 |
2 | * | The Human Abstract | Crossing The Rubicon | 1 | 2 |
3 | * | Hatebreed | Defeatist | 2 | 3 |
4 | * | Mastodon | The Wolf Is Loose | 1 | 4 |
5 | 4 | Stone Sour | 30-30/150 | 3 | 2 |
6 | 2 | Lamb of God | Redneck | 3 | 2 |
7 | * | All That Remains | This Calling | 1 | 7 |
8 | 10 | Strapping Young Lad | You Suck | 2 | 8 |
9 | 3 | Shadows Fall | Will To Rebuild | 3 | 1 |
10 | 1 | Slayer | Cult | 2 | 1 |
Wolf Announce Release Date, Video Clip And More
Swedish metallers Wolf have announced an October 3rd North American release date for their fourth album, "The Black Flame", to be released through Prosthetic Records. Artwork for the up-coming effort has been posted here. The band is also preparing the first video clip from the new album, to be done for the opening song, "I Will Kill Again". Wolf had this to say on the subject;
Hi, all. We're at the house (haunted of course) in the town off Umeå in Sweden recording the video for the song I Will Kill Again from the upcoming album. Director Owe R Kill Lingwall (Nocturnal Rites) is doing his very best to make us look evil (that means he's doing nothing, cause we're already evil). Tormentor [bassist Mikael Goding] is happy cause Westham kicked Charltons arse. Axeman [guitarist Johannes Losbäck] is happy cause he likes metal. Hammershark [drummer Tobias Kellgren] is happy cause he's getting paid tomorrow and Viper [vocalist/guitarist Niklas Stållvind] is not happy cause he's being tortured by the Killer. And yes...Celtic Frost rules.
The tracklist for "The Black Flame" looks like this:
01 - I Will Kill Again
02 - At The Graveyard
03 - Black Magic
04 - The Bite
05 - Make Friends With Your Nightmares
06 - Demon
07 - The Dead
08 - Seize The Night
09 - Steelwinged Savage Reaper
10 - Children Of The Black Flame
Nothingface Vocalist Talks About Side-Project
In a recent interview conducted by Greg Maki of Live-Metal.net, NOTHINGFACE vocalist Matt Holt discussed the new project featuring NOTHINGFACE members Tom Maxwell (guitar) and Jerry Montano (bass), former PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul and MUDVAYNE members Chad Gray (vocals) and Greg Tribbett (guitar).
Live-Metal: How is this new band or project or whatever it is with Tom and Jerry and Vinnie Paul and the MUDVAYNE guys going to affect NOTHINGFACE?
Matt Holt: "I don't think it'll affect us at all. First of all, Tom is 100-percent — I mean, NOTHINGFACE is his baby. And Chad and Greg, they're not going to leave MUDVAYNE. It's something that especially Tom and Chad and Jerry had talked about for a very long time, and Vinnie and Greg became part of it over time. I'm happy for those guys to finally do this. If anything, it'll probably help us because if it puts Tom and Jerry in front of mainstream people, it's just gonna bring more attention to us. I'm not looking at it as something that's hindering us or anything else like that. I think it's cool. Actually, I haven't heard it. I haven't gotten a chance to hear any of it yet. I can't even tell you what it sounds like. I've heard it was kinda Southern metal-ish. I can imagine what those guys would put together knowing all those guys so well. But it's gonna be good. People should be excited about it if they are. It's not going to affect NOTHINGFACE at all."
Live-Metal: How did [NOTHINGFACE] get back together again? More...
Photos Of Dimebag Tribute In Newfoundland
A tribute to late PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and DEATH/CONTROL DENIED mainman Chuck Schuldiner has been painted on a wall in downtown St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Check out photos of the mural at this location.
Abbott was shot to death just moments into a DAMAGEPLAN concert on December 8, 2004 at a Columbus, Ohio club. His killer, a disturbed 25-year-old ex-Marine, was slain by a police officer at the scene.
This past Sunday (August 20) would have Abbott's 40th birthday.
Schuldiner passed away on December 13, 2001 after a battle with pontine glioma, a rare type of brain tumor.
New Interview With Alice Cooper Online
Canada.com: Most young rock bands play video games and party backstage. What do old rockers like you do back there?
Alice: The funny thing is I get there before a show and I watch really bad kung fu movies — and I mean really bad ones. I'm not talking about ones that you would ever recognize. Things like "The Seven Golden Vampires vs. The Shaolin Monks", you know. I don't know why that became an idiosyncrasy of mine but I get there about an hour-and-a-half before the show, watch that, get ready, start to put the make-up on, and by the time I am ready to go on, it's got me relaxed and ready.
Canada.com: You're still touring. Do you ever get tired of being on the road?
Alice: I'll tell you what, I would have been tired had I not have quit drinking. I quit drinking 25 years ago. When I was drinking I was getting very tired of the grind. Now it's been 25 years since I have had a drink I do a much higher energy show at the age of 58 then I did when I was 28.
Canada.com: What is one thing that people don't know about Alice Cooper?
Alice: Well, I collect watches. I have about 300 watches and I don't have any idea why. I am very, um, what you would call, um, an addictive personality. I also have 23 TVs in my house. It's just one of those things where, once I get into it… like I play golf six times a week. When I get into something I like, I do it a lot! I think that was part of the reason why I was an alcoholic too, you know — when I found something I liked, I did it to much. So I had to be very careful of what my addictions where.
Canada.com: I'm sure one of those 23 TVs is tuned to "Rock Star: Supernova" or "American Idol".
Alice: I absolutely hate those shows! I hate reality TV with a passion! When it comes to shows like "Survivor"… when they are all on the island, that's when the tsunami should hit. Right then! Take everybody off that island. The only reality show I liked is "The Contender". I like the boxing one because you're going to pick somebody in that fight anyway and then when you get the background on these guys — they've got kids, they've got a mother that's sick, they've got this and that — it turns that boxing match into something different. That's the only one I like. The others seem to be mean-spirited. And there has not been one rock act on "American Idol".

Shining Replace Singer On Possible Suicide Of Last
Swedish black metallers SHINING have posted the following statement regarding frontman Niklas Kvarforth has committed suicide:
"There have been many rumours saying that our front-man, founder Kvarforth is dead, we wish these speculations to be put to an end by telling you what we know: a couple of days ago, we received a letter from a person very close to Kvarforth telling us that Kvaforth had decided to leave this world behind and also introducing as a kind off last will, a new singer to replace him for future events of Shining. All that we know for 200% is that Kvarforth has been missing for the past four weeks and might be dead. We don´t really know for us, the band. This comes as no surprise as he has been suffering from extreme anxiety and depression the past six months and some truly extreme things, considering his own personal life, occurred dramatically right before he disappeared. However, we wish to send our deepest regrets to our friend and sadistical leader Kvarforth wherever he might be! Kvarforth did as mentioned, involve a new singer in the band without telling us before he left. His name is Ghoul and will be introduced on the release-show we are holding in December. No one of us, the band members have meet him yet but a contact have been established via letter-exchange, and as this was Kvarforth’s own will, we are now officially presenting our newest member, whoever this might be, Ghoul. It shall also be said that both me and the guys in the band have heard Kvarforth's wish that Shining should get a new singer if he died or disappeared but we never thought that it would come to this point! But it has so we welcome Ghoul to this misery."
Hatesphere In Wrting Mode
We are at the moment in the process of writing songs for the new cd, and its going really well. Its always a bitch to get the writing process started, but this time has been pretty smooth, and we already have two songs done.
To everyone in good ol' Germany - remember to watch "Newcomer TV" Sonntagnacht 27.08.06 WDR Fernsehen 3:00 Uhr which will feature a special about the Traffic Jam festival we played a few weeks ago. We will be on there, messing around and drinking beer while trying to do an interview haha - should be good fun.
When we played the amazing Hellfest this year, our concert was filmed for the coming Hellfest 2006 DVD. I just saw the footage and its damn good - check it out, and buy the DVD which features a lot of other great bands who played at the festival too.
Horns up!

Brand New Sin Return, Post New Music Online
New York quintet BRAND NEW SIN have returned with a voracious hard rock assault laden with soaring, captivating melodies and crushing anthems that are sure to get anyone’s blood flowing and fists pumping. This highly anticipated new offering, Tequila, will further establish them as one of rock’s premiere tandems, a testament backed perfectly by the track “Motormeth,” which can be streamed at the link below. Tequila is set for an October 3rd release. http://mp3.centurymedia.com/brandnewsin/tequila/brandnewsin_motormeth.mp3
Joe Altier (vocals) further describes what “Motormeth” is all about: “The inspiration behind ‘Motormeth’ was to create a song that hits you in the face and just keeps going. It’s BRAND NEW SIN through and through. The song is based on the people in your life that push you to your absolute brink of anger and then reap what they sow. It fits perfectly on our new album, Tequila, which perfectly captures our raw energy. Hopefully, everyone finds the new tunes as ‘intoxicating’ as we do. We feel that a lot of bands nowadays make things sound too polished, and we have been told for years that our albums are good but our live shows are much better, so that's what we went for. See ya soon.”

Killswitch Engage Set To Release New Album
Killswitch Engage has titled their upcoming album "As Daylight Dies." Produced by Killswitch guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, the effort will hit stores on November 21st via Roadrunner Records. Speaking to MTV.com, bassist Mike D'Antonio had the following to say:
"There was really hardly any thought put into it at all. It just came out and we hadn't written in so long that everyone had a lot to contribute. It felt more like the sessions for Alive Or Just Breathing, where everyone was contributing, and everyone had a say. That is more, to me, what the Killswitch style is. But, it is the typical line that everyone gives you - that this is a heavier album — but it kind of is. It's definitely way heavier. There are still the melodic choruses here and there, and there's a lot to latch onto. But it's heavy."
As previously reported, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, LAMB OF GOD and UNEARTH are joining forces for an Australian tour in October.

Interview
Interview With Eternity Black's Ryan McKnight
Former HELSTAR guitarists, Robert Trevino and Larry Barragan, have formed a new metal beast entitled ETERNITY BLACK out of the very proud and legendary underground metal scene of Houston, Texas. These two clearly made an impact with their former band and are now sitting on top of a literal powder keg with the new one. I even venture out to say that they are at the helm of one of the baddest, meanest-sounding unsigned acts in the world. They will not bow down to the corpororate metal way-of-thinking as they move forward, ushering in the truest form of heavy music one can handle. I am really impressed by not only the guitars and percussion going on, but they have got one incredible vocalist in Ryan McKnight, who I shared some Q&A with recently. Getcha pull! More...

ETID Bassist Comments, The Chariot Replaces Him
As previously reported, Every Time I Die bassist Chris Byrnes has left the band, playing his final show with ETID this past weekend in Michigan at Dirt Fest. The latest rumors suggest that Keller Harbin, formerly of The Chariot, has subsequently taken his place.
Lambgoat contacted Byrnes yesterday and he confirmed his departure and had the following to say:
"The split was amicable, but something that I had to do. For the sake of not stirring up controversy I won't go into the details. All I can really say is that it was not an easy decision to have to make. I truly wish those dudes well and know that the success that they achieved prior to and during my time with them will only continue."
Guns N' Roses Add New US Tour Dates
LiveDaily.com repots: Guns N' Roses have added a pair of new cities to their growing itinerary, doubling the number of stops on their upcoming North American tour plans.
New to the group's schedule is a Sept. 27 appearance at Fresno, CA's Save Mart Center and an Oct. 2 show at Sacramento's ARCO Arena. Tickets for both shows are scheduled to go on sale Saturday (8/26). Previously, the band announced concert plans for San Francisco and Las Vegas.
GN'R's most recent major US tour was in 2002. That troubled outing was cut short with more than a dozen shows remaining on its schedule, after frontman Axl Rose failed to show up for two gigs.
Guns N' Roses recently wrapped up a European tour that was fairly uneventful by Rose's standards. However, Rose was arrested following his band's Stockholm, Sweden, stop for allegedly scuffling with a security guard and busting up a hotel lobby; the singer also fell ill near the end of the European tour's final show at London's Wembley Arena. (Former Skid Row vocalist Sebastian Bach took over to finish out the set.)
Rose is the only remaining original member of GN'R. The group is currently rounded out by keyboardist Dizzy Reed, bassist Tommy Stinson, keyboardist Chris Pitman, drummer Brian "Brain" Mantia, and guitarists Robin Finck, Richard Fortus and Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal.
The band has been working the road in advance of its supposedly soon-to-be-released album, "Chinese Democracy." The disc, which has been in the pipeline for about a decade, and the release of which has been delayed repeatedly over the years, will be the group's first collection of original material since the early '90s. No specific release date has been announced.
