Trial For Metal Girl Stabbed In Face Ongoing
BBC News reports: A teenage pupil stabbed in the eye with scissors has told of a "gang mentality" based on music and fashion tastes. The 15-year-old girl narrowly escaped losing her sight in the attack at a Surrey school last November.
Giving evidence by video at Guildford Crown Court, she told how she had been the victim of a string of attacks.
One girl, 14, is charged with wounding with intent. Two others, aged 15, are charged with perverting the course of justice by hiding the scissors. All three deny charges over the alleged lunch break attack.
Speaking via a video link, the victim said she had been threatened, and had even received prank calls at home, because she was labelled "a metaler" - a reference to her preference for heavy metal music.
She explained that after the attack she had been scared to return to school in case friends of her attacker "try to finish the job". "I mean, it's this gang mentality that my generation seems to insist upon and I want to stop it," she said.
She also told the court how she had had nightmares about being stabbed whilst at school after years of bullying.
The jury heard how name-calling in the school canteen had escalated into the attack on the school playing fields last year. The three defendants - all pupils at the same school - asked around for a pair of scissors which they said they would use to cut the victim's long hair, it heard.
The victim told the court her attacker held the blade in her hand "like in the movie Psycho". She described feeling the blade puncture her eyelid, and of feeling further blows to her head and back.
The teenager denied suggestions by defence barrister Barry Kogan, acting for the 14-year-old defendant, that she had begun the fight by racially abusing his client or making aggressive moves.
The trial continues.

Celtic Frost To Use H.R. Giger Art On Merch
To celebrate their legendary collaboration and enduring friendship, renown Swiss surrealist H.R. Giger and Celtic Frost proudly announce the exclusive introduction of a line of specially created To Mega Therion album merchandise featuring H.R. Giger's acclaimed "Satan I" painting.
In late 1983, H.R. Giger offered Hellhammer’s Tom Gabriel Fischer and Martin Eric Ain the free use of "Satan I" (along with the painting "Victory III") for an album cover. Honored the young Swiss band agreed to Giger’s condition that the band would refrain from making any other commercial use of the paintings, particularly for merchandising. Fischer and Ain later expanded upon the concept of Hellhammer to form Celtic Frost (1984) and the paintings were eventually used for the cover of Celtic Frost's legendary 1985 release To Mega Therion, never breaking the oath they made to H.R. Giger.
In 2006, H.R. Giger granted Celtic Frost the use of "Satan I" as an oversize backdrop for the band's larger shows. To commemorate their long-standing collaboration and the band's strict compliance with H.R. Giger's wishes, H.R. Giger and Celtic Frost have decided to release, for the first time ever, an official line of "Satan I"/To Mega Therion t-shirts, hoodies, and long sleeve t-shirts. This merchandise has been designed in accordance with H.R. Giger's comprehensive instructions and has been personally approved by the artist. This is the only official "Satan I"/To Mega Therion merchandise worldwide, and it is being manufactured to the highest possible standards. Any "Satan I"/To Mega Therion merchandise not purchased either through Celtic Frost's webstore or from the official merchandise booth at Celtic Frost's concerts is bootleg merchandise and neither legal nor licensed by H.R. Giger.

Breed 77 To Release New Single Next Week
BREED 77, who originate from Gibraltar (an overseas territory of the United Kingdom), are set to unleash new single, "Blind", on September 4. "Blind" displays many elements of BREED 77's highly developed sound; driving Latino rhythms, accomplished musicianship and high voltage modern rock. The infectious single is taken from the band's Ron St. Germain-produced (TOOL, SOUNDGARDEN, CREED) CD, "In My Blood (En Mi Sangre)", due for release one week later in conjunction with the "In My Blood" album tour. The album's U.K. release (via Albert Productions U.K., the hard-hitting rock label and world-wide publisher of AC/DC) will be followed by releases in Australia (by SonyBMG), Europe and South Africa.
The release of "In My Blood (En Mi Sangre)" follows 2004's breakthrough album "Cultura", which spawned three Top 40 singles and sold in excess of 30,000 copies. This new record shows a progression on BREED 77's trademark Latino sound that has been carefully nurtured over the last few years.

Manifest Guitarist Breaks Elbow
Guitarist Ole Marius Larmerud of the Norwegian noise-thrashers MANIFEST fell off his bike yesterday and broke his elbow. "This puts us out of business for some time," reads a posting on the group's web site.
Commented Ole: "Yesterday I fell of my bike and broke my left elbow. This forces MANIFEST to cancel the upcoming gigs in Horten, Kristiansand, Trondheim and Oslo. I am not sure if we will be able to do the Norwegian tour in support of ENTOMBED [in late September]. I am going to an examination at the hospital in a week, so hopefully I`ll know more then. The timing of this stupid accident could of course not have been worse, as we have a lot of gigs in the near future. This sucks big-time, but there is nothing we can do about it. Right now, my arm hurts as hell, but at least, the doctor believes that it will heal fast and not have any permanent damage. For now, I'll just eat painkillers and focus on getting well." More...

Versoma Replaces Two Members
New York/Philadelphia quartet Versoma just completed their first tour with Robotic Empire labelmates Red Sparowes and Daughters. The ten-day jaunt took the band up and down the east coast (and Canada) with a solidified new lineup. The departure of Greg Drudy and Brad Wallace was met with a full change in the rhythm section, now featuring Robin Fowler (of Sino Basila) on drums and Tom Clavin (of Anodyne, Disnihil) on bass.
Unable to let a lineup change slow things down, Versoma performed the bulk of the material from their debut EP "Life During Wartime" along with two completely new songs. These new tracks will be found on their to-be-titled debut album sometime in the earlier part of 2007, for which they have rough skeletons of five more songs.
Not resting there, the band will jump in the van again throughout September and October for a variety of shows, including:
9/09 New York, NY @ Sin'e w/ Made Out Of Babies, Kayo Dot, Gospel, Rosetta
9/27 Baltimore, MD @ The Ottobar w/ Isis
10/1 Philadelphia, PA @ First Unitarian Church w/ Isis
10/4 Providence, RI @ The Living Room w/ Isis

Ivan Drago Is Dead
Hardcore band Ivan Drago decided to quit after vocalist Thomas left the group one month ago, here's a statement from the band:
"If he's dead, he's dead - so is Ivan Drago"
"Since the average 'hardcore'-band does usually not exist for longer than three years, we decided to show how 'hardcore' we are and therefore split up."
"Actually it has to do with the fact that because of different obligations we currently cannot concentrate on the band as much as it deserves and therefore found that it's better to quit and be free for something new."
"We are going to work with new projects that more or less will continue the musical tradition of Ivan Drago so this is not that much a loss but a break, a reform and the search for new challenges."
"We would like to thank everyone who supported and understood our goal not to concentrate on poplularity but on music. It has been a good feeling to reach exactly those who we'd addressed."
"'Go on, get out. Last words are for fools who haven't said enough.' - Karl Marx"
The one and only record Ivan Drago released was their split CD with Elision.
Navarro Blasts Claims Supernova Picked A Singer
'Rock Star: Supernova' co-host Dave Navarro is blasting a gossip report from Janet Charlton claiming that Tommy Lee, Gilby Clarke, and Jason Newsted have already selected Lukas Rossi to front the band. "Damn there are some funny rumors around regarding the show," Navarro writes. "First of all, I don't know who Janet Charlton is, but I do know who she isn't. She aint no Perez Hilton, that's for sure. At least with Perez, you get humor and the rumors are at least based in SOME fact. He leaves it up to the reader to do the dance between the two. As for Janet, she just kind of sees what sticks. Well, with Rockstar, she doesn't have a clue as to what she is talking about. If she has an inside source... Name it! Come on! I dare you! Name it! If you don't know what I am talking about... She has claimed that she knows who the winner is. Trust me... Nobody knows until it's over."
In other news, "Rock Star: Supernova" suffered a controversial elimination after Ryan Star was sent packing. Fans were outraged at the move and the problems that plagued the show's online voting system at Rockstar.MSN.com. Before the results show even aired, show co-host Dave Navarro posted, "I have nothing to do with MSN!!! Don't know what to tell ya! I'll know more when I get to work tomorrow about the voting fiasco." In a follow-up post, The Panic Channel guitarist addressed the controversy for a second time, writing, "As for the voting issue. This is MY site. It is not an offshoot of MSN. You got a problem with voting? Take it there. Write to them. I host this, pay for it and update it myself. As I said before...I don't know what the problem is."

Angra Discuss New Album
Brazilian melodic metallers ANGRA have posted the following message on their official web site:
"ANGRA is putting the very final touches unto its new album. The CD is going to be released in October and shall be the main event in the band's 15th anniversary celebrations.
"The name of the record has been finally announced. It's called 'Aurora Consurgens', which is also the title of an old book written by Saint Thomas of Aquin. Such book was used by Jung to establish relations between dreams and different mental conditions. Contrary to the band's latest album, 'Temple Of Shadows', the forthcoming effort is not a concept album. However, all lyrics do have a common theme: the various mental issues, including suicidal tendencies, schizophrenia, manic depression, sociopathy, etc. The artwork was once again designed by Portuguese artist Isabel de Amorim. Metallica Discuss Importance of Master Of Puppets
METALLICA's James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich recently spoke to Masa Ito's "Rock City" TV show in Japan about their decision to play the "Master of Puppets" album in its entirety to celebrate its 20th anniversary. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow:
Hetfield: "My gut feeling is… I think 'Master of Puppets' represents a certain time in history. It was kind of the end of the Cliff Burton era in METALLICA, which is sad, but also very important. And maybe 'Master of Puppets' was the record that a lot of the early fans identified with. 'Cause after that Jason [Newsted] joined the band and then the popularity became bigger. And then the 'black' album… It was different after 'Master of Puppets'. So I think there's still an innocence about it and just a real 'fuck you, world' attitude to it still. And we weren't, I think, very influenced by all of the 'bigness' of METALLICA. Plus the songs — they have that energy, that fire; they're still youthful, but we were still growing, and the songs got grander and bigger, and [we added] more character to the songs. I think every song on that record is really good and it stands up to time." More...
Internal Suffering Announce Colombian Tour
Brutal death metallers INTERNAL SUFFERING will be returning home to Colombia in Decemeber for their "El Retorno Del Caos '06" tour with SOULEDGE. You can check out the dates over at the band's official MySpace page.
Machine Head Drummer Is "On Fire" In The Studio
Dave McClain, drummer of Machine Head is on reportedly to be 'on fire' at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland CA, tracking no less than 6 out of the 8 songs in one day for the new album, including two tracks of 10 minutes each.
Dave was ready to strangle the producer after days and days of trying out a multitude of drum kits, heads, skins and different combinations. The band really felt strongly about having real drum tones on this record, preferring them over the overly triggered drum sound that is so prevalent in metal today. Preferring to mix in some of that triggered sound into the real tones, Rob Flynn comments that, "Sure, you gotta have a little bit in there - a bit in the kick, blend some in with the snare, but man, real drums sound fucking awesome when you get 'em dialed in." It is argued that there is no comparison for a real drum tone, with triggers often leaving listeners bored from listening fatigue (listening to the same sound over and over). It seems that the preparation time and this method is serving the new record well, Rob is especially pleased, "we got the sickest drum tones EVER…he's killing it SO hard. Drum magazine editors take note... your new king is here, and his name is Dave McClain!"
Machine Head's new record 'The Blackening' is set for release in early 2007.
Horse The Band Parts With Drummer
Horse The Band has parted ways with drummer Eli Green. According to an email received by Lambgoat.com, Green says that the split was "due to irreconcilable differences between personalities of certain members... shit happens but life goes on. I will sincerely miss the handful of cool people I've met around the world."
Green is now looking to start a new project in Southern California. Interested parties should contact him at elingreen@hotmail.com.

Manson To Record "Nightmare" Soundtrack
MTV.com reports:
When Tim Burton's kinda-spooky, kinda-silly "The Nightmare Before Christmas" first lurked into theaters in October 1993, it was greeted with lavish critical praise and ... well, that's about it.
Though it would eventually go on to gross a respectable $50 million at the box office, the film struggled to connect with mainstream audiences and was regarded by execs at Disney as a bit of a flop — a grand, goth-lite experiment in stop-motion animation that failed to live up to commercial expectations.
But when the film was released the following year on VHS, something amazing happened: "Nightmare" became massive, spawning merchandise and a devoted cult following that included tons of goth kids, their younger siblings, basically every emo-punk band on the planet and a whole lot of decidedly un-emo acts too.
So when Disney announced earlier this year that it planned to bring "Nightmare" back to the big screen — it arrives in select theaters October 20 in a fancy, digital 3-D format — the logical decision was to reach out to some of those bands to supply music for the film.
As it turns out, a whole lot of them were more than happy to comply. Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, Marilyn Manson, Fiona Apple and She Wants Revenge will all appear on a special two-disc edition of the "Nightmare" soundtrack, contributing cover versions of songs featured in the film. The double-disc set will hit stores October 24.
"Disney approached our management about us doing a song," Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz told MTV News. "And we're obsessed with that film and Danny Elfman [who wrote the score]. And of course I've got my 'Nightmare' tattoos, so we were like, 'Yes!'
"The songs in the film are pretty much the best things ever," he continued. "They're Elfman at his prime. And our song 'Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner' [from 2005's From Under the Cork Tree] blatantly rips off a crescendo from one of them. They're absolutely amazing."
Fall Out Boy contribute a raucous version of "What's This?" (a song belted out in the film by protagonist Jack Skellington). Fellow Decaydancers Panic! at the Disco offer up an orchestrated version of "This Is Halloween" (sung by the citizens of Halloweentown in the film), as does Marilyn Manson. Fiona Apple covers the somber "Sally's Song," while She Wants Revenge do "Kidnap the Sandy Claws."
Also included on the second disc of the set are two demo versions of songs Elfman originally wrote for the film, "Making Christmas" and "Oogie Boogie's Song." Disc one presents Elfman's score — including 10 original songs — in its entirety.
For Panic frontman Brendon Urie, just the chance to be included alongside Elfman was reason enough to get on board. Well that and a little good-natured band rivalry of course.
"Everyone in Panic loves Danny Elfman, so it's a bonus to be included alongside him," Urie said. "And I spoke to [drummer Andy Hurley] from Fall Out Boy about it, and he said they were on it, so we wanted to get on there too. So many bands that we're friends with and bands we tour with are a part of it and such huge fans of the movie. We all watched it as kids and we all watch it now, so it's really cool to be a part of it."
Zakk Wylde On New Album, Tour And Ozzy
X-Press Magazine have posted an interview with guitar virtuoso Zakk Wylde online. Zakk has recently finished headlining Ozzfest with both Black Label Society, on second stage, and Ozzy Osbourne's band of the same name on first, and is now laying down tracks for Ozzy's next studio album, whilst releasing BLS's new album, "Shot To Hell", and DVD, "European Invasion: Doomtroopin'". Excerpts from the interview follow:
DH: On the new album, Shot To Hell, did you record everything yourself again in the studio?
ZW: As always, you know how it goes, you get in the studio and you just start writing. We never do pre-production or anything like that. As soon as we get in there it's game on.
DH: A go-with-the-flow kind of thing?
ZW: Totally. I've done it the other way with Ozzy, you know, rehearsed with the producer we have and it's like produce, go over it again, go over it again, let's see what the kick drum's doing. It's like, 'does it really matter? Just let us play dude we know the goddamn songs, just let us get in there 'cause we're like sucking all the fire out of these songs'. Rehearsals to me are like getting ready for the tour.
DH: You obviously don't use the band that you tour with on the records?
ZW: Yeah, totally. I just get in the studio and knock it out. I didn't have any ideas before we got in there, eight days later I had 23 songs. Got all the riffs, start doing the guitars, because I record like everything on the bass, going through a Marshall, so this way you're going to have to come up with riffs. You've got four strings - I mean that's it, it's going to start riffing out on the damn thing.
DH: You're doing double duty playing with Ozzy and headlining Stage 2 with Black Label Society at this year's Ozzfest. Is it tough going out there every night and keeping the energy level up?
ZW: I'd be on stage at like 3pm. I get up every day about 10.30-11am, something like that, go into the hotel just grab something to eat, lift weights.
DH: You train hardcore, Dorian Yates style?
ZW: Without a doubt that's my guy, man. We just lift then come 12 o'clock crack my first beer and then it's just like sit on the bus 'til about 3pm, just noodle on the guitar, watch TV for a bit, just chill out. Then 3 o'clock comes rolling around we're on stage with Black Label right after we get done with that I come walking out on the bus put my Black Label colours on the bus put my Ozzy colours on go right back on stage at 4 o'clock and then we gotta knock out another hour. It was like hysterical, there's like a heat wave going on over here. I'm figuring it's just going to be hot in Arizona or something in the south or whatever, everywhere we played it had to be like 110 degrees outside everyday. You could drink like two kegs of beer everyday, eating burgers, pizza, hot dogs and you're still going to drop 30 pounds.
DH: Is Ozzy more fun to hang around sober or when he's tanked?
ZW: It's not one of those things where he can just drink a beer, you know, have a couple of beers with the guys and then call it a day. With him it's a beer then he starts doing the weed and then right after that it's the cocaine, then he's gone for three days and we can't find him.
DH: Your lineage is with the all-time guitar greats such as Rhandy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee and Tony Iommi, all the players connected with Ozzy. When you go in the studio with Ozzy do you enjoy playing songs co-written by guys like David Grohl of the Foo Fighters and Nirvana?
ZW: When all that stuff went down I was just like… no! I mean, first off it was cheesy, horrendous stuff. You know, 'why are we using this? Just because we're paying this guy, this is like they wouldn't even put this stuff on their records… what are we doing'? You know what I mean? I go, 'I could piss shit out of my dick better than this stuff in a New York second'.
DH: To get as musically proficient as someone like Eddie Van Halen, Rhandy Rhoads, Uli Roth, Dimebag or even yourself takes the hard yards of commitment. In doing double duty gigs do you still put in the practice hours to keep the chops up? What's your practice regimen like?
ZW: I still got to practice every day, but I enjoy doing that. I love it. You can always keep getting better. It's like being the heavyweight champion of the world, like Dorian Yates the reason why he won six Mr Olympias was every year he came in bigger and more shredded. You can't just go just because you're there now you just show up and get the trophy. If you are the heavyweight champion of the world, dude, if you don't keep doing what got you there, you're going to get your ass handed to you.
DH: So what were your feelings in the '90s during the whole grunge/nu metal scene when playing solos was being somewhat uncool for the cool school?
ZW: I just figured everything's full circle. Everything just got to the point when it couldn't go any higher with the shredding thing, then Nirvana came in with great songs, then Soundgarden, Alice In Chains. You know, those guys were still doing some solos, not to the extent, but I mean Jerry Cantrell was still putting solos in Man In The Box. He still always had solos.
DH: What was it like being in the Rock Star movie?
ZW: I had a great time doing that. It was just funny. 'Let me get this straight, what is it you want me to do?' They said, 'basically you just be yourself really, just hang around play guitar all day, lift weights, drink beer'. I go 'and you're going to pay me for this? Alright, I'm in'. I had a good time doing it man, it was a lot of fun.
DH: Anything else you would like to say before I leave you alone?
ZW: To the rest of the Australian chapters down there, just to tell them to stay strong, keep bleeding Black Label and we'll see them in a little bit.
